fix(chat): clear waiting copies after a sibling disconnect - #2717
A sent follow-up can remain as a faded waiting bubble beside its transcript turn after another pane disconnects. This happens when that disconnect removes the loaded transcript baseline and the browser clock is ahead of the PC.
Connection cleanup now retains the loaded baseline, so the transcript clears the waiting copy. Replacing a Herdr instance still forgets its baselines. The existing queued-message presentation stays the same; the reference is Claude Code's message queue.
The mounted regression fails on upstream 74dfea3e before the production fix; the four affected test files pass afterward: 93 tests.
bun run check fast: 10,941 passed, zero failures, 42 skipped; typecheck, build, workflow and generated-file checks passed.
A fictional component fixture at 390px and 1280px reproduces one stale waiting copy before the fix and none afterward, with a disconnected sibling and 2,000ms clock offset. Before/after screenshots and reproduction are on a separate orphan branch. These are automated fixture captures, not native-agent dogfooding.
Review follow-up: accepted connected-PC rosters prune baselines for panes seen before and now closed; unlisted new panes and disconnected PCs retain theirs. An empty, unread transcript clears only its own old baseline.
Initial correctness and independent adversarial review: no findings. Full integration/browser suites and native macOS/Windows checks were not run locally.

The sibling-disconnect fix preserves transcript matching, but closed-pane transcript baselines now survive disconnects and can accumulate during long sessions. This is a bounded memory-retention concern suitable for owner awareness and follow-up.

Clear the stale turn baseline when the transcript is replaced.
When the chat replaces its history, it clears loaded but keeps the old shown baseline. A send made before the next loaded read captures those old turns. If the agent later writes a turn with the same key, newerThanSend rejects it. The faded waiting copy then stays until WAITING_SEND_MS expires. The retained baseline is only one way this can happen, so a fix must cover the reset path, not only the disconnect path.

Clear the stale turn baseline when the transcript is replaced.
Fixed in f160973. An empty, unread transcript now drops that pane's old baseline before the next send can capture it. Other panes keep theirs. The new regression repeats an old turn after a reset and confirms that its waiting copy clears. The focused four-file run passes 93 tests.
…evswha#2717)
Forget a pane's baseline only where ChatView replaces its history, not on
every empty unread mount. Keep baselines across a disconnect only for a PC
whose snapshots name their herdr, and skip pruning on a roster read from a
herdr the page already left.
Thanks @christso. I pushed two commits to this branch as a maintainer edit: a merge of main and e812968, which fixes three issues our reviews reproduced:
A remount dropped the baseline.settleWaitingSends deleted the baseline on every empty, unread settle. That also runs on each ChatView mount (pane switch). The baseline then came back with a later read time, so an older identical turn could clear a new send's bubble. A send made while the chat was still loading also lost its baseline and showed the stale copy again. That rule is gone. ChatView now calls a new forgetWaitingBaseline(key) only where it replaces the history (the history_id change and 409 resets). The replaced-transcript test uses that call.
Baselines survived a disconnect on a bridge that names no herdr. Without a herdr_lifetime, a replacement herdr that reuses a pane id goes unnoticed. clearMachineWaitingSends now keeps baselines only for a PC whose lifetime is proven. Otherwise it forgets them, as before.
A stale roster pruned a live pane. A delayed roster from a herdr the page already left (paneLifetimes skips it) could still prune the new herdr's panes. pruneWaitingSends now skips a snapshot whose lifetime is not the current one.
Re-review at e812968: omo plus Codex Terra (xhigh) came back CLEAR, with no blocking findings.
Not blocking. These stay as notes, since neither was reproduced:
LOW: pruneWaitingSends does not compare snapshot sequence numbers. In theory, an older cached roster for the same herdr seen during a reconnect could prune a live pane's baseline. The worst case is a duplicate waiting bubble until it expires after 60 s.
LOW: forgetWaitingBaseline also runs on the gap-fill and 409 resets, which may keep the same history. That is conservative: the worst case is likewise a duplicate bubble until it expires.
The one MEDIUM the reviewers raised also happens on main without this PR, so it is tracked separately in #2849.
Thanks @christso! The bug reproduced on main and your regression caught it. We added three small fixes on your branch for edge cases Codex and our review found (baseline on history replacement, disconnects, outlived rosters), each with a test. Merging. One older issue we noticed is tracked in #2849.
Merge note: external fix; supply-chain check done; bug reproduced (new test fails on main); omo CLEAR at this head; Codex Terra xhigh reviewed; required checks green; CodeRabbit skipped.
…nder clock skew (#2898)
## Change
Fixes#2849.
A sent message's faded waiting copy could clear before its own turn
arrived. It happened when
another device (or the terminal) sent the same words shortly before, the
browser's clock ran
ahead of the PC, and the chat had read its turns a while after the
newest one.
The browser has no PC clock except the turns' own times. So the skew
bound it used was the gap
between the chat's first read and the newest turn, and that gap grows
the longer after the newest
turn the read happens. Any identical user turn written inside that
window could claim the send,
and nothing on the client tells a turn written just before the send from
one just after it.
- `GET /api/pane/conversation` now adds `server_time` to a 200 answer:
the PC's clock as it
answered, as `/api/pane/plan` and `/api/pane/omo-tasks` already do. It
is not part of the
ETag, so an unchanged transcript still answers 304. The field is
additive and optional.
- The chat's baseline keeps that time (`answeredAt`). The skew bound is
the read time minus the
later of `answeredAt` and the newest turn. With a fresh answer it is
about the real skew plus
the read's latency. An empty chat's read is bounded the same way now.
- An older bridge sends no `server_time`, so the previous bound applies
unchanged.
The bound holds only when the transcript's times and the server's clock
are on the same PC.
That is how every supported setup reads them: the bridge reads the
transcript from its own disk.
The waiting copy looks the same as before (it follows Claude Code's
queued-message look, as in #2717).
This PR changes an HTTP contract, so it waits for a real review.
## Validation
- Failing first:
- `src/lib/sentWaiting.test.ts`: the issue's reproduction (2 s skew,
read 10 s after the newest
turn) and an empty chat's first message. Both fail on `origin/main`
483fdb8 with
`currentWaitingSends` empty.
- `server/pane-routes.test.ts`: `server_time` on a 200 answer, and a 304
still answered. It fails
without the route change.
- Review round, failing at 5516483:
- `src/lib/sentWaiting.test.ts`: clock drift over an idle hour.
- `src/lib/machineSession.test.ts`: a row's `sending` frame replayed
after its Enter.
- `server/omo.contract.test.ts` now expects `server_time` on its 200
answer (10 pass).
- `bun run check fast` on the merged head 84a5a18 (heavy wrapper on
old-desktop): workflow syntax,
generated types and themes, typecheck, build and unit tests all passed.
Unit tests: 11,665 pass,
0 fail, 46 skip.
- Review: an independent Claude Opus adversarial review. Its findings
and how each was resolved
are in a PR comment. CodeRabbit was rate-limited and Codex could not run
on the lane's PC.
- Skipped locally: `check full` (integration and browser lanes, left to
CI) and native macOS and
Windows runs. The UI wiring is one argument in `ChatView`'s existing
settle effect, with no
mounted ChatView test.

…ueued row stamp (#2973)
## Change
Fixes#2949.
#2898 bounded a sent message's waiting copy with the PC's `server_time`
from the chat's first read of
its turns. Three windows stayed open (and two more were found by reading
the code): an idle chat
kept that first read and the drift allowance grew with it, a queued row
fell back to the turns'
times, a bridge upgraded under an open chat was never asked again, a
cached answer was timed by
the mount, and a wall clock step on this device could keep the copy
beside its own turn until it
expired. In each case an identical turn another device or the terminal
wrote just before the send
could clear its waiting copy (#2849's symptom), or the copy could stay
too long.
The fix gives the browser a fresh PC time for every read and every
queued try, and measures what
has passed since on this browser's monotonic clock:
- `GET /api/pane/conversation` sends `x-server-time` on both 200 and 304
answers (the body's
`server_time` stays). It is not part of the ETag, so an unchanged
transcript still answers 304.
- The remote-PC proxy (`server/machine-api.ts`) passes `x-server-time`
through.
- Over the relay, an older phone refuses a response header it does not
list, so the PC sends
`x-server-time` only to a phone that offered the new
`server-time-header` mux feature in HELLO
(`shared/relay-mux.ts`, `server/relay/session.ts`,
`shared/relay-channel.ts`; `docs/relay.md`).
- `src/lib/api.ts` records each answered read's PC time with
`performance.now()` as the answer
arrived (`observeWaitingClock`), whatever becomes of the body. A cached
answer drawn on remount
therefore keeps its real receipt time, and each read replaces the one
before.
- `waitingBaseline` turns that into `pcFloor`: the PC's clock was at
least the answer's time plus
the monotonic time since (less 0.1% drift) when the send began. A turn
older than that is not the
send's own. No wall clock time of this browser enters that bound, so a
clock step does not move
it. Without any PC time (an older bridge) the previous turns-only bound
applies unchanged.
- A queued row now carries `sending_at` (`PendingMessage`, optional):
the PC's clock as the try went
out, before anything is typed. It is dropped when the row is queued or
held again and kept while
uncertain. A row's waiting copy is matched against it directly, so a
`sending` frame replayed
after the Enter is still settled by its own turn.
Design reference: as in #2717 and #2898, the waiting copy follows Claude
Code's queued-message look;
nothing visible changes here, only when the copy clears.
This PR changes an HTTP contract (a response header), a relay mux
feature and the pending-message
frame, so it waits for a real review.
## Validation
- Failing first, checked by breaking the owner of each and watching the
test go red:
- `src/lib/sentWaiting.test.ts`: another device's identical turn before
the send (rewritten for
the new clock), an idle chat bounded by a later 304 from an upgraded
bridge (#2949 items 2 and
3), an empty chat. Removing the `pcFloor` bound fails all three. A wall
clock step (item 5) and
an hour of drift are covered as non-regressions.
- `src/lib/machineSession.test.ts`: a queued row whose `sending` frame
came after its Enter, with
another device's identical turn 300 ms before the PC took it (item 1).
Using the chat's clock
instead of `sending_at` fails it.
- `src/lib/conversationFetch.test.ts`: a 304's `x-server-time` refreshes
the bound, timed as the
answer arrived (items 2 and 4). Ignoring the 304 header fails it.
- `server/relay/session.contract.test.ts`: `x-server-time` only to a
phone that offered the
feature. Sending it to every phone fails it.
- `server/pane-routes.test.ts` (header on 200 and 304),
`server/machine-proxy.test.ts` (passed
through on a 304), `server/pending-input.test.ts` (`sending_at` stamped
and dropped).
- `bun run typecheck` passed; the affected unit and contract files
passed (1,059 tests, 0 fail).
- `bun run check fast` on e064856, merged with main (heavy wrapper on
old-desktop): workflow syntax,
generated types and themes, typecheck, build and unit tests all passed.
Unit tests: 12,016 pass,
0 fail, 37 skip.
- Reviews: omo and Codex (Terra, xhigh). Findings and how each was
resolved are in two PR comments;
two pre-existing windows went to #2974. A sleeping device (whose
monotonic clock stops) is counted
by the wall clock, and a queued row its chat never read is bounded by
its stamp.
- Skipped locally: `check full` (integration and browser lanes, left to
CI) and native macOS,
Windows and phone runs. There is no visual change.
