fix(composer): claim and settle a pane's send in a cross-tab lock - #2709
Two tabs on one pane could both send its draft: ComposerDraftStore.begin reads the cross-tab sending lease and then writes it, and localStorage has no compare-and-swap. A tab whose React state still showed a draft that another tab had already sent and settled (its storage event not yet delivered) sent it again too.
underSendLock(key, section) (src/lib/composerDraft.ts) runs the section under navigator.locks.request("ovis-send:<draftKey>"). The lock is held for the claim and for the acknowledgement, not for the whole round trip.
Send's claim now runs inside the lock. It re-reads the draft from storage (ComposerDraftStore.claim), and it sends only if the draft still holds what this tab drew and every comment it carries is still waiting. Otherwise nothing is sent. The settle and end of the acknowledgement also run under the lock, so a claim never reads a draft that is half settled.
A quick reply's lease (sendBeside) and a pane move's rekey of the draft and comments (carryPaneState) take the same lock.
Fallback: navigator.locks exists only in a secure context. On plain HTTP (a LAN or Tailscale address) the section runs at once, as before: the lease is the best effort there, and the storage re-read still catches the stale-tab case. Sending is never refused for lack of the lock.
Already true on main: a stored lease time that is not finite is treated as no lease (Number.isFinite in inFlight).
Not in this PR: reply comments are still stored as one list per pane. removeSent after an acknowledgement rewrites that list and could drop a comment another tab added in the same instant. Comment reservations stay in each page's memory, so a claim never rewrites the list.
Validation
Repro on main 9381612: the new src/components/ComposerCrossTab.test.tsx fails 3 of 4 on main (the stale-tab send without Web Locks, the send queued behind another tab's lock, and the acknowledgement settling while another tab holds the lock). Its control test passes. With the fix, 4 of 4 pass.
bun test on ComposerCrossTab, ComposerRestored, composerDraft, composerDraftAgentOnly, paneMove, paneLifetime and replyComments: 61 pass.
bun run check fast: green (typecheck, build, unit 10924 pass / 0 fail).
Not run: check full, a real two-tab Chromium run (the issue's own repro).

Bug Fixes
Prevented duplicate messages when multiple tabs send the same draft, where cross-tab locking is supported.
Avoided sending drafts that have already been sent or whose carried reply comments are no longer available.
Ensured drafts are cleared after send acknowledgements are settled, and prevented repeated presses from sending the same draft more than once.
The composer now coordinates draft sends with a per-draft lock where Web Locks are available. It validates drafts and carried reply comments before sending, protects acknowledgement handling, and locks pane-state moves. Tests cover competing tabs and repeated sends.

claim refreshes the draft and begins sending only when its text matches the proposed payload. underSendLock uses Web Locks when available and otherwise runs the section immediately.
send validates carried comments and claims the draft inside the lock. sendBeside locks draft-lease creation and delivery. Tests cover draft removal by another tab, acknowledgement timing, and repeated presses. The changelog describes cross-tab locking and duplicate-send prevention.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "fix(composer): claim and settle a pane's send in a cross-tab lock" names the main change: the send claim and acknowledgement settle now run under a cross-tab Web Lock to stop duplicate sends from two tabs. It is concise and specific, and it matches the changeset (Composer.send, underSendLock, ComposerDraftStore.claim). It omits the stale-draft re-read and the pane-move lock, which is acceptable.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template. The Change section explains the problem (two tabs sending the same draft, with localStorage lacking compare-and-swap), the fix (underSendLock, claim re-read, lock on sendBeside and carryPaneState), the plain-HTTP fallback, and a known limitation (reply comments remain a per-pane list). The Validation section lists the commands run (bun test subset, bun run check fast) and results, plus what was skipped (check full, real two-tab Chromium run). The template asks for contract-test coverage for HTTP/WS changes; the description does not state whether that applies, but the change does not appear to touch HTTP/WS. It also does not restate the changelog entry, though the changelog file is in the diff.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed files relate to #2369. composerDraft.ts adds claim and underSendLock. Composer.tsx applies them to send, sendBeside, and the acknowledgement. paneMove.ts locks the pane move that the issue names. ComposerCrossTab.test.tsx covers the new behaviour. The changelog entry documents the fix and the plain HTTP limit. No unrelated behaviour change was found in the diffs reviewed. The reply comment list changes that the PR defers are missing work, not out-of-scope changes.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #2369. Most coding requirements are met at head adfa861.
Met:
Cross-tab section around Send. Composer.tsx send() runs its claim inside underSendLock. Inside the section it re-reads reply comments and calls composerDrafts.claim(draftKey, sent), which refreshes from storage and begins only if the stored text still equals the drawn text (composerDraft.ts).
Acknowledgement under the lock. The promise settle and ended() run inside underSendLock.
Quick-reply lease (sendBeside) takes the same lock before begin().
Pane move (paneMove.ts carryPaneState) moves comments and draft inside underSendLock on the old pane's draft key.
Plain HTTP fallback. Without navigator.locks, underSendLock runs the section at once, so sending is not refused. The storage re-read still catches the stale-tab case.
Test coverage: the new ComposerCrossTab.test.tsx cases, per the PR. Not re-run in this review.
Unmet:
Reply comment storage [#2369, #2350]. The issue requires that a write never erase another tab's saved comment, either by one key per comment or by running every write under the same lock. replyComments.ts is not changed. Its save path takes no lock. removeSent still rewrites the whole per-pane list during acknowledgement. A comment saved by another tab in that window can be dropped. The PR states this as out of scope, but the issue lists it as a requirement.
Not verified in this review:
Non-finite lease and reservation times (Number.isFinite in inFlight). The PR says this is already on main. composerDraft.ts shows no change there, but main was not inspected.
Return value on the locked path. underSendLock returns true before the section runs, so a claim refused inside the lock is not reported to the caller. Caller behaviour was not inspected.
Resolution
Make every write to a pane's reply comment list (save, removeSent, reserve/release, and any move) run under the same lock key as the draft, or store one key per comment so removeSent cannot rewrite other comments. Add a test where another tab saves a comment during an acknowledgement, and assert that the comment survives.

Review round (omo CLEAR at adfa861; Codex Terra adversarial review at adfa861). What changed in the follow-up commit:
Fixed (Codex HIGH 1 and 2): A claim that waited for the lock now sends only if the composer is still mounted and connected and still on the same draft key, so a queued claim never goes to another pane or over a new connection. In practice the wait is bounded by another tab's synchronous section, but the check is cheap. Test: does not send a claim that waited for the lock once the terminal disconnected fails without it.
Fixed (Codex HIGH 3):ComposerDraftStore.move re-reads both draft keys from storage first. A pane move no longer carries a draft another tab already sent before this tab heard of it. This was already the case on main. Test in paneMove.test.ts, which fails without it.
Not changed (Codex MEDIUM): on plain HTTP there is no navigator.locks, and the old lease window remains. This is the documented fallback from the issue: sending is never refused there.
Not changed (Codex MEDIUM): an edit made while a claim waits for the lock cancels that claim silently. The wait lasts milliseconds, while another tab runs a synchronous section, and the edited text stays in the box.
CodeRabbit posted only its summary at the time of this comment. bun run check fast is green on the new head (unit 10926 pass, 0 fail).
Second Codex Terra round at d452e3b (read-only). Its findings are recorded here and left unfixed: the one allowed fix round is done, and none of them reproduce in a real browser.
HIGH (unreproduced): a queued sendBeside prompt confirmation, or a Send claim, could run after a cancel or after a disconnect and reconnect while it waits for the lock. The only holders of ovis-send:<draft> are other tabs' synchronous sections (claim, acknowledgement settle/end, pane move). A wait lasts as long as one of those runs, far shorter than a user cancel or a reconnect. Reproducing it needs a lock held artificially in a test.
MEDIUM (unreproduced): back-to-back pane moves A→B→C while A's lock is held could run out of order. Same bound on the wait as above.
MEDIUM: locks.request rejecting (the spec allows SecurityError, e.g. in an opaque-origin frame) would skip the section. Ovis is served as a top-level page or the Capacitor app, where the lock manager is available. Possible follow-up: fall back to running the section at once on rejection.
MEDIUM: a claim refused after waiting returns no "Not sent" note. The box keeps its text, and the refusal means another tab is sending it.

Close the send race when Web Locks are unavailable.
Without Web Locks, underSendLock runs the claim unguarded. Two tabs can read an empty lease before either writes it, then both send the same draft. The server accepts both, because its dedup is per connection. This predates the PR. A full fix needs a server-side claim per draft.

Coordinate the reply-comment move with the new pane's send lock.
carryPaneState writes the moved comments to the new pane's key under only the old key's lock (src/lib/paneMove.ts:26). A send on the new pane settles under the new key's lock and calls replyComments.removeSent (src/components/Composer.tsx:848). That call reads the list and then writes it back without a lock (src/lib/replyComments.ts:105-111). If another tab's move writes the new key between those two steps, the write restores a list without the moved comments, and they are lost.
Locking removeSent on the new key does not close this gap, because the settle already holds that lock. The move must also take the new key's lock. underSendLock does not wait for a nested section, so a nested call inside the old-key callback releases the old lock too early. The helper must report completion, or the acquisition order must change, before this can be fixed safely. Merging by ID in removeSent alone does not close the gap either, because it still reads and writes in two steps.

Cover a second tab's live send lease at the Composer level.
Every case in ComposerCrossTab.test.tsx renders one Composer. None presses Send while a matching draft has a live ovis:composer-sending: lease in storage. The store suite protects the lease in ComposerDraftStore.begin. A regression that stops the Composer send path from reaching that check, such as claim skipping begin, would leave the Composer suite passing.
Two Composers would share the module-level composerDrafts object, so they would not model two tabs. Write the other tab's lease into the shared storage instead:

Round after merging main (post #2683/#2684). omo returned BLOCK at de4297c, and CI at 4cfbf39 failed composer-fit-demo-regression. What changed:
Fixed (omo HIGH, reproduced): a quick reply or Confirm waiting for the lock ran after its composer unmounted. That reply could land on whichever pane was shown by then. sendBeside's locked section now checks what Send's does: still mounted, still connected, same draft key, and the same connection it was pressed on. Test: does not send a quick reply that waited for the lock once its composer is gone.
Fixed (omo MEDIUM, reproduced): a Send waiting for the lock went out after a disconnect and reconnect. A counter goes up on each disconnect, and both sections refuse a press made before the drop. Test: ... across a disconnect and reconnect.
Fixed (Codex/omo LOW): a locks.request that rejects before granting runs the section at once, as plain HTTP does, instead of skipping it.
Fixed (CI regression in this PR): the acknowledgement no longer waits for the lock. Settling under the lock left the sent text in the box a moment after the message appeared in the chat, which composer-fit-demo-regression caught. The claim now reads the other tab's lease before it reads the draft. A tab's acknowledgement clears the draft before it ends its lease, so a claim sees either the send still on its way or the settled draft, never the stale text with no lease. Test: does not send a draft whose other tab's acknowledgement lands while this tab claims it (it fails when the claim reads the text first).
Still LOW and unchanged: a claim refused after waiting shows no note (the text stays in the box), and a pane move's wait for the lock.
Merge note: CodeRabbit was rate-limited; merged on the omo review (CLEAR at 3ba5bfa), two Codex Terra rounds (round-1 HIGHs fixed with tests, including a queued quick reply landing on another pane and a queued send surviving a reconnect), and green required checks. Remaining unreproduced notes are in the PR comments / #2356.
…ne mid-send (#2741)
Fixes#2356.
## What was wrong
With two tabs of one browser on the same pane, moving the pane to
another workspace from one tab while the other tab's message carrying
reply comments was on its way left those comments for the next message:
- Only the tab that moved the pane knew where the comments went
(`ReplyCommentStore.forwards`, in memory). The sending tab acknowledged
under the old pane ID, found nothing there, and the sent comments stayed
under the new ID.
- No other tab knew which comments that send carried, so a message from
the moved pane in any other tab could carry them again before the first
was acknowledged.
#2709 (cross-tab send lock) already stops two tabs claiming the same
draft, and `carryPaneState` runs inside that lock, so the moving tab
sees the other tab's send lease. This builds on it.
## What changes
- `src/lib/paneMove.ts`: inside the old ID's send lock, the move reads
the old draft's send lease from storage (`sendLease`, from any tab) and
passes it to `ReplyCommentStore.move`.
- `src/lib/replyComments.ts`:
- **Hold in storage.** Each comment moved while that send is on its way
is stored with `heldFor: { draft, at }`, the lease it waits for. Every
tab's `unreserved` leaves it out while the lease in storage still has
that `at`, so the hold ends with that exact send (acknowledged, refused,
or lapsed after `SEND_LEASE_MS`). A comment already held for an earlier
send keeps that hold when it moves again.
- **Move record.** Such a move also leaves `{ movedTo, at }` under the
old comments key (it reads as no comments, and the prefix is already
under the herdr fence of `paneLifetime.ts`). `removeSent` follows these
records as well as this tab's own; a record older than `SEND_LEASE_MS`
is not followed. A move of comments still held for an earlier send is
recorded too, so a chain of moves is followed to the end. Records are
not removed on acknowledgement, since another send may need the same
record; they lapse.
- **Wake-ups.** A storage event for a send lease refreshes the comment
readers, and `refresh` makes `unreserved` readers read again; the moving
tab refreshes them when the lease it moved under ends there.
- **IDs.** Comment IDs are random instead of a per-tab counter. Two tabs
saving in the same millisecond got the same ID, and a send removes by
ID.
- `src/lib/composerDraft.ts`: the lease parsing moved into the exported
`sendLease` (unchanged behaviour), plus `isSendLeaseKey`.
- No record or hold is written when no send is on its way, so ordinary
moves leave nothing behind.
## Validation
- Reproduced on origin/main 9390fa1: the first new test in
`src/lib/paneMove.test.ts` models each tab as its own
`ComposerDraftStore` + `ReplyCommentStore` over one shared storage (the
issue's steps). On main it leaves `["carried", "for the next message"]`
under the new ID; with the fix only `["for the next message"]`.
- The five cases from the Codex review below (third tab, second move,
two sends with two moves, a later send ending first, a retired herdr's
send) are tests in the same file; all five fail on the first head
d54847a and pass now. A further test checks an expired record is not
followed.
- `bun test` paneMove, replyComments, composerDraft,
composerDraftAgentOnly, paneLifetime, diffLineNotes and the Composer
tests: 83 pass, 0 fail.
- `bun run check fast`: green (typecheck, build, unit 11052 pass / 0
fail).
- Not run: `check full`, a real two-tab Chromium run.
## Not covered
- The agent-only mark race from the issue's last comment
(`ovis:composer-agent-only:<pane>` cleared in a separate storage
operation from the draft) is a draft-format change and is not touched
here.
- Comments moved while another tab's send is on its way are held back
whole, including one saved after that send began; it goes with the next
message once that send settles. A hold whose sending tab closed lapses
with the lease (120 s) but frees in other tabs only at their next
comment refresh.
…-tab lock grant (#2766)
## Change
`scripts/chat-greeting-demo-regression.ts:213` failed on PR CI (#2678,
#2736, twice in a row each) with `held 0 !== 1`. The cause is a product
race introduced by #2709, not the test.
Since #2709, Send runs its whole claim inside
`navigator.locks.request("ovis-send:<draft>")` (`underSendLock`). A Web
Lock is granted in a later task, so `onSend`, and with it `afterSend`
(which takes an empty chat's greeting away and docks the composer), ran
after the click's frame. On an idle host the grant usually landed before
the next frame. Under CI load, a frame was painted first: the greeting
was still up and the composer was still lifted, the state the test
checks for.
- `Composer` reports a pressed Send whose claim is waiting
(`onClaim(+1)` at the press, `onClaim(-1)` once the claim ran, whether
it sent or not).
- `PaneTerminal` counts the waiting claims. While any is waiting, the
greeting is not due and the chat's empty line stays out (`sending`). The
greeting therefore goes in the frame of the press, as it did before
#2709. A claim that sends nothing (another tab sent the draft) brings
the greeting back when it ends.
## Test
The regression now holds the pane's `ovis-send` lock from the page
(standing in for another tab's acknowledgement) over the click. This
makes the late grant deterministic: on origin/main the test failed every
time (`greetings: 1`, `transform: matrix(... -305)`, `gap: 305`). With
the fix, the greeting is gone and the composer docked in the click's
frame while the claim waits. After the lock is released, the claim runs
(`heldSubmits.length === 1`, a bounded wait on the state, with no sleep)
and the greeting stays away.
## Validation
- `bun scripts/chat-greeting-demo-regression.ts`: failed on origin/main
with the new test, passes with the fix. Six parallel runs under load all
passed.
- `bun test src/components/Composer src/lib/composerDraft
src/lib/greeting src/components/PaneTerminal`: 72 pass.
- `bun run check fast`: passed (typecheck, build, 11084 unit tests).
- Not run: `bun run check full` (CI runs the browser jobs).

ComposerDraftStore.beginreads the cross-tab sending lease and then writes it, and localStorage has no compare-and-swap. A tab whose React state still showed a draft that another tab had already sent and settled (itsstorageevent not yet delivered) sent it again too.underSendLock(key, section)(src/lib/composerDraft.ts) runs the section undernavigator.locks.request("ovis-send:<draftKey>"). The lock is held for the claim and for the acknowledgement, not for the whole round trip.ComposerDraftStore.claim), and it sends only if the draft still holds what this tab drew and every comment it carries is still waiting. Otherwise nothing is sent. The settle and end of the acknowledgement also run under the lock, so a claim never reads a draft that is half settled.sendBeside) and a pane move's rekey of the draft and comments (carryPaneState) take the same lock.navigator.locksexists only in a secure context. On plain HTTP (a LAN or Tailscale address) the section runs at once, as before: the lease is the best effort there, and the storage re-read still catches the stale-tab case. Sending is never refused for lack of the lock.Number.isFiniteininFlight).Not in this PR: reply comments are still stored as one list per pane.
removeSentafter an acknowledgement rewrites that list and could drop a comment another tab added in the same instant. Comment reservations stay in each page's memory, so a claim never rewrites the list.Validation
src/components/ComposerCrossTab.test.tsxfails 3 of 4 on main (the stale-tab send without Web Locks, the send queued behind another tab's lock, and the acknowledgement settling while another tab holds the lock). Its control test passes. With the fix, 4 of 4 pass.bun teston ComposerCrossTab, ComposerRestored, composerDraft, composerDraftAgentOnly, paneMove, paneLifetime and replyComments: 61 pass.bun run check fast: green (typecheck, build, unit 10924 pass / 0 fail).check full, a real two-tab Chromium run (the issue's own repro).
