Keep Copilot Chat bound across log rotation and metadata-only changes - #3086
Two cases where Copilot Chat showed "Conversation unavailable" for a running, logged session:
Fresh reader after rotation. Copilot rotates process-<startMs>-<pid>.log by copy-and-truncate into .1.log….4.log. An Ovis started (or restarted) after a rotation only saw the open file, so the registration that lived in the copies was lost.
Metadata-only changes. A timestamp-only change (identical bytes, same size) dropped an established logged binding as copilot_log_metadata_changed.
How
archivedLifecycle (fresh reader only, no cache and no prior denial): replays .1..N.log oldest-first, only when the oldest copy's first line is stamped 0–5 s after the start time in the log name, which shows no copy was pruned. It keeps the existing safeguards: a 64 MiB total cap, O_NOFOLLOW, regular files only, and dev/ino stability. A copy moved during the read retries on the next lookup. A copy ending inside a line is not replayed, and the reader falls back to the open log alone, as before.
metadata_changed now applies only to legacy/unavailable selections. A logged binding with identical bytes stays bound under the same generation.
A log that shrinks below the size last seen now counts as copilot_log_truncated. This closes a pre-existing gap where a shrink within the same timestamp tick counted as unchanged.
Docs (docs/copilot-chat.md) and a changelog fragment.
bun test server/copilot.test.ts: 98 pass. The new tests (proven/pruned/unterminated chains; timestamp-only change, partial tail, truncation, same-length rewrite) fail without the fix, except the pruned negative case.
bun run check run bun test --timeout 15000 ./server/copilot.contract.test.ts: 8 pass.
bun run check fast: workflow syntax, generated types/themes, typecheck and build ok. The unit-test step fails only in scripts/build-cache, scripts/self-hosted-runner, scripts/ci-runner-route, scripts/relay-ios-sim and scripts/cla-workflow, which fail identically on clean main in this environment.

Bug Fixes
Copilot Chat can remain available when log timestamps change without new content.
When an Ovis starts after log rotation, it can recover lifecycle information from earlier log copies when they meet the recovery criteria.
Improved handling of partial log lines, shortened logs, and same-size rewrites helps preserve accurate session state.
The Copilot log reader can reconstruct lifecycle state from qualifying rotated archives. It also revalidates cached log data across timestamp changes, partial appends, truncation, and same-size rewrites.

Summary
Replay lifecycle from rotated archives server/copilot-store.ts, server/copilot.test.ts, docs/copilot-chat.md, changelog.d/copilot-log-reader-resilience.md
On an initial read, the reader replays complete lifecycle records from a qualifying, unchanged archive chain within the specified size limit. Tests cover recovered bindings, insufficient or pruned archives, and subsequent open-log events.
The reader rehashes the consumed prefix and limits same-size metadata-change reports to cached legacy or unavailable selections. Tests cover timestamp-only changes, partial records, truncation, and same-size rewrites.
devswha/ovis#2025: Adds the LOG_READ_CHANGED retry path used when archive reads change during replay.
devswha/ovis#2724: Replays rotated logs from a verified checkpoint; this change also supports recovery for a fresh reader without a checkpoint.
devswha/ovis#2283: Adds prefix revalidation after descriptor-read errors; this change adjusts revalidation for timestamp-only changes.
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review f1872
Chat can retain a released session or temporarily reject a valid session after rotation. Archive trust and error handling also need correction. Resolve these issues before merging; the frequency of early-pruning failures remains uncertain.

A reader that first meets a Copilot process after its log rotated now
replays the archived copies when the oldest provably starts with the
process. A timestamp-only change no longer drops a logged binding, and a
log that shrinks below the size last seen counts as truncated.

Require complete history before accepting archive release proof.
If a pruned archive starts within five seconds of process start, replay can treat its unregister as a valid release even when the removed history registered a different session. This can authorize a handoff that the complete history would reject. Do not use the timestamp window alone as proof of completeness.

Preserve the archive boundary for empty logs.
When archive replay selects a session while the open log is empty, the checkpoint has a zero-byte prefix. If an unregister is written and rotated before the next lookup, that prefix still matches, and Chat can keep showing the released session. Track the archive boundary so later rotations are replayed.

Thanks a lot for this fix, @YuuuXie. Both cases reproduce on main: the proven chain test and the metadata-only test fail there and pass here.
Our review (omo, Codex, CodeRabbit) found gaps around the new copy replay, so I pushed five commits on top of yours (c82034e, b7412e0, 4ba6f71, 21207cc, 9f580a8) and merged main in. Your commit is unchanged.
Rotation the reader missed (HIGH, reproduced by omo and Codex). A binding the reader had kept could survive a later rotation. That happened when the binding came from the copies while the open log was still empty (an empty prefix continues every file), or when the open log came back in byte-identical form after the rotation (the metadata-only rule then saw nothing new). Chat would show the previous session. Each checkpoint now records the newest copy's inode. A new .1.log since the last read counts as a rotation even when the bytes match. A binding made from the copies alone reads the whole chain again; any other binding carries on through rotatedLifecycle from the copy that continues the bytes already read. New test: follows a rotation after a binding read from the copies (the open log empty, written, or in the same bytes).
Copies from another user (CodeRabbit). A copy is replayed only when it has the open log's owner, both on a fresh read and when following a rotation. New foreign row and the test never carries a binding on through another user's copy after a rotation.
Unreadable or linked copy (CodeRabbit, Codex). A copy that gives ELOOP, EACCES or EPERM no longer leaves a lasting copilot_log_unreadable; the open log stands alone. The newest-copy check uses lstat, so a link there cannot throw either. New linked row.
Descriptor leak (CodeRabbit, Codex). A copy's descriptor is registered before fstatSync.
Copy changed while it was read (Codex). Each copy's size, mtime and ctime are compared before and after the read.
Rotation while the open log was read (Codex). The newest copy is looked at before and after the read. If it changed, the read is retried, as for any other raced read, so the bytes are never recorded against a newer copy. New test: reads the log again when it rotates while it is read.
New copy looked at before it is whole (omo). When a binding made from the copies alone is read again after a rotation, and the chain cannot be read yet (the new .1.log still ends inside a line), the earlier read is kept and no lasting denial is recorded. The next lookup reads the chain again, and a registration in the open log still binds at once. New test: reads the copies again once a copy still being written is whole.
Log emptied during a raced first read (omo, MEDIUM). When a read that raced kept bytes that no longer start the open log, and no rotation copied them, the copies no longer stand in for them; the reader stays unavailable as on main. New test: never lets the copies stand in for a log emptied while it was read.
64 MiB limit (omo). The open log's size now counts with the copies, as the docs say.
Not changed, noted here:
A binding made from the copies alone, with ordinary lines in the open log, drops to unavailable when a lookup lands on a half-written .1.log at the next rotation, and stays unavailable until the next registration (omo, MEDIUM, reproduced). main shows unavailable for that pane from the start, so it is no regression; follow-up Copilot Chat stays unavailable when a lookup lands on a half-written log copy after a copy-only binding #3104.
After a rotation, a binding made from the copies alone gets a new generation even when the session is unchanged (omo, LOW). An open page cursor may then reload once.
A log cut back by something other than Copilot to exactly the size already read, after a new registration, keeps the earlier session (omo, LOW). main shows the same session there; only the generation differs.
When copies exist but cannot prove the chain (pruned, linked, another user's, or over 64 MiB together with the open log), a fresh reader falls back to the open log alone, held marker included. That is what main does for every rotated log today; making it unavailable instead would also drop the marker fallback for every long-running Copilot whose oldest copies were pruned (Codex).
A copy written by the same user who runs Copilot is trusted, as the open log already is: that user can append to the open log too.
A pruned chain whose oldest kept copy still starts within 5 s of launch would need Copilot to log more than one full rotation (about 10 MiB) in its first five seconds.
CodeRabbit reviewed up to b60cd86 and skipped the later pushes; omo and Codex reviewed every head after it, and the last omo review at ea8347d is clear.
Validation: bun test server/copilot.test.ts (108 pass; each new case fails on the head before its fix) and bun run check fast on ea8347d (merged with main 3904098).
One more round on top of the earlier one, after a pre-merge Codex pass (ce1fbf1, a7d2b95, 7f5dd45). First I checked how Copilot 1.0.105 really rotates, by driving its own native logger (runnerCreateFileLogger in runtime.node) in a scratch folder:
It moves the copies up by rename (.1.log to .2.log and so on, keeping four and deleting the oldest).
It writes the new copy to .1.log.rotation-staging, renames it to .1.log, then empties the open log in place.
So it never writes .1.log in place, and a half-written .1.log never appears under that name. Three other things do happen:
The inode number of a deleted copy came back as a new .1.log.
While it copies, Copilot holds the open log open twice.
For a moment there is no .1.log at all.
Changes:
The newest copy is compared by inode, size, mtime and ctime, not by inode alone, so a reused inode or a copy written over in place still counts as a rotation. New test rows: follows a rotation over the old copies ….
A second descriptor on the same log path is the same log. Before this (on main too), a lookup while Copilot copied its log turned into a lasting copilot_log_ambiguous. Another log of the same process is still ambiguous. New test: reads a log Copilot opens a second time to copy it as the one log.
A newest copy that ends inside a line is read again on the next lookup by a fresh reader, instead of leaving the open log alone for good. Older copies ending inside a line still prove no chain. New test: reads the copies again once the newest, still being written at the first lookup, is whole.
The moment with no .1.log still counts as a rotation. I first treated it as "not yet a rotation", but Codex reproduced a wrong session with that: two rotations between lookups returned A, A, A instead of A, unavailable, B. a7d2b95 reverts that one clause, and never shows a session left in the copies when a lookup lands inside rotation 1/2 pins it. A lookup that lands in the gap is therefore fail-closed: Chat falls back to the terminal until Copilot registers again. With Copilot's real logger rotating six times under continuous lookups, 3 of 10 runs ended that way and none showed a wrong session. Making that gap recover by itself is follow-up Copilot Chat stays unavailable after a lookup lands in the gap of a log rotation #3109.
Each new test fails on the head before its fix.
Validation: bun test server/copilot.test.ts (115 pass) and bun run check fast on 7f5dd45 (merged with main dd4d127).
Thanks again @YuuuXie, and sorry this one is taking long. We are pausing it here rather than merging, because the review keeps finding new ways the reader can end on the wrong Copilot session, and a wrong session is worse than the current "unavailable".
What we measured (Copilot 1.0.105's own logger): copies shift up by rename and keep four, a staging copy is renamed to .1.log, then the open log is truncated in place; deleted inode numbers are reused, and the open log is held twice while copying.
The maintainer's pre-merge adversarial review at 7f5dd45 reproduced, with the reader from each revision against a harness that follows that order:
HIGH: after two rotations, a changed newest copy triggers recovery even when the open log is back to the same bytes, and recovery takes the first matching prefix newest-first, so a stale session can be kept (copilot-store.ts:319, :116).
MEDIUM: a lookup inside the rotation gap stores copilot_log_rewritten and keeps Chat unavailable until Copilot registers again, where main keeps the session (:295, :414).
Main today goes lastingly "ambiguous" in about half of real rotations (the open log held twice), which is safe but annoying; that part of your PR plus the stamp change are the pieces we would like to land first in a smaller step. We keep this PR open as a draft so your work and credit stay here.
… ambiguity (#3110)
## Summary
Copilot CLI 1.0 opens its own process log a second time while it copies
it to rotate (about every 10 MiB). A Copilot Chat lookup that landed in
that moment saw two descriptors on `process-<start>-<pid>.log` and
stored `copilot_log_ambiguous`, which kept Chat unavailable (Terminal
fallback) until Copilot registered a session again. Now a second
descriptor counts as that one log when it resolves to the same path and
reaches the same file (device and inode) the reader opened; a path
renamed and reused in between, or two different logs of the same
process, are still ambiguous.
This is the one part of #3086 that cannot pick a session: the reader
still reads exactly one file, the same one it read before. Nothing in
the rotation-recovery path changes. Credit to @YuuuXie, whose #3086
started this work; the rest of #3086 stays there.
## How Copilot 1.0.105 rotates
Measured by driving its own native logger (`runnerCreateFileLogger` in
`runtime.node`) in a scratch folder:
- It renames the copies up (`.1.log` to `.2.log` and so on, keeping
four).
- It writes the new copy to `.1.log.rotation-staging` and renames it to
`.1.log`, then empties the open log in place.
- While it copies, `/proc/<pid>/fd` shows the open log twice.
## Validation
- New test `reads a log Copilot opens a second time to copy it as the
one log` fails on main (`copilot_log_ambiguous`) and passes here. It
also checks that a later registration still binds, that a different file
reported under the same path is still ambiguous (this part fails on the
first commit, 68eb323, which compared paths only; Codex reproduced that
path-reuse race), and that a second log is still ambiguous.
- `bun test server/copilot.test.ts`: 96 pass.
- `bun run check fast`: green.
- Real-logger harness (run on 68eb323; 8 more runs on the final head
gave the same: no wrong session, bound to A after the rotations, B after
its registration) (scratch, not committed): Copilot's own logger writes
and rotates 4 times while the reader looks up the session continuously,
then registers B. Over 20 interleaved runs each for main and this
branch:
- Wrong session (A shown after B's line was on disk): 0 on main, 0 here.
- Unavailable after the rotations (`copilot_log_ambiguous` until the
next registration): 2/20 on main, 0/20 here.
