What & why

Closes #7623.

The home sidebar's nav is fixed, so any action that isn't built in has to be searched for in the command palette every time. The only escape hatch so far is a dedicated setting per action (#7191 did this for Usage). This makes it general: any command palette action can be pinned to the sidebar, straight from the palette.

  • Pin from the palette. Every command row gets a pin toggle — visible on hover / on the highlighted row, and reachable with Tab + Enter. Pinning doesn't run the command or close the palette, and focus stays in the search input.
  • Pinned actions in the sidebar. They render under the built-in nav in the v2 home sidebar, in both the expanded sidebar and the collapsed rail, using the command's own icon and title.
  • Same behaviour as the palette. Clicking a pinned action does what selecting it in the palette does. Commands that open a sub-palette (Toggle theme, Settings) open the palette on that frame.
  • Unpin with the same toggle in the palette, or from the sidebar button's context menu.

Pins are stored as command ids and resolved against the live palette (findCommandById walks children and honours when), so nested commands like Settings → Appearance work, titles and icons stay current (e.g. Mute/Unmute notifications), and an action that doesn't apply in the current context is absent rather than shown dead.

Notes for review

  • layout.tsx is mostly re-indentation — review with whitespace hidden. The sidebar needs the command context to run commands, so CommandPaletteHost now wraps the dashboard layout (it already accepted children) instead of sitting beside it. Children keep the same element identity, so provider state changes don't re-render the layout.
  • Persisted state policy (apps/desktop/AGENTS.md): pinned-sidebar-commands-v1 is a singleton list of command ids, registered in the persisted-key registry and synced across windows. What bounds it: capped at 8. Who deletes it: unpinning removes the id; the oldest pin falls off at the cap, which also retires ids of commands that no longer exist. When the feature dies: one key to move to DEAD_KEYS.
  • The pin toggle only renders when the v2 sidebar is enabled, since that's the only place pins show up — same gating as the Usage switch.
  • The Show usage tab on sidebar setting is left as is; this PR doesn't touch it.

How I tested it

macOS Electron dev app (setup.local.sh stack), driven over CDP with real mouse/keyboard input against this worktree's renderer:

  • Pinned Usage from the palette with a mouse click: sidebar entry appears immediately, palette stays open, command doesn't run, focus stays in the input.
  • Pinned Toggle theme with Tab + Enter; clicking it in the sidebar opens the palette on the theme frame.
  • Pinned nested Settings → Appearance; clicking it navigates to /settings/appearance.
  • Clicking pinned Usage navigates to /settings/usage.
  • Collapsed rail shows the pinned icon with its tooltip.
  • Unpinned via the sidebar context menu and via the palette toggle.
  • Pins survive a renderer reload.
  • A console.error hook stayed empty across the pin and run-from-sidebar flows (it was not re-installed after the reload step, so the unpin and nested-command checks ran without it).

Automated:

  • bun run lint clean, bun run typecheck 42/42 packages, bun run check:i18n clean.
  • Desktop bun test: 3,958 pass, 0 fail — includes new tests for the pin store (toggle, order, cap) and findCommandById (top-level, static and context-built children, when), plus the persisted-key registry test.
  • packages/i18n tests: 157 pass.

Checklist

  • PR title follows conventional commits (type(scope): subject)
  • bun run lint and bun run typecheck pass (CI fails on lint warnings too)
  • "Allow edits from maintainers" is checked on fork PRs
  • Translated the two new strings across all supported locales

Summary by cubic

Lets you pin any command palette action to the sidebar so you don't have to search for it every time. Closes #7623.

  • Adds a pin toggle to every command row, reachable on hover or with Tab + Enter.
  • Pinned actions appear under the built-in nav in the expanded and collapsed sidebar; clicking them runs the command, including sub-palette frames.
  • Unpin via the palette toggle or the sidebar button's context menu.
  • Pins are stored as a capped list of command ids, synced across windows; commands that don't apply in the current context are hidden.

Written for commit bc82319. Summary will update on new commits.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Pin commands directly from the command palette for quick access.
    • View and run pinned commands from the dashboard sidebar in expanded or collapsed layouts.
    • Pinned commands persist across sessions and synchronize across windows.
    • Up to eight commands can be pinned, with the oldest removed when the limit is reached.
  • Localization

    • Added translated pin and unpin labels across supported languages.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for command lookup and pinned-command behavior.

Every command row in the palette gets a pin toggle (hover, highlighted row,
or Tab + Enter). Pinned commands render in the v2 home sidebar under the
built-in nav, in both the expanded sidebar and the collapsed rail, and can be
unpinned from the palette or the sidebar button's context menu.

Pins are stored as command ids and resolved against the live palette, so
nested commands (Settings > Appearance) work, titles/icons stay current, and a
command that doesn't apply in the current context is simply absent. Commands
that open a sub-palette (Toggle theme, Settings) open the palette on that
frame, matching what selecting them in the palette does.

The sidebar needs the command context, so CommandPaletteHost now wraps the
dashboard layout instead of sitting beside it. Pin state is a capped (8)
localStorage singleton, registered in the persisted-key registry and synced
across windows.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The change adds command pinning from the command palette. Pinned command IDs persist across windows, resolve against active commands, and render in collapsed or expanded dashboard sidebars. Users can pin or unpin commands from the palette or sidebar.

Command pinning

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pinned command state
apps/desktop/src/renderer/stores/pinned-sidebar-commands/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/lib/persisted-keys/persisted-key-registry.test-data.ts
A persisted Zustand store tracks up to eight command IDs. Tests cover toggling, ordering, eviction, and unpinning behavior.
Command resolution and public API
apps/desktop/src/renderer/commandPalette/core/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/commandPalette/index.ts, .../PinnedSidebarCommands/hooks/*
Recursive lookup resolves top-level and nested commands, including context-built children. The hook omits commands that are not active in the current context.
Command palette pin controls
apps/desktop/src/renderer/commandPalette/ui/CommandItemRow/*, packages/i18n/locales/*/messages.po
Command rows show a pin button when enabled. The button updates store state, tracks analytics, preserves search focus, and uses localized pin and unpin labels.
Pinned sidebar commands
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/components/DashboardSidebar/components/DashboardSidebarHeader/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/layout.tsx
Pinned commands render in both sidebar layouts. Leaf commands execute directly; nested or frame-based commands open the command palette. Sidebar unpinning, cross-window store synchronization, and provider scope are wired into the dashboard.

The new sidebar pinning controls have minor German wording and screen-reader announcement issues. They do not block core pinning behavior, but should be corrected before release for a polished accessible UI.

@radix-ui/react-tooltip 1.2.8 source TooltipTrigger aria-describedby TooltipContent role tooltip

💡 Result:

<search_synthesis>
In @radix-ui/react-tooltip (version 1.2.8), the interaction between TooltipTrigger and TooltipContent is managed automatically to maintain accessibility standards [1]. TooltipTrigger Behavior When the tooltip is open, the TooltipTrigger component dynamically updates its aria-describedby attribute to reference the ID of the TooltipContent [1]. This ensures screen readers can associate the trigger with the tooltip&#39;s descriptive content [2]. The implementation is designed to handle existing aria-describedby attributes on the trigger by concatenating the new ID with any previously defined IDs, ensuring existing descriptions are not overwritten [1][3]. TooltipContent Role The TooltipContent component is rendered with role="tooltip" [2]. This informs assistive technologies that the element serves as a tooltip, which provides supplementary information for the trigger element. Key Implementation Details: - The aria-describedby linkage only occurs when the tooltip is in an open state [1]. - The trigger must be a focusable element (such as a button or link) to ensure it can receive the necessary events [4][2]. - Radix UI prioritizes an accessible name (e.g., provided via aria-label) on the trigger itself if you intend for the tooltip to serve as an accessible label rather than a description, as screen readers may otherwise read both the label and the description [5][6][7]. Source evidence confirms these behaviors are hardcoded into the component&#39;s internal logic [1].

It follows that radix tooltip should correctly add it&`#39`;s own id to the trigger even if aria-describedby is already present ### Reproducible example [Demo based on tooltip sample code](https://codesandbox.io/p/sandbox/strange-colden-lrvcgw?layout=%257B%2522sidebarPanel%2522%253A%2522EXPLORER%2522%252C%2522rootPanelGroup%2522%253A%257B%2522direction%2522%253A%2522horizontal%2522%252C%2522contentType%2522%253A%2522UNKNOWN%2522%252C%2522type%2522%253A%2522PANEL_GROUP%2522%252C%2522id%2522%253A%2522ROOT_LAYOUT%2522%252C%2522panels%2522%253A%255B%257B%2522type%2522%253A%2522PANEL_GROUP%2522%252C%2522contentType%2522%253A%2522UNKNOWN%2522%252C%2522direction%2522%253A%2522vertical%2522%252C%2522id%2522%253A%2522clqbj1y2y00072a7u3qmxaef1%2522%252C%2522sizes%2522%253A%255B70%252C30%255D%252C%2522panels%2522%253A%255B%257B%2522type%2522%253A%2522PANEL_GROUP%2522%252C%2522contentType%2522%253A%2522EDITOR%2522%252C%2522direction%2522%253A%2522horizontal%2522%252C%2522id%2522%253A%2522EDITOR%2522%252C%2522panels%2522%253A%255B%257B%2522type%2522%253A%2522PANEL%2522%252C%2522contentType%2522%253A%2522EDITOR%2522%252C%2522id%2522%253A%2522clqbj1y2x00032a7uskeq6eli%2522%257D%255D%257D%252C%257B%2522type%2522%253A%2522PANEL_GROUP%2522%252C%2522contentType%2522%253A%2522SHELLS%2522%252C%2522direction%2522%253A%2522horizontal%2522%252C%2522id%2522%253A%2522SHELLS%2522%252C%2522panels%2522%253A%255B%257B%2522type%2522%253A%2522PANEL%2522%252C%2522contentType%2522%253A%2522SHELLS%2522%252C%2522id%2522%253A%2522clqbj1y2x00042a7ux2oe7miz%2522%257D%255D%252C%2522sizes%2522%253A%255B100%255D%257D%255D%257D%252C%257B%2522type%2522%253A%2522PANEL_GROUP%2522%252C%2522contentType%2522%253A%2522DEVTOOLS%2522%252C%2522direction%2522%253A%2522vertical%2522%252C%2522id%2522%253A%2522DEVTOOLS%2522%252C%2522panels%2522%253A%255B%257B%2522type%2522%253A%2522PANEL%2522%252C%2522contentType%2522%253A%2522DEVTOOLS%2522%252C%2522id%2522%253A%2522clqbj1y2y00062a7u8i0a98ts%2522%257D%255D%252C%2522sizes%2522%253A%255B100%255D%257D%255D%252C%2522sizes%2522%253A%255B50%252C50%255D%257D%252C%2522tabbedPanels%2522%253A%257B%2522clqbj1y2x00032a7uskeq6eli%2522%253A%257B%2522tabs%2522%253A%255B%257B%2522id%2522%253A%2522clqbj1y2x00022a7u45gcndmc%2522%252C%2522mode%2522%253A%2522permanent%2522%252C%2522type%2522%253A%2522FILE%2522%252C%2522filepath%2522%253A%2522%252Fsrc%252Findex.js%2522%252C%2522state%2522%253A%2522IDLE%2522%257D%255D%252C%2522id%2522%253A%2522clqbj1y2x00032a7uskeq6eli%2522%252C%2522activeTabId%2522%253A%2522clqbj1y2x00022a7u45gcndmc%2522%257D%252C%2522clqbj1y2y00062a7u8i0a98ts%2522%253A%257B%2522tabs%2522%253A%255B%257…[truncated] <title>Result 4</title> https://www.radix-ui.com/primitives/docs/guides/composition # Composition Use the `asChild` prop to compose Radix&`#39`;s functionality onto alternative element types or your own React components. All Radix primitive parts that render a DOM element accept an `asChild` prop. When `asChild` is set to `true`, Radix will not render a default DOM element, instead cloning the part&`#39`;s child and passing it the props and behavior required to make it functional. ## Changing the element type In the majority of cases you shouldn’t need to modify the element type as Radix has been designed to provide the most appropriate defaults. However, there are cases where it is helpful to do so. A good example is with `Tooltip.Trigger`. By default this part is rendered as a `button`, though you may want to add a tooltip to a link (`a` tag) as well. Let&`#39`;s see how you can achieve this using `asChild`: ```jsx import * as React from "react"; import { Tooltip } from "radix-ui"; export default () => ( <Tooltip.Root> <Tooltip.Trigger asChild> <a href="https://www.radix-ui.com/">Radix UI</a> </Tooltip.Trigger> <Tooltip.Portal>…</Tooltip.Portal> </Tooltip.Root> ); ``` > If you do decide to change the underlying element type, it is your responsibility to ensure it remains accessible and functional. In the case of `Tooltip.Trigger` for example, it must be a focusable element that can respond to pointer and keyboard events. If you were to switch it to a `div`, it would no longer be accessible. In reality, you will rarely modify the underlying DOM element like we&`#39`;ve seen above. Instead it&`#39`;s more common to use your own React components. This is especially true for most `Trigger` parts, as you usually want to compose the functionality with the custom buttons and links in your design system. ## Composing with your own React components This works exactly the same as above, you pass `asChild` to the part and then wrap your own component with it. However, there are a few gotchas to be aware of. ### Your component must spread props When Radix clones your component, it will pass its own props and event handlers to make it functional and accessible. If your component doesn&`#39`;t support those props, it will break. This is done by spreading all of the props onto the underlying DOM node. ```jsx // before const MyButton = () => <button />; // after const MyButton = (props) => <button {...props} />; ``` We recommend always doing this so that you are not concerned with implementation details (ie. which props/events to accept). We find this is good practice for "leaf" components in general. > Similarly to when changing the element type directly, it is your responsibility to ensure the element type rendered by your custom component remains accessible and functional. ### Your component must forward ref Additionally, Radix will sometimes need to attach a `ref` to your component (for example to measure its size). If your component doesn&`#39`;t accept a `ref`, then it will break. This is done using `React.forwardRef` (read more on react.dev). ```jsx // before const MyButton = (props) => <button {...props} />; // after const MyButton = React.forwardRef((props, forwardedRef) => ( <button {...props} ref={forwardedRef} /> )); ``` Whilst this isn&`#39`;t necessary for all parts, we recommend always doing it so that you are not concerned with implementation details. This is also generally good practice anyway for leaf components. ## Composing multiple primitives `asChild` can be used as deeply as you need to. This means it is a great way to compose multiple primitive&`#39`;s behavior together. Here is an example of how you can compose `Tooltip.Trigger` and `Dialog.Trigger` together with your own button: ```jsx import * as React from "react"; import { Dialog, Tooltip } from "radix-ui"; const MyButton = React.forwardRef((props, forwardedRef) => ( <button {...props} ref={for…[truncated] <title>[Tooltip] aria-describedby not being read by voiceOver · radix-ui/primitives · Discussion `#2037` · GitHub</title> GitHub discussion 2037 in radix-ui/primitives (link omitted to avoid creating a cross-reference) [Tooltip] aria-describedby not being read by voiceOver · radix-ui/primitives · Discussion `#2037` · GitHub / primitives Public Star 18.7k - Pricing - Notifications - Fork 1.1k # [Tooltip] aria-describedby not being read by voiceOver `#2037` Unanswered skarensmoll asked this question in Help [Tooltip] aria-describedby not being read by voiceOver `#2037` Return to top edited ## skarensmoll Mar 21, 2023 Hi there! I&`#39`;m using voiceover on my MacOS with the example provided on the documentation : https://www.radix-ui.com/docs/primitives/components/tooltip I was expecting the voice over would read`Add to library` text because the button is pointing to the Tooltips&`#39`;s content with the`aria-describedby` prop. However this was not the case, not sure why. I know this is intended to be used as additional content that&`#39`;s why I also included an aria-label to the button, and again I was expecting the voice over to read:`this is an example, Add to library` but it didnt happen, I would appreciate some clarity on this. ``` <button aria-label="this is an example" className="IconButton"> <PlusIcon /> </button> ``` Thanks a lot in advance. 2 ## 1 comment ### benoitgrelard Apr 13, 2023 Hey@skarensmoll, The way it is currently implemented, screen readers will announce what is in the content. If you want to announce something different for screen readers to what is visually displayed in the tooltip content, you can pass`aria-label` on`Tooltip.Content`. You can see an example of this here: https://601857eb614bae0021c9b9dd-zgkjtvnouj.chromatic.com/?path=/story/components-tooltip--aria-label 1 0 replies

Avoid repeating the accessible name in the tooltip.

Radix sets aria-describedby on the trigger while the tooltip is open. Because this focusable button already has aria-label={label}, a screen reader can announce the same text as both its name and description when focus opens the tooltip.

Keep aria-label={label}, but remove this duplicate tooltip text or replace it with supplementary information.

Use complete German wording for both sidebar actions.

Both translations omit the required article and are grammatically incomplete in this catalogue context.

  • Change An Seitenleiste anheften to In der Seitenleiste anheften.
  • Change Von Seitenleiste lösen to Aus der Seitenleiste lösen.
