test(laya, clef): raise the probability gate above the BF16 reference noise - #1930
Since the CI image moved to TensorRT 11.4.0.106 (#1811), the nightly fails laya (laya-conversation) and clef at the same gate. The native option logits pass (atol=0.125, rtol=0.015), the option probabilities do not (atol=0.002, rtol=0.01):
laya-conversation: ACTUAL [0.248185, 0.278235, 0.278235, 0.195346] DESIRED [0.247458, 0.282703, 0.272236, 0.197603]
clef-flash-outage: ACTUAL [0.834137, 0.165863] DESIRED [0.838944, 0.161056]
clef-outage: ACTUAL [0.044682, 0.088861, 0.866457] DESIRED [0.045314, 0.092977, 0.861709]
Before #1921 the values were identical in every nightly, so this is not flakiness between runs, and clef failed on clef-flash-outage. The nightly of 10-31, the first after #1921 removed the image's cuBLAS preload, fails clef-outage instead: TensorRT's output did not change, the BF16 reference did (see "The reference in the current image" below). I checked whether TensorRT 11.4 computes these models less accurately. It does not. The gate is tighter than the BF16 reference's own error.
Per-layer states against an FP32 forward. I ran the laya reference model with the laya-conversation inputs twice: under BF16 autocast, which is how the test runs it, and in plain FP32 with TF32 disabled. I compared each encoder layer, the head layers and the logits with the FP32 run. TensorRT 11.4's encoder states are at least as close to FP32 as TensorRT 11.1's. All three BF16 paths diverge by the same amount at layer 18 to 19, on rows with very large activations. Largest marker-logit error against the FP32 forward: BF16 reference 0.108, TensorRT 11.1 0.032, TensorRT 11.4 0.077.
Equally valid runs of the reference against its own gate (laya-conversation). Each row is checked with the E2E tolerances against the default BF16 reference:

All laya cases. Over the 20 laya E2E cases that have questions, the efficient and math SDPA backends differ from the default reference by up to 0.0077 (median 0.0014), and the FP32 forward fails the current gate in 3 cases (laya-conversation, laya-multilingual-email, laya-multilingual-batched).
clef-flash-outage. On the failing question, option 0 is 0.836262 in the FP32 forward and 0.838944 in the BF16 reference. TensorRT 11.4 gives 0.834137. That is 0.0021 from the FP32 forward, closer than the reference's 0.0027, but on the other side of it, so it is 0.0048 from the reference. The README records 0.002188 as the largest difference already in the TensorRT 11.1 qualification (#1598).
All Clef cases. I ran every case of both Clef manifests on GB300 with the reference variants, the FP32 forward and TensorRT 11.4 bundles, in the image as it was before #1921, with the CUDA toolkit's cuBLAS preloaded. Largest probability difference from the default BF16 reference:

The efficient and cuDNN SDPA backends have no kernel for these inputs. Outside the two video cases, the reference variants stay within 0.0058. In both video cases, TensorRT 11.4 lands between the BF16 reference and the FP32 forward. On the moving question, option 0 is 0.4455 in the reference, 0.4359 in TensorRT 11.4 and 0.4301 in the FP32 forward for clef-flash-video, and 0.9263, 0.9213 and 0.9161 for clef-video. On clef-flash-video, the reference with the flash SDPA backend also gives 0.4301.
The reference in the current image. Since #1921, the reference runs with the cuBLAS that ships with PyTorch, and on GB300 it now computes different BF16 probabilities for the same inputs, while TensorRT's output is unchanged. On the urgency question of clef-outage, option 2 is 0.8675 in the reference with the preload, 0.8617 in the reference of the 10-31 nightly, 0.8617 in the FP32 forward and 0.8665 in TensorRT 11.4. The reference moved by 0.0058 and is now 0.0002 from the FP32 forward. TensorRT is 0.0047 from the new reference, which the old gate rejects and the new one accepts. In the same nightly, all seven Clef-Flash cases and clef-invoice pass even the old gate.
What the gate must still catch. Scaling the laya logits with another question's temperature moves the probabilities by about 0.14. For Clef, I used two controls on all 14 cases. Reversing the option order moves the probabilities by at least 0.83 and fails every check. Using the head's two log-parameterized logit scales without exp(), a wrong temperature, moves the logits by 0.5 to 1.1 and the probabilities by 0.006 to 0.062. The unchanged logit gate rejects it in all 14 cases, the new probability gate alone in 7, and the old one in all 14.
Exit Criteria
The laya and clef E2E accept engines whose option probabilities are within the BF16 noise of the reference.
The E2E still rejects a wrong temperature and a wrong option mapping. In laya, the new probability gate rejects a wrong temperature by about nine times. In Clef, the unchanged logit gate rejects it in every case.
The logit tolerances, the argmax check, the answer checks and the action-probability check are unchanged.
Non-goal: changing either model's TensorRT network. TensorRT 11.4 is not less accurate than 11.1 here.
Implementation
families/laya/tests/test_e2e.py and families/clef/tests/test_e2e.py: probability gate atol=0.002 to atol=0.015 (rtol=0.01 unchanged), with a comment on why. In laya, 0.015 is about twice the largest difference measured between valid BF16 runs of the reference. In Clef, valid runs differ by up to 0.0058 outside the video cases, 0.0102 on clef-video and 0.0155 on clef-flash-video, where the FP32 forward passes only through rtol.
families/laya/tests/compare_plan.py, families/laya/tests/compare_router.py and families/clef/tests/compare_sequence.py compare native outputs with the reference using the same gate, so they use the same value for option probabilities. compare_plan.py also checks the action head's probabilities with that gate; those keep atol=0.002, because only option probabilities were measured.
families/clef/README.md: the gate description.
Unchanged on purpose: benchmark_compile.py in both families compares torch.compile with eager PyTorch, not TensorRT. compare_response in the laya E2E checks SDK fields such as act_probability, which are saturated at 1.0 on the failing case for the reference, the FP32 forward and both TensorRT plans.

Commands and Results
The measurements above ran on GB300 in the TensorRT 11.4.0.106 development image with the pinned checkpoints. They used one-off scripts that load the SDK model the same way the E2E does. The laya measurements used the inputs of the failing cases. For Clef, a copy of families/clef/tests/test_e2e.py ran every case of both manifests to the end, including the image and video inputs, with bundles from families.clef.cli.build and the family's task probe. Reference variants used torch.nn.attention.sdpa_kernel with the efficient, math, cuDNN and flash backends, wherever each one was available. The FP32 forward ran without autocast and with TF32 disabled. TensorRT 11.1.0.106 and 11.4.0.106 laya plans were built from the same source and run with the family's engine probe on the same inputs.
With atol=0.015, every implementation in the laya table passes, and the wrong-temperature control fails.
Clef with TensorRT 11.4.0.106 on GB300, in the image before fix(ci): let torch references use torch's own cuBLAS #1921, all 14 cases: each passes the logit gate, the new probability gate, the argmax and the answer checks. With the old gate, clef-flash-outage, clef-flash-video and clef-video fail there. This includes the four clef cases that only the nightly runs, which no TensorRT 11.4 nightly has reached yet. Of the reference variants, only the flash SDPA run of clef-flash-video fails, on the unchanged logit gate (see Notes For Future Readers).
ruff check --config ruff.toml on the changed Python files: passed.
Internal premerge on GB300 with TensorRT 11.4.0.106, in the current image, passed on every commit including the head: all 23 laya cases and all 10 clef premerge cases, including laya-conversation, clef-flash-outage, clef-flash-video and the three 27B premerge cases (clef-invoice, clef-outage, clef-receipt).
Dev Community CI on an NVIDIA L4 (AWS g6.4xlarge) with TensorRT 11.4.0.106: all 23 laya cases passed, and 6 of the 7 Clef-Flash cases passed, including clef-flash-outage. clef-flash-video failed the new gate on L4: [0.432063, 0.567937] against [0.455199, 0.544801], a difference of 0.0231, while its logits passed. pytest stopped there, so the three 27B clef cases did not run. That checkpoint does not fit on an L4 (ci(clef): fix offline lookup and defer 27B Community cases #1618), so this lane cannot pass for Clef yet with any tolerance.

Not Run / Remaining Gaps
clef-flash-video passes on GB300, but on L4 it is 0.0231 from the reference, which would fail the old 0.002 gate as well. On L4, TensorRT gives 0.4321 for option 0 of the moving question, 0.0020 from the FP32 forward measured on GB300 (0.4301), and the L4 reference gives 0.4552. I did not run the FP32 forward on L4, and I did not widen the gate for it. It stays an open question for the Community lane once ci(clef): fix offline lookup and defer 27B Community cases #1618 defers the 27B cases.
The four nightly-only clef cases (clef-paid-invoice, clef-healthy-service, clef-multilingual, clef-video) passed in the run above, before fix(ci): let torch references use torch's own cuBLAS #1921, but are not in premerge, so the next nightly is their first run in the current image. TensorRT is within 0.0005 of the FP32 forward on the first three and 0.0052 on clef-video. If the current reference stays within the spread measured above, all four pass the new gate, clef-video with the least margin.
Contributor Self-Review
I have completed a self-review of this change.
Notes For Future Readers
The logit gate is also close to this noise for multilingual laya cases. The math SDPA backend reaches a scaled-logit difference of 0.125 on laya-multilingual-email and laya-multilingual-batched, and it passes only through rtol. If those cases start failing on logits after a TensorRT or PyTorch update, compare them with the FP32 forward before treating it as a regression.
The same holds for clef-flash-video. In logits, the FP32 forward is 0.13 from the default reference, the reference with the flash SDPA backend is 0.16 from it and fails the logit gate, and TensorRT 11.4 is 0.10 from it.
To tell a real regression from BF16 noise in these families, compare against the FP32 forward of the reference, not only against the BF16 reference.
Risk level
Low
Medium
High
The change loosens a test gate. In laya, the new value stays about nine times smaller than the effect of a wrong temperature. In Clef, the probability gate alone catches only half of the wrong-temperature controls, but the unchanged logit gate catches all of them, and a wrong option mapping fails every check.
…noise
The laya and clef E2E compare native option probabilities with the BF16
reference at atol=0.002. Since the TensorRT 11.4 image both fail that
gate while their logits pass.
The reference is not exact at that level. Run with another SDPA backend,
or in FP32, it fails its own gate against the default BF16 run: across the
laya cases the difference reaches 0.008, and the FP32 forward fails three
cases. TensorRT 11.4 lands within that noise (0.006 on laya-conversation,
0.005 on clef-flash-outage) and is no farther from the FP32 forward than
the BF16 reference is. A wrong temperature still moves the probabilities
by about 0.14.
Use atol=0.015 for probabilities in both E2E tests and in the tools that
apply the same gate. Logit tolerances, argmax and answer checks stay as
they are.

Summary
Summary
The Clef and Laya option-probability comparisons use atol=0.015 instead of 0.002. Both retain rtol=0.01. The Clef README documents the updated tolerance. The Laya action-probability comparison retains atol=0.002.
The change aims to accommodate differences between BF16 reference runs and TensorRT outputs. The supplied objectives state that logit tolerances, argmax checks, answer checks, and the action-probability gate remain unchanged.
The author reports that ruff check --config ruff.toml passed. On GB300, all 23 Laya and 10 Clef premerge cases passed on the first commit; premerge is rerunning after the second commit. On L4, all 23 Laya cases and 6 of 7 Clef-Flash cases passed. clef-flash-video failed the probability gate with a difference of 0.0231. Pytest stopped before the three 27B Clef cases ran. Four nightly-only Clef cases passed in a GB300 measurement run, but a nightly pytest run with TensorRT 11.4 has not been reported.
Architecture impact
Family-owned files: The changes affect Clef documentation and Clef and Laya test and comparison tools.
Shared surfaces: The changed files are family-owned. No shared production code change is identified.
Dependency directions: No new dependency direction is identified.
Affected consumers: Clef and Laya tests and comparison tools use the wider option-probability tolerance. The Laya action-probability comparison retains its prior tolerance.
Unresolved blast-radius questions: The L4 clef-flash-video failure remains unresolved. The three 27B Clef cases did not run in that lane. Nightly pytest results with TensorRT 11.4 are not available for the four nightly-only Clef cases.
Review outcome: HUMAN REVIEW REQUIRED. The repository review contract requires this outcome when evidence cannot resolve a material specification or coverage question. The available results include an L4 failure and do not cover all identified cases.
The Clef and Laya probability comparisons now use an absolute tolerance of 0.015, up from 0.002. The relative tolerance remains 0.01. Laya retains 0.002 for act_logits. The Clef README and test comments describe numerical variation related to the thresholds.

Summary
Update probability comparison thresholds families/clef/README.md, families/clef/tests/*, families/laya/tests/*
Probability comparisons use atol=0.015 and retain rtol=0.01, except Laya act_logits, which uses atol=0.002. The Clef README documents the BF16 probability threshold. Test comments describe numerical variation.
The broader Clef probability threshold still needs substantiation across the cases it governs before merge. The Laya action-probability concern has been fixed.

np.testing.assert_allclose now uses atol=0.015, rtol=0.01 for every score in every manifest case. The two Clef manifests cover both checkpoints and seven cases each, but the reported BF16-reference measurement covers only clef-flash-outage. Measure reference variation across both checkpoints and all cases, and add a known-regression control before adopting this family-wide gate. Apply the same evidence to the E2E test and README threshold.

Review comment at @families/laya/tests/compare_plan.py at line 93:
Update the softmax comparison loop in the test to use an absolute tolerance of
0.002 for act_logits and 0.015 for option logits, while keeping the relative
tolerance unchanged.

compare_plan.py checks the option logits and the action logits with one
softmax gate, so raising it to 0.015 also loosened the action
probabilities. Only the option probabilities were measured against the
BF16 reference noise, so the action head keeps atol=0.002.

Measured on every case of both Clef manifests, the BF16 reference is up to
0.006 from its FP32 forward, and up to 0.016 on the two video cases, not a
few thousandths as the comment and the README said.

Background
Since the CI image moved to TensorRT 11.4.0.106 (#1811), the nightly fails
laya(laya-conversation) andclefat the same gate. The native option logits pass (atol=0.125, rtol=0.015), the option probabilities do not (atol=0.002, rtol=0.01):Before #1921 the values were identical in every nightly, so this is not flakiness between runs, and clef failed on
clef-flash-outage. The nightly of 10-31, the first after #1921 removed the image's cuBLAS preload, failsclef-outageinstead: TensorRT's output did not change, the BF16 reference did (see "The reference in the current image" below). I checked whether TensorRT 11.4 computes these models less accurately. It does not. The gate is tighter than the BF16 reference's own error.Per-layer states against an FP32 forward. I ran the laya reference model with the
laya-conversationinputs twice: under BF16 autocast, which is how the test runs it, and in plain FP32 with TF32 disabled. I compared each encoder layer, the head layers and the logits with the FP32 run. TensorRT 11.4's encoder states are at least as close to FP32 as TensorRT 11.1's. All three BF16 paths diverge by the same amount at layer 18 to 19, on rows with very large activations. Largest marker-logit error against the FP32 forward: BF16 reference 0.108, TensorRT 11.1 0.032, TensorRT 11.4 0.077.Equally valid runs of the reference against its own gate (
laya-conversation). Each row is checked with the E2E tolerances against the default BF16 reference:Whether a build passes depends on BF16 rounding. The 11.1 debug plan fails, and the 11.4 debug plan passes.
All laya cases. Over the 20 laya E2E cases that have questions, the efficient and math SDPA backends differ from the default reference by up to 0.0077 (median 0.0014), and the FP32 forward fails the current gate in 3 cases (
laya-conversation,laya-multilingual-email,laya-multilingual-batched).clef-flash-outage.

Outside the two video cases, the reference variants stay within 0.0058. In both video cases, TensorRT 11.4 lands between the BF16 reference and the FP32 forward. On the
movingquestion, option 0 is 0.4455 in the reference, 0.4359 in TensorRT 11.4 and 0.4301 in the FP32 forward forclef-flash-video, and 0.9263, 0.9213 and 0.9161 forclef-video. Onclef-flash-video, the reference with the flash SDPA backend also gives 0.4301.The reference in the current image. Since #1921, the reference runs with the cuBLAS that ships with PyTorch, and on GB300 it now computes different BF16 probabilities for the same inputs, while TensorRT's output is unchanged. On the
urgencyquestion ofclef-outage, option 2 is 0.8675 in the reference with the preload, 0.8617 in the reference of the 10-31 nightly, 0.8617 in the FP32 forward and 0.8665 in TensorRT 11.4. The reference moved by 0.0058 and is now 0.0002 from the FP32 forward. TensorRT is 0.0047 from the new reference, which the old gate rejects and the new one accepts. In the same nightly, all seven Clef-Flash cases andclef-invoicepass even the old gate. What the gate must still catch. Scaling the laya logits with another question's temperature moves the probabilities by about 0.14. For Clef, I used two controls on all 14 cases. Reversing the option order moves the probabilities by at least 0.83 and fails every check. Using the head's two log-parameterized logit scales without
exp(), a wrong temperature, moves the logits by 0.5 to 1.1 and the probabilities by 0.006 to 0.062. The unchanged logit gate rejects it in all 14 cases, the new probability gate alone in 7, and the old one in all 14.Exit Criteria

families/clef/tests/test_e2e.pyran every case of both manifests to the end, including the image and video inputs, with bundles fromfamilies.clef.cli.buildand the family's task probe. Reference variants usedtorch.nn.attention.sdpa_kernelwith the efficient, math, cuDNN and flash backends, wherever each one was available. The FP32 forward ran without autocast and with TF32 disabled. TensorRT 11.1.0.106 and 11.4.0.106 laya plans were built from the same source and run with the family's engine probe on the same inputs.atol=0.015, every implementation in the laya table passes, and the wrong-temperature control fails.clef-flash-outage,clef-flash-videoandclef-videofail there. This includes the fourclefcases that only the nightly runs, which no TensorRT 11.4 nightly has reached yet. Of the reference variants, only the flash SDPA run ofclef-flash-videofails, on the unchanged logit gate (see Notes For Future Readers).ruff check --config ruff.tomlon the changed Python files: passed.laya-conversation,clef-flash-outage,clef-flash-videoand the three 27B premerge cases (clef-invoice,clef-outage,clef-receipt).clef-flash-outage.clef-flash-videofailed the new gate on L4:[0.432063, 0.567937]against[0.455199, 0.544801], a difference of 0.0231, while its logits passed. pytest stopped there, so the three 27Bclefcases did not run. That checkpoint does not fit on an L4 (ci(clef): fix offline lookup and defer 27B Community cases #1618), so this lane cannot pass for Clef yet with any tolerance.Hardware, Environment, and Revisions

clef-flash-videopasses on GB300, but on L4 it is 0.0231 from the reference, which would fail the old 0.002 gate as well. On L4, TensorRT gives 0.4321 for option 0 of themovingquestion, 0.0020 from the FP32 forward measured on GB300 (0.4301), and the L4 reference gives 0.4552. I did not run the FP32 forward on L4, and I did not widen the gate for it. It stays an open question for the Community lane once ci(clef): fix offline lookup and defer 27B Community cases #1618 defers the 27B cases.clefcases (clef-paid-invoice,clef-healthy-service,clef-multilingual,clef-video) passed in the run above, before fix(ci): let torch references use torch's own cuBLAS #1921, but are not in premerge, so the next nightly is their first run in the current image. TensorRT is within 0.0005 of the FP32 forward on the first three and 0.0052 onclef-video. If the current reference stays within the spread measured above, all four pass the new gate,clef-videowith the least margin.Contributor Self-Review
Notes For Future Readers
laya-multilingual-emailandlaya-multilingual-batched, and it passes only throughrtol. If those cases start failing on logits after a TensorRT or PyTorch update, compare them with the FP32 forward before treating it as a regression.clef-flash-video. In logits, the FP32 forward is 0.13 from the default reference, the reference with the flash SDPA backend is 0.16 from it and fails the logit gate, and TensorRT 11.4 is 0.10 from it.Risk level
The change loosens a test gate. In laya, the new value stays about nine times smaller than the effect of a wrong temperature. In Clef, the probability gate alone catches only half of the wrong-temperature controls, but the unchanged logit gate catches all of them, and a wrong option mapping fails every check.
