TELEMETRY/COMMAND/DECOM/DECOMCMD streams were bounded only by the log and TSDB microservices trimming them, so disabled logging, a missing TSDB, or a lagging trimmer let Redis grow without limit. Writes now pass an approximate MINID (OPENC3_STREAM_MAX_AGE_SECONDS, default 600s, never less than two log cycles for raw streams) so the streams stay bounded without a trimmer. - openc3/lib/openc3/topics/topic.rb:74 - SonarQube rubydre:S7865: replaced ENV['OPENC3_STREAM_MAX_AGE_SECONDS'] with ENV.fetch('OPENC3_STREAM_MAX_AGE_SECONDS', nil). Behaviour is unchanged: nil still selects the default.
- openc3/python/openc3/topics/topic.py:121 - SonarQube python:S5806: stopped reassigning the builtin-shadowing `id` and decode into a local `entry_id` instead. The parameter name stays `id`, so positional callers and parity with Ruby are unaffected.
- openc3/python/test/topics/test_topic.py:36,41,60,64,87 - SonarQube python:S8997: replaced direct os.environ assignments with scoped `with patch.dict(os.environ, {...})` blocks. pytest's monkeypatch can't be used in a unittest.TestCase. Every assertion is kept.

AI adversarial reviewNote The fixes from this review are in #4051, a PR into SonarQube had 9 finding(s) on the reviewed commit; the reviewers were asked to fix them. ✅ Claude and Codex converged after 2 turn(s) with 1 fix commit(s). Reviewed commit: Open concerns for a human
Turn-by-turn logTurn 1: Claude (commit e1dbc9269)The stream safety MINID cap is implemented the same way in Ruby and Python. The minid kwarg reaches XADD through both the direct and the queued stores, and redis 5.4 and redis-py both support XADD MINID. I found no correctness defects; the only changes this turn fix all 7 SonarQube findings. I couldn't run the tests or syntax checks here: the sandbox needed approval for those commands, so the edits were checked by reading only.
Turn 2: Codex (no changes)Reviewed the full PR and previous reviewer’s edits; no additional defects found. Ruby/Python behavior is consistent, and all seven listed SonarQube findings are addressed. Tests were not run because dependencies are unavailable.

AI review fixes for #3951
- Pass OPENC3_STREAM_MAX_AGE_SECONDS to the operator in compose.yaml since setting it in .env had no effect - Skip the cap when the TargetModel log cycle lookup fails and retry every LOG_CYCLE_LOOKUP_RETRY_SECONDS instead of caching the default - Raise max ages below STREAM_MAX_AGE_MIN_SECONDS (120s) to the floor so a small value can't wipe a stream on writer clock offset - Raise in write_topic when both maxlen and minid are given - Define LogWriter.CLEANUP_DELAY from Topic.LOG_CLEANUP_DELAY_SECONDS Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Reject non-finite OPENC3_STREAM_MAX_AGE_SECONDS values in both languages.
In Python, float() accepts "nan", "inf", and "1e400". If the value is nan, both seconds <= 0 and seconds < 120 are false, so Line 124 runs int(nan * 1000) and raises ValueError. If the value is inf, Line 124 raises OverflowError. stream_max_age_ms() stores nothing in the cache before it raises. Every later TelemetryTopic, CommandTopic, and decom write then calls it again and raises again, so these microservices stop writing packets.
Ruby has the same failure. "1e400".to_f returns Infinity, and (Infinity * 1000).to_i in Topic.stream_max_age_ms raises FloatDomainError. Ruby converts "nan" and "inf" to 0.0, which disables the cap. Python and Ruby therefore handle the same input differently.
The trigger is an operator typo in one environment variable. The fix is a small, local change: treat non-finite values as invalid in both implementations. Log a warning and fall back to either "disabled" or the default.
🛡️ Proposed fix
try:
- return float(value)
+ seconds = float(value)
except ValueError:
return 0.0
+ if not math.isfinite(seconds):
+ return 0.0
+ return secondsAdd import math at the top of the file. Apply the same check in openc3/lib/openc3/topics/topic.rb:
def self.stream_max_age_seconds
value = ENV.fetch('OPENC3_STREAM_MAX_AGE_SECONDS', nil)
return STREAM_MAX_AGE_DEFAULT_SECONDS if value.nil?
seconds = value.to_f
return 0.0 unless seconds.finite?
return seconds

What
Every write to the high-rate target streams (
TELEMETRY__,COMMAND__,DECOM__,DECOMCMD__) now passes an approximateXADD ... MINID ~ <cutoff>, so Redis/Valkey never keeps entries older than a configurable max age.OPENC3_STREAM_MAX_AGE_SECONDS: default600. Set it to0or empty to disable. Documented inconfiguration/environment.md.TELEMETRY__/COMMAND__, the max age is never less than2 × (log cycle time + LogWriter::CLEANUP_DELAY), which is 1320 s with the default 600 s cycle. The reason: historical streaming reads data that isn't in the bucket yet (the current log file) from the stream. The per-targettlm_log_cycle_time/cmd_log_cycle_timeis read fromTargetModelonce and cached per process.DECOM__/DECOMCMD__use the plain max age. Historical DECOM data comes from TSDB, and TSDB normally keeps 60 s of these streams.*. Decom reuses the raw packet's id, so an entry written by a decom that's running behind is never trimmed by its own add.write_topicin Ruby and Python (store +Topic) takes an optionalminid:keyword. Existing callers are unaffected.Topic,LogWriter, andTsdbMicroservice.Why
Until now these streams were bounded only by their consumers trimming them: the log microservice after it uploads a file, and the TSDB microservice. If logging is disabled (
PacketLogWriter#writereturns early, so no trim offsets are ever queued), TSDB isn't deployed, or a trimmer falls behind, the streams grow without bound until Redis runs out of memory. This cap bounds memory even when no trimmer is running, and it sits well above normal retention so it doesn't change behavior on a healthy system.Tradeoff: a consumer that falls further behind than the cap loses the trimmed entries. That's the intended failure mode, better than taking down Redis. Warning the user when this happens belongs in a separate PR about lag and data-loss alerting.
Testing
spec/topics/topic_spec.rbandtest/topics/test_topic.py: minid math (now-relative, id-relative, min age, disabled), log cycle lookup and caching,write_topicpassingMINIDthrough to XADD (fakeredis confirms old entries are actually trimmed), andTelemetryTopicqueued and unqueued writes.minidargument.bundle exec rspec spec/topics spec/microservices spec/logs spec/api spec/utilities/store*: 643 examples, 1 failure. The failure isdecom_microservice_spec.rb:58, an order-dependent limits-set test that passes on its own and also fails onmain.uv run pytest: 3040 passed.uv run ruff check openc3: clean.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
