feat(i18n): language switcher on marketing and docs - #6992
Conversation
Follows the pattern of the best localized sites (Stripe, Mozilla): a native select in the chrome — marketing footer, docs navbar — options in their own language with a lang attribute each so screen readers pronounce them correctly, a globe icon, no flags, and an Auto entry that follows the browser. The choice persists in a LOCALE_COOKIE that one mechanism honors everywhere: marketing reads it server-side before Accept-Language, and inferLocale reads it in the browser, so the client-resolved apps (docs, web, desktop web views) follow the same choice without going dynamic. The marketing layout now threads its server-resolved locale into the client provider, so both halves of a page always agree on the language. Applying a choice reloads the page deliberately: server-rendered apps must re-resolve, and the whole page changes language. When the [lang] URL migration lands, only that apply step changes. Verified against a local build: cookie ja with an English Accept-Language serves lang="ja" and the Japanese hero; an invalid cookie falls back to header negotiation; the footer select renders every native name with its lang attribute. The four label strings are left for the Translate Catalogs workflow. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_012U97YWVsDvZwQkBaSGEmor

It persists explicit locale choices in a cookie, resolves them on server and browser paths, passes the locale to the marketing i18n provider, and adds translations for supported locales. Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to Language selection may briefly disagree with the server-rendered marketing locale, and a choice on the marketing site will not automatically carry to the separate docs host. The PR is otherwise mergeable with explicit owner awareness of these bounded integration and user-experience risks. Sequence Diagram(s)sequenceDiagram

Add a language selector to NavigationMobile.
NavigationBar hides its only LanguageSwitcher below the navbar breakpoint. NavigationMobile renders no equivalent control. Add one so mobile users can select a locale or return to Auto.

Initialize the client locale before hydration.
When the server-resolved locale differs from inferLocale(), I18nProvider uses the browser locale for its first client render because it applies locale only in useEffect. The subsequent initI18n update can cause a visible language correction. Initialize i18n from locale before the first render.

Adds a language switcher to the marketing footer and docs navbar, following what the best localized landing pages actually do (checked stripe.com/jp and mozilla.org/ja before building):
<select>(Mozilla's a11y-canonical control), globe icon, no flags — flags name countries, not languages日本語,Français, …) fromLOCALE_LABELS, each with itslangattribute so screen readers pronounce them correctlyMechanism

LOCALE_COOKIE, honored everywhere: marketing reads it server-side before Accept-Language (#6991's resolution), andinferLocalereads it in the browser — so docs stays fully static while still honoring the choice, and desktop/web pick it up for free. The marketing layout now threads its server-resolved locale into the client provider, closing the last server/client locale split. Applying reloads the page (deliberate — the whole document changes language; Stripe/Mozilla navigate too). When the[lang]URL migration happens, only the apply step changes to a navigation.Verified (local build)
