feat(cloud): sign each person's own agent in for their cloud workspaces - #7391
saddlepaddle wants to merge 9 commits into
Conversation
Sidebar gains a Cloud group holding Environments and Agents; the old Agents page becomes Agent commands. The Agents page lists the agents the sandbox image carries with a Set up button that opens a dialog: subscription sign-in (with a setup-token paste path), API key with an advanced base URL, and a nested custom-provider view (Vercel AI Gateway, Bedrock, manual). Save validates and toasts; the dialog stays open on rejection. State lives in an in-memory store; nothing is persisted or sent anywhere. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Xq77pwTniotXHuqzD5m3Rq
…ud workspaces A person connects their agent once and the workspaces they start run as them. agent_credentials holds one row per user per agent, encrypted at rest with the same sealed envelope the environment secrets use, now shared as secret-box and bound by AAD to the user and agent rather than to an environment row. Saving checks the credential against the provider first, so a typo is caught while the field is still open, and each refusal has its own catalogue key. Provisioning resolves the starter's credential for the agent being launched and appends it to the sandbox env, after the environment's own keys so a personal sign-in wins. Promotion blanks the credential vars, so a golden never carries the promoter's. A subscription is the agent CLI's own long-lived token, so nothing needs refreshing on our side. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Xq77pwTniotXHuqzD5m3Rq
The Agents page and its dialog now read and write the agent_credentials router instead of the renderer-only mock. Saving sends the credential to the server, which checks it against the provider before storing it, so one call both verifies and saves and a refusal keeps the dialog open. Three things the mock could do that a real one cannot. The stored secret is never returned, so the connected view shows the account and drops the reveal toggle. The sign-in button faked an OAuth round trip; the token paste path is the real flow, so the button is gone until we implement it. Custom providers are the gateway only, since a key plus a base URL is what a credential row holds; Bedrock needs several fields and is not wired. The dialog moves next to the page that uses it, and the dead per-agent section it used to live in is deleted. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Xq77pwTniotXHuqzD5m3Rq
Only the subscription card offered a way to disconnect, so a key pasted by mistake could never be taken back out. The API key card gets the same control, which also covers a saved custom provider. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Xq77pwTniotXHuqzD5m3Rq
Three faults in the custom-provider check, found by asking whether a bad key is really refused. The base URL is entered with its version segment already on it and the probe appended another, so every request landed on a doubled path and 404'd. That refused good keys as well as bad ones, with a confusing message. It sent Anthropic's header to an endpoint that speaks the OpenAI convention. Worst of the three: the gateway's model list needs no credential at all and answers 200, so once the path was fixed the check would have accepted every key, valid or not. Gateway credentials now probe the credits endpoint, which authenticates, and the base URL is normalised so a version segment, a trailing slash, or neither all resolve to the same request. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Xq77pwTniotXHuqzD5m3Rq
…atalogs Rebasing onto main moved the migration number and reset the catalogs to main's. The migration is regenerated at the next free number, and the translations for this branch's strings are restored on top of main's. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01XKiU6G6KYav29vnCvkWD45

Rebuild and publish the cloud image before deploying this change.
scripts/sandbox/image.ts copies packages/host-service/dist into superset-hostsvc. The application deployment workflows do not run sandbox:release. Run bun run sandbox:release without --skip-base. Otherwise, cloud workspaces continue to run the previous host-service bundle and will not forward the new variables.

Review found three real defects, all in what happens after a credential is accepted. A base URL alone was read as "this is a custom provider", so an ordinary Anthropic key pointed at a compatible endpoint came back labelled Vercel AI Gateway. The provider is now stored and returned, and only it decides. A gateway credential with no base URL validated against the gateway and was then handed to the agent with no endpoint at all, which would have sent the key to Anthropic or OpenAI instead. A gateway now always carries its endpoint and must be an API key. A base URL could be http, which would put the credential on the wire in cleartext both when checking it and when injecting it. Only https is accepted. The copy button beside the setup-token command did nothing; it now uses the shared clipboard hook and shows that it copied. |
All five review findings were valid. Four are fixed in Provider inferred from Gateway shape not enforced — fixed, and the consequence was worse than a shape violation. With HTTPS not required — fixed. Copy button had no handler — fixed. It now uses the existing Cloud image must be rebuilt before deploying — correct, and now called out under "Before merging". Still unverified and worth a human pass: no cloud workspace has actually run on a personal credential yet, and while bad gateway keys are provably refused, no valid one has been accepted — I don't have one to test with. |
The previous commit rewrote 0111 to include the column. That migration had already been applied on this pull request's database branch, so the rewrite came back as a duplicate type and failed the deploy. A migration that has run anywhere is append-only; 0111 is restored to what was applied and the column arrives in 0112. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01XKiU6G6KYav29vnCvkWD45

Restrict validation requests to authorized public destinations.
An authenticated caller controls baseUrl. Line 87 passes it to validateAgentCredential, which probes that destination with credential headers. The HTTPS check does not reject loopback, private, link-local, or DNS-rebound destinations. This permits server-side probing of reachable internal HTTPS services.
Parse and authorize the destination before the probe. Reject restricted resolved addresses. Revalidate every redirect destination.

The caller chooses the base URL and the server then calls it with the credential attached, so an https check alone let someone aim that probe at loopback, private, link-local or carrier-grade NAT addresses and learn what is reachable from the API. The destination is resolved and refused if any address it answers with sits in one of those ranges, and the probe no longer follows redirects, which would otherwise carry the credential somewhere that was never authorised. Name resolution is advisory rather than pinned, which is why refusing redirects matters as well. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01XKiU6G6KYav29vnCvkWD45

Valid, and fixed in The base URL is caller-supplied and the server calls it with the credential attached, so the HTTPS check alone still allowed aiming that probe at internal destinations and learning what answers. The destination is now resolved before the probe and refused if any address it returns falls in a loopback, private, link-local, carrier-grade NAT, multicast or unique-local range, and the probe no longer follows redirects — a redirect would otherwise carry the credential to somewhere that was never authorised. Resolution is advisory rather than pinned, so a name that changes between the check and the request is not fully closed off. Refusing redirects is what bounds that; pinning the resolved address through a custom agent would be the complete fix and is heavier than this surface warrants today. Behaviour, checked against the real resolver:

Reject hexadecimal IPv4-mapped IPv6 endpoints before probing credentials.
Node parses https://[::ffff:7f00:1] as IPv6, so isRestrictedAddress skips its IPv4 checks. The provider probe then sends Authorization or x-api-key to the accepted endpoint. Normalize all IPv4-mapped IPv6 forms before range checks and add loopback and RFC1918 regression tests.

Why
Every cloud sandbox runs on the organization's Anthropic and OpenAI keys, so all agent usage lands on our bill with no per-organization attribution or cap.
docs/cloud-sandbox-considerations.mdmarks that unshippable the moment someone outside the team can create a sandbox — it is one of the things that has to exist before the gate comes off, not after. This lets a person connect their own agent credential once. The cloud workspaces they start then run as them.
What changes
Storage.
agent_credentials, one row per person per agent, encrypted at rest. The AES-GCM envelope that environment secrets already used is extracted topackages/trpc/src/lib/secret-box.tsso there is one implementation; the AAD string and envelope layout are byte-identical, so existing secrets keep decrypting. Credentials bind their ciphertext to the person and agent instead of an environment row. Scoped to the user, not the organization — a subscription is personal and should follow someone between organizations.Validation happens before storage.
agentCredential.setcalls the provider first and only writes if the provider accepts, so one call both verifies and saves and a bad key never reaches the database. Each refusal has its own catalogue key.Injection.
provisionCloudWorkspaceresolves the starter's credential for the agent being launched and appends it toworkspaceEnv, after the environment's own keys so a personal sign-in wins. The new variables are added toINHERITED_IDENTITY_ENVS, so promoting a sandbox to a golden blanks them and no golden carries the promoter's credential, and toSANDBOX_AGENT_CREDENTIAL_KEYSso the in-sandbox host-service forwards them to the agent process.Settings. A new Cloud group in the settings sidebar holds Environments (moved out of Organization) and Agents. The old
/settings/agentspage — enabled agents, launch commands, hooks — is relabelled Agent commands, since it is a different thing and two entries called "Agents" would be unreadable. The whole group is v2-only, so it hides itself when cloud is off.A subscription here is the agent CLI's own long-lived token (
claude setup-token), which needs no refreshing on our side. That is why there is no OAuth broker in this PR.Three things the design does not do
Verified
Driven over CDP against the real API and a Neon branch, not mocked:
Anthropic rejected this API key., dialog stays open, zero rows written.last_validated_atset, list reads "Connected with API key".The gateway check was wrong in three ways and is fixed: the base URL already carries its version segment and the probe appended another (404 on every key, good ones included); it sent Anthropic's header to an endpoint speaking the OpenAI convention; and the gateway's model list answers 200 with no credential at all, so fixing only the path would have made the check accept everything. Gateway keys now probe
/v1/credits, which authenticates. Measured:api.anthropic.com/v1/modelsapi.openai.com/v1/modelsai-gateway.vercel.sh/v1/modelsai-gateway.vercel.sh/v1/creditsNot verified
Before merging
The cloud image has to be rebuilt.
packages/host-serviceis bundled intosuperset-hostsvcbyscripts/sandbox/image.ts, and no application deploy workflow runssandbox:release. Untilbun run sandbox:releaseruns without--skip-base, sandboxes keep the old host-service bundle and will not forward the new credential variables — the credential would be stored and injected into the sandbox environment but never reach the agent process. Merging without this is not harmful, just inert.Notes
0111_agent_credentials, applied only to a personal Neon branch. No shared or production database was touched.https://claude.ai/code/session_01XKiU6G6KYav29vnCvkWD45

Lets a person connect their own agent credential once, so cloud workspaces they start run as them instead of on the organization's shared keys.
