feat: move the app home from ~/.superset to ~/.paradev (SUPER-2985) - #9158
Stacked on #9157. Moves the app's per-machine home from ~/.superset to ~/.paradev at boot and drops every other mention of ~/.superset from the code (Linear SUPER-2985). Also bundles pdev 0.2.5.
The boot step (@superset/agent-setup/legacy-home-move, the only code that still names .superset)
Desktop main (app-environment.ts), host-service (serve.ts) and the CLI (commands/middleware.ts) run it before anything touches the home. When the process uses the default home and ~/.superset is still a real directory, it:
stops host-services running from ~/.superset, by the pid in each host/<org>/manifest.json, and only when that pid's command line is a host-service (a manifest outlives a crash or reboot, so its pid may now be another program). They cache worktree paths, watch them and write host.db. The pty daemon keeps running: its socket is in the temp dir keyed by org, so the next host-service adopts it and open terminals survive;
carries pdev's files already in ~/.paradev (agent/) into the old directory, refusing on a name clash;
renames ~/.superset to ~/.paradev and leaves a ~/.superset symlink. The symlink covers older CLI and host-service builds and absolute paths inside worktrees (venvs, caches) that we cannot rewrite;
records the move in legacy-home-move.json and links Claude Code's session folders under the worktrees' new paths, so /resume and --continue keep their history. Claude keys sessions by real path (measured). This covers every Claude config dir: ~/.claude, CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR entries and per-account dirs under home or ~/.config, touching only dirs whose projects/ holds old worktree entries.
Then host-service and the desktop rewrite the absolute paths in host.db and local.db (a no-op once applied) and run git worktree repair, so git and the DB agree. If a step fails, that run keeps using ~/.superset and the next boot tries again. If two processes race (desktop and CLI), the loser adopts the winner's move; if something recreates ~/.superset before the symlink lands, the move is kept. A custom SUPERSET_HOME_DIR (dev builds) is left alone, and the step never runs under a test runner.
Also
The resolver is SUPERSET_HOME_DIR, else ~/.paradev. The env var keeps its name: installed agent hook configs call $SUPERSET_HOME_DIR/hooks/notify.sh (renaming it is SUPER-2988).
New projects default to ~/.paradev/projects. The agent wrappers skip ~/.paradev/bin as well as ~/.superset/bin when finding the real binary, so terminals opened before the move cannot recurse.
Golden-box cleanup strips both ~/.paradev/host and ~/.superset/host while boxes roll over.
The CLI's tests now load the root test preload, which isolates the home. A shell-ready-evidence test that wrote into the real home is gone.
pdev 0.2.5 (ParadevAI/router add electron installation fix documentation #16, plan mode exp #17) keeps everything in ~/.paradev/agent and leaves the rest of ~/.paradev to the app. The bump also brings 0.2.3 (cloud mode behind PDEV_REMOTE_*, router stream retry). The pdev asset is uploaded to the sandbox CDN.
End to end on a scratch HOME with the real code under Electron's Node (better-sqlite3 is built for it): a git repo with a worktree under ~/.superset, a host.db from createDb, a live fake host-service, pdev files and a Claude session folder. After the step: moved, symlink in place, fake host stopped, pdev files kept, host.db rewritten, git worktree list shows the new path and git status works there, Claude folder linked, second run does nothing.
In the dev desktop app, booted with HOME pointed at a scratch folder holding a copy of this worktree's dev data as ~/.superset, pdev files in ~/.paradev/agent, a git worktree under ~/.superset/worktrees, a host.db row for it and a Claude session folder (dev URL scheme kept; the pty-daemon socket kept in a scratch run dir so it never met the real daemon):
first boot logged Moved the app home, left ~/.superset -> .paradev, opened local.db and all five orgs' host.db under ~/.paradev; the host.db row and git worktree list showed the new path, the Claude folder was linked, pdev's file was kept;
signed in, created a project (default parent ~/.paradev/projects) and a worktree workspace from the composer; the worktree landed in ~/.paradev/worktrees/... and its terminal ran there with SUPERSET_HOME_DIR=~/.paradev and ~/.paradev/bin first on PATH;
second boot did nothing, reopened the workspace, and the terminal session came back after the restart.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
The app now uses ~/.paradev as its default home and migrates existing data from ~/.superset, updating saved project and worktree references. A compatibility link is created when possible.
Claude project sessions are linked to their corresponding locations after migration.
New projects and worktrees now default to locations under ~/.paradev.
Updates
The bundled pdev version is updated to 0.2.5, with support for macOS and Linux on arm64 and x64.

- Line 85: Update the move’s catch path around the legacy existence check to

- Line 212: Update the legacy-home database rewrite around `prefix` to normalize

Walkthrough
The default app home changes from .superset to .paradev. The change adds migration and stored-path repair helpers, invokes them from desktop, CLI, and host-service startup paths, updates path references across the repository, and updates the bundled pdev release.
Changes: App home migration
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Default home and migration helpers packages/agent-setup/src/paths.ts, packages/agent-setup/src/legacy-home-move.ts, packages/agent-setup/src/claude-project-links.ts, apps/desktop/src/main/lib/app-environment.ts, packages/agent-setup/src/*test.ts, packages/agent-setup/package.json, packages/host-service/src/terminal-agents/harness-sessions/*
The default home changes to .paradev. New helpers migrate the legacy home, record the move, rewrite paths, repair Git worktrees, and link Claude project directories.
Desktop and host-service code apply stored-path rewrites and repair affected Git worktrees. Desktop, CLI, and host-service startup code invokes the migration helper.
.paradev paths across app and tooling .superset/lib/*, apps/desktop/scripts/*, apps/desktop/src/*, packages/agent-setup/src/*, packages/auth/src/*, packages/cli/*, packages/host-service/*, packages/trpc/src/*, scripts/*
Default project, worktree, token, and other app-home references change to .paradev. Related tests and documentation are updated; the sandbox identity list also retains the legacy host path.
The migration can repeatedly stop a running host service without completing the move, and it is incomplete on Windows. Fix the check ordering and validate the compatibility link. The Windows separator and symlink gaps are worth addressing before merge.

### Issue 1
packages/agent-setup/src/legacy-home-move.ts:109-115
`stopHostServices` treats a live PID from an old `manifest.json` as proof that it belongs to a host-service. If that PID was reused after a reboot or crash, the migration sends an unrelated editor, shell, or job `SIGTERM`, then `SIGKILL` if it survives. This can lose unsaved work. Check that the process still belongs to the recorded host before sending either signal.
### Issue 2
packages/agent-setup/src/legacy-home-move.ts:55-57
Desktop startup and CLI commands can enter `moveHome` together without a shared lock. After one process renames the old home, the other can fail and select `~/.superset`. If it recreates and populates that directory before the first creates the compatibility link, both link creation and rollback can fail. The app then uses new state while the existing data remains in `~/.paradev`.
Serialize the move across processes and recheck both directories after acquiring the lock.
### Issue 3
packages/agent-setup/src/legacy-home-move.ts:88
The move only links Claude history in `~/.claude`. Selected Claude accounts use their own `CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR` and keep separate history there. After the move, their worktrees have new real paths, but their old project folders get no matching links. Their `/resume` and `--continue` history stops appearing in the moved workspace.
Run the linking step for configured Claude account directories as well as the default directory.
### Issue 4
packages/host-service/src/runtime/legacy-home-paths/legacy-home-paths.ts:37
Once the database paths are rewritten, later starts return here without trying Git repair again. If repair fails or the process exits before it finishes, Git keeps reporting the old paths indefinitely. The desktop database caller has the same gate. The compatibility link keeps those paths usable, but the intended repair stays unfinished.
Track repair completion separately, or retry repair independently of whether the database update changed rows.

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.
Summary
Moves the default app home from ~/.superset to ~/.paradev, preserves the old path with a link, and rewrites stored paths.
Startup moves the default app home and keeps old paths working.
The app’s default files, projects, and agent tools use ~/.paradev.
Desktop and sandbox bundles now include pdev 0.2.5.
Sandbox rollover cleanup removes host data from both home paths.
CLI tests use an isolated home, and isolation checks cover both home names.

Keep setup on the legacy home until migration succeeds.
If workspace setup runs before the first migrated app boot, this helper selects .paradev while the existing allocations and databases remain in .superset. Setup skips the database and token seeds and creates a second port-allocations.json. The migration then rejects the duplicate entry, and allocation can reuse ports already assigned to another workspace. Select the legacy home while it remains a real directory, or migrate before setup accesses it. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Guard the move-record write so a late failure does not crash boot.
At this point the rename and the symlink have already succeeded. Every earlier failure path returns "failed", and the doc comment says a failure keeps the process on ~/.superset. This writeFileSync is not guarded. If it throws (for example ENOSPC or EACCES), the exception escapes moveLegacyAppHome. That crashes desktop main, host-servicemain(), and the CLI middleware import.
The next boot sees a symlink and returns "nothing-to-move". No record exists, so the database paths are never rewritten. Log the error and still return "moved".

Validate the manifest PID before signaling it.
isAlive only confirms that the PID exists. A stale manifest.json whose PID was reused can therefore cause stopHostServices to send SIGTERM and SIGKILL to an unrelated process. Validate the process identity before signaling it. The daemon manifest records startedAt; use it when this reader consumes that manifest. If the process start time cannot be compared safely, check the process command line first.

Extend isDefaultAppHomeDir to cover the legacy ~/.superset path.
The default home is now ~/.paradev. path.resolve does not follow symlinks, so SUPERSET_HOME_DIR=~/.superset now returns false. That value is still inherited by existing desktop terminal sessions and older launchers. In that state, assertIsolatedDaemonNamespaceInTests in packages/host-service/src/daemon/manifest.ts no longer refuses. A test then reaches the real app home through the ~/.superset symlink, or through the real directory if the move has not run yet.
Treat the legacy path as a default home too. Export the legacy directory name from paths.ts so legacy-home-move.ts can reuse it without a circular import.

Reject the legacy home in the test guard.
After migration, ~/.superset is a symlink to ~/.paradev, but isDefaultAppHomeDir compares paths lexically. A test that sets SUPERSET_HOME_DIR to the legacy path passes this guard and can read or modify the live daemon namespace. Reject both paths and their filesystem aliases before accessing manifests. Update the test guard using isDefaultAppHomeDir to reject both the default and

Fix the failing lint/style/noRestrictedImports check on execFileSync.
CI / Lint fails on this import. The repository bans synchronous subprocesses because they block the serving event loop.
isHostService calls execFileSync only from moveLegacyAppHome, which is a synchronous boot step. It must finish before anything opens the app home. An async rewrite would change the contract of the moveLegacyAppHome callers in desktop main, host-servicemain(), and the CLI middleware.
Keep the synchronous call and add a scoped biome-ignore with the reason. Confirm that no request-serving loop is active when this runs. If one can be active, make the move step async instead.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Use a Windows-capable host-service identity check.
On Windows, the ps command is not available by default. isHostService catches that failure and returns false, so stopHostServices can move host.db while a manifest-listed host service still uses it. Use a Windows-capable process inspection method before allowing that rename. The desktop configuration includes a Windows installer. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Check destination conflicts before stopping host services.
If ~/.paradev contains a name also present in ~/.superset, Line 63 returns "failed" after stopHostServices has terminated the active host service. The conflict persists, so each later startup can terminate that service again without moving the home. Check for conflicts before stopping services, then recheck before the rename. Add a Windows junction fallback for the home migration.
When Windows denies the directory symlink, moveHome can roll back and return "failed" on each startup, leaving the app on ~/.superset. Try a junction with an absolute target before rolling back.

Validate the compatibility link before recording the move.
Concurrent desktop and CLI startups can race while one process moves carried entries. A process that retains legacyHomeDir can recreate that path in the gap before the symlink is created. The catch accepts any existing path, so it can record "moved" even when legacy is a real directory. Older builds and unrevised paths then resolve to that directory, not the moved files.

Normalize Windows paths before matching and filtering worktrees.
The home paths use native Windows separators, but the SQL prefix and both caller filters use /. Descendant rows can remain under the legacy path, and the callers can skip Git repair. Normalize separators for the SQL comparison and resolve both paths before each worktree filter. The compatibility symlink may keep old paths usable, but it does not complete the database rewrite.

Every process that owns the app home (desktop main, host-service, the
CLI) runs one boot step before anything touches it. When it uses the
default home and ~/.superset is still a real directory, it:
- stops the host-services running from ~/.superset (they cache
worktree paths, watch them and write host.db). The pty daemon keeps
running: its socket is keyed by org, so the next host-service adopts
it and open terminals survive;
- carries pdev's files already in ~/.paradev into the old directory,
refusing on a name clash;
- renames ~/.superset to ~/.paradev and leaves a ~/.superset symlink,
which covers older CLI and host-service builds and paths inside
worktrees (venvs, caches) that we cannot rewrite;
- records the move, links Claude Code's session folders under the
worktrees' new paths so /resume and --continue keep their history.
host-service and the desktop then rewrite the absolute paths in host.db
and local.db and run `git worktree repair`, so git and the DB agree.
If a step fails, that run keeps using ~/.superset and the next boot
tries again. The step never runs under a test runner, and the CLI's
tests now load the root preload, which isolates the home.
Nothing else knows the old name: the resolver is SUPERSET_HOME_DIR,
else ~/.paradev. The env var keeps its name because installed agent
hook configs call $SUPERSET_HOME_DIR/hooks/notify.sh. New projects
default to ~/.paradev/projects. pdev owns only ~/.paradev/agent (pdev
0.2.5, bundled in the next commit).
Golden-box cleanup strips both host dirs while boxes roll over.
Also drops a shell-ready-evidence test that wrote into the real home.
pdev 0.2.5 keeps everything in ~/.paradev/agent and leaves the rest of
~/.paradev to the app. Also brings 0.2.3: cloud mode behind
PDEV_REMOTE_* and the router stream retry.
