Change

herdrRpc uses Bun's unbuffered socket API. write returns the number of bytes accepted, not a Node-style backpressure boolean. One write can send only a prefix of a large request. The remaining bytes, including the newline, are lost, so herdr cannot parse the request and the caller times out.

Keep one UTF-8 request buffer and send its remaining bytes on drain. Never repeat a prefix or reconnect to resend the request. A sender can still cancel before any byte is sent; once a frame starts, finish that same frame.

Also keep failures after connecting separate from connect_failed. The old trailing .catch includes exceptions from serialization, the guard and the write itself. Prompt answers treat connect_failed as proof that sending never started and allow the same answer to be retried. Connected failures now use socket_error. Only a rejected connection uses connect_failed.

Evidence

The new tests use an owned local socket server and the real Bun client, with no mocked connection, write or drain callbacks. Large ASCII and UTF-8 requests must arrive intact on one connection and receive a matching reply. The tests cover a connected serialization exception and a peer closing during a large request, but not the prompt HTTP route.

Same command against upstream main 9ef34f85 and this change:

$ bun test server/herdr/rpc-write.test.ts

Before:
(fail) delivers one complete large x frame across real socket backpressure
HerdrError: herdr fixture.write timed out after 2000ms
(fail) delivers one complete large 🙂 frame across real socket backpressure
HerdrError: herdr fixture.write timed out after 2000ms
(fail) keeps a connected serialization failure distinct from connect_failed
       Expected: "socket_error"
       Received: "connect_failed"
(pass) does not reconnect after the peer closes during a large request
1 pass, 3 fail

After:
(pass) delivers one complete large x frame across real socket backpressure
(pass) delivers one complete large 🙂 frame across real socket backpressure
(pass) keeps a connected serialization failure distinct from connect_failed
(pass) does not reconnect after the peer closes during a large request
4 pass, 0 fail, 14 expect() calls

Validation

  • CHECK_MAX_RUNS=2 bun run check run bun test server/herdr/client.test.ts server/herdr/seam.test.ts server/herdr/rpc-write.test.ts: passed, 33 tests and 233 assertions. The wrapper used an isolated herdr and cleaned up processes left by the test step.
  • bun run check fast: not green. Generated types/themes, typecheck and production build passed. Workflow syntax was skipped on macOS. The unit lane reported failures in Codex store, session history, shell/CI harness, bridge and other unchanged tests. server/usage-login-private.test.ts hung past its test timeout. The run was stopped after ten minutes and has no final unit-suite result. Upstream main's commit description already records the same private sign-in hang and several of these failure categories.
  • Tested with Bun 1.4.2, Node 25.2.1 and herdr 0.9.5 (local build). CI uses Node 22 and herdr 0.9.3.
  • Full integration/browser lanes, native Windows and iOS checks were not run. No HTTP/WS contract, dependency or stored-format changes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Large prompts now finish sending correctly when a connection accepts data in partial chunks, avoiding truncated requests and timeouts.
    • Failures after a request begins sending are no longer marked safe to retry, reducing the risk of duplicate submissions.

herdrRpc now resumes partial or zero-byte socket writes until it sends the complete request frame. It checks the guard before writing begins and does not retry the request after a connected-write failure.

Nitpick Make the large-frame test observe a partial client write.

49-49: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Quick win

Make the large-frame test observe a partial client write.

The chunks.length > 1 assertion counts peer data events. The reader determines that count, not the client's socket.write calls. A complete client write can still arrive as several peer chunks. In that case the test passes without running the drain continuation in writeRequest. The result, lines, and connections assertions also pass when the first write is complete.

Pausing the peer alone is not enough. The client sends the remaining bytes only from drain. A peer that never resumes causes the 2000 ms timeout.

Pause the peer before it attaches its data listener. This lets the kernel buffers fill, so a 2 MiB frame can be accepted partially. Record the return values of the client's socket.write, for example by wrapping the socket that Bun.connect returns. The repository already spies on Bun.connect in server/herdr/seam.test.ts. After a partial write is recorded, resume the peer. Then assert that at least one recorded return value is smaller than the frame length, and that the complete frame still arrives. Replace the chunks.length check with this assertion. If every recorded return equals the frame length, the test should fail.

…when it lapses

A large request goes out over several drains. The guard was asked only before the first byte, so a sender that lost its lease mid-request still had its text typed once the rest was written. It is now asked before every write: before the first byte a revoked sender cancels; mid-request the connection ends with the frame cut short (no newline, nothing herdr can act on) and the call rejects as socket_error. The large-frame tests now hold the peer until the first write and assert more than one write; a new test revokes after the first partial write.

Thanks @odfalik, good catch on Bun's unbuffered write; the real-socket tests made it easy to verify. Merge-pass review (omo and Codex Terra xhigh) traced every consumer of the error codes: no automatic double-send, and moving connected failures to socket_error is the conservative side for prompt answers and pending input. One gap, which omo reproduced and Terra rated HIGH: the guard was asked only before the first byte, so a sender that lost its lease (a take-over, a switch to view-only) while a large paste was mid-request still had the rest written, and herdr typed it. On main that frame never completed.

I pushed one commit on top of your branch (no force):

  • The guard is asked before every write. Before the first byte a revoked sender still gets cancelled; mid-request the connection ends with the frame cut short (no newline, nothing herdr can act on) and the call rejects as socket_error, the uncertain outcome callers already handle without resending. The doc comment says so.
  • Tests: the large-frame cases now hold the peer's reads until the first write, so that write can only be partial, and assert the guard was asked more than once (more than one write). A new test revokes after the first partial write and checks the peer got part of one request, no newline, one connection, and socket_error.

All five tests pass; the three that cover these paths fail on 5b114f2. bun run check fast passes.

Thanks, that's a real gap and the right call: a sender that lost its lease shouldn't get the rest of a paste typed. Cutting the frame short with socket_error keeps it uncertain without letting herdr act on it, and the revocation test covers it well. Looks good to me.

Thanks @odfalik for finding this and for the real-socket tests. herdrRpc used Bun's unbuffered socket.write as if it buffered: a large request (a big paste) was cut after the bytes the socket accepted, herdr never got the newline, and the call timed out. The request is now kept as one UTF-8 buffer and its remainder written on drain, never replayed or resent on a new connection; failures after connecting are socket_error, so a prompt answer is no longer treated as safe to retry when bytes may have gone out.

Merge-pass review: omo (approve) and Codex Terra xhigh traced every consumer of the error codes: no automatic double-send; pending input treats socket_error as uncertain and does not resend; prompt answers end the asking. The merge pass added one commit: the send guard is asked before every write, not only the first. A sender that loses its lease mid-request (take-over, view-only) now has the connection ended with the frame cut short (no newline: herdr's reader acts only on complete lines, and returns nothing on EOF) and gets socket_error, instead of the rest being written and typed. The large-frame tests now hold the peer until the first write so that write is partial, and a new test covers the revocation mid-request; they fail without the change.

Left as is (LOW): a synchronous connected failure on the Windows mirror now ends the mirror rather than retrying (asynchronous socket_error already did); a request proven to fail before its first byte (serialization) is reported as uncertain; Windows named-pipe drain behaviour was not exercised locally (Native Windows CI covers the client).

CodeRabbit's check shows skipping on this head; the merge pass and both reviewers reviewed it.
