test(install): keep a herdr in /usr/bin out of the herdr-core installer tests - #2794
scripts/install-herdr-core.test.ts ran install.sh's functions with PATH=<stand-ins>:/usr/bin:/bin. On a machine with a real herdr in /usr/bin (a distro package, for example), pick_runtime's command -v herdr found it, so "picks herdr-core where there is no herdr" got RUNTIME herdr.
Each test now gets a PATH made of its stand-ins plus a temp dir that symlinks every tool in /usr/bin and /bin except herdr, herdr-core and hc. Only a test's own stand-ins can answer for those three names. The newline-in-PATH test keeps its shape (working dirs first, then a broken last element) by appending :/bin\nExecStartPost=... instead of breaking the only system dir.
I could not reproduce it. On b2d9e5d7 a fresh bun install applies patches/@legendapp%2Flist@3.3.5.patch, so node_modules/@legendapp/list/react.d.ts (the file ChatTimeline.tsx imports via @legendapp/list/react) has "scrollAdjust" in LegendListListenerType, and bun run typecheck passes. I tried:
bun 1.4.3, fresh worktree: pass
bun 1.4.4 (the issue's version) with an empty BUN_INSTALL_CACHE_DIR, and again with the shared cache: patch applied both times
install at e96b3693~1 (before the patch gained scrollAdjust), then check out b2d9e5d7 and bun install again: the patch is re-applied
The issue's grep looks at animated.d.ts, which the patch does not touch and which ChatTimeline.tsx does not import. A checkout whose node_modules still holds an older patched copy would show the reported error; rm -rf node_modules && bun install clears it. Nothing on main needs to change for it.
Validation
Failing first: with a fake herdr in /usr/bin (bwrap --overlay-src /usr/bin --tmp-overlay /usr/bin), the old test gives Received: "RUNTIME herdr\n" (23 pass / 1 fail), the issue's failure. With this change: 24 pass / 0 fail in that sandbox and on the plain host.
bun test scripts/install-herdr-core.test.ts: 24 pass
bun run check fast: passes (typecheck, build, unit tests)
…er tests (#2791)
The tests ran install.sh with PATH=<stand-ins>:/usr/bin:/bin, so a real herdr in /usr/bin made pick_runtime keep herdr. They now see the system tools through a temp dir without herdr, herdr-core and hc.

Tests
Improved installer test isolation so host installations of related command-line tools do not affect results.
Updated the newline-in-PATH test to include standard system tools.
The installer test fixture now uses a temporary system-tools directory that excludes herdr, herdr-core, and hc. The newline-in-PATH test now places /bin before the injected text.

Summary
Build and use a filtered PATH scripts/install-herdr-core.test.ts
The fixture creates symlinks to system tools except herdr, herdr-core, and hc, then uses the temporary directory in PATH. The newline-in-PATH test adds /bin before the injected directive.
devswha/ovis#2448: Both changes isolate installer tests from host-installed executables found on PATH.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review 189ee
The change improves test isolation on ordinary hosts but can fail on unusual system-directory layouts or dangling tool links. These are bounded test-only risks; merging is reasonable with owner awareness and targeted follow-up.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2791 is closed and marked as historical context only. No active directly linked targets remain, so no linked-issue coding requirements apply. The typecheck part of #2791 is not a requirement for this PR. The PR does not change typecheck code, and the PR description states that the typecheck failure could not be reproduced. The test part of #2791 is the only related work. The diff at the reviewed head (189eea9) changes scripts/install-herdr-core.test.ts only. It adds a SYSTEM directory of symlinks to /usr/bin and /bin tools, excluding herdr, herdr-core, and hc. Each pc() PATH now uses that directory. The newline-in-PATH test now appends :/bin before the newline payload. The changes address the closed issue's test-side context. They are not required by it.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The reviewed diff for scripts/install-herdr-core.test.ts contains only test-fixture changes. These are: the new imports readdirSync and symlinkSync, the SYSTEM symlink directory built from /usr/bin and /bin, the PATH change in pc(), and the newline-in-PATH test adjustment. Each change connects directly to the stated goal of keeping a host herdr out of pick_runtime tests. No production code, typecheck code, dependency, or patch change appears in the reviewed file. The PR summary also reports no other changes. The whole-PR file list was not fully enumerated because the output was truncated. This is a minor uncertainty and does not change the verdict, since the raw summary reports the same single-file scope.

Docstring coverage is 100.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 1 files.

Codex (adversarial): no HIGH or MEDIUM. One LOW, not reproduced and left as is: on a system where /usr/bin and /bin are separate directories, a dangling or non-executable /usr/bin/<tool> would shadow a working /bin/<tool> in the test's system dir. It also noted (pre-existing, not from this PR) that find_core still probes the fixed /usr/local/bin and /opt/homebrew/bin, so a real hc there can still reach these tests.

scripts/install-herdr-core.test.ts:49 Minor · Functional Correctness · Poor tradeoff
Isolate the fixed install directories in the find_core tests.
find_core searches /opt/homebrew/bin and /usr/local/bin after the PATH and saved settings. The test PATH does not exclude those directories. A valid herdr-core there makes the NONE expectations at lines 71, 73, 91 and 95 fail. The new comment at line 31, which says only the test's stand-ins answer, is therefore inaccurate. A full fix needs the install locations to be overridable, which means a change to install.sh.

Update find_core in install.sh so the fixed install locations can be overridden,
then configure the find_core test fixtures to point those locations at isolated
temporary directories; ensure NONE cases cannot discover a valid herdr-core from
the host’s /opt/homebrew/bin or /usr/local/bin, and keep the test comment
accurate.

- Around line 35-36: Filter the `/usr/bin` and `/bin` directory list in the
fixture loop using the already imported `existsSync` before `readdirSync` reads
each directory, preserving the existing behavior for directories that are
present.
- Around line 37-39: Update the system-tool linking loop to skip entries whose
source target does not exist before adding the name to linked. This lets later
usable entries, such as a /bin fallback, be linked when an earlier /usr/bin
entry is dangling; preserve the existing duplicate check and symlink behavior.
