feat(sidebar): title an agent row by its renamed herdr tab - #2957
Settings → Appearance gains Agent row title, with two values:
Value
Row title
Second line
Agent (default)
As today: the pane's name, else the agent's title
As today
Tab name
The renamed herdr tab's label
The row's own title (the pane's name, else the agent's title), then today's place, without the tab again
The header of an agent's pane takes the same title as its row. A shell's pane keeps its header.
A pane name still has priority over the agent's title. Under Tab name it takes the agent's title's place on the second line.
A tab herdr still names by its place ("1", or the tab that moved up after a close) keeps today's title. Only renamed tabs change. The check is the one the row already uses for the tab in its place (customTabLabel, by the tab's place in its workspace, not its number).
The second line does not repeat the row's own title when it is the same as the tab's name. The agent's kind is not said again after it, and neither is an agent's name that is the same as the tab's or the row's own title. Each row's ⋯ button names both titles ("More for api review · Idempotent payments"), so two agents in one renamed tab are told apart by a screen reader.
A helper (an agent another agent started) keeps its own title, in its row and its pane's header alike. Its agent's row already names their tab, and a helper drawn under it has no second line, so giving it the tab's name would make the two rows read the same. One function (paneTabRowTitle) decides the title for the row, the header, the split view's bar and the Filter suggestions, so they agree.
The row's tooltip, its ⋯ menu (and the phone's sheet), Group agents by state → Name order and the Filter field's suggestions follow the shown title. The split view's fallback bar of a half takes the header's title.
Not changed: the frames of a tab's panes (PaneCanvas) keep their own titles under the tab strip that already names the tab. Giving every frame of a tab the tab's name would make them identical. Alerts (the in-app droplet, notifications) keep the agent's title.
The setting is shared with the other browsers of the server, like Sidebar rows and Agents order: a tab's name is herdr's, the same in every browser.
Default UI is unchanged.
Design reference: herdr's own TUI. Its default agent row is rows = [["state_icon", "machine", "workspace", "tab"], ["agent"]] ([ui.sidebar.agents]), so a renamed tab is what tells two rows of one agent apart there. Ovis keeps its own default and offers herdr's way as a choice, as the issue proposes.

Validation
bun run check fast on the pushed head (3f2a648, merged with main 5ecdf92): pass (typecheck, build, unit 12110 pass, 0 fail).
Failing first: the new tests in src/lib/sidebarAgents.test.ts (tabRowTitle, paneTabRowTitle, agentContext with a lead), src/components/AgentSidebar.test.ts (rows under Agent and Tab name: pane name, title equal to the tab, numbered tab, tooltip, menu label, helper row, agent name equal to the tab), src/lib/sidebarFilter.test.ts (suggestions under Tab name) and src/lib/settings.test.ts (default, sanitizing, shared scope) fail without the change and pass with it.
Focused: bun test src/lib/settings.test.ts src/lib/sidebarAgents.test.ts src/components/AgentSidebar.test.ts src/components/AgentSidebar.test.tsx src/lib/sidebarFilter.test.ts src/components/MachineSidebar.test.ts src/lib/i18n.test.ts src/conventions.test.ts scripts/changelog-fold.test.ts server/preferences.test.ts src/lib/agentRoster.test.ts (277 pass), bun run typecheck.
Browser: a throwaway Playwright script on the demo build (not committed) asserted every row's title and second line and the header in both values, at 1280 and 390, dark and light, with no page errors. The screenshots above come from it.
Review: one adversarial Codex pass before opening this PR. It found 2 MEDIUM and 2 LOW issues. Fixed here: a helper row took its tab's name, an agent name equal to the tab was repeated, the Filter field did not suggest the tab title, and the split view's fallback bar kept the old title. Not taken: titling each pane frame of a tab by the tab (see above).
Review: omo (Opus 5.5) at 46d07cc found 1 MEDIUM and 3 LOW issues. Fixed in 112d311: a helper's pane header took the tab's name while its row kept its own title (MEDIUM); an agent name equal to the row's own title was repeated; two agents in one renamed tab had the same ⋯ label. The three new tests fail without that commit. The last LOW (no test drives App.tsx's header) is covered by paneTabRowTitle's own tests, which the header calls directly.
Skipped: bun run check full, Mac/iOS and Windows checks (no platform-specific code).
Agent and Tab name moved from the workspace and terminal i18n parts to the base dictionaries, since Settings now uses them too (src/lib/i18n.test.ts placement rule). Their translations are unchanged.
Settings > Appearance gains Agent row title. Agent, the default, keeps
every row as it was. Tab name titles an agent's row, and its pane's
header, with the name someone gave its tab in herdr, as herdr's own agent
rows lead with the tab. The row's own title (the pane's name, else the
agent's title) then leads the second line, which no longer repeats the
tab; a title the same as the tab is not said twice. A tab herdr still
names by its place keeps today's title. The choice is shared with the
other browsers of the server.

Under Agent row title: Tab name, a helper drawn under the agent that
started it keeps its own title: its agent's row already names their tab,
and a helper has no second line to move the title to, so two rows of one
tab no longer read the same. An agent's name the same as the tab is not
said again under it, the split view's fallback bar of a half takes the
tab's name as the header does, and the Filter field suggests the tab's
name that titles a row.

New Features
Added an Appearance option to show agent rows and pane headers using either the agent title or the tab name. The default keeps the existing agent-title display.
In tab-name mode, agent titles appear alongside the tab name when applicable, while helper rows and panes retain their own titles.
Tab names are included in filter suggestions, and the preference syncs across browsers.
Documentation
Added guidance for the new setting and its behavior.
Adds a shared Appearance setting for agent row titles. When configured, renamed tab labels can title agent rows and pane headers. The change also updates row context, sorting, filter suggestions, translations, and tests.

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 46d07
The feature is mergeable with bounded follow-up: some helper names can appear out of order, row context can repeat a name, and an older browser tab can reset the locally saved title preference. These issues do not block core workflows.

Explanation
Issue #2014 requirements are implemented. The PR adds the shared agentRowTitle setting with agent as the default and sanitization for agent or tab. tabRowTitle uses only custom labels at the tab's workspace position. paneTabRowTitle applies the title to agent panes and excludes shells. AgentSidebar applies the title to rows, context, grouping order, tooltips, menus, helpers, and accessibility text. App.tsx applies the same rule to agent pane headers. Filter suggestions, translations, documentation, and automated tests cover the setting and display rules.

Sort helper rows by their displayed titles in Name order when tab titles are used.
With Group agents by state enabled, Name order, and the Tab name row title, groupAgentRows sorts each row by its tab label, helpers included. Helpers display their own titles. Helpers under the same named tab tie on the sort key and keep their input order, so their visible names can be out of alphabetical order.
The sort key must use the title each helper row displays. Helper status depends on the nesting done inside groupAgentRows, so the fix belongs in the grouping step rather than in the name callback at line 239.

Keep the Tab name row title through old-tab saves.
agentRowTitle is stored in the main settings record (src/lib/settings.ts:884). An older tab's whole-record save replaces that record, so the value resets to the default agent. Sibling settings avoid this by using their own storage keys. Add this regression test. It fails until the storage is fixed.

Under Agent row title: Tab name, a helper's row kept its own title but
its pane's header took the tab's name. Whether a pane is a helper (an
agent another agent started) now comes from paneTabRowTitle alone, which
the row, the header, the split view's bar and the Filter suggestions all
read, so they agree wherever the helper is drawn. An agent name the same
as the row's own title is not repeated after it, and each row's menu
button names both titles, so two agents in one renamed tab are told
apart by a screen reader.

CodeRabbit was rate-limited on this PR ("Review limit reached"), so no CodeRabbit review ran. These reviews stand in.
omo (Opus 5.5) at 46d07cc: CHANGES. Resolved in 112d311 (the three new tests fail without it):
MEDIUM: a helper's pane header took the tab's name while its row kept its own title. Whether a pane is a helper (an agent another agent started) now comes from paneTabRowTitle alone, which the row, the header, the split view's bar and the Filter suggestions all read.
LOW: an agent name equal to the row's own title was repeated after it. Now left out.
LOW: two agents in one renamed tab had the same ⋯ label. It now names both titles ("More for api review · Idempotent payments").
LOW: no test drives App.tsx's header. Not added as a unit test: the header calls paneTabRowTitle directly, which has its own tests, and the browser QA script asserts the header text under both values at 390 and 1280.
omo (Opus 5.5) re-review at 112d311: CLEAR. Four LOW notes, not changed (no further round):
The ⋯ label test renders one agent, not two as its comment says. The label's format is asserted; two differing labels are not.
Same as the last LOW above (header covered by paneTabRowTitle's tests and the browser QA).
A helper keeps its own title wherever its row is drawn, also when it is not drawn under its agent (another state group, pinned apart). This is deliberate: the header cannot know where the row is drawn, so the rule follows the data and the row and header always agree. DESIGN.md says so.
A tab renamed exactly like its workspace reads "checkout-api" on the first line and "… · checkout-api" on the second. A follow-up could drop the workspace from the second line in that case.
