What it does for the user

Selecting text inside one of the agent's chat replies now offers Quote in message, the same action the terminal lens already has for its own selection. It adds From your reply: and the selected text, fenced so no backtick run inside can close the fence, to that pane's message box after what is already written there, then focuses the box. Nothing is sent: the draft stays ordinary editable text until the user presses Send, with Send's usual checks.

  • The action is a pill in a row of its own over the message box (.composer-quote-row), in the stack's flow. It never floats over the transcript, so it covers no selected word, and the browser's own selection handles and copy menu keep their place.
  • On touch, a tap that clears the selection on its way down still quotes the text. The selected rows stay pinned in the chat's virtual list until the press clicks, is cancelled or lifts elsewhere. The pressed pill keeps full opacity, so the text under it does not show through.
  • Refused: a selection that reaches a user message, a work block, the copy row, a field or another pane; a quote that would push the draft past the 20 000-character limit (the draft is left untouched, and the existing "Too long for the message draft" note appears); and a connection that only watches, which has no composer.
  • No new strings, endpoint, WS frame or setting. The composer gains no permanent button; the pill appears only while a reply selection exists.

Design precedent

This follows Claude's reported quote-into-reply behaviour (anthropics/claude-code#55772): a selection in an answer offers a quote that goes into the message box as editable text, and nothing is sent until the user does. Inside Ovis it reuses the terminal lens's existing Quote in message action and wording. It is a quote only, not #511's comment workflow, which stays a separate design decision. DESIGN.md names the same precedent.

Why

Asking a follow-up about a specific part of a long answer meant copying it and pasting it by hand. The terminal lens already had a quote action; the chat lens, where most replies are read, did not.

Notes

This branch was cut about 180 commits behind main and rebased onto current main (i18n, hooks and shared-type splits). One rebase bug surfaced in review and is fixed here: main renamed localStorage keys from herdr-web-ui: to ovis:, so the quote must write ovis:composer-draft:…, the key the composer reads (c23d972a1).

How it was verified

  • bun test src/lib/terminalQuote.test.ts src/lib/composerDraft.test.ts scripts/ci-browser.test.ts: covers the reply format, nested fences, the exact limit, and preserving a newer draft edit from another tab.
  • bun run check fast passes.
  • New scripts/reply-quote-demo-regression.ts, enrolled in the browser lane, runs the unmodified app over the demo fixture transport. It records every frame the client sends: none before Send, exactly one ordinary submit carrying the edited draft, and no replay after a reconnect. It also checks the refusals (cross-message, work-only, empty and watching selections), that a full draft is left unchanged, that a held touch press keeps the row pinned until its click or cancel, and that the pressed pill stays opaque. With UI_EVIDENCE_DIR set it captures the states at phone and desktop widths.
  • Adjacent regressions: pane-paging-demo-regression, chat-selection-copy-regression and chat-virtual-browser-qa.
  • Reviewed by a code-review agent and by Codex. Both HIGH findings, the stale draft key and a held-press assertion that could never pass, are fixed in this branch. Two waits in the regression that raced the virtual list's re-measuring under load are made to settle (bf50cf64d, 9dacc1b80).
  • Looked at the captures at 1440 px and 390 px, light and dark: the pill sits right-aligned on its own row over the message box and covers no transcript text; on a phone it is a 44 px target, and the pressed pill stays opaque.

This PR touches no HTTP/WS contract, authentication, --takeover, queued-input or workflow code.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Select text within an assistant reply and add it to the current pane’s message draft as a formatted quote. The quote remains editable and is sent only when you press Send.
    • Quoting preserves selections during touch interactions and keeps an unsent quote in the draft if the connection drops and reconnects.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Quotes are not added when the selection extends beyond a single reply, the connection is in observe mode, or the draft would exceed its character limit. An over-limit attempt displays a notice.

The change adds a Quote in message action for selected text within one assistant reply. It appends formatted text to the pane’s editable draft without sending it. It also adds selection handling, draft-limit checks, and regression coverage for desktop and phone behavior.

Changes: Reply quoting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect and retain reply selections
src/components/ChatView.tsx, src/components/ChatView.css, src/components/ChatTimeline.tsx, scripts/pane-paging-demo-regression.ts
ChatView reports selected text only when the selection is within one assistant reply. ChatTimeline can retain the selection during a quote action. Paging selectors now measure the reply Markdown.
Format quotes and update the draft
src/lib/terminalQuote.ts, src/lib/composerDraft.ts, src/components/PaneTerminal.tsx, src/components/PaneTerminal.css, src/lib/terminalQuote.test.ts, src/lib/composerDraft.test.ts
The quote action formats and appends selected text to the pane draft within the character limit. On success, it clears the selection and focuses the composer. If the quote exceeds the limit, it leaves the draft unchanged and shows a notice.
Validate and describe reply quoting
scripts/reply-quote-demo-regression.ts, scripts/ci-browser.sh, DESIGN.md, changelog.d/reply-selection-quote.md
The browser regression checks quoting, sending, refusal conditions, reconnection, and phone interactions. CI runs the regression script. The design and changelog describe the feature.

Merge pass review-work for 0772e11: REVIEW FAILED, but only on the PR description. The code and tests pass.

Blocker: the PR body doesn't name the design precedent. src/AGENTS.md:6-10 asks a UI change to name its design precedent in both the PR and DESIGN.md. DESIGN.md:1649-1665 names Claude's quote-into-reply behaviour (anthropics/claude-code#55772), but the PR body names only Ovis's own terminal action. Please add the Claude precedent to the description. No code change is needed.

Checked and passing:

  • Tests: 34 unit tests pass, and the typecheck passes. reply-quote-demo-regression passes all 9 checks. The merge pass reran pane-paging-demo-regression, which exits 0.
  • Fence: it is always one longer than the longest backtick run in the selection. A mutant that makes it one shorter is caught.
  • Length limit: a quote that would push the draft past 20 000 characters is refused, never truncated.
  • Nothing sent: the regression records every frame. None goes out while quoting, editing, refusing or reconnecting, and exactly one submit goes out on Send.
  • Draft: the quote goes to the ovis:composer-draft: key and keeps another tab's newer stored draft.
  • Gate probes: a selection spanning two replies, the copy row or a field is refused. RTL and emoji text are kept exactly. The composer takes focus. Observe mode refuses the quote, and the draft survives a reconnect.

Non-blocking:

  • On a 390 × 380 viewport with the keyboard open, the quote notice briefly pushes the bottom 20 px of Send below the viewport until the notice clears.
  • The terminal lens's own quote path (PaneTerminal.tsx:998-1001) still appends by hand instead of calling composerDrafts.appendQuote. This predates the PR.
  • A right or middle press on the pill keeps the hold until the next click.

Thanks. The description now has a Design precedent section naming Claude's quote-into-reply behaviour (anthropics/claude-code#55772), the same precedent as the DESIGN.md entry, and saying it is a quote only, not #511's comment workflow. No code change was needed.

The non-blocking notes stay out of this PR. The terminal-lens quote path predates it, and the 390x380 keyboard-open notice and the right/middle-press hold are minor follow-ups.

Merge pass: one rebase needed. #1874 is merged on main. scripts/ci-browser.test.ts no longer pins the browser lane's count; it checks the scripts on disk. This branch still edits the old toHaveLength(…) line, so it now conflicts with main. Rebase onto main and drop this PR's change to scripts/ci-browser.test.ts, keeping its run_script line in scripts/ci-browser.sh. The new test checks that line automatically. This is the last rebase a lane count will cause. The merge pass checks that the rebase changed only that file, then re-queues the PR. A rebase needs no new CodeRabbit review.

Rebased onto main after #1874 and pushed 2d4c485 (was 0772e11). I dropped this PR's change to scripts/ci-browser.test.ts and kept its run_script line in scripts/ci-browser.sh. Apart from that file, the branch's patch is identical to before (git patch-id matches). scripts/ci-browser.test.ts passes 7/7, and bun run check fast passed before the push. This is a rebase only, so it doesn't need another CodeRabbit review.

Rebased onto main after #1831, #1890, #1895 and #1897, and pushed af24092 (was 2d4c485). Two commits conflicted in ChatView's props, both additively: main's new localSend and navigation stay, and this PR's onReplySelection, then holdReplySelection = false, are added after them. Nothing else changed. bun run check fast passed before the push. This is a rebase only, so it doesn't need another CodeRabbit review.

Merge pass: #1837 merged (1a456c1), and both PRs add a prop to the ChatView signature, so this PR now conflicts with main in src/components/ChatView.tsx and src/components/PaneTerminal.tsx. Please rebase onto main and keep both props. The merge pass rechecks only the rebase delta and requeues it.

devswha and others added 7 commits October 25, 2026 06:08
A selection wholly inside one assistant reply's answer in the chat lens now
offers Quote in message, the same banner action the terminal lens has for its
own selection. It appends "From your reply:" and the selected text, as a copy
would carry it, in a fence longer than any backtick run inside, to that pane's
ordinary composer draft after what is already there, then focuses the message
box. Nothing is sent: Send stays the one explicit action, with its existing
checks.

- ChatView wraps a reply's answer parts in a display: contents .chat-reply
marker and reports a selection that starts and ends in the same reply; one
that reaches a user message, a work block, the copy row, a field or another
pane is not offered. The page-scroll line-height probe and the paging
regression follow the answer's new parent.
- PaneTerminal offers the action only to a connection that may type, captures
the pane's draft key with the text, and holds the captured text through a
press so a tap that clears the selection on its way down still quotes it.
- ComposerDraftStore.appendQuote reads the draft's newest text (another tab's
edit included) and refuses the whole quote, leaving the draft untouched,
when it would pass the 20 000-character limit; the existing "Too long for
the message draft" note says so. No new strings, endpoint, frame or setting.

Checked with bun test of terminalQuote and composerDraft (new cases for the
reply format, nested fences, the exact limit and newer draft edits), the new
scripts/reply-quote-demo-regression.ts on the demo client (enrolled in the
browser lane), which records every sent frame and finds none before Send,
exactly one ordinary submit carrying the edited draft, refusals for cross
message, work-only, empty and watching selections, an unchanged full draft,
and no replay after a reconnect; plus chat-selection-copy, pane-paging,
chat-virtual and chat browser regressions, typecheck and the conventions
tests.
On a touch screen every pressed button dims to 0.55 opacity (styles.css).
The reply quote action floats over the transcript, so the dimmed button
let the words under it show through while a finger held it. It now keeps
its opacity whole and fills with the hover colour instead, as styles.css
asks of controls that show their own press.

The reply-quote demo regression asserts the computed opacity of the pressed
action is 1 in its capture pass and records it with the other measurements.
The reply quote action floated at the top right of the pane, over the
transcript, where it could cover the words just selected. It is now a pill
button in a row of the composer's own (.composer-quote-row), in the stack's
flow, so it covers no word of the chat wherever the selection sits.

A press that clears the selection on its way down (a phone's tap) now also
keeps the selected rows pinned in the chat's virtual list until the press
clicks, is cancelled or lifts elsewhere, so the quoted text stays the text
the reader chose. The demo regression covers the new placement and the hold.
Main renamed the composer's storage keys from herdr-web-ui: to ovis:, so a
reply quote written under the old key never reached the message box. The
quote now uses the key the composer reads, and the demo regression seeds
its settings and view under the new keys.
The list may keep a row mounted after it stops being pinned, so waiting for
the last reply to leave the DOM never ended. The app's promise is the pin,
and that is what the held-press pass now checks after the click or cancel.
…easures

The virtual list re-measures rows after a scroll, and near the end of the
transcript the selection cannot reach the top, so one scroll then a wait
timed out. The helper now corrects the scroll on each poll and accepts the
furthest the transcript scrolls.
The capture pass scrolled the selection into view once and waited; the
virtual list re-measured rows after it and a phone set timed out. It now
scrolls it in again on each poll until it stays in view.

Rebased onto main after #1837 and pushed fd07c54 (was af24092). Both props are kept, and every conflict was additive:

  • ChatViewProps declares feat(chat): read tool-file labels from the pane's folder #1837's cwd and then this PR's onReplySelection, followed by its selectedReplyText helper.
  • The ChatView parameter list is main's (including cwd = null) plus onReplySelection and holdReplySelection = false.
  • PaneTerminal passes cwd={cwd} and onReplySelection={onReplySelection} to the same <ChatView>.

Nothing else changed. bun run check fast passed before the push. This is a rebase only, so it doesn't need another CodeRabbit review.

Merge pass review-work report. Overall: PASSED.

Lane Verdict Confidence
QA (code-review agent's matrix + the merge pass's own pane-paging run; artifacts kept) PASS -
Code review (omo-native-code-reviewer, programming + remove-ai-slops) PASS -
Gate round 1 REJECT: the PR body didn't name the design precedent (src/AGENTS.md:6-10) HIGH
Gate round 2 (same head, precedent added to the body) APPROVE HIGH

QA

  • 34 unit tests pass, and the typecheck passes.
  • reply-quote-demo-regression passes 9/9. The merge pass reran pane-paging-demo-regression: exit 0.
  • A mutant that makes the fence one shorter is caught.

Behaviour checked

  • Fence: it is always one longer than the longest backtick run, so the quoted text can't close it.
  • Size limit: a quote that would push the draft past 20 000 characters is refused, never truncated.
  • Nothing sent: the regression records every frame. None goes out while quoting, editing, refusing or reconnecting, and exactly one submit goes out on Send.
  • Draft key: the draft is ovis:composer-draft:, and the quote keeps another tab's newer stored draft.
  • Gate probes: selections across two replies, the copy row or a field are refused. RTL and emoji text are kept exactly. Observe mode refuses, and the draft survives a reconnect.
  • Precedent: Claude's quote-into-reply ([FEATURE] VSCode extension: Quote affordance on assistant messages (parity with Claude.ai web and Claude Code on Windows) anthropics/claude-code#55772), now named in the PR body and in DESIGN.md.

Follow-ups (MINOR)

  • On a 390 × 380 viewport with the keyboard open, the quote notice briefly pushes Send 20 px below the viewport.
  • The terminal lens's own quote path still appends by hand. That predates this PR.
  • A right or middle press on the pill keeps the hold until the next click.

All required checks are green, and no review thread is open.

## Change

Selecting text in one of the agent's chat replies drew a **Quote in
message** row over the message box (#1845). That row joined the composer
stack, so the chat moved under the reader's selection. The maintainer
asked for the feature to be removed. Measured on the demo, on main at
a1e4f8b:

| width | chat scroller height | selected reply's position |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1440 | −44 px | unchanged |
| 390 (phone) | −84 px | moved 52 px (scrollTop +52) |

This PR removes the whole chat-reply feature:

- `.composer-quote-row` / `.chat-quote` (PaneTerminal.css) and the row,
its press hold and its pointerup listener (PaneTerminal.tsx)
- the reply selection tracking and the `.chat-reply` wrapper in
ChatView. The page-key line step goes back to `.chat-turn-agent >
.markdown`, in ChatView and in `pane-paging-demo-regression.ts`.
- ChatTimeline's `holdSelection` row pinning
- `formatReplyQuote`, `REPLY_QUOTE_LABEL` and
`ComposerDraftStore.appendQuote`, with the tests only they needed
- `scripts/reply-quote-demo-regression.ts` and its browser-lane line,
the DESIGN.md entry, and the Added fragment

The terminal lens keeps its own **Quote in message** (#951) as it was
before #1845. #1845 changed only one thing on that path: it moved the
fence into a shared `fenceFor` helper, which is now back inline in
`formatTerminalQuote`. The terminal still uses its three strings (Quote
in message, Added to the message draft, Too long for the message draft),
so they stay translated. Files that no later commit touched are restored
to their pre-#1845 state; ChatView, PaneTerminal, DESIGN.md and
ci-browser.sh were edited by hand, so later work in them is kept.

No new design. Chat selection goes back to the plain browser selection
and copy that DESIGN.md already describes (the Claude/ChatGPT
distinction between selecting text and copying an answer).

Changelog: users never got #1845 (`git tag --contains 314200a` is
empty). As in #1572, its unreleased Added fragment is deleted and no
Removed entry is added.

## Validation

- `bun run check fast` (through `dori heavy`): workflow syntax,
generated types and themes, typecheck, build, and unit tests (6714 pass)
all ok.
- No-movement QA on the demo build at 1440 (a real mouse drag) and at
390 phone emulation (a selection range, as a long press leaves it),
sampling 40 animation frames after the selection. On this branch the
reply's position, the scroller's height and scrollTop, and the message
box's position all stay put (deltas 0), no quote row is drawn, and the
selection stays. The same script on main shows the movement in the table
above.
- Terminal lens: `checkTerminalCopyOff`
(terminal-copy-off-regression.ts, which drags in the terminal and waits
for its Quote in message button) passes on an isolated test herdr.
`terminalQuote.test.ts` passes.
- Adjacent regressions: `pane-paging-demo-regression.ts`,
`chat-selection-copy-regression.ts` and `chat-virtual-browser-qa.ts`
pass. `scripts/ci-browser.test.ts` passes.
- Reviewed by Codex (gpt-6.1-sol, xhigh): no findings, APPROVE.

… the next message (#511)

Selecting text inside one agent reply offers a floating Comment action drawn
over the chat, so a selection in progress moves nothing (the #1845 row shook
the chat, #1922). A small form saves the comment; saved comments wait per pane
on this device as one chip over the input card. The next message carries them
first, in the order written, each as `> quote` lines and the comment, then the
typed text. A slash command or an answer to the agent's question leaves them
waiting.

A message with comments goes to an agent alone: submit takes an optional
`agent_only` (feature "agent-only"). The bridge refuses it with agent_not_ready,
typing nothing, where no agent is in front; a queued or held one keeps it, and a
saved copy's resend says so again. A client never sends it to an older bridge,
which would ignore the flag. The demo transport answers the same way.

## What it does for the user

Reviewing a plan or a spec point by point in Chat no longer means

is why #1922 removed it). With a mouse it stands where the button was
released; on a touch screen it stands under the selection, clear of the
handles and the system's own menu.
- Comment opens a small form (the quote, a field, Cancel and Save;
Mod+Enter saves, Escape closes it while empty). On a phone it docks over
the message box.
- Saved comments wait per pane on this device as **one chip** over the
input card: "2 comments on the reply". A tap lists them, each with its
own X; the chip's X removes them all. Nothing is added to Settings and
nothing is drawn inside the reply.
- The next message sends them first, in the order written, each as `>
quote` lines and then the comment, a blank line between them, and then
what was typed. A message may be comments alone:

  ```text
  > backfill it from updated_at
  Backfill in batches of 1,000, the table has 40 million rows.
  > replay the local edit on top of it
  If both sides changed the same field, ask instead of replaying.
  Go ahead with step 1.
  ```

- A slash command, a `!` shell line or an answer to the agent's question
goes without them; the chip turns dashed and says "2 comments waiting".

## Comments only ever go to an agent

A shell would run `> quote` as a redirect and truncate that file. A
message carrying comments is sent with a new optional `agent_only: true`
on `submit` (feature `agent-only` in the snapshot):

- The bridge refuses it with `agent_not_ready`, typing nothing, when no
agent is in front of the pane: at once, when queued or held, and when
`agent.prompt` answers `agent_not_found`/`agent_not_ready` mid-send (it
is never typed raw instead).
- A queued or held message keeps the rule (`PendingMessage.agent_only`);
a saved copy's resend keeps it from the bridge's own record even when
the copy lost it.
- Edit on such a queued message puts its text back as an agent-only
draft, sent with `agent_only` until the box is emptied.
- The browser never sends it to an older bridge, which would ignore the
flag (`agent_only_unsupported`, counted as nothing typed).
- The demo transport answers the same way.

This changes an HTTP/WS contract and the input path, so it waits for a
real review.

## Design precedent

The gesture follows ChatGPT's selection action (a floating button over
selected answer text that quotes it into the input). Collecting several
remarks and sending them in one turn follows a code review's pending
comments, as #511 proposes, so the agent is interrupted once rather than
once per remark. It differs from both in collecting several quotes in
one compact chip. The DESIGN.md entry names this.

## How it was verified

- `server/submit.contract.test.ts` (real herdr test session): five new
cases. A message only an agent may take is refused in a shell pane and
typed nothing; it reaches an agent pane as any other; queued and held
into a shell are refused; `agent.prompt` answering `agent_not_found`
refuses instead of typing raw; `agent_only` other than `true`, or on a
terminal line, is `invalid_delivery`. The shell and agent-left cases
fail on the code before the fix (the message was typed, `ok: true`) and
pass after it. The whole file: 98 pass, 0 fail.
- Unit: `src/lib/replyComments.test.ts` (message format, quote lines,
what waits, the store), `src/lib/composerDraftAgentOnly.test.ts` (the
Edit mark, its move with the draft), `server/pending-input.test.ts` (the
record's flag).
- New `scripts/reply-comments-demo-regression.ts`, enrolled in the
browser lane, on the unmodified app over the demo transport, at 1280
with a mouse and 390 on a touch screen, dark and light, Codex palette.
It checks that a selection reaching a user message offers nothing; that
the chat scroller's height, `scrollTop` and the composer's place do not
change while a selection is made and offered; that Comment stands clear
below the selection; and the chip counts. A `/compact` goes alone with
no `agent_only`, and the comments wait. The next message sends exactly
the quoted comments then the typed text, with `agent_only: true`, and
the chip and storage clear.
- `bun run check fast` passes on the head, rebased on the 0.4.20 release
commit (8601 unit tests).
- Screenshots (1280 and 390, dark and light, Codex palette) were looked
at for each state.

## Reviews

- omo-native-code-reviewer and Codex Sol 6.1 Fast xhigh, adversarial and
read-only. Round 1 blocked on two HIGHs, both fixed with tests that
failed before: (1) Edit on a queued comment message restored it as an
ordinary draft; (2) `agent.prompt` answering `agent_not_found` fell
through to raw typing. Also fixed: the bridge trusting the saved copy's
flag on resend, `agent_only_unsupported` read as maybe-typed, and the
refusal note's Clear it and send / Send anyway disabled for a
comments-only message.
- Round 2: omo PASS (all five fixed, no new CRITICAL/HIGH/MEDIUM). Codex
found three more, fixed with tests that fail before: (HIGH) storage
refusing the Edit's agent-only mark left an ordinary draft, now held in
the page too; (MEDIUM) a Chat timeline chunk arriving after the action
mounted left Comment dead, it now listens on the document; (MEDIUM)
moving a pane to another workspace lost its waiting comments, now
carried with the draft.
- Round 3 (Codex, new code only): the three confirmed fixed; one MEDIUM,
a pane moved while a message with comments was on its way sent them
twice, fixed (they stay with that send, as its draft does) with a test
that fails before. That last 7-line fix was not reviewed again; `bun run
check fast` passes on it.

## Known limits (LOW)

- Text put back from Recover unsent text carries no agent-only mark (the
user picks that visible text themselves).
- The agent-only mark Edit sets clears only when the box is emptied;
overwritten text keeps it, which fails safe (refused where no agent
runs).
- A triple-click that ends in the reply's copy row offers no Comment;
the Comment pill is not reachable from the keyboard.
- Comments of a pane whose herdr was replaced are dropped with its state
rather than offered in recovery.
- A message starting with `!` leaves the comments waiting (meant for
Claude's bash mode); the chip says so.
- A pane moved while its message with comments is on its way leaves any
comment written meanwhile under the old ID.
- A native Windows pane refuses a message with comments ("no agent is
running", the draft and comments stay): herdr names only the pane's
shell there, and Windows has no foreground process group, so Ovis cannot
tell which program takes the pane's input.
- A message for an agent alone whose Enter was refused after its paste
stays uncertain with the note "the message is in the terminal's input
line"; the pane's later queued messages wait behind it until the user
copies or discards it.
- The file-viewer comments from the issue's follow-up are not part of
this PR.
