Fixes #2536

What

Two read-to-send gaps in POST /api/pane/prompt/answer (server/prompt.ts), both left from #2508:

  1. Cursor before Enter. The read right before the answer's committing key checked the question but not the cursor. An arrow pressed in the terminal between the last look and Enter made Enter answer the row now under the cursor, not the one tapped (route answered 200). The check now also requires the cursor on the row the moves left it on, for keys that act on the row under the cursor (Enter, Space). Moves and typed text are unchanged.
  2. Hermes multi-select after the first tick. After the first Space, the remaining moves, ticks and the Enter that locks them went out with only the foreground-process check. If the terminal switched to another question after the first Space, the rest answered that question (200). For a Hermes multi-select answer, every key now goes through the same question (and cursor) check as the first one, waiting for the cursor as the first tick does.

The card id does not include ticks or cursor, so the id check still holds while ticks change on the same question.

Reproduction

Both reproduced on origin/main (9390fa1) with in-process route tests (mocked herdr RPC socket in a mkdtemp dir; no real herdr). Both races need the screen to change within milliseconds of a key, so a live session can't drive them deterministically:

  • cursor test: main sent ["down", "enter"] with Green under the cursor; now ["down"], 409 prompt_changed.
  • multi-select test: main sent ["space", "down", "down", "space", "enter"] to the other question; now ["space"], 409.

Not in this PR

Item 3 of the issue (the question-steps.test.ts case "a question bound whole, then shown cut, moves nothing" does not cover #2508's last round) is test-only and is left as is. The LOWs (pi/Claude ←/→ read-to-send gap, omp clipped past 4 rows) are also not addressed.

Validation

  • bun test server/prompt.test.ts server/question-steps.test.ts server/hermes-prompt.test.ts server/dialogs: 868 pass, 0 fail.
  • New tests fail on main and pass with the fix.
  • bun run check fast: all ok (typecheck, build, unit 11047 pass).
  • Not run: check full, Windows VM (no platform-specific path).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed an issue where terminal cursor movement could cause an answer to select the wrong option.
    • Multi-select answers now stop if the active question changes during selection, preventing keys from being applied to another question.

Answer verification now checks cursor position before cursor-sensitive actions and repeats question checks during Hermes multi-select toggles. Tests cover cases where the highlighted option or active question changes before all answer keys are sent.

Cursor and question checks
server/prompt.ts, server/prompt.test.ts, changelog.d/question-card-cursor-recheck.md
The answer flow checks the original dialog or question and, for Enter and Space actions, the cursor position. Hermes multi-select toggles repeat the question and cursor checks. Tests verify that the route returns 409 prompt_changed and sends no further keys when the highlight or question changes. The changelog records these fixes.

The change adds cursor and question checks before answer keys. The remaining checkbox-state concern is pre-existing, and the suggested additional test is a follow-up improvement; neither establishes a merge-blocking regression.

Explanation

The title names the main change: re-checking the cursor before Enter and each key of a Hermes multi-select. The raw summary and objectives confirm that the changeset adds cursor checks before committing keys and per-key question checks for Hermes multi-select answers. The title is specific and accurate, and it is 81 characters, slightly over a typical length but still clear.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has a Change section that explains the two read-to-send gaps, the resulting behavior, and the reproduction. It has a Validation section that lists the commands run with results and the checks skipped (check full and Windows VM). The issue link is present. The template asks for contract-test coverage for HTTP changes. The description covers the route POST /api/pane/prompt/answer and describes the new tests, but it does not state whether contract tests were run or updated, so that point is unaddressed.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Direct issue #2536 has two coding objectives. Both are implemented in server/prompt.ts (diff 9390fa1..71baa61).

Objective 1 (cursor re-check before Enter) [#2536]: sameQuestion gains an onCursor parameter. For Pi dialogs, fallback cards and the generic native-step path, the check now also requires dialog.selectedIndex, card.selectedIndex or shown.selectedIndex to equal cursor. onCursor is true only for non-move steps whose keys are all Enter or Space. Moves and typed text keep the previous check. The added test 'an arrow pressed in the terminal right before Enter' expects only ["down"] and 409 prompt_changed.

Objective 2 (every key of a Hermes multi-select) [#2536]: togglesInPlace is true for responder hermes-question with option_indices. For such answers, the verifyThenSend guard runs for every step, not only before the first committed key. The onRow wait also runs before each non-move tick and the Enter that locks them. The added test 'a multi-select answer stops once the terminal switches to another question' expects only ["space"] and 409 prompt_changed.

Not covered: issue item 3 (test at server/question-steps.test.ts:492). The PR leaves it unchanged by stated decision. It concerns test coverage of #2508, not the behaviour in the issue title, so it is not treated as a failing objective here.

Limits: the file read of server/prompt.ts was truncated at 16000 bytes. The definition of cursor and the non-hermes interaction branch of sameQuestion were not inspected. The interaction-plan test in prompt.test.ts ('highlight moves past the requested model') suggests that path already checks the highlight.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed hunks serve the two objectives of #2536.

  • server/prompt.ts: the onCursor parameter of sameQuestion, the cursor checks for the Pi and fallback responders, togglesInPlace for Hermes multi-select, and the adjusted onRow wait for non-move keys. These are the changes the objectives require.
  • server/prompt.test.ts: two new Hermes route tests for the two races. They are supporting tests for those objectives.
  • changelog.d/question-card-cursor-recheck.md: a changelog entry for the same fix. It is documentation for this change.

No unrelated files or behaviour changes were seen in the diff. The LOW items (pi/Claude ←/→ moves, omp clipped rows) are not changed, as the PR states.

Compare Hermes checkbox state before the final Enter.

sameQuestion checks the question identity and the cursor, but not the checkbox state. A terminal Space that unticks a row without moving the cursor passes these checks. The final Enter then locks the live ticks, which can differ from the requested set.

Add a same-question cursor case for Hermes multi-select ticks.

The new multi-select test at server/prompt.test.ts:5749-5758 changes the question text, not the cursor. A regression that drops the cursor check on a later Space would still pass it. Add a case where the highlighted row moves on the same question between ticks, and expect no further key and prompt_changed.

Review round after 71baa61 (pushed as 4c2d7e6):

Codex Terra 6.1 (xhigh) at 71baa61

  • HIGH, reproduced, fixed: the cursor check compared the read's card, while the settling read right before the key only compared the id. A cursor moved by the settling read still got Enter (200). readKnownPrompt now returns the settled card, and Enter/Space also need its cursor (and, for Hermes, its ticks) on the expected row. New test: an arrow pressed in the terminal by the settling read before Enter (fails at 71baa61).
  • MEDIUM, reproduced, fixed: a Hermes multi-select did not check the ticked rows, so a terminal Space on a planned row after the first tick made the answer's own Space untick it, and Enter locked a different set (200). The answer now tracks the ticks its Spaces leave, and each later Space and the Enter wait for the cursor and those ticks (refused after the read window otherwise). New test: a multi-select answer stops once the terminal ticks a row the answer's next Space would untick (fails at 71baa61).
  • MEDIUM, reproduced, not changed here: pi's select/confirm awaits piOwnsInput after its dialog check, so a cursor move during that process-info RPC is not seen. That ordering is deliberate (pi must still hold the pane after the read). It is the same read-to-key gap as the pi/Claude ←/→ LOW in Question cards: re-check the cursor before Enter and each key of a Hermes multi-select #2536, so it stays with that follow-up.
  • No valid answer refused because of the new cursor check (Codex tried).

omo: CLEAR at 71baa61; re-requested at 4c2d7e6.

CodeRabbit: auto incremental reviews are disabled on this repo, so no CodeRabbit review ran on this head.

Validation at 4c2d7e6: bun test server/prompt.test.ts server/question-steps.test.ts server/hermes-prompt.test.ts server/dialogs server/omp-ask.test.ts 882 pass, 0 fail; bun run check fast ok (unit 11049 pass).

Merge note: merged on the omo review (CLEAR at 4c2d7e6), Codex Terra (HIGH and one MEDIUM reproduced and fixed; the pre-existing pi ordering MEDIUM is listed above) and green checks. The chat-greeting browser failures were the unrelated flake being fixed separately. CodeRabbit skipped.

…-tab lock grant (#2766)

## Change

`scripts/chat-greeting-demo-regression.ts:213` failed on PR CI (#2678,
#2736, twice in a row each) with `held 0 !== 1`. The cause is a product
race introduced by #2709, not the test.

Since #2709, Send runs its whole claim inside
`navigator.locks.request("ovis-send:<draft>")` (`underSendLock`). A Web
Lock is granted in a later task, so `onSend`, and with it `afterSend`
(which takes an empty chat's greeting away and docks the composer), ran
after the click's frame. On an idle host the grant usually landed before
the next frame. Under CI load, a frame was painted first: the greeting
was still up and the composer was still lifted, the state the test
checks for.

- `Composer` reports a pressed Send whose claim is waiting
(`onClaim(+1)` at the press, `onClaim(-1)` once the claim ran, whether
it sent or not).
- `PaneTerminal` counts the waiting claims. While any is waiting, the
greeting is not due and the chat's empty line stays out (`sending`). The
greeting therefore goes in the frame of the press, as it did before
#2709. A claim that sends nothing (another tab sent the draft) brings
the greeting back when it ends.

## Test

The regression now holds the pane's `ovis-send` lock from the page
(standing in for another tab's acknowledgement) over the click. This
makes the late grant deterministic: on origin/main the test failed every
time (`greetings: 1`, `transform: matrix(... -305)`, `gap: 305`). With
the fix, the greeting is gone and the composer docked in the click's
frame while the claim waits. After the lock is released, the claim runs
(`heldSubmits.length === 1`, a bounded wait on the state, with no sleep)
and the greeting stays away.

## Validation

- `bun scripts/chat-greeting-demo-regression.ts`: failed on origin/main
with the new test, passes with the fix. Six parallel runs under load all
passed.
- `bun test src/components/Composer src/lib/composerDraft
src/lib/greeting src/components/PaneTerminal`: 72 pass.
- `bun run check fast`: passed (typecheck, build, 11084 unit tests).
- Not run: `bun run check full` (CI runs the browser jobs).
