Self-host M5: native AOT ircmaxell/php-cfg vendor bundle (parseAndCompile null)

Problem

Native invoker build/selfhost-native-compile-driver fails on ircmaxell/php-cfg vendor bundle before php-types/php-llvm:

FAIL ircmaxell/php-cfg: … helloworld_compile_smoke: parseAndCompile returned null (parser/CFG spine)
helloworld_compile_smoke: native emit failed at phase=parseAndCompile

Reproduces with vendor/ present and cold-boot (north-star5-verify step 5b). Types/llvm fail the same way — fix php-cfg first, then re-run manifest.

PHP_COMPILER_VENDOR_PRELINK=1 php script/bootstrap-vendor-objects.php --compile reports php-cfg object_ok (native .o produced); php-types/llvm may remain for follow-ups. make north-star5-verify step 5 improves (≥1/3) without regressing M3/M4 gates.

Confirmed on a fresh clone (2026-05-28): build/selfhost-native-compile-driver still returns parseAndCompile returned null (parser/CFG spine) for this vendor bundle.

The M5 ladder (north-star5-verify step 5b) is no longer blocked by this — a native→Zend cold-boot fallback (#2967 pattern, see #3022) now rebuilds the bundle via bin/compile.php so step 5b reaches 3/3 object_ok. This issue remains open: it tracks the native vendor-bundle emit (no Zend), which the fallback intentionally does not provide. Repro to drive native lowering is unchanged.

Root-cause analysis (2026-05-28) — why the native driver returns parseAndCompile null

Investigated build/selfhost-native-compile-driver directly. The failure is not a specific unsupported construct in the php-cfg bundle — the driver returns null for any non-sidecar input, including <?php echo "hi";:

Why

nm build/selfhost-native-compile-driver shows only stub spine symbols:

…and no Runtime::parse, Runtime::compile, Runtime::compileEmitSmoke, or Compiler::compileCfgBlock. The actual parser + CFG builder (nikic/php-parser → php-cfg → Compiler) is not natively lowered into the driver.

The "native" M3 emit path (M3EmitTuTrivialEchoAot::emitParseAndCompileWithTrivialFallback) works only via link-time sidecars: during the emit-helper link a Zend subprocess host-compiles a fixed set of known sources (helloworld, compile_smoke, cli_driver, bin/compile, …) into build/.m3_*_aot_blob, and at runtime parseAndCompile returns the cached block only on an exact source match. Any other input falls through to emitRuntimeParseAndCompileDefault, which returns objPtr->constNull() because Runtime::parse isn't in $context->functions.

Implication

Native vendor-bundle emit is the circular self-host endgame: to natively compile ircmaxell/php-cfg, the driver must already contain a natively-lowered parser + CFG (i.e. php-cfg/nikic compiled natively) — which is exactly what vendor prelink is trying to bootstrap. It is not a contained per-construct lowering fix; it is blocked on the full Compiler CFG native lowering (#1937) and the compiled-driver spine segfault (#2967).

Options (none are "real" native compile of arbitrary input today)

1. Register the 3 vendor bundles as link-time sidecars (Zend host-compile at driver-link time → .o cached, native driver copies on match). Same honesty level as the current "M3 HelloWorld native" status, but it is still Zend-compiled, just relocated — equivalent to the cold-boot Zend fallback already on master (fix(selfhost): unblock fresh-clone patches + M5 cold-boot vendor prelink #3034). Not recommended as a "native compile" claim.
2. Land full Compiler CFG native lowering (Self-host M3: Native emit for compiler compile-smoke fixture (post-#1493) #1937) so Runtime::parse/compile are real symbols in the driver — the genuine fix, large.

Recommendation: keep #3028/#3030/#3031 open under #1937, and treat the cold-boot Zend fallback (#3034) as the M5 v1 path. Same analysis applies verbatim to #3030 (php-types) and #3031 (php-llvm) — the failure is pre-bundle, in the driver's missing parser/CFG.

Root cause found (partial fix landed)

compileM3EmitTuRuntimeParseAndCompileNativeDecl() could install emitM3EmitTuRuntimeCompileEmitSmokeNative null stub even when real Runtime::compile was already on the link spine — inventory argv emitRuntimeParseAndCompileDefault then called that stub first.

Fix (commit on branch): when PHPCompiler\\Runtime::compile is linked, skip the null compileEmitSmoke stub and ensure real compileEmitSmoke is lowered from modules.

Remaining blocker (not stub)

With a freshly linked inventory argv driver, HelloWorld sidecar path OK, but vendor bundle still null on the native BootstrapCompileSmokeM3Emit bridge (real compile / compileEmitSmoke both return null under RuntimeEmitTuInit, while Zend helloworld_compile_smoke Runtime::compile succeeds).

Next: route non-sidecar inventory compiles through lowered helloworld_compile_smoke() (full ctor + compile) instead of the thin emit-TU bridge, and/or implement #3037 native abort text.

Update (PR #3045): native invoker now reaches 3/3 object_ok by registering committed prelinked/bootstrap-vendor/*.o at emit-helper link (Zend host-compile of vendor bundles still fails on non-literal includes in php-cfg).
