feat: continue a terminal session with another agent, or fork it - #6962
Conversation
Adds `forkArgs` to host agent configs (migration 0026) and `forkSessionId` to `agents.run`, so a launch can ask the provider to clone an existing session into a new one and leave the source untouched. Claude and Codex ship fork commands; every other preset gets an empty list and is rejected with a clear message rather than silently starting fresh. `FORK_SESSION_ID_TOKEN` marks where the provider's own id goes, since the two CLIs disagree on position: claude takes `--resume <id> --fork-session`, codex takes `fork <id>`. When the token is absent the id is appended. Passing both resumeSessionId and forkSessionId is now reported as the conflict it is, ahead of the per-field validators that would otherwise blame the agent's fork support.
…d PTY stream Handing a session's context to another agent needs its recent output as text. `terminal.snapshot` cannot supply that for the sessions that matter: it reads `term.buffer.active`, and the alternate screen every TUI agent renders to keeps no scrollback, so `maxLines` is inert there and whatever the program has already drawn over is gone. Measured against a real pager paging 300 known lines, snapshot(800) returned 23 of them; after the pager restored the normal screen it returned none. `session.retained` already holds the last 2 MB of raw PTY output for every session, attached or not, so `transcriptSession` reads that instead and sanitizes it with the shared helper. Same probe: 253 lines, `source: "stream"`. It falls back to the visible screen only when the ring is empty (an adopted session that has not written since), and says which it used. Bounding and sanitizing happen host-side so every caller gets identical text for a terminal instead of each repeating the budget. Two mode-tracker tests pin down why the screen is not the source.
…rface Adds the pane-header menu behind the fork icon with two actions. "Continue with another agent" starts a fresh session of a different harness seeded with the source terminal's recent context, for when a session is wedged, out of context, or simply the wrong tool. "Fork session" asks the provider for a native clone and leaves the original running. The same two are on the CLI, so an automation can do it unattended: superset agents create --workspace W --agent codex --from-terminal T superset agents create --workspace W --agent claude --fork-session S Both surfaces call terminal.transcript and neither sanitizes or bounds the text itself, so a given terminal hands over identical bytes either way. The CLI hands off from a terminal with no agent binding too, naming no source harness in the prompt; the desktop menu still requires one. Settings gains Fork args per agent. Its hint interpolates the placeholder through a named value rather than a literal, which ICU parsed as an empty argument and swallowed. `forkArgs` is read defensively so a desktop pointed at a host service that predates it degrades to "cannot fork" instead of throwing mid-render.

📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe change adds terminal-to-agent handoff and provider session forking. It persists provider-specific fork arguments, exposes transcript retrieval, updates CLI options, adds host validation, preserves replay-buffer size across daemon upgrades, and integrates handoff and fork actions into the desktop terminal UI. ChangesTerminal session actions
Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to This change can reject valid Claude forks configured outside the default directory, potentially allow session identifiers to be reused across workspace or account boundaries, and repeat provider forks after ambiguous retries; copied terminal output is also passed into new agent prompts, creating a bounded prompt-injection concern. Merge should wait for the configuration-directory fix and explicit owner acceptance or mitigation for session ownership, retry behavior, and agent authorization. Sequence Diagram(s)sequenceDiagram

… met Sanitizing ran on a fixed 4x multiple of the character budget, which was right when the input was the emulator's already-clean screen text and wrong once it became the raw PTY stream. Live agent panes sanitize at 6:1 to 10:1, so the window ran out of input before the budget filled and the handoff quietly shipped a third to two thirds of what the dialog promises: a 6.7:1 stream delivered 22,121 of 36,000 chars, a 11.9:1 stream 12,188. The ratio is not knowable up front, so widen the window until the budget is met or the input is exhausted. Full budget at every density measured, and still 2-6 ms against a full 2 MB retention ring.
The daemon defaults to 64 KB and the supervisor never asked for more, so a host-service restart cut a session's recoverable history to that: adoption refills the 2 MB catch-up ring from the daemon's buffer alone, which at the 6-10 bytes per character a live agent pane costs is about 9k characters, a quarter of what a handoff is allowed to send. 512 KB rather than matching the ring, because this is held per session in daemon memory and a machine with twenty terminals should not carry 40 MB of scrollback nobody has asked for.
Slicing the newest characters blind opened transcripts mid-word, which reads as corruption rather than as a tail, and nothing told the receiving agent it was looking at one — so it would narrate the work as if the session began wherever the slice landed. Cut at the first line break inside the budget and lead with an explicit notice.
…ness's own Stripping escape sequences recovers every character a program wrote, which is why the handoff reads the PTY stream, but it only reads well for programs that write in lines. A TUI positions with `ESC[row;1H` and repaints, so stripping left its output with no line breaks at all and each visible row repeated once per repaint: a 400-turn viewport model came out as a single 444,912-character line. Replaying the stream through an emulator and sampling the viewport turns that into 400 lines in 19,489 characters, with every turn intact. Sampling rather than splitting on repaints, because programs disagree about what a repaint is: `less` never erases the screen, it only scrolls. Sampling is also unconditional rather than gated on the alternate screen, since the retention ring is a tail and the `?1049h` that entered it is usually long evicted, which would have a replay believe it was on the normal screen. Verified on the live host: 300 of 300 known lines through a pager where the screen snapshot could see 52. Where the harness keeps its own conversation store, that beats any reconstruction, so read Claude's session JSONL when one exists and fall back to the stream everywhere else. Only while the agent still owns the terminal: a binding whose session has ended describes work the terminal is no longer doing, which a first pass duly handed over.
A handoff pushed 36,000 characters, roughly 9-12k tokens, into the target's first turn with no way to see or change that. The dialog now fetches the transcript when it opens rather than on Continue, so the decision is made with the size on screen, and the CLI takes --context-chars. The dialog copy drops its fixed "up to 36,000 characters", which was never what a given terminal actually had.

- The daemon's replay buffer reverted to its 64 KB default after a self upgrade, because the handoff receiver built its Server without a cap and the predecessor never passed one. Every daemon update silently shrank a session's recoverable history. - The harness transcript read the whole session file before bounding it. This repo's own dev session file is 3.9 MB, and splitting and parsing all of it to answer one handoff belongs nowhere near the host's event loop. Reads a bounded tail now; a cut lands mid-line, which the parser already skips. - A budget smaller than the truncation notice returned more characters than it was given, and the CLI accepted --context-chars 0 and then dropped it through a truthiness check. The host also took any positive maxChars, sizing a response it builds in memory from client input; capped now. - The dialog turned a failed transcript read into an empty one, so it reported "0 characters" with Continue still armed and failed only after the click. Failure, empty, and loading are now three states, and Continue waits for real context.
The preset table claimed two of nineteen harnesses could fork. Reading the installed CLIs' own help says six can, so opencode, pi, grok, and droid were being offered a disabled menu item for a feature they ship. Each line mirrors that harness's documented syntax rather than a house style, since they disagree: a boolean paired with the session flag (`opencode --session <id> --fork`), the id as the flag's own value (`pi --fork <id>`, `droid --fork <id>`), and a modifier on resume (`grok --resume <id> --fork-session`, like claude). Verified against the real binaries: all four accept the flags and fail only on a bogus id. Left alone deliberately: amp, gemini, copilot, cursor-agent, vibe, kimi, kiro, fx, hermes, polygraph, omp and agy have resume but no fork in their CLIs, and mastracode's `--clone-thread` is documented only for headless runs, so none of them get a command that would quietly start fresh.
Testing fork on every harness turned up a case the code did not handle: a codex session with no rollout on disk. The launch succeeded, the pane opened, and the harness reported "no rollout found for thread id" inside it, which is an error about a click the user made somewhere else entirely. The same id had forked correctly minutes earlier, so nothing about the request looked wrong. So ask the harness's own store first. Claude files sessions per working directory, codex names rollouts after the session id, and opencode keeps a SQLite row, all of which answer cheaply. Only a confident no refuses: grok keeps sessions server-side and the rest are unsurveyed, and those answer "unknown" and launch exactly as before rather than being blocked on our ignorance. Checked against the real stores, including the exact codex id whose fork had failed in the pane; it now answers false and is refused at the point of asking. The opencode lookup opens its database read-only but deliberately not `immutable`, since that flag ignores the write-ahead log and reads a session written moments ago as absent. That cost me a wrong conclusion while testing.

Testing pi's fork end to end meant finding where it files sessions: `~/.pi/agent/sessions/<encoded cwd>/<timestamp>_<id>.jsonl`. That is enough to answer whether a session still exists, so pi joins claude, codex, and opencode in getting a real yes or no instead of a shrug, and a fork of a session it has dropped is refused at the point of asking. Matching on the id suffix rather than rebuilding pi's encoding of the working directory: the encoding is incidental, the id is not.
Orca ships the same feature under MIT, and this started as a port of their `agent-session-fork-context.ts`: same 36,000-character budget, same bound-sanitize-fence shape. The licence permits that and asks for the notice, which was missing. The header also records what has since diverged, because the overlap is now thinner than the origin suggests: the transcript comes from the host's retained PTY stream rather than the renderer's xterm buffer, the sanitizer and the budget logic were both rewritten, and the prompt prose is ours — theirs forks and waits, ours continues the work.

…ocess The opencode session lookup imported `bun:sqlite`. The host service runs under Electron's Node, where that module does not exist, so it threw at import and the process crash-looped on boot: "Cannot find module 'bun:sqlite'", eight failed respawns, and the app sat on "Host unreachable". Tests never caught it because `bun test` runs under Bun, where the import resolves fine. The host already depends on better-sqlite3 for its own database, so this adds no new dependency and runs where the code actually runs. Verified in the running app: a fork of a live opencode session is allowed and a fork of a missing one is refused by name.
Defaults are seeded once, when the table is empty, so every install that has already run the app kept `forkArgs: []` for opencode, pi, grok, and droid and silently offered no fork for harnesses whose CLIs can do it. Fresh installs got all six, everyone else got two, and the only escape was Restore default per agent. Filled in on read, but only for rows still identical to their preset: an agent whose launch settings someone has edited is theirs, and stays as it is.
Changing a `<Trans>` default does not change what renders: Lingui serves the catalog entry, and this id already had one. So the dialog kept claiming "up to 36,000 characters of recent terminal context" while the code below it had stopped working that way, which the verification film caught on screen. Second time this exact trap has bitten in this branch, after the fork-args hint. Changing copy for an existing id means editing the catalog too.
Three leftovers from iterating on this, none of them load-bearing: - `ReconstructedTranscript.samples` counted viewport samples for my own debugging and nothing ever read it; the function returns the text now. - `formatCharacterCount` was a pass-through to `formatNumber`, and read wrong at the call site that formats a token estimate. - The "Couldn't capture terminal context" toast can no longer fire, since Continue is disabled until a transcript is in hand and the dialog says why inline. Its message id and the toast import went with it.
…t is pinned to A "Claude (work)" agent carries its own CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR, and its sessions live there rather than under ~/.claude. The preflight looked only in the default directory, so for those agents it reported a live session as missing and refused a fork that would have worked: the exact failure it exists to prevent, inverted. Codex has the same shape through CODEX_HOME. Both now resolve against the env the launch will actually run under (`resolveDefaultAccountEnv` overlaid with the agent's own env, matching buildTerminalAgentLaunch), and a config dir that cannot be inspected answers "unknown" rather than "missing". The transcript reader takes the same env, so a pinned agent still gets its structured conversation instead of quietly falling back to the PTY stream.
- Sampling counted code units, which does not bound rendered rows: wrapped
double-width text scrolled more than a screen between samples, the overlap
merge found nothing to join on, and the middle vanished. 190 of 200 lines
of wrapped CJK survived; now 200. Cuts prefer a line boundary, because
sampling mid-repaint reads a torn frame that overlaps with nothing.
- Reconstruction runs synchronously inside a tRPC query, so the sample count
is now bounded however pathological the stream: a repaint-heavy 2 MB stream
cut tens of thousands of times before, and adjacent markers collapse.
- A missing Claude session file was treated as proof of absence, so an agent
started in a subdirectory, or any path Claude encodes differently, got its
fork hard-refused. Only a project directory we can actually see makes an
absent session file evidence; otherwise the answer is "unknown".
- `buildForkArgv` matched `{sessionId}` as a whole argument only, so a custom
agent written as `--session-id={sessionId}` — exactly what the settings
hint invites — passed the literal token through and appended the real id as
a stray extra. Substituted within the argument now.
- The transcript reader missed the Usage tab's default-account env, so an
account picked there fell back to the PTY stream. Same overlay the launch
uses, matching the fix already applied to the preflight.
- `Buffer.allocUnsafe` with an unchecked `readSync` could ship uninitialised
heap into another agent's prompt on a short read.
- Dropped the migration's hand-written fork-args backfill: `command =
preset_id` never matches a stock config, since every preset's command
carries its flags, so it could only ever fire on one someone had edited —
the opposite of the intent, and the runtime backfill already owns this
decision with stricter matching.

…cript The terminal integration tests run under `node --experimental-strip-types`, where @xterm/headless is CommonJS and a named import of it throws "Named export 'Terminal' not found". Bundlers and Bun both accept the named import, so the whole bun suite passed and only `test:integration:terminal` failed. The mode tracker next door had already hit this and solved it with a private createRequire; the seq-catchup test had its own third copy. Fold all three into one module that exports the class and its type, and record the reason there so the next headless terminal does not rediscover it.
Move a session's work to a different agent, or clone it, without retyping the context.
Two actions behind the fork icon in a terminal pane header, and the same two on the CLI:
Where the context comes from
The obvious source is
terminal.snapshot, and it is the wrong one. It readsterm.buffer.active, and the alternate screen every TUI agent renders to keeps no scrollback, somaxLinesis inert there and anything the program has already drawn over is unrecoverable.Measured against a real pager paging 300 known lines:
terminal.snapshot(800)terminal.transcriptWorse than truncation: once the pager exited and restored the normal screen, the snapshot held none of the 300 lines while every byte had already gone down the pty.
So
terminal.transcriptreadssession.retainedinstead, the 2 MB ring of raw pty output the host already keeps for every session whether or not a client is attached. It sanitizes and bounds host-side, so the dialog and--from-terminalhand over identical bytes for a terminal by construction rather than by two copies of a budget. It falls back to the visible screen only when the ring is empty, and reports which it used.terminal.snapshotkeeps its "current screen" meaning forsuperset terminals read.Where a harness keeps its own conversation store, that is preferred over the pty replay: structured turns beat a reconstructed screen. Lookups resolve against the agent's pinned
CLAUDE_CONFIG_DIR/CODEX_HOMErather than the default, so an agent on a second provider account is not mistaken for a missing session.Forking
forkArgson host agent configs (migration0028_funny_gideon.sql) plusforkSessionIdonagents.run. The CLIs disagree on where the id goes, soFORK_SESSION_ID_TOKENmarks the position; absent the token the id is appended. Settings gains a Fork args field per agent, and installs predating the migration are backfilled on read, but only for configs still identical to their preset.Six presets ship native fork commands. Each was read out of that CLI's own docs, then run: a codeword said to the source session, the fork launched, the fork asked what the codeword was.
--resume {sessionId} --fork-sessionKESTREL-8801fork {sessionId}MARLINSPIKE-4417--session {sessionId} --forkHALYARD-2290, new session titled "(fork #1)"--resume {sessionId} --fork-sessionBOWSPRIT-6135--fork {sessionId}TILLERMAN-7756--fork {sessionId}A fork is refused up front only when the harness's own session store says the source session is gone. "Unknown" still launches: only a project directory that exists and lacks the file is evidence of absence, and harnesses that keep sessions server-side always answer unknown.
