fix(codex): count a same-prompt competitor only by its latest turn - #2699
#2636 made Codex Chat's exact-answer match refuse while any other candidate conversation in the folder had ever recorded the prompt shown, in any turn. That also refused a case that bound correctly before it: another conversation asked the same prompt in an earlier turn and has finished an unrelated later turn since. With short repeated prompts (for example "continue") in two Codex sessions in one folder, a pane's Chat then stayed unbound.
askedElsewhere in server/codex.ts now ignores a competitor's earlier prompts only when its read proves its latest turn finished: its last finished turn is recorded with its own prompt, and that prompt is the last one it recorded. Everything else counts as before:
a competitor whose last finished turn was asked the prompt shown, or whose read cut that turn's prompt;
a competitor whose read holds no prompt at all (including the unread rule for rendered answers);
a competitor with a later turn not read finished (a prompt recorded after its last finish, or a finish recorded without its turn), since that turn may have begun after the screen was read, while the screen still showed the earlier one.
The issue also listed "another conversation's last finished turn had its prompt cut by the tail read". That case is not relaxed here: review reproduced that telling such a competitor's answer apart from the one shown is not reliable (a reference-style link's definition never appears on screen), so it stays an accepted fail-safe refusal and is pinned by a test.
Reproduced on origin/main: the new test "matches an exact reply while another conversation asked the prompt only before its latest finished turn" fails with Received: null (expected "own"); with this change it passes. Its race assertions (a later prompt not finished, an ID-less finish) fail on the PR's earlier head 0fe6551e (Received: "own") and pass now.
bun test server/codex: 361 pass, 0 fail.
bun run check fast at the merged head: workflow syntax, generated types/themes, typecheck, build ok; unit tests 10896 pass, 0 fail, 42 skip.
Integration/browser and native Windows were not run locally (left to CI).
An exact Codex reply stayed unbound when another same-folder conversation asked the prompt shown only in an earlier turn, or its last finished turn's prompt was cut from the read with another answer. Fixes#2656.
Codex Chat now more reliably rebinds a pane to the right conversation when another conversation in the same folder previously used the same prompt but has since completed a turn with a different prompt.
Conversations with a matching latest prompt can still prevent a pane from switching, including when prompt details are incomplete or the latest turn is unfinished.
Codex Chat now allows a completed-answer match when another conversation used the screen prompt in an earlier turn but finished a later turn with a different prompt. Missing, matching, or potentially unfinished competing prompts can still prevent a match.
The matching guard considers another conversation’s latest finished-turn prompt. Tests cover different, missing, repeated, and unfinished prompts, plus ID-less events. The changelog records the pane-binding condition.

A narrow mixed-record case can leave a pane on the terminal instead of binding its completed answer. This is bounded missed-binding behavior, with production reachability still uncertain; merging warrants owner awareness and follow-up.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #2656 has two requirements for the same-prompt collision refusal in askedElsewhere (server/codex.ts, ~1337-1357). The first requirement is met. Its second requirement is not met.
Met: [#2656] A competitor asked the shown prompt only in an earlier turn no longer blocks binding once its latest finished turn is read as finished with its own prompt as the last recorded prompt. The added early return (if (last !== null && prompts.at(-1) === last.asked)) limits the check to that latest prompt. The test 'matches an exact reply while another conversation asked the prompt only before its latest finished turn' pins this.
Met: [#2656] A competitor still counts when its latest turn was asked the shown prompt, when a later turn is unfinished, when a prompt is recorded after its last finish, or when a finish has no turn_id. These cases fall through to the unchanged rule. Tests cover them.
Not met: [#2656] The issue lists 'another conversation's last finished turn had its prompt cut by the 1 MiB tail read' as a case main bound correctly and that must stop refusing. The PR keeps refusing it as a fail-safe. The new test 'its finished turn's prompt cut from the read' expects null. The issue's own narrowing rule ('count a competitor only when the shown prompt is its latest turn') does not count this case, so the issue and the PR conflict here. The PR's reason (a reference-style link's definition is absent from the screen, so the answer cannot be told apart) is stated, but the issue has not been amended.
Limitation: the full askedElsewhere function was not readable in one view. This verdict rests on the diff hunk and the test diff.
Resolution
Choose one path and apply it before this PR is judged complete. (a) Relax the refusal for a competitor whose last finished turn's prompt is absent from the tail read, as #2656 describes. Update the test 'its finished turn's prompt cut from the read' to expect the match. (b) Amend #2656 to exclude the cut-prompt case and record the fail-safe rationale (reference-style link definitions not visible on screen) in that issue. Then re-assess against the amended requirement.

Review found that judging a cut-prompt competitor's answer by its anchor misses renderings such as reference links, which could bind the wrong conversation. Keep #2636's rule for it; only an earlier-turn prompt stops counting.
… finished
A later turn that began after the screen was read, or a finish recorded without its turn, may leave the earlier turn on screen; only a latest turn read finished stops earlier prompts counting.
Review round on 2dcd51c6 (omo + Codex Terra adversarial), resolved at 1f74d33e:
HIGH (reproduced by both): relaxing a competitor whose last finished turn's prompt was cut could hide an answer that renders the same (a reference-style link's definition is never on screen), binding the wrong conversation. Fixed in 0fe6551e by keeping fix(codex): identify completed rendered replies #2636's rule for cut prompts; pinned by a test.
MEDIUM (reproduced by Codex, round 2): a later prompt recorded between the screen read and the rollout read (or a task_complete without turn_id) made the earlier, shown turn stop counting. Fixed in 1f74d33e: earlier prompts stop counting only once the latest turn reads finished with its own prompt; pinned by a test that fails on 0fe6551e.
Known, not fixed (round 1 MEDIUM): a competitor could finish a whole new turn between the screen read and the rollout read; this needs an entire agent turn to complete in that window, so it is left as is.

Cover the mixed-record competitor in the earlier-prompt test.
The new test has no competitor that combines a parsed user record with a latest finished turn that has only an item_completed prompt. The branch at server/codex.ts:1356 is therefore not exercised with a non-empty users list.
That branch compares the earlier turn's parsed user text with the shown prompt. The latest finished turn's own prompt is not checked in that case. A competitor whose earlier turn asked the shown prompt, and whose latest finished turn asked a different prompt, is refused. The latest turn is read as finished and does not ask the shown prompt, so this refusal is not required by the narrowed rule.
Add that competitor to the earlier-prompt test and expect "own". On the current code, that assertion fails and exposes the refusal. Refusal is the fail-safe outcome, so the impact is limited to a missed binding. Production reachability depends on whether a turn is recorded with only one of the two prompt records, which is not established.
