Summary

Chat v3 composer work:

  1. Composer height cap - a long draft no longer pushes the send button out of the pane.
  2. Keyboard - / and ⌘J focus the composer, ⌘U attaches a file, ↑/↓ recall sent prompts, ⌘/Ctrl+Enter sends and steers, ⇧Tab moves into the queue.
  3. Server-side steer - a prompt sent with steer: { expectedTurnId } is steered by the host in the same command that queues it.
  4. Attachments reach the agent - attached files go to the worktree's .superset/attachments and travel as <attachment path="…" type="…" /> tags in the message text, so every harness can read them. The UI parses the tags: images as thumbnails, other files as name badges.

Why / Context

  • A long draft grew the editor past the pane and clipped the send button.
  • There was no keyboard path to the composer, to past prompts, or to steering.
  • The Claude and Codex harnesses never sent attachments to the agent: claudeAdapter turned one into [name], codexAdapter dropped it. Only ACP resolved them.

How It Works

Composer (packages/chat-ui)

  • .prompt-input-editor gets max-height: 40vh; overflow-y: auto.
  • utils/historyNavigation registers ↑/↓ on the Lexical editor. ↑ recalls when the box is empty or the caret is at the very start; after that it walks history while the recalled text is unedited. Past the newest, ↓ restores the draft as EditorState, so chips survive. Once a recalled prompt is edited, the arrows stop navigating so the edit is kept.
  • The submit payload gains steer: boolean (⌘/Ctrl+Enter); IME composition never submits.

Steering (packages/chat, packages/chat-runtime)

  • promptInputSchema gains optional steer: { expectedTurnId }. LiveSession.prompt steers the queued item when the running turn still has that id; otherwise it only queues.
  • The outbox entry carries the flag, so a retry sends it again. The desktop passes the running turn id and has no client-side steer logic.

Desktop chat

  • FOCUS_CHAT_INPUT and CHAT_ADD_ATTACHMENT were registered but unhandled; the active pane's composer now handles them through useHotkey. / stays a plain listener (a registry entry holds one binding per platform) with the same IME/AltGr guards.
  • ⇧Tab from the editor focuses the newest queued row: ↑/↓ move, Enter steers, ⌫ removes, E edits, Esc returns.
  • History comes from the timeline (utils/promptHistory, bookkeeping blocks and attachment tags removed) inside useStableList, so the memoised Composer does not re-render on every item.
  • Attachments: uploadPastedFiles (moved from TerminalPane to usePaneRegistry/utils) writes the files; utils/attachmentTags formats and parses the tags; thumbnails load through filesystem.readFile, capped at 5 MB, falling back to a name badge.

Keyboard Shortcuts

Shortcut Action
/ Focus the composer (active pane, focus not in a field)
⌘J / Ctrl+Shift+J Focus the composer (rebindable)
⌘U / Ctrl+Shift+U Attach a file (rebindable)
↑ / ↓ Recall previous / next sent prompt
⌘/Ctrl + Enter Send and steer (sends normally when idle)
⇧Tab, then ↑ ↓ Enter ⌫ E Esc Queue: move, steer, remove, edit, back

Manual QA Checklist

Verified in the dev app over CDP:

  • 60-line draft: editor 401px (40% of the window), send button inside the pane
  • Pasted PNG + "What color is this image?": file in .superset/attachments, thumbnail shown without the raw tag, claude-code agent ran Read .superset/attachments/red-square.png and answered "Red"
  • ⌘J from the page body focuses the composer
  • ↑ then ↓ restores a draft that starts with a /autoplan chip
  • (walkthrough page) / focus, ⇧Tab + ↑ + Esc, ⌘Enter steer order, history recall, layout of images and file badges

Still to check:

  • ⌘Enter with the server-side steer in a live turn
  • Enter, ⌫, E on a focused queue row
  • / with two chat panes, and inside a terminal
  • Height cap in a short split pane; light theme

Testing

  • packages/chat: 42 pass. packages/chat-runtime: 181 pass, including two new LiveSession tests (steer for the running turn interrupts it and runs next; steer for another turn only queues).
  • packages/chat-ui: 4 pass (new historyNavigation tests, headless Lexical). The package had no tests before; it now has a test script and excludes tests from tsc, like packages/chat.
  • apps/desktop (usePaneRegistry): 232 pass, including attachmentTags, promptHistory, uploadPastedFiles.
  • tsc --noEmit for chat, chat-runtime, chat-ui: clean. apps/desktop typecheck: no errors in changed files.
  • bun run lint on changed files: clean. sherif: clean.

Design Decisions

  • Steer on the host: the client-side "send, wait for the echo, then steer" needed three guards and still had a race between the check and the action.
  • Attachments as text tags: one plain path works for every harness with no adapter changes, and the files live in the workspace where agents already read.
  • ⇧Tab into the queue: ⌘↑/⌘↓ is the macOS jump-to-start/end shortcut. ⇧Tab was the brainstorm-page pick and keeps roving focus for screen readers.
  • Assistant text colour unchanged: an earlier commit set it to full foreground; it is reverted here and left to settle with Avi (feat(chat): smooth streaming, one live line, and one-line rows in the ACP chat #8163).

Known Limitations

  • Thumbnails crop to a square and cannot be enlarged yet.
  • A recalled slash command such as /review opens the command menu, so the next ↑ moves in that menu.
  • The 40vh cap is window-based, not pane-based.
  • Attachments stay in the worktree until it is deleted (gitignored).
  • steerInputSchema in the protocol is still unused.

Compatibility

  • prompt input gains an optional steer. Older clients never send it, so behaviour is unchanged. An older host strips the unknown key (non-strict zod object) and queues the message without steering.
  • No host-service procedure was added or changed. Older messages with structured attachment parts still render as name badges.

Follow-ups

  • Click-to-enlarge for thumbnails

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Navigate previous prompts with the Up and Down arrow keys, with drafts restored when returning to the editor.
    • Steer a running chat turn with a new prompt using the keyboard.
    • Navigate, edit, remove, and select queued prompts with keyboard shortcuts.
    • Attachments appear in chat messages as image previews or file labels.
    • Focus the prompt editor and manage attachments with keyboard shortcuts when the chat pane is active.
  • Improvements
    • The prompt editor scrolls when its content exceeds the available height.

- Cap the editor at 40vh so long text no longer pushes the send button
  out of the pane.
- "/" focuses the composer in the active chat pane.
- Up/Down recall sent messages; Down past the newest restores the draft.
- Cmd/Ctrl+Enter sends and then steers the message once it is queued.
Adds an additive host-service attachments.read query that returns an
image attachment's bytes. User messages render images as square
thumbnails above the text bubble; an older host without the query
falls back to the name badge.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The chat composer now supports prompt history, workspace-backed attachment tags, queued-prompt keyboard controls, and active-pane state. Prompt submissions can carry an expected running-turn ID through the chat protocol and runtime. Transcript rows and previews parse and display tagged attachments.

Changes

Chat composer and session behavior

Composer uploads write files through the workspace filesystem and add formatted attachment tags to submitted text. Transcript rows render parsed images and file badges, and user-message previews omit the tags.
Derive and navigate prompt history
apps/desktop/.../ChatSession/components/SessionView/*, apps/desktop/.../ChatSession/utils/promptHistory/*, packages/chat-ui/src/components/PromptInput/*
Session history is derived from user messages, excluding bookkeeping and blank text and suppressing consecutive repeats. The prompt editor supports Up/Down history navigation and draft restoration.

Prompt submissions can include an expected turn ID. The runtime steers the queued prompt when that ID matches the running turn; otherwise, the prompt remains queued. Tests cover matching and stale IDs.
Control queued prompts and active-pane focus
apps/desktop/.../AgentTerminalPane/*, apps/desktop/.../ChatSession/components/Composer/*, apps/desktop/.../ChatV3Pane/*, apps/desktop/.../usePaneRegistry.tsx
Pane active state reaches chat composers. Queue rows support keyboard navigation, steering, removal, and editing, and focus can move between the editor and the queue.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to a233a

Attachment previews introduce a new automatic file-read path whose filename checks do not prevent symbolic links from resolving outside the workspace. Steering correctly checks the running turn, but interruption and recovery behavior remain incompletely established. No unauthenticated access, cross-tenant compromise, or external data exfiltration was demonstrated.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Transcript rendering now automatically reads paths derived from user-message attachment tags. The parser limits names to direct children of .superset/attachments, but the filesystem reader follows symlinks without enforcing workspace containment. If a lower-trust repository or process supplies a matching symlink and its path appears in a rendered user message, the preview can read a host-accessible file outside the workspace. Ordinary uploader-created files do not demonstrate this condition; external disclosure and attacker control of both prerequisites remain unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The conditional preview escape is bounded by the selected host process's filesystem permissions, not necessarily by the workspace directory. It requires a matching rendered user-message tag and a symlink in its resolution path. Read bytes return to the authenticated renderer; cross-tenant reachability, remote exfiltration, and privilege escalation were not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — No retained verified Security finding was supplied. The supported conditional path is attachment-looking user text to thumbnail rendering to a symlink-following host read. The generic read authority predates the PR, but automatic transcript reachability is new; unchanged backend source does not eliminate that concern.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The read procedure requires host authentication, resolves the workspace ID to a database-backed root, and receives the preview's 5 MB limit. The preview disables retries and falls back to a badge on read, size, or rendering errors. These controls neither bind the file to an upload record nor prevent symlink resolution. Deployment-level caller-to-workspace authorization remains unresolved, rather than an established new authorization defect.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The server-authoritative turn check prevents stale steering requests from interrupting a different running turn. The inspected tests assert this fallback and matching-turn priority. Command deduplication caches successful returns, while production Claude and Codex cancellation blocks handle asynchronous failures; these facts do not prove all retry, concurrent-steering, or recovery invariants.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use an attachment-specific read boundary that verifies file provenance and safely enforces canonical containment under the attachment directory, including symlinked ancestors. Define retention and compensating cleanup for unsuccessful workspace uploads without deleting attachments still referenced by prompts.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 4/5

[Medium risk] Chat composer adds keyboard shortcuts, prompt history, and image display.

Fix the pending steer's turn tracking before merging so a late request cannot cancel the next queued task.

Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/v2-workspace/$workspaceId/hooks/usePaneRegistry/components/ChatSession/components/Composer/hooks/useSteerOnArrival/useSteerOnArrival.ts:22-29
`useSteerOnArrival` remembers whether any turn is running, not which turn the user meant to stop. If turn A ends and an older queued prompt starts turn B before the new prompt's echo arrives, `streaming` stays true. The hook then steers the new prompt and cancels B. The client batches events into one frame, so it can skip the idle state entirely.

Track the original turn ID and clear the pending steer when that turn ends or changes.

### Issue 2
packages/chat-ui/src/components/PromptInput/components/ComposerBody/ComposerBody.tsx:515
History saves the draft with `getTextContent()` and restores it with `insertRawText()`. After an Up/Down round trip, file, plugin, and command chips return as plain text. They lose their labels, click actions, and data, and `mentions` is empty on submit.

Save and restore the editor state for the draft rather than just its text.

### Issue 3
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/v2-workspace/$workspaceId/hooks/usePaneRegistry/components/ChatSession/utils/promptHistory/promptHistory.ts:9-11
`promptHistory` includes every `user_message`, including agent-written context blocks such as `<roster>` and `<task-notification>`. The timeline keeps these items; `UserMessageRow` checks them separately with `readBookkeeping`. Pressing Up can therefore recall an internal block instead of a sent prompt, which the user could accidentally resend.

Pass the harness into `promptHistory` and apply the same `readBookkeeping` filter used by the transcript.

### Issue 4
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/v2-workspace/$workspaceId/hooks/usePaneRegistry/components/ChatV3Pane/ChatV3Pane.tsx:18
The new `/` listener requires `isActive`, but the fresh-chat branch renders `NewSessionView` without passing it. Its `Composer` receives `undefined` and never registers the listener. The shortcut only starts working after the first message creates a session.

Thread `isActive` through `NewSessionView` as well.

### Issue 5
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/v2-workspace/$workspaceId/hooks/usePaneRegistry/components/ChatSession/components/Transcript/components/UserMessageRow/components/AttachmentImage/AttachmentImage.tsx:21-25
`AttachmentImage` falls back to the filename only when the query fails. A valid image type that Chromium cannot display, such as TIFF, gets a successful response from `attachments.read` but then shows a broken thumbnail. Damaged image files take the same path.

Add an `onError` fallback so these attachments keep a readable filename badge.

---

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.

Summary

Adds composer height limits, keyboard focus and prompt recall, send-and-steer, and image thumbnails above user messages. Assistant text now uses full foreground color.

  • Pending steering can cancel the next turn after the original turn ends.
  • History restores chips as plain text and includes agent-written context blocks.
  • New chats miss the focus shortcut, and image-load failures miss the filename fallback.

Intentional or known limitations acknowledged by harshithmullapudi: square cropping, no enlargement, a window-based height cap, and recalled slash commands taking arrow-key focus.

🧹 Preview Cleanup Complete

The following preview resources have been cleaned up:

  • ✅ Neon database branch

Thank you for your contribution! 🎉

- Cmd+Enter steer remembers the turn it targets and drops the steer if
that turn ends or a different one starts, so it cannot cancel the next
  queued task.
- Up/Down keeps the draft as editor state, so chips survive the round
trip; the start/end caret check now handles a leading or trailing chip.
- History skips harness bookkeeping blocks, like the transcript does.
- "/" works in a new chat before the first message.
- An image the browser cannot display falls back to the name badge.

@harshithmullapudi Verified in ComposerBody.tsx, Line 490. The Enter handler returns before submission when event.isComposing is true or event.keyCode === 229. This also blocks Cmd/Ctrl+Enter submission during IME composition. The finding is addressed.

The Claude and Codex harnesses dropped attachment parts, so an image
never reached the agent. The composer now writes attached files into
the worktree's .superset/attachments (the convention terminal pastes
already use) and appends one tag per file to the message text:

  <attachment path=".superset/attachments/shot.png" type="image/png" />

Every harness gets the same plain path and reads the file with its own
tools. The transcript, queue rows, history and rail parse the tags back
out: images show as thumbnails read through filesystem.readFile (capped
at 5 MB), other files as name badges.

Drops the host-service attachments.read query this PR had added, and
moves uploadPastedFiles to usePaneRegistry/utils now that the chat
composer shares it with the terminal.
- registerHistoryNavigation (PromptInput/utils/historyNavigation) holds
the Up/Down logic that lived inline in ComposerBody, with headless
Lexical tests: recall from empty, no recall mid-draft, a chip draft
survives a round trip, and an edit to a recalled prompt is kept.
- Once a recalled prompt is edited, Up/Down no longer navigate, so the
edit is not discarded. Clearing the box resumes navigation.
- chat-ui gets a test script and excludes tests from tsc, like
  packages/chat.
- SessionView wraps the history list in useStableList so a new timeline
item does not re-render the memoised Composer.
FOCUS_CHAT_INPUT (Cmd+J / Ctrl+Shift+J) and CHAT_ADD_ATTACHMENT
(Cmd+U / Ctrl+Shift+U) were registered and listed in Settings but
nothing handled them. The active chat pane's composer now does, through
useHotkey, so both can be rebound. "/" stays a plain listener because a
registry entry holds one binding per platform; it now also skips IME
composition and AltGr like useHotkey does.
…s it

Cmd/Ctrl+Enter used to send the prompt, wait on the client for its queue
echo, then call steerQueuedPrompt: three client-side guards and still a
window where the turn could change between the check and the action.

promptInputSchema gains an optional steer: { expectedTurnId }. When
LiveSession.prompt queues the message and the running turn is still that
id, it steers it in the same step. Otherwise it only queues, as before.

Compatibility: additive optional input. Older clients never send it, so
behaviour is unchanged; an older host strips the unknown key and queues
the message normally. The outbox carries the flag so a retry sends it
again, and the desktop drops useSteerOnArrival and the runningTurnId prop.

Attachment tags are plain message text, so a typed tag could name any
path, and filesystem.readFile does not check worktree containment. The
parser now accepts only a single sanitized file name directly inside
.superset/attachments, the only shape the composer writes. Any other
tag stays in the message as text and is never read.
