Why

The cloud list and sidebar look up a box's PR by cloud_workspaces.branch, the branch the box was created on. Agents move to new branches with one PR each, so every box except the open one showed a stale or missing PR, and only one. Opening the box "fixed" it because only the open box goes through the host fan-out, which knows its live branch.

What

This is part 1 of 2. It records the data; part 2 adds the read and switches desktop and mobile over to it.

  • Table: cloud_workspace_pull_requests (cloud_workspace_id, repository_id, pr_number, linked_at), plus an index on repository_id so a repository delete doesn't scan it. linked_at is when the box linked the PR, not when it was reported. It's append-only, with one row per PR a box has linked. A row survives its branch being deleted or reused. State still comes from github_pull_requests by (repository, number), which webhooks keep current.
  • Box: startSandboxPullRequestReporter runs only in a sandbox.
    • The PR runtime already keeps every PR each workspace has linked (workspace_pull_requests in host.db, append-only). The runtime announces each new link (onPullRequestLinked), and the reporter posts the PRs it hasn't sent yet: everything on boot, then on each link. Nothing polls.
    • It covers every repository checked out on the box, archived workspaces included, and retries a failed send with backoff from 5s up to 5 minutes.
  • API: a new mutation, cloudWorkspace.reportPullRequests({ id, pullRequests }). The box calls it through host-service's API client with its sandbox credential (the one the egress firewall adds), the same way it calls cloudWorkspace.setDescription. It's on SANDBOX_ALLOWED_PROCEDURES.
    • Like setDescription, anyone who can see the workspace may call it, and a box only for itself.
    • It only records PRs on repositories that workspace checked out. A box can't attach another repo's PRs.
    • Repeats change nothing. It sends a cloud_workspaces nudge only when it adds a row.
    • It answers with the repositories it ignored. A repo renamed or transferred after the box linked a PR is reported under its old name and dropped; that's a known limit, noted in the sandbox notes.
  • Notes: docs/cloud-sandbox-mismatches.md gets an entry.

Latency: a PR opened with gh pr create is linked on the PR runtime's next sweep, up to 5 minutes, and reported about a second after it is linked. The "Create PR" button links straight away, because it refreshes the runtime itself.

Migration safety

  • Production sizes: checked on a Neon branch of production: cloud_workspaces is 216 kB with 161 rows, github_repositories is 54 MB with about 155k rows. Neither is in the hot list.
  • No type change; only a new table. The two foreign keys briefly take SHARE ROW EXCLUSIVE on their parents. The new table is empty, so validation is instant.
  • Lock order: nothing writes the child table yet, so there are no in-flight inserts to deadlock against.
  • Timing: rebased onto main again; the migration is now 0162. Applied to a fresh Neon branch of production (at main's 0161) with lock_timeout=5s statement_timeout=60s: it was the only pending migration and took 223ms. The PR's preview Neon branch was deleted so CI recreates it.
  • No rehearsal under load: the migration locks only small tables that no job holds open (rule 4).
  • No tRPC change in this PR: waived on purpose. It adds one new mutation, cloudWorkspace.reportPullRequests; no existing input or output changes.
  • Identifier lengths: the primary key has an explicit name (the generated one was 72 characters). The foreign key names follow the existing pattern; 14 existing constraints already exceed 63 characters.

Verification

  • cloudWorkspace.reportPullRequests tests: it records PRs only for the workspace's own repositories and returns the rest in ignored, and a box can't report for another workspace. Each fails when its check is removed. The first also fails if the procedure is missing from the sandbox allowlist.
  • Reporter test: a PR whose report failed arrives on a retry, and a PR already reported is not sent again. It fails without the retry or without the sent tracking.
  • Lint is clean. Typecheck shows only better-auth typing errors from this workspace's install, none in files this PR touches. CI's Typecheck is the authority.
  • A real box reporting. That needs a host-service release.

Summary by cubic

Records every PR a box links so the cloud list and sidebar no longer show a stale or missing PR when the box moves to a new branch.

  • cloud_workspace_pull_requests stores one append-only row per linked PR (workspace, repository, PR number, linkedAt); the box reports them via tRPC as itself, retrying failed sends with backoff up to 5 minutes.
  • The box reports all unsent PRs on boot and each new link, including from archived workspaces; the API records only PRs for the workspace's own checked-out repositories, clamps a reported linkedAt to now, refuses reports for deleted workspaces, and nudges clients only when a row is added.

The client read that switches desktop and mobile to this table lands in a follow-up.

📝 Walkthrough

Sandbox hosts now report linked pull requests to a cloud-workspace API. The API validates and records eligible repository links in a new database table. The host service polls its pull-request history and retries failed reports.

Changes: Sandbox pull request reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Report storage and persistence
packages/db/src/schema/schema.ts, packages/db/drizzle/0162_cloud_workspace_pull_requests.sql, packages/db/drizzle/meta/*, packages/trpc/src/lib/sandbox/*
A new table stores workspace, repository, pull-request number, and link timestamp, with cascading references and a repository index. The reporting function authenticates the workspace, matches checked-out repositories, skips duplicate inserts, and returns unmatched repository names.
Reporting API endpoint
apps/api/src/app/api/cloud-workspaces/[workspaceId]/pull-requests/route.ts
The POST endpoint validates authorization, workspace ID, and pull-request entries. It maps reporting outcomes to HTTP responses and returns ignored repository names on success.
Host collection and reporting
packages/host-service/src/runtime/pull-requests/pull-requests.ts, packages/host-service/src/app.ts, packages/host-service/src/runtime/sandbox-pull-requests/*, packages/host-service/src/serve.ts, docs/cloud-sandbox-mismatches.md
The host service exposes linked pull-request history, including archived workspaces, and reports entries to the API. It polls every 30 seconds after success and increases the wait after failures. Tests cover sending new entries and retry behavior. Documentation describes the reporting flow and ignored repositories.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to f5780

Sandbox hosts now record every pull request a cloud workspace links, keeping original link times and including archived workspaces. Two small items remain. When the same PR was linked from several local workspaces, the stored timestamp can depend on ordering rather than being the earliest. The documented delivery delay also omits retry backoff. Neither blocks merge, and both are easy follow-ups.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 59ebf

Workspace-specific credentials and repository checks constrain reporting authority, while durable deduplication makes retries safe. No concrete cross-workspace security issue was established, but production deployment and rollout verification remain incomplete.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Possession of one workspace’s host credential grants association-writing authority for that workspace’s linked repositories and can trigger its organization’s refresh signal. The inspected path does not grant arbitrary repository selection, another workspace’s credential, or GitHub mutation authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — An authenticated caller chooses PR numbers within eligible repositories. This endpoint records reported associations without checking PR existence or proving branch provenance; its records are not GitHub-verified evidence of an association.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Repository filtering prevents submitted names from selecting unrelated repository IDs. Host-wide aggregation alone does not establish cross-tenant mixing: the inspected initialization intentionally seeds multiple repository-local workspaces for one cloud identity, and documentation says golden snapshots remove host.db and workspace identity. Live deployment isolation remains unverified.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The composite primary key and conflict-ignore insertion make concurrent reporting and retry after interrupted acknowledgement idempotent. Hard deletion of a workspace or repository cascades association cleanup. Realtime delivery is best-effort and separate from durable insertion, so notification loss affects freshness rather than stored ownership.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 3/5

[Critical risk] Adds database table and API endpoint for recording pull requests.

The PR should not merge until historical links survive repository-name changes and the archive-before-poll window.

  3. P2 Repository deletes lack an index ▶
Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
packages/trpc/src/lib/sandbox/pull-requests.ts:63-74
When a checked-out GitHub repository is renamed or transferred, the host can report the old owner/name stored in its PR history. This lookup accepts only the repository's current name, so the API drops the PR but returns success. The reporter then marks it sent, permanently omitting the link from the cloud table.

### Issue 2
packages/host-service/src/app.ts:568-569
If a local workspace is archived after linking a PR but before the next poll, this filter excludes its history from every later read. The PR is never reported, leaving its link absent from the cloud table.

### Issue 3
packages/db/src/schema/schema.ts:1047-1049
This append-only table cascades when a GitHub repository is removed, but its only key starts with `cloud_workspace_id`. As the history grows, finding rows to delete by `repository_id` can require scanning the table, making repository-removal webhooks slower. A repository-leading index would avoid that cost.

Note: If this suggestion doesn't match your team's coding style, reply to this and let me know. I'll remember it for next time!

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.

Summary

The PR adds a cloud table and a sandbox-to-API reporting path for historical workspace PR links; client reads are deferred.

  • The host polls local PR history, and the API authenticates the box and records links for checked-out repositories.
  • Repository-name changes and an archive-before-poll window can leave links unrecorded.

Review verdict: minor issues. (Re-review at bcd6117a, replacing my earlier reviews at dcc565a1 and b6b3280f.) The tRPC mutation and the event-driven reporter work end to end against a migrated Neon branch: a box can't report for another workspace, repeats are no-ops, and link events are coalesced and de-duplicated. Two low issues remain:

  • Low: packages/trpc/src/router/cloud-workspace/pull-requests.ts:20: the linkedAt cap of 8.64e15 is the JS Date limit, but Postgres rejects any date after year 9999 (+010000-…). From 253_402_300_800_000 up to the cap you still get a 500 (reproduced). On the box that blocks every later batch (sandbox-pull-requests.ts:36). Use .max(253_402_300_799_999), or better, reject future values or clamp to now().
  • Low: packages/trpc/src/router/cloud-workspace/record.ts:672: a workspace with status deleted accepts reports (reproduced; the old route returned 404). setDescription shares the gap. Throw NOT_FOUND on deleted.
  • Question: any org member who can see the workspace can record any PR number and linkedAt on it. Will part 2 check these rows against github_pull_requests?

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Deduplicate pull-request records before reporting.

pullRequestRuntime.listLinkedPullRequests() flattens histories from every local workspace. The same repository and number can therefore appear more than once. The API remains idempotent, but the first duplicate record determines linkedAt, making the result depend on workspace/history ordering. Return one record per repository and pull request, keeping the earliest linkedAt.
