Problem

Review bots on combsmith/.github-private#2370 (the PR that mirrored this runbook into seed-repo-template.sh) raised valid findings about the runbook text itself, deferred to combsmith/.github-private#2047 because they can only be fixed here, upstream. This PR fixes them:

# File / step Defect Fix
1 BOOTSTRAP.md step 6 sonar-project.properties example has trailing # comments after values; Java properties parsing keeps them as part of the value Explanations moved above the block; example lines are bare
2 BOOTSTRAP.md step 7.4 instruction-file loop hard-codes for lang in python shell case "$STACK" derives the list (frontend→typescript javascript, backend-go→go, backend-python→python, infra-terraform→terraform, fullstack→typescript javascript go terraform, backend-rust/none→none) and appends shell when the repo has *.sh; table added
3 BOOTSTRAP.md step 8 git rm tests/*.bats contradicts the STACK=none exception that keeps some ci-*.bats Guards (*-stub.bats, gitignore-baseline.bats, pr-quality-ruleset.bats) removed unconditionally; git rm tests/ci-*.bats is a separate command gated by the exception
4 BOOTSTRAP.md step 7 check ! grep -q … passes when a listed file is missing (grep exit 2) rc captured and branched: 1 = pass, 0 = placeholder survives, other = error, exit loudly
5 BOOTSTRAP.md step 2 no mention that fullstack.yml lacks a pip entry Paragraph added: fullstack-with-Python copies the pip block from backend-python.yml (verified against combsmith/.github standards/dependabot/)
6 AGENTS.md brew install bats-core shellcheck yq then requires Homebrew bash bash added to the install list
7 AGENTS.md shellcheck *.sh fails on the unmatched glob (no .sh ships) find-based form: find . -path ./.git -prune -o -name '*.sh' -exec shellcheck {} +

Risk

Low. Documentation only; no workflow, stub or test file changes. The heredocs in .github-private are <<'EOF'-quoted and neither file gains a bare EOF line, so the mirror remains mechanical. Until the follow-up seeder PR lands, the next seed run would propose reverting these three files (known, tracked in combsmith/.github-private#2047).

Test plan

  • PATH=/opt/homebrew/bin:$PATH bats tests/ (bash 5.3): 137 pass, 8 fail in dependabot-github-actions-ecosystem.bats setup with yq is required but not installed — pre-existing local-env gap, unrelated to this diff; CI has yq.
  • Step 7.4 case block executed for all seven STACK values with and without a *.sh present: produces the documented lists, shell appended only when scripts exist.
  • Step 7 check executed against template files (exit 1, FAIL), a clean file (exit 0, OK) and a missing file (exit 2, ERROR).
  • Step 8 globs enumerate all 20 tests/*.bats (18 guards + ci files, with ci-*.bats separable).
  • AGENTS.md lint line runs clean on this repo (no .sh files, exit 0).
  • CI green on build-and-test, Secret scan (gitleaks), coverage, SonarCloud.

Rollback

git revert of the single commit. No external state.

Monitoring

After merge: re-mirror into combsmith/.github-private scripts/seed-repo-template.sh (heredocs, tests/fixtures/seed-repo-template/*.md, REPO_TEMPLATE_*_BLOB pins) so DRY_RUN=true bash scripts/seed-repo-template.sh --repo combsmith/repo-template reports SKIP for README.md, BOOTSTRAP.md and AGENTS.md. Closes the upstream half of combsmith/.github-private#2047.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

View guided diff Turn on auto-fix

…2370

BOOTSTRAP.md
- step 2: note that fullstack.yml has no pip entry; a fullstack repo with
Python adds the pip block from backend-python.yml
- step 6: drop trailing `# comments` from the sonar-project.properties
example (Java properties keep them as part of the value); explain the
  values above the block instead
- step 7.4: derive the instruction-file language list from STACK via a
case block (plus shell when the repo has *.sh) instead of hard-coding
  `python shell`
- step 7 check: branch on grep's exit code so a missing listed file
(exit 2) fails loudly instead of passing as "no match"
- step 8: split the `git rm` so the STACK=none ci-*.bats exception is
expressible; template guards are always removed

AGENTS.md
- add `bash` to the brew install list (Homebrew bash 5 is required)
- replace `shellcheck *.sh` with a find-based form that does not fail on
  the unmatched glob

Follow-up for combsmith/.github-private#2047: re-mirror these three files
into scripts/seed-repo-template.sh heredocs and the blob-pinned fixtures.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated local development instructions for macOS, including the required GNU Bash 5 installation.
    • Improved shell-script validation guidance to work reliably across repositories, including those without shell scripts.
    • Clarified bootstrap requirements for full-stack Python projects and Dependabot.
    • Added more precise guidance for selecting language instructions and validating required files.
    • Expanded instructions for removing template-only Bats tests while preserving support for shell and Bats repositories.

Updated local setup guidance and the bootstrap runbook. The changes cover Bash and ShellCheck commands, Dependabot and Sonar configuration, stack-dependent instruction-file selection, placeholder validation outcomes, and targeted Bats test removal.

Changes: Repository setup guidance

Layer / File(s) Summary
Local shell tooling guidance
AGENTS.md
The installation command includes bash. The ShellCheck command finds .sh files outside .git.
Bootstrap configuration requirements
BOOTSTRAP.md
The runbook documents a Python pip Dependabot entry for fullstack configurations with Python code, retains exactly one GitHub Actions entry, and describes Sonar properties without inline comments.
Bootstrap instruction selection and cleanup
BOOTSTRAP.md
Instruction-file selection now uses STACK-specific language sets, includes shell instructions when scripts exist, and rejects unknown stack values. Placeholder validation distinguishes no matches, template text, and missing or unreadable files. Bats test removal targets template guard tests and non-shell CI tests while preserving individual CI Bats tests for shell-based none repositories.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a154c

This PR changes only the setup and bootstrap documentation. Two runbook snippets can still choose the wrong instruction files in specific cases: fullstack repositories with Python code, and repositories with many shell scripts. The template copy must also be mirrored in the seeder so a later regeneration does not revert it. These issues are low-risk and quick to fix before or shortly after merge.

Validation results (local, bash 5.3.20 via Homebrew):

$ PATH=/opt/homebrew/bin:$PATH bats tests/
1..145
ok 1..59, 68..145 (137 tests)
not ok 60..67 dependabot-github-actions-ecosystem.bats setup: "yq is required but not installed"

The 8 failures are the local-environment yq gap (tests fail in setup before any assertion) and are unrelated to this diff; CI installs yq.

Runbook snippets exercised:

Snippet Inputs Result
step 7.4 case "$STACK" all 7 stacks, no *.sh lists match the table; backend-rust/none → empty
step 7.4 with x.sh present frontend, backend-go shell appended
step 7 placeholder check template README.md + sonar-project.properties FAIL, exit 1
step 7 placeholder check clean file OK, exit 0
step 7 placeholder check clean file + missing file ERROR: grep exited 2 — a listed file is missing or unreadable, exit 2
step 8 globs tests/ 18 guard files + 2 remaining ci-*.bats… all 20 *.bats covered
AGENTS.md lint line this repo (no .sh) exit 0 (bare shellcheck *.sh exits 1 on the glob)

Neither file contains a bare EOF line, so the <<'EOF' heredocs in .github-private seed-repo-template.sh can take the new text verbatim.

… find -quit

Addresses CodeRabbit review on #255: a fullstack repo that adds the pip
Dependabot block (step 2) also needs python.instructions.md, and
`find … -print | grep -q` under pipefail can lose the match to SIGPIPE,
so stop find after the first hit with `-print -quit`.

Validation results, round 2 (after e9f52a9 — CodeRabbit fixes to step 7.4):

$ PATH=/opt/homebrew/bin:$PATH bats tests/
1..145 → 137 ok; 8 not ok = dependabot-github-actions-ecosystem.bats setup ("yq is required but not installed"), local env only

Step 7.4 snippet re-exercised with the revised logic:

Dir contents STACK langs exit
empty fullstack typescript javascript go terraform 0
empty backend-go go 0
a.py + b.sh fullstack typescript javascript go terraform shell python 0
a.py + b.sh backend-go go shell 0
any bogus unknown STACK: bogus 1

All three CodeRabbit threads replied to and resolved (seeder mirror = follow-up PR in .github-private, already prepared locally and passing tests/test_seed_repo_template.bats against this branch's content).

…tests/

Addresses the Codex review on #255: the explicit glob list missed
tests/dependabot-github-actions-ecosystem.bats and
tests/pr-auto-review-concurrency.bats. Delete every tests/*.bats except
ci-*.bats with find, so the STACK=none exception stays expressible and
nothing is left behind.

Validation results, round 3 (after c3d597c — Codex finding on step 8):

Correction to my first comment: the explicit step-8 glob list covered 18 of the 20 tests/*.bats files, not 20; dependabot-github-actions-ecosystem.bats and pr-auto-review-concurrency.bats were missed (Codex caught it). Step 8 now uses find tests -maxdepth 1 -name '*.bats' ! -name 'ci-*.bats' -exec git rm {} +.

Check Result
find … ! -name 'ci-*.bats' on this repo 13 files (all non-ci- guards)
tests/ci-*.bats 7 files; 13 + 7 = 20 = every tests/*.bats
git rm via that find in a scratch clone of tests/ only the 7 ci-*.bats remain
PATH=/opt/homebrew/bin:$PATH bats tests/ 137 ok; 8 not ok = yq missing locally (dependabot-github-actions-ecosystem.bats setup)

All review threads (3 CodeRabbit, 3 Codex) replied to and resolved.

P2 Badge Propagate each instruction download failure

When a stack selects multiple languages, a failed nonfinal gh api pipeline makes that iteration nonzero but does not stop the loop because only pipefail, not errexit, is enabled; if a later download succeeds, the entire block returns 0 and leaves the earlier instruction file empty. Bash's help for confirms that the loop returns “the status of the last command executed,” so each iteration needs an explicit failure exit or the failures must be accumulated and checked after the loop.

…repo-template.sh heredocs (#2374)

combsmith/repo-template#255 (main e648a2eb) fixed the runbook defects that
review bots raised on #2370 and that were deferred to #2047: sonar example
without trailing comments, STACK-derived instruction-file language list,
step-8 deletion set matching the STACK=none exception, placeholder grep that
fails loudly on a missing file, fullstack-without-pip note, and the AGENTS.md
brew list and lint line.

Re-mirror so the next seed does not propose reverting them:
- scripts/seed-repo-template.sh: BOOTSTRAP.md and AGENTS.md heredoc bodies
  regenerated byte-for-byte from repo-template main e648a2eb (README.md
heredoc unchanged; that file did not change).
- tests/fixtures/seed-repo-template/repo-template-{BOOTSTRAP,AGENTS}.md
refreshed (trailing newline stripped, as the seeder writes them).
- tests/test_seed_repo_template.bats: REPO_TEMPLATE_BOOTSTRAP_BLOB and
  REPO_TEMPLATE_AGENTS_BLOB repinned; commit reference 68eb6a18 (#252) ->
  e648a2eb (#255).

Refs #2047.
