The failure mode

A production page review (152 screenshots, en/ja/ru/tr) found 25 marketing pages serving English heroes or whole English bodies to non-English visitors, each with a React #418 hydration mismatch. Root cause: every route entry called bare initServerI18n(), which activates the default locale regardless of Accept-Language — the entire RSC pass rendered English, and client components re-localized on hydration (masking it on some pages, mismatching on all). Sentry saw none of it: recoverable hydration errors aren't captured, so this class was invisible to monitoring, and status-code smoke tests can't see it either.

Point fix

initServerI18n() in marketing now resolves Accept-Language per request (quality-ordered), preloads that catalog, activates it, and returns the locale; all 31 route entries await it; the layout writes the resolved locale into <html lang> (was hardcoded "en"). Pages are already dynamic (session-aware nav), so no rendering-cost change.

Runtime proof (local build): ja request → lang="ja", 1,501 CJK chars, hero どのチームにも分かりやすい料金; en request unchanged; only remaining English is by-design SEO <meta description>.

Systematic guards — the "this must never ship again" part

  1. Build-time: the RSC seeding ratchet now requires the awaited request-aware call. A bare or un-awaited initServerI18n() — the exact bug — fails bun test packages/i18n. Proven by reverting one call site: 3 pass / 1 fail naming the file.
  2. Deploy-time: smoke-routes.ts --localized (wired into the marketing deploy step) fetches every route with Accept-Language: ja and fails on served lang≠"ja" or a page with no Japanese text — both read the raw served HTML, so client-side patch-up cannot mask a server regression. Run against production today it fails on every page, including ones the browser review had passed.

Follow-ups noted, not in this PR

  • Capture React recoverable/hydration errors into Sentry (the monitoring blind spot)
  • app.superset.sh/cli/auth/code renders its error string pre-catalog-load (client-side timing, all locales)
  • CSP on app.superset.sh blocks the Cloudflare Insights beacon on every page

Summary by cubic

Marketing pages now render in the request's language instead of always English. The old initServerI18n() activated the default locale regardless of Accept-Language, so 25 pages sent English heroes or whole English bodies to ja/ru/tr visitors, and every one produced a React hydration mismatch that Sentry never captured because recoverable hydration errors aren't reported.

Bug Fixes

  • The marketing initServerI18n() now reads Accept-Language per request, preloads and activates that catalog, and returns the locale; all 31 route entries await it.
  • The layout writes the resolved locale into <html lang> instead of hardcoded "en".
  • No rendering-cost change — pages are already dynamically rendered for the session-aware nav, and the only remaining English in a ja page is the by-design SEO meta description.

Regression Guards

  • The RSC seeding test now rejects a bare or un-awaited initServerI18n() call; reverting one call site fails the build.
  • smoke-routes.ts --localized, wired into the marketing deploy step, fetches every route with Accept-Language: ja and fails when the served HTML has lang="en" or no Japanese text, so client-side patch-up can't mask a server regression.

Written for commit 9377cff. Summary will update on new commits.

  • New Features

    • Marketing pages now serve content in the language requested by the browser.
    • The page language attribute reflects the selected locale.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved localized rendering by ensuring translations load before page content appears.
    • Enhanced localization consistency across marketing, blog, legal, marketplace, and 404 pages.
  • Tests

    • Added smoke-test coverage to verify Japanese localization and translated page content across routes.

…s a blocked deploy

A production review found 25 pages serving English heroes or whole
English bodies to ja/ru/tr visitors, with a hydration mismatch on each:
every route entry seeded RSC i18n with a bare initServerI18n(), which
activates the default locale no matter what Accept-Language says. Client
components then re-localized on hydration, which both masked the bug on
some pages and caused the mismatches. None of it reached Sentry: React's
recoverable hydration errors are not captured, so the whole class was
invisible to monitoring.

The point fix: initServerI18n() in the marketing app now resolves
Accept-Language per request, preloads that catalog, and activates it;
all 31 route entries await it, and the layout writes the resolved locale
into html lang instead of a hardcoded "en". The pages are already
dynamically rendered for the session-aware nav, so this adds no
rendering cost.

The systematic guards, so this failure mode cannot ship again:

The RSC seeding ratchet now requires the awaited request-aware call — a
bare or un-awaited initServerI18n() fails the build, proven by reverting
one call site.

The deploy smoke test gains a --localized pass, wired into the marketing
deploy: every route is also fetched with Accept-Language: ja and fails
on served html lang other than ja or on a page with no Japanese text.
Both signals read the raw served HTML, so client-side patch-up cannot
mask a server regression. Run against production as it is today, it
fails on every page — including pages the browser review had passed,
because hydration was papering over English server HTML.

Verified locally: ja request serves lang="ja" with a Japanese hero
(どのチームにも分かりやすい料金), en request unchanged, localized smoke
green. Remaining English in a ja page is meta description SEO text,
which is English by design.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Marketing server routes now resolve locales from Accept-Language, await i18n initialization, and set the document language. The preview smoke test validates Japanese responses when requested.

Marketing i18n localization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Request locale resolution
apps/marketing/src/app/i18n-server.ts
initServerI18n() parses Accept-Language, resolves and preloads a supported locale, activates server i18n, and returns the locale.

Marketing server components await initServerI18n() before rendering. The root layout uses the resolved locale for html lang. The RSC guard requires awaited initialization calls.
Localized preview validation
scripts/smoke-routes.ts, .github/workflows/deploy-preview.yml
The smoke test adds --localized, requests Japanese responses, checks the HTML language and CJK content, and enables the check for preview deployment.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 9377c

This PR makes marketing pages follow the visitor’s language and adds a deploy guard, but locale preference parsing can still mishandle malformed priorities and the guard can accept pages missing the language attribute entirely. Those bounded correctness and regression-detection risks should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge.

Reject invalid or zero-quality language entries.

Number.parseFloat accepts prefixes such as 0.5junk, and the filter keeps finite values outside the valid q-value range, including 0. A request such as fr;q=0,ja;q=0 can therefore select fr instead of falling back, and ja;q=2 can outrank valid preferences. Parse a strict q-value and keep only 0 < q <= 1.

Reject mixed awaited and unawaited initServerI18n() calls. SEEDS.test(source) only requires one awaited call, so a route containing both forms can pass. Check every invocation or add a negative check for bare calls.

Fail when the HTML language attribute is missing.

When <html> has no matching lang attribute, lang is undefined and this condition does not report a failure. The localized smoke test can therefore pass a response with Japanese text but no document language.
