fix(desktop): finish the Remote Access rename, and stop English edits stranding translations - #6959
Conversation
Explicit message IDs are loosely coupled to their text, so editing English copy in source does not by itself change what ships, in two separate ways. `msgstr` in locales/en is what renders, and plain `lingui extract` only fills in new IDs — an edit to an existing message left the old English shipping. Extraction now runs with `--overwrite`, which rebuilds the source locale from source code every time. Nothing then invalidates ja/zh, and `compile --strict` still passes because nothing is missing, so a translation of the old wording ships silently. check-stale-translations.ts compares the branch against its merge base and fails when a message's English moved and a translation did not. Edits that genuinely do not invalidate a translation go in locales/en-only-changes.txt, keyed to the exact English text so the next edit is checked again. This rides on the existing "Audit i18n catalogs" step rather than adding one; that job's checkout needs fetch-depth 0 for a merge base to exist. An unresolvable base is a hard failure under CI and a local warning, so an unfetched history cannot report success. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_0139hmqr3QyW9K3R3ghQLMp1
#6896 renamed Remote Workspaces to Remote Access across marketing, docs and the README, but every app surface still said the old name: the settings section header and its nav entry, the command palette, the per-host section, the billing plans row, the paywall gate and its Pro feature preview, the relay toggle and its confirmation dialog, and the automations copy pointing people at "Settings > Remote Workspaces". Followed the rename into three places outside desktop that quote the desktop UI word for word and would otherwise now be wrong: the docs setup steps, both mobile host screens, and the Pro bullet in the subscription-started email. The Learn more links point at /remote-access directly instead of leaning on the 308 from the old path. Left alone: "a remote workspace" as a generic noun, meaning a workspace whose files live on another host. That is still what the sidebar badge, the Finder and external-editor guards, and the paste size limits are talking about. The catalogs also pick up a drift the new stale-translation check found on main, unrelated to this rename: web.design.aiAgentSection.55CallSitesPassShowarrow was fixed in source to pass showArrow={false} as a {code} value, precisely so ICU would not read {false} as a placeholder, but no catalog ever picked the fix up. All three locales were shipping the literal and rendering {false} as an empty placeholder. Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_0139hmqr3QyW9K3R3ghQLMp1

SETTINGS_ITEMSstores the title and description used by the settings-search surface as plain English strings. This rename therefore bypasses Lingui and the stale-translation audit. Store explicit message IDs or translate these fields at the render boundary while retaining normalized English text for matching.Based on learnings: User-facing strings use Lingui with explicit IDs.

Replace the outdated screenshot.
The alt text now says Settings → Remote Access, but the referenced asset is still /images/remote-workspaces-security-toggle.png. The screenshot can show the old Settings → Security location and old copy while the text gives new instructions. Replace the asset before release.

Correct, and already called out in the PR's Known Limitations. The screenshot needs re-shooting against the renamed UI; #6896 deliberately left remote-workspaces-*.png filenames alone. Tracked as a follow-up rather than blocking this PR, since the surrounding text is now accurate.

@Kitenite, acknowledged. The documentation text is accurate. The screenshot update is tracked in #6896 and is non-blocking for this PR.

Learning: In `apps/docs/content/docs/remote-access.mdx`, the remote-access screenshots intentionally retain existing `remote-workspaces-*.png` filenames. The screenshot must be re-shot against the renamed UI in follow-up GitHub issue `#6896`; this does not block the Remote Access rename PR when the surrounding documentation text is accurate.

…otice CodeRabbit spotted one the rename sweep missed: JSX had wrapped the string as "Settings > Remote\n Workspaces", so a line-based grep never saw it and the remote-host branch of RelayOfflineNotice still sent people to a settings section that no longer exists under that name. A multiline sweep confirms it was the only one. The stale-translation check added in this PR then flagged ja and zh-CN for that message, which is the mechanism working as intended: fixing the English alone would have left both locales pointing at the old section name. Also keep "workspaces" as a search keyword for the relay toggle. The matcher requires every term to occur, so dropping the old plural from the title and description made a search for "remote workspaces" stop finding the setting. Main's Lingui i18n pass (#6936/#6942/#6959) rewrote the same header strings this branch's toolbar redesign moved, so the resolution keeps the new layout (device title dropdown, first-class project control, Created-by filter) and adopts the i18n wrapping — including main's pin→Sidebar rename. Strings this branch introduced that main never saw are wrapped with new message ids, and the catalogs are clean-extracted with all 16 locales filled. Summary
Why / Context
#6896 deliberately stopped at the app boundary, leaving the docs quoting a toggle label that the app still rendered under the old name. Every settings surface, the paywall gate, and all the automations copy pointing at "Settings > Remote Workspaces" were still on the old vocabulary.
Doing the rename surfaced something worse. Editing the English in source did not change what ships:
msgstrinlocales/enis what actually renders, and plainlingui extractonly fills in new IDs. Five renamed strings would have kept rendering "Remote Workspaces" in the shipped app despite the source saying otherwise.compile --strictstill passes because nothing is missing. Every renamed string would have kept its old translation.Lingui documents the first as a flag and does not solve the second at all: with explicit IDs the text is "loosely coupled" to the ID, so translations are never invalidated, and no
format-pooption records source text into the translated catalogs. How It Works
Source locale.
extractnow runs--overwrite("Update translations for sourceLocale from source"), solocales/enis rebuilt from source code every time and can no longer drift. Corollary, now documented: English lives in themessage:/<Trans>body, andlocales/en/messages.pois derived, never hand-edited for wording.Translations.
packages/i18n/scripts/check-stale-translations.tscompares the branch against its merge base and fails when a message's English moved and a translation did not, printing before/after and which locales lagged. It rides on the existingAudit i18n catalogsstep rather than adding one; that job's checkout neededfetch-depth: 0so a merge base exists. An unresolvable base is a hard failure underCIand a local warning, so an unfetched history cannot quietly report success.Edits that genuinely do not invalidate a translation (an English typo fix) go in
locales/en-only-changes.txt, keyed to a fingerprint of the exact English text so the next edit to that message is checked again rather than being permanently exempt. The bug it found. On its first run against main, unrelated to this rename:
web.design.aiAgentSection.55CallSitesPassShowarrowwas fixed in source to passshowArrow={false}as a{code}value, with a comment explaining that ICU would otherwise read{false}as a placeholder and drop it. No catalog ever picked the fix up, so all three locales still shipped the literal and rendered{false}as an empty placeholder. Fixed in all three. What was deliberately left alone
"A remote workspace" as a generic noun, meaning a workspace whose files live on another host. That is still what the sidebar badge, the Finder and external-editor guards, and the paste size limits are talking about. Roughly a dozen call sites.
