Outcome

Pi is now a shipped NemoClaw agent. nemoclaw onboard --agent pi, NEMOCLAW_AGENT=pi, a resumed session, and the interactive agent menu select Pi and onboard it from its published managed image on native Linux with Docker. Before this change, Pi was a release candidate behind NEMOCLAW_CANDIDATE_AGENTS and a checked-in qualification receipt, and its images were published outside the all-agent release cohort.

Reason

The accepted Pi scope decision allows Pi only on Docker on native Linux, requires every other combination to fail before any sandbox is created, and requires Pi to release in one complete cohort with evidence from the released commit. The candidate gate, the receipt authority, and the separate candidate publication lanes existed only until activation. Native Podman later shipped for the other three agents, so without an explicit limit a shipped Pi would also onboard on Podman, macOS, and WSL.

Resolves #8818
Part of #7923

Changes

  • Image contract and selection: SHIPPED_MANAGED_IMAGE_AGENTS gains pi. Pi is managed-image-only: onboarding refuses a custom --from Dockerfile and never falls back to the repository Dockerfile when the catalog is unavailable. The candidate gate, src/lib/agent/candidate*.ts, the ci/pi-agent-qualification-v1-*.json receipts, the receipt-refresh repository check, tools/managed-images/collect-pi-qualification.mts, test/e2e/support/pi-qualification-collection.test.ts, and tools/managed-images/validate-candidate-contract.mts are removed.
  • Host limit (new manifest field): host_os lists the host operating systems an agent supports; absence keeps every host. Pi declares linux. resolveAgent enforces it for explicit and resumed selections, and selectOnboardAgent filters the interactive agent menu through requireAgentHostOsSupported before prompting, so macOS, Windows, and WSL hide Pi from the interactive menu and refuse explicit Pi selections. Covered by src/lib/agent/host-os.test.ts, src/lib/agent/pi-lifecycle.test.ts, and src/lib/onboard/agent-selection.test.ts.
  • Runtime limit (new provider field): runtime providers declare the managed-image agents their qualification covers. Docker lists all four shipped agents; Podman lists the agents its activation qualified, so onboarding and rebuild refuse Pi on Podman before mutation. Registration validates the list, and activation requires it to equal the qualified activation agents. Covered by the workload-source, rebuild, registry, and activation tests.
  • Publication and startup: base-image.yaml passes Pi's base contract to managed-images.yaml. Pi builds in the PR image lanes (AMD64 and ARM64) and the release lanes (AMD64 and ARM64), the promotion barrier requires eight images, and Pi's pointers move with the cohort. The former candidate-lane runtime and declared-entrypoint checks move into scripts/checks/validate-pi-managed-image.sh, which both lanes run; the PR lane also asserts that the Pi image ships no MCP discovery runtime. agents/pi/start.sh skips re-running merge_corporate_proxy_ca when NEMOCLAW_MANAGED_STARTUP_APPLIED=1 so the root-applied corporate CA bundle from managed startup is preserved (test/security/corporate-ca-runtime-merge.test.ts). The reviewed direct-image runtime bundle is regenerated.
  • E2E: the Pi lifecycle target onboards from the catalog built for the commit under test instead of a receipt catalog. The managed-image activation test covers Pi on Docker and keeps the Podman run on the Podman activation agents alongside external-image verification.
  • Architecture budget: isWsl moves to src/lib/core/wsl.ts and is wrapped in a local function in src/lib/platform.ts so the host check does not raise the platform module's fan-in limit while platform.isWsl stays writable for CommonJS callers.
  • Documentation and guidance: the Pi pages drop the release-candidate wording and document the host, interactive menu, and runtime refusals; the platform matrix gains a Pi row (Tested with limitations); the README, docs home, cohort statements, agents list output, E2E README, runtime-provider references, and release references cover Pi.

Review notes

  • Documentation review: the single independent documentation review of the staged tree returned Verdict: PASS (Result: docs-updated, agent_id=425be3f6). All five suggestions (README.md, docs/reference/commands.mdx, docs/reference/architecture.mdx, docs/get-started/quickstart-pi.mdx, docs/reference/pi-support.mdx, docs/manage-sandboxes/run-pi.mdx, and test/e2e/README.md) were applied and validated with npm run docs before committing.
  • Live E2E evidence:
    • The Pi image-source parity assertion is removed. It bound image inputs to a receipt revision, and images now come from the commit under test; the automatic stock-receipt assertion binds the onboarded image to that cohort.
    • The Pi registry workload assertion is removed as a duplicate of the host client's automatic stock-receipt assertion after onboarding, which checks the agent, managed-image authority, reference, source revision, and cohort.
    • A precondition assertion requires the selected cohort, so the automatic receipt assertion cannot be skipped. ci/e2e-assertion-budget.json records the lower counts.
  • Rollout: after merge, E2E runs need a four-agent publication from main; three-agent cohorts fail validation, as with earlier agent additions.
  • Outside this change: ARM64 has image build, entrypoint startup, and publication evidence but no lifecycle target, which remains a scope decision; the protected multi-architecture and GPU local-inference lanes run the trusted controller from main and do not build Pi yet; the starter prompt still lists three agents because its pinned prompt assets need a separate repin.

Pi now ships as a Linux-and-Docker-only agent. On macOS or WSL, the interactive menu still shows Pi. Choosing it stops onboarding with an unsupported-host error, so no sandbox is created or changed. This is a usability issue and is safe to merge with a follow-up.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Hide host-unqualified agents from the interactive picker.

getAgentChoices() lists every manifest. It does not apply the hostOs qualification. On a macOS or WSL host, the menu offers Pi. After the user selects Pi, resolveAgent throws Agent 'pi' is supported only on native Linux hosts. Onboarding then ends after the user makes a valid-looking choice. README.md Line 40 makes this reachable. It tells WSL express users to enter n to choose Pi.

Filter the choices with requireAgentHostOsSupported before the menu shows them. Keep the explicit --agent/session refusal as the fail-closed path.

## Outcome

Pi qualification can use immutable images whose source matches the

The three-file diff preserves Pi candidate status, dependency versions,
Linux AMD64/Docker qualification scope, NVIDIA hosted inference,
image-input selection, and every qualification assertion. No receipt
from #12382 is reused: its dependency-upgrade source and cohort differ.
Open PRs were checked for a focused duplicate; #12396 adds
supported-agent scope and #12382 changes dependencies.

## Verification

Candidate: `14e10676ff003648ed03303338c487325d6b9e18`.

- Existing candidate authority, qualified candidate, receipt refresh,
runtime artifact, and qualification event tests: **5 files, 78 tests
passed** (`vitest run --project cli --project integration --project
e2e-support` with the five selected files).
- `node --import tsx
scripts/checks/pi-qualification-receipt-refresh.mts`: passed on the
committed candidate.
- Exact publication artifacts: archive SHA-256 values match GitHub
metadata; both committed receipts equal their downloaded `contract.json`
bytes. AMD64 archive
`d6a029ac0328f64eeeb94e8cfcc96daa99799d47924c0facd18ced9dfb39d0e8`;
ARM64 archive
`f9d863f1a449bf6b2a88dd79d19ebab6ea5cd18f56fa6d08c34d8238fcca060c`.
- Source parity: all 26 selected image paths match the publication
source; the old source returns exit 1 and the refreshed source returns
exit 0.
- Assertion audit: 203 predicate rows traced through receipt validation,
onboarding, all three read-tool scenarios, real PTY inference, native
state, rebuild, restart recovery, security, evidence, and cleanup. Full
runtime evidence passed on the exact final candidate; no assertions
changed.
- Normal pre-commit and commit-message hooks passed, including
repository checks, secret scanning, and growth guardrails. Normal
pre-push publication validation and all three compiler checks passed.
- [PR CI](https://github.com/NVIDIA/NemoClaw/actions/runs/37568807736):
passed.
[Advisor](https://github.com/NVIDIA/NemoClaw/actions/runs/37570015246):
all nine exact-head specialist reviews clear; blocker gate passed.
- [Exact PR image
prerequisite](https://github.com/NVIDIA/NemoClaw/actions/runs/37568807697):
passed, including both native Pi architecture validations and
Docker/rootless Podman activation. Its three shipped-agent contract
archives were verified against artifact metadata and the exact PR
head/cohort.
- Focused trusted-main exact-head GitHub E2E
(`jobs=pi-agent-qualification`, `gateway_runtimes=docker`,
`inference_mode=public-nvidia`): **passed**: [workflow
37571476855](https://github.com/NVIDIA/NemoClaw/actions/runs/37571476855),
[Pi target
job](https://github.com/NVIDIA/NemoClaw/actions/runs/37571476855/job/112631856957),
and [Relevant E2E
gate](https://github.com/NVIDIA/NemoClaw/actions/runs/37571476855/job/112632788964).
[The first
dispatch](https://github.com/NVIDIA/NemoClaw/actions/runs/37568859569)
stopped before planning because the exact PR image workflow was still
running. Its full prerequisite and downstream logs were inspected; no Pi
resources were created. The current run followed verified prerequisite
success, with the candidate unchanged.
- [Qualification evidence artifact
11460609789](https://github.com/NVIDIA/NemoClaw/actions/runs/37571476855/artifacts/11460609789):
exact CLI/image/source/cohort/receipt identity; receipt/source parity;
immutable-image onboarding with zero Dockerfile builds; real PTY
inference; all three exact read-tool proofs passed on their first
attempts; native settings and JSONL sessions survived rebuild; sandbox
and gateway restart recovery, personal profiles, policy denial, and
credential/socket isolation passed. Archive SHA-256
`ff12d31bf47361b31f1bb582eb8e8de87e9409ed3e4bf7443f4d7fb4aa118ed0`
matches GitHub metadata.
- Cleanup: sandbox destroy and absence checks passed; all four
registered cleanup actions passed with no failures (host sandbox,
OpenShell sandbox, gateway, Docker build guard). Evidence
manifest/upload and Docker auth cleanup passed.
- The diff contains no secrets, API keys, or credentials.

Skip re-merging the corporate proxy CA in `agents/pi/start.sh` when
`NEMOCLAW_MANAGED_STARTUP_APPLIED=1`, filter interactive onboarding
agent choices by host OS qualification, keep `platform.isWsl` writable
for CommonJS callers, refresh the reviewed direct startup runtime
bundle, and resolve conflicts with `main`.
