Fixes #2768

What

With OVIS_RUNTIME=herdr-core, a terminal on another machine the core reaches (hc machine add vps) was drawn as a workspace of this PC. hc lists and reports those terminals under the machine's name (vps/t14). groups() in server/herdr-core/snapshot.ts took every live terminal, so a labeled one whose herdr.space is not in this core's herdr-app document became a new workspace named from its where label (ubuntu). An unlabeled one landed under Other terminals.

Change

  • snapshot.ts: onOtherMachine(address) (an address with a /). groups() leaves those terminals out entirely: no workspace, tab or pane, whether they are labeled, placed in the document or neither.

  • adapter.ts:

    • The events subscription drops hc events for those terminals and skips them in the initial records, so no pane.created, status or layout.updated frames go out for them.
    • Events that name another machine (that machine's own herdr-app doc changes) are dropped too.
    • Pane-addressed calls (pane_id, target) refuse such an address as pane_not_found (agent_not_found for agent.get), so nothing reads from or types into another machine's terminal through this PC.
  • pin-label.ts: the pin bridge skips those terminals as well. Otherwise the Agents list, which no longer shows them, would prune their pins and the bridge would unpin them on the other machine.

Showing hc machines as PCs of their own is left for later. This only stops the fake workspace.

Validation

  • Reproduced on origin/main (b2d9e5d) with two isolated hc 0.1.17 cores (own HC_SESSION and XDG dirs; core B added to core A with hc machine add --via). Core A's terminal.list returned vps/t1 labeled herdr.space=spcREMOTE, where=ubuntu / 1. buildSnapshot gave workspaces ["ubuntu", "Other terminals"] with pane vps/t1 in spcREMOTE. hc's event stream reports the same terminals as terminal: "vps/t2".
  • After the fix, the same cores give ["Other terminals"] with only the local t1.
  • New tests in snapshot.test.ts, adapter.test.ts and pin-label.test.ts (herdr-core: a terminal of another hc machine becomes a fabricated workspace of this PC #2768) fail without the change. The adapter's event assertions fail with only the terminal guard or only the machine guard removed.
  • Live: a doc.set on the other core reaches this one as {"type":"doc","machine":"vps"} with no terminal.
  • bun test server/herdr-core/: 149 pass, 8 skip (live hc tests need OVIS_TEST_HC_BIN).
  • bun run check fast: ok (workflow syntax, generated types/themes, typecheck, build, unit tests 11250 pass / 0 fail / 44 skip).

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Terminals on machines added with hc machine add no longer appear as workspaces in the current PC’s sidebar. They remain hidden until those machines appear as PCs themselves.
    • Remote terminals are treated as unavailable for pane actions, and their status and lifecycle events no longer appear on the current PC.

Machine-qualified terminals are now excluded from this PC’s snapshot and event stream. Adapter lookups reject remote terminal targets with the applicable missing-entity error. Tests cover snapshot contents, lookups, and event delivery.

Remote-terminal filtering is implemented, but its initial-subscription path lacks a regression assertion. Adding the observer assertion would improve confidence; no current runtime failure is established.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(herdr-core): leave another hc machine's terminals out of this PC" names the main change: terminals from another hc machine are excluded from this PC's snapshot. It matches the summarized changes in snapshot.ts and adapter.ts and the linked issue objective. It is 68 characters, a single sentence, and uses a conventional fix scope.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #2768 requires machine-qualified terminals such as vps/tN to stay out of this PC's snapshot and events. onOtherMachine() detects addresses containing /. groups() excludes those terminals before workspace, tab, and pane placement. subscribe() filters remote initial records and drops remote events. Pane-addressed calls reject remote addresses with pane_not_found, and agent.get uses agent_not_found. The added snapshot and adapter tests cover placed, labeled, unlabeled, parented, event, and pane-send cases.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #2768. Production changes prevent another machine's terminals from appearing in the local snapshot, event stream, and pane-addressed operations. The added tests verify that behavior. The changelog documents the same behavior. No unrelated feature implementation is present.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description includes the issue reference, a detailed Change section, and a Validation section with commands, results, skipped live tests, reproduction details, and regression coverage. It does not explicitly identify contract-test coverage for the event-stream changes, but the description is otherwise complete.

server/herdr-core/adapter.test.ts: 1

Assert that the initial subscription record never reaches the observer.

The test sends a vps/t2 record in the events.subscribe response, but no assertion checks that the record is excluded. The initial-record filter at server/herdr-core/adapter.ts:776-781 could be removed without any current assertion failing. The remote record would then reach remember, which calls the SeenObserver at adapter.ts:668. Pass a spy to setup and assert that vps/t2 is never observed.

Suggested test change
     let channel = 0;
     const typed: unknown[] = [];
+    const observed: string[] = [];
     const { socket, cores } = await setup([terminal("t1"), terminal("vps/t2")], {
       "events.subscribe": () => {
         channel = cores.at(-1)!.channel();
         return { channel, seq: 1, terminals: [terminal("vps/t2", { status: { app: "codex", state: "idle" } })] };
       },
       "terminal.attach": (params) => { typed.push(params["terminal"]); return { channel: cores.at(-1)!.channel(), terminal: terminal("vps/t2") }; },
-    });
+    }, (address) => { observed.push(address); });
...
     expect(frames).toEqual([{ event: "pane.created", data: { type: "pane_created", pane_id: "t4" } }]);
+    expect(observed).not.toContain("vps/t2");
   });

This is a test-coverage gap for behavior that works today. The current implementation excludes the record, and the test passes. The gap lets a future change to the initial-record filter pass unnoticed.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

The event filter checks only the optional envelope event.terminal, while the created branch independently remembers event.data.address. If forwarded remote creation events omit the envelope terminal or qualify only the embedded record, remote records still reach remember, observeSeen, and lifecycle emission.

Remote-terminal creation could leak into this PC's event stream and remote records could reach the seen-state observer.

This can occur when: hc delivers a creation event with data.address equal to vps/t3 and an absent or unqualified envelope terminal.

Review round (omo + Codex Terra xhigh) on 67ae272, resolved in ba98ae3:

  • MEDIUM (both reviewers, reproduced): hiding a remote agent let a local pin change unpin it on the other machine. bridgePins still took vps/* terminals from hc's stream and listed local:vps/t2. The Agents list then pruned that row it could not see, and the bridge wrote herdr.pinned="" on vps/t2. Fixed: pin-label.ts skips other-machine addresses in the subscribe snapshot and in events, so they never enter live and no label is written for them. New test: pin-label.test.ts "leaves another hc machine's terminals alone" fails on 67ae272 (local:vps/t2, local:vps/t3 were listed).
  • LOW (Codex), confirmed live and fixed: another machine's herdr-app doc change emitted a local layout.updated. Against two isolated hc 0.1.17 cores, a doc.set on the other core reaches this one as {"type":"doc","machine":"vps"} with no terminal. The adapter now drops any event that names a machine. Local events carry no machine field. The adapter test covers it and fails without the guard.
  • LOW (omo), no change: attach and seen-label call hc with the address they are given. Direct attach resolves the pane through the (now filtered) session snapshot first (server/core/terminal-process.ts terminalInfoFor), so a vps/... id answers pane_not_found. observeSeen is only fed from the adapter's subscription, which now skips other machines' records and events.
  • LOW (omo), no change: onOtherMachine relies on hc's address grammar. hc 0.1.17 makes local addresses t<n> and names go through check_name. Only machine-qualified addresses contain /, as the doc comment says.

Re-review on ba98ae3: omo CLEAR, and Codex Terra (xhigh) reported no findings. Two unreproduced LOWs are left as notes, with no change:

  • onOtherMachine (snapshot.ts) reads any address with a / as another machine's. That holds while hc keeps local addresses bare (t7, as in hc 0.1.17). When machines become PCs of their own, prefer an explicit machine field from hc if it offers one.
  • The adapter drops every event that carries a machine field. Today only another machine's events carry it (verified live: {"type":"doc","machine":"vps"}), and this core's own events have none. If hc ever tags local events with it, revisit this.

Fixes #2497

## What

With `OVIS_RUNTIME=herdr-core`, every other machine the core reaches
(`hc machine add vps`, or added in the Herdr app) is now a PC of its own
in the sidebar, reached through this PC's core. Nothing of Ovis is
installed on that machine. Before, those machines did not show at all
(since #2795 their terminals were only kept out of this PC).

A PC of the core shows:
- its workspaces and tabs, as its own `herdr-app` document lays them out
(`doc.get { on }`), or as Ovis's labels and `ovis-layout` document
there;
- its live terminals, typing, screen reads, status and alerts;
- new workspaces, tabs and splits, started there (`terminal.run { on
}`).

## How

The server already shows a remote PC through an endpoint `{ url, token
}` that serves herdr's API (an SSH bridge, or the relay forward since
#2829). A machine of the core gets the same thing, run locally:

- `server/herdr-core/machine-scope.ts`: `MachineScopedConnection`, an
`HcConnection` that shows the core as that machine sees itself. Only
`lab/…` terminals are listed, without the prefix (`parent` too). Every
address goes back with the prefix. `terminal.run`, `doc.get` and
`doc.set` get `on: lab`. The event stream keeps only that machine's
events, including its `doc` events (`machine: "lab"`). The adapter, the
attach and the `herdr.seen` marker therefore run unchanged.
- `server/herdr-core/machine-entry.ts`: a server per machine
(`createServer({ bridgeOnly: true })`) on loopback with a random token,
over that connection. `OVIS_HC_MACHINE` selects the scoped connection in
`runtime.ts`.
- `server/herdr-core/machine-bridge.ts`: `listHcMachines`
(`machine.list`, temporary machines left out) and `startMachineBridge`,
which starts that server as a child. The child runs with an empty home
folder of its own and only the program and core-finding variables. This
PC's agent transcripts and processes are not that machine's, so none can
be taken for one of its panes. For the same reason, `pane.process_info`
gives no pids for another machine, and `worktree.*` is refused there,
because git would run here. The child ends when this server's stdin pipe
to it closes.
- `server/machines.ts`: a new PC kind, `hc`, read from `machine.list`
every 5 s. Its id is `hc-<machine id>`, which is stable across renames.
A rename restarts its server under the new name, because addresses
change. A machine that is not connected shows hc's reason. hc PCs are
never saved to `machines.json`, and rename, remove and setup are refused
("add, rename or remove it with `hc machine` or in the Herdr app"). In
the sidebar, the PC's manage panel says the same instead of offering
those buttons.

Answers to the issue's open questions:
1. SSH and relay PCs stay listed beside the core's machines.
2. The PC id is the hc machine's permanent id.

Safety (from the review round, each reproduced first with three isolated
cores, one in its own mount namespace):
- hc names a machine by a name another machine can take (`hc machine
rename`). Every scoped call goes to hc under the machine's permanent id
(`<id>/t3`, `on: <id>`), which hc takes wherever it takes the name, so
no call can reach another machine. The current name, looked up by id
first, is used only to filter what hc lists and reports by name. Before
this, input to the old `lab` landed on `vps` after `lab→lab2`,
`vps→lab`; after it, the call is refused and nothing reaches `vps`.
- The machine's server (`localFiles: false`) refuses the routes that
read or write this disk for its panes: `/api/fs/*`, `pane/files`,
`pane/image`, `workspace/diff/*`, `workspace/directories`,
`workspace/pr*` (gh and git run there). Before this, it served a file
only this PC has and could not see a file only that machine has. A new
workspace's folder goes to that machine unchecked: a folder that exists
only there now works.
- Its adapter socket sits in a short temp folder, so a long state folder
cannot push it past the unix socket limit. A scoped event line past 4
MiB is passed whole to the adapter's reader, which refuses it.

Known limits (in docs/guide.md):
- Chat history of agents on that machine is not read: their transcripts
are there.
- That machine's files are not reachable yet (refused, not guessed). The
client still offers those entry points and shows the refusal.
- Pins and "seen" are not shared with the Herdr app on that machine.
- Each machine costs one more Bun process on this PC.

## Validation

- `bun run check fast`: pass on the merged head (11959 pass, 0 fail;
typecheck, build, generated types fresh).
- `bun test server/herdr-core/ server/hc-machines.test.ts`: pass. The
new scoped-adapter tests and the manager tests go red when their owner
is broken: `on` dropped, another machine's terminals kept, pids kept, hc
PCs saved, no restart on rename, no id check, disk routes served.
- `OVIS_TEST_HC_BIN=<hc 0.1.14> bun test
./server/herdr-core/live.test.ts` and the same with hc 0.1.17: pass. The
new live test starts two isolated cores, adds the second with `hc
machine add --via`, then starts, types into and reads a terminal there
through the scoped adapter.
- Manual: a real server on an isolated core holding machine `lab`
(another isolated core). `lab` appears as a connected PC with its own
workspaces. Its live terminal attaches with history, and typing in the
browser reached `lab`'s shell (`hc read` there showed it). Workspace
create, input and read through `/api/machines/hc-…/` all work. The local
PC shows only its own terminal. Stopping the server ended the
per-machine child.
- Screenshots of the manage panel, dark and light at 1280 and 390, are
in the comment below.
