feat(cloud): move sandboxes from Blaxel to Vercel - #7408
Conversation
Sidebar gains a Cloud group holding Environments and Agents; the old Agents page becomes Agent commands. The Agents page lists the agents the sandbox image carries with a Set up button that opens a dialog: subscription sign-in (with a setup-token paste path), API key with an advanced base URL, and a nested custom-provider view (Vercel AI Gateway, Bedrock, manual). Save validates and toasts; the dialog stays open on rejection. State lives in an in-memory store; nothing is persisted or sent anywhere. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Xq77pwTniotXHuqzD5m3Rq
…ud workspaces A person connects their agent once and the workspaces they start run as them. agent_credentials holds one row per user per agent, encrypted at rest with the same sealed envelope the environment secrets use, now shared as secret-box and bound by AAD to the user and agent rather than to an environment row. Saving checks the credential against the provider first, so a typo is caught while the field is still open, and each refusal has its own catalogue key. Provisioning resolves the starter's credential for the agent being launched and appends it to the sandbox env, after the environment's own keys so a personal sign-in wins. Promotion blanks the credential vars, so a golden never carries the promoter's. A subscription is the agent CLI's own long-lived token, so nothing needs refreshing on our side. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Xq77pwTniotXHuqzD5m3Rq
The Agents page and its dialog now read and write the agent_credentials router instead of the renderer-only mock. Saving sends the credential to the server, which checks it against the provider before storing it, so one call both verifies and saves and a refusal keeps the dialog open. Three things the mock could do that a real one cannot. The stored secret is never returned, so the connected view shows the account and drops the reveal toggle. The sign-in button faked an OAuth round trip; the token paste path is the real flow, so the button is gone until we implement it. Custom providers are the gateway only, since a key plus a base URL is what a credential row holds; Bedrock needs several fields and is not wired. The dialog moves next to the page that uses it, and the dead per-agent section it used to live in is deleted. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Xq77pwTniotXHuqzD5m3Rq
Only the subscription card offered a way to disconnect, so a key pasted by mistake could never be taken back out. The API key card gets the same control, which also covers a saved custom provider. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Xq77pwTniotXHuqzD5m3Rq
Three faults in the custom-provider check, found by asking whether a bad key is really refused. The base URL is entered with its version segment already on it and the probe appended another, so every request landed on a doubled path and 404'd. That refused good keys as well as bad ones, with a confusing message. It sent Anthropic's header to an endpoint that speaks the OpenAI convention. Worst of the three: the gateway's model list needs no credential at all and answers 200, so once the path was fixed the check would have accepted every key, valid or not. Gateway credentials now probe the credits endpoint, which authenticates, and the base URL is normalised so a version segment, a trailing slash, or neither all resolve to the same request. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Xq77pwTniotXHuqzD5m3Rq
…atalogs Rebasing onto main moved the migration number and reset the catalogs to main's. The migration is regenerated at the next free number, and the translations for this branch's strings are restored on top of main's. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01XKiU6G6KYav29vnCvkWD45
Review found three real defects, all in what happens after a credential is accepted. A base URL alone was read as "this is a custom provider", so an ordinary Anthropic key pointed at a compatible endpoint came back labelled Vercel AI Gateway. The provider is now stored and returned, and only it decides. A gateway credential with no base URL validated against the gateway and was then handed to the agent with no endpoint at all, which would have sent the key to Anthropic or OpenAI instead. A gateway now always carries its endpoint and must be an API key. A base URL could be http, which would put the credential on the wire in cleartext both when checking it and when injecting it. Only https is accepted. The copy button beside the setup-token command did nothing; it now uses the shared clipboard hook and shows that it copied. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01XKiU6G6KYav29vnCvkWD45
The previous commit rewrote 0111 to include the column. That migration had already been applied on this pull request's database branch, so the rewrite came back as a duplicate type and failed the deploy. A migration that has run anywhere is append-only; 0111 is restored to what was applied and the column arrives in 0112. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01XKiU6G6KYav29vnCvkWD45
The caller chooses the base URL and the server then calls it with the credential attached, so an https check alone let someone aim that probe at loopback, private, link-local or carrier-grade NAT addresses and learn what is reachable from the API. The destination is resolved and refused if any address it answers with sits in one of those ranges, and the probe no longer follows redirects, which would otherwise carry the credential somewhere that was never authorised. Name resolution is advisory rather than pinned, which is why refusing redirects matters as well. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01XKiU6G6KYav29vnCvkWD45
…-blaxel-to-vercel
Blaxel is gone as a provider. Cloud workspaces now run in Vercel Sandbox: custom image on Vercel Container Registry, persistent sandboxes with a session timeout that only the open workspace extends, forks from a stopped golden's snapshot, and the organization's model keys injected at the egress firewall (forks included). A Vercel sandbox's port is a public URL with nothing in front of it, so host-service is now the gate: the API signs a short-lived Ed25519 token bound to one workspace id and the sandbox holds only the public key (SandboxAccessHostAuthProvider replaces the accept-everything EdgeGuardedHostAuthProvider). Clients present it as the same bearer a local host reads, so the preview-token plumbing goes. Folds in the per-user agent sign-in work (cloud-agent-signin): a personal credential rides in the workspace env and suppresses the brokered key for that provider. Migrations: agent_credentials (regenerated after the 0111 collision), provider defaults to vercel, Blaxel-backed rows retired. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01WcGbULcxE9Nw1Y8YVqe3KZ
promote: Vercel's snapshot() ends the source's session and becomes its resume point, so the tidy-up that deleted it left the promoted workspace unable to ever resume (410). Keep the snapshot, start host-service on the source again, and fail a row whose sandbox is gone or unresumable so it gets the failed screen instead of a sidebar entry that never opens. wake: a resumed session boots with no processes and host-service takes a few seconds to listen. Hold the open workspace's address until the host answers (one shared poll per URL), keep a sandbox the last access reported stopped out of the host fan-out, and report `running` on access so the sidebar can tell. The terminal-agent auto-resume then lands on a live host and the agent pane comes back with its scrollback. Also: the release pipeline waits out VCR's image_not_ready, the SDK is a root devDependency for the scripts (as the Blaxel one was), docs record the measured semantics, and the acceptance suite carries its results. 🌐 Web query:
For @vercel/sandbox version 3.2.2, is Sandbox.getOrCreate atomic for concurrent calls with the same name, and what error does Sandbox.create or Sandbox.fork return for a duplicate name?
💡 Result:
In @vercel/sandbox version 3.2.2, Sandbox.getOrCreate is designed to be an idempotent, long-lived sandbox pattern [1][2]. It retrieves an existing sandbox by name if one exists, or creates a new one if it does not [1][3]. While it is intended to handle the "get or create" logic efficiently, it does not explicitly guarantee atomicity for simultaneous concurrent calls with the same name in the sense of a distributed lock preventing race conditions; users should generally rely on the platform's ability to handle name-based resolution [1][4]. Regarding Sandbox.create and Sandbox.fork: 1. Sandbox.create: If you attempt to create a sandbox with a name that is already in use by an existing, non-deleted sandbox in your project, the operation will fail with an error indicating that a sandbox with that name already exists [4][5]. 2. Sandbox.fork: Similarly, if you provide a name for a new fork using the name parameter and that name is already taken by another active sandbox, the operation will return an error [6]. Because sandboxes are identified by a unique name within a project, attempting to create or fork a new entity with a name that is already occupied will trigger a conflict error [4][5][6].

site:vercel.com/docs/sandbox/sdk-reference Sandbox.getOrCreate atomic concurrent same name @vercel/sandbox 3.2.2
💡 Result:
In @vercel/sandbox (version 3.2.2), the Sandbox.getOrCreate method is designed as the recommended pattern for managing long-lived, named sandboxes [1][2]. Regarding atomicity and concurrent calls: - If multiple concurrent calls to Sandbox.getOrCreate use the same name, the SDK ensures that only one sandbox with that name is successfully created [1][2]. - If a sandbox with the specified name already exists, the method retrieves the existing instance and ignores the creation parameters (such as configuration settings passed to it) [1]. - If no sandbox exists, a new one is created, and the onCreate callback is awaited before the method resolves [1][2]. - If a sandbox exists but its snapshot has expired, the stale sandbox is deleted, and a new one is re-created with the same name, triggering the onCreate callback [2]. Because getOrCreate is intended to handle the lifecycle of named sandboxes, it handles the underlying checks for existence to prevent duplicate creation attempts for the same name [1][2]. Configuration updates for an existing sandbox should be performed using the sandbox.update method rather than passing new configuration parameters to getOrCreate, as those parameters are ignored if the sandbox already exists [1].

Make named provisioning atomic and ownership-aware.
Concurrent calls can both pass getSandbox(args.name). One Sandbox.create or Sandbox.fork then fails on the duplicate name. Its provisionCloudWorkspace cleanup calls deleteSandbox(providerSandboxId), which resolves the shared name and can delete the sandbox created by the other call.
Use Sandbox.getOrCreate from @vercel/sandbox 3.2.2, or recover duplicate-name errors by fetching the existing sandbox. Track whether this invocation created the sandbox, and delete it only when it owns creation.

Left open: a workspace is provisioned once by the row that owns its name, so the duplicate-name race needs two provisions of one row; recovering it with getOrCreate rests on a library claim this PR does not verify. Follow-up.

@saddlepaddle, acknowledged. The current provisioning ownership model makes the duplicate-name path require duplicate processing of the same workspace row. The Sandbox.getOrCreate concurrency behavior is not verified by this PR. Keep this thread open for the follow-up.

Learning: In the cloud workspace provisioning flow, a workspace row owns its sandbox name and is provisioned once. A duplicate-name race requires duplicate provisioning of the same workspace row. Do not rely on unverified `vercel/sandbox` `Sandbox.getOrCreate` concurrency behavior when reviewing this flow.

Pin the validated destination before the outbound request
checkPublicEndpoint() resolves the user-supplied hostname, but probe() resolves it again through fetch(). DNS rebinding can pass the public-address check and redirect the credential probe to a private address. Return the validated address and force the request to connect to it while preserving the original hostname for HTTPS. Keep redirect: "error" for post-validation redirects. Update the checkPublicEndpoint() documentation to describe the pinning behavior.

Left open: pinning the resolved address through fetch is a heavier change than this PR carries. The public-address check plus redirect: "error" stays; DNS rebinding of the probe is recorded as a follow-up.

@saddlepaddle, acknowledged. The finding remains open because fetch() can re-resolve the hostname after checkPublicEndpoint() completes. The current public-address check and redirect: "error" reduce exposure but do not prevent DNS rebinding.
Would you like me to create a GitHub follow-up issue for destination pinning?

@saddlepaddle Your separation of workspace access from sandbox wake/readiness inspired a small local experiment on the access-token boundary. Using the original signing/verifying functions at That last check was only another verifier call, not a sandbox restart: we did not exercise the cloud, HTTP middleware, or process lifecycle. It helped us distinguish a valid workspace credential from evidence that a particular execution instance is ready. For a follow-up stop/reopen experiment, should we expect an unexpired token to remain valid across the new process while readiness is established separately, or is there a lifecycle boundary elsewhere that should invalidate it? We are asking about the intended continuity contract, not treating the absence of a process-generation input as a defect. Original-function probe, nine observations, and limitations. |
…dens The sandbox desktop now runs on TigerVNC's Xvnc (damage-driven, pushed frames) instead of Xvfb polled by x11vnc, and looks like a desktop: WhiteSur GTK/icon/cursor themes built from pinned sources, the Big Sur Plank dock with Chrome, Files and Terminal bound to their own desktop entries, the Superset mark on the panel, photo wallpapers per workspace, Chrome opening maximized on the window manager's frame with no first-run or crash bubbles and a CDP port for agents. The image carries a project toolchain (build-essential, clang, Python, JDK, Go and Docker from their vendors, gh) and the desktop group installs with recommends — `--no-install-recommends` had silently dropped the SVG pixbuf loader. dockerd starts on every boot with fuse-overlayfs. Sandboxes live in sfo1 (`VERCEL_SANDBOX_REGION`; ~23 ms per request from San Francisco against ~190 ms to iad1); forks inherit the golden's region because snapshots are region-bound. Promote and the release wait for the stop snapshot to be current before anything forks — stop() returns during `stopping`, and a fork taken then boots from the bare image. The boot script waits for the restored checkout, removes stale X locks, starts the system bus, and logs its bootstrap decision. xdg-open and x-www-browser ran the bare Chrome binary, which refuses to start as root, so links opened by apps and agents went nowhere; a wrapper carrying the desktop entry's flags is now the system browser and $BROWSER. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01WcGbULcxE9Nw1Y8YVqe3KZ
Chrome's SingletonLock names the hostname and pid of the session that created it. A woken sandbox restores the file with a new hostname, so the first Chrome launch stops on "profile in use by another computer" until the user clicks Unlock. Nothing is running at boot, so the lock is always stale. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01WcGbULcxE9Nw1Y8YVqe3KZ
The icon theme entry named after the window class is what the panel button, Plank and the window switcher all show for Superset. The black mark read as a placeholder next to the other app icons; the real app icon (mark on its rounded square) is what the dock shows on other desktops. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01WcGbULcxE9Nw1Y8YVqe3KZ
The VM's 64 MB /dev/shm is where Chromium's software compositor keeps every window's tiles; a third Electron window on the sandbox display ran it dry and the renderer aborted with an out-of-memory SIGTRAP (minidump-verified). Remount at half of RAM before the desktop starts. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01WcGbULcxE9Nw1Y8YVqe3KZ
… desktop shells Prompts from dotfiles print Nerd Font private-use glyphs (git state, powerline) that plain JetBrains Mono rendered as diamonds in the desktop terminal; the image now ships JetBrainsMono Nerd Font and the terminal and xsettings use it. Desktop-launched shells also get SUPERSET_WORKSPACE_PATH, which host-service already gives the app's terminals, so dotfile navigation (`nav r`, `gt r`) resolves /workspace instead of a laptop path. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01WcGbULcxE9Nw1Y8YVqe3KZ
At 4 vCPU / 8 GB an agent that brought up the dev stack and an Electron instance saturated the VM until it answered nothing. 16 GB is the plan's cap and what the goldens already run.
Conflicts: main's guard rename (assertInternal -> assertCloudAccess) in the cloud-workspace and environment routers, bun.lock, and migration numbering — main added 0112_automation_continue_agent_session, so the branch's two migrations are regenerated from the merged schema as 0113 (agent credentials and Vercel sandbox columns, same statements) and 0114 (the retire-Blaxel data migration, custom).
…AY=:1" This reverts commit 96a7eaf.
…onger open XDG_SESSION_TYPE, XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP and DESKTOP_SESSION are what a logged-in session exports and what tools check before assuming a machine is headless. The considerations entry on delete was stale: cloud rows already route to cloudWorkspace.delete, and four sidebar deletes removed four sandboxes at the provider.
XDG_SESSION_TYPE, XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP and DESKTOP_SESSION went in on the theory that tools check them before assuming a headless box. Nothing was shown to fail without them, so they were a guess; the boot script keeps only lines with a reproduced failure behind them.
…the environment The creator's saved credentials reached the sandbox only when the workspace launched an agent, and the boot script sourced the shared environment file over them, so an environment key could override a personal sign-in. Also: the seeded environment row keeps its provider on conflict, host readiness polls are bounded per request, the auth dialog forgets an unsaved method on close, the smoke script records teardown failures, and the acceptance checklist and six translations say what they mean.

Why
Blaxel was acquired. Cloud workspaces now run in Vercel Sandbox. This also folds in #7391 (per-user agent sign-in); if that merges first, this branch's migrations need renumbering — if this merges first, close #7391.
What changes
packages/trpc/src/lib/sandbox/(waslib/blaxel/). Persistent sandboxes with a 4h session timeout that only the open workspace extends; forks from a stopped golden's snapshot; the org's model keys injected at the egress firewall on image and fork sandboxes (a personal credential or environment variable for a provider suppresses its rule). Image built withvercel vcr buildinto the team'ssandboxesproject.SandboxAccessHostAuthProviderreplaces the accept-everythingEdgeGuardedHostAuthProvider). Clients present it as the same bearer a local host reads; all Blaxel preview-token plumbing (desktop + mobile) is gone. CSP allows*.vercel.run; host-service answers CORS*in sandbox mode.docs/cloud-sandbox-mismatches.md): a resumed session has no processes;snapshot()ends the session and is the resume point; inbound traffic never wakes. Addressing and waking are separate requests (accessreportsrunning; only the open workspace wakes), the open workspace's address is held until host-service answers, and promote keeps the source resumable.agent_credentials(regenerated from feat(cloud): sign each person's own agent in for their cloud workspaces #7391 after the 0111 collision) + provider defaults tovercel; 0113 retires Blaxel-backed rows (ready workspaces → failed, fork environments archived).Xvncreplaces Xvfb + x11vnc (damage-driven, pushed frames — measurably smoother; the pane pins 1920×1200 scaled to fit). The image builds WhiteSur GTK/icon/cursor themes from pinned sources, ships the Big Sur Plank dock (Chrome, Files, Terminal bound to their own desktop entries — Plank matches windows by desktop-file name and reads GSettings, not its settings file), the Superset mark on the panel, photo wallpapers per workspace, JetBrains Mono terminal, and Chrome opening maximized on the window manager's frame with no first-run/crash bubbles and a CDP port.
