Stacked on #1646.

A connection can now stream its CloudWatch metrics to Maple. AWS pushes them; Maple reads nothing back from the account.

How it works

  1. Connection: metric_stream: { regions, namespaces } on create and PATCH (null turns it off). Regions are validated, and namespaces come from a fixed list (ECS, Container Insights, ALB, NLB, RDS, Lambda, SQS, EC2, DynamoDB, API Gateway).

  2. Setup: the setup script deploys maple-metrics-<id> in each chosen region, then removes it from every other enabled region. The cleanup script removes it everywhere. Each stack holds:

    • a CloudWatch metric stream in the OpenTelemetry 1.0 format, filtered to the namespaces;
    • a Firehose HTTP endpoint delivery stream to {MAPLE_INGEST_PUBLIC_URL}/v1/firehose/aws/{id}, gzip, 60 s buffering;
    • the IAM roles for the stream and for Firehose, trusted only from the customer's own account;
    • an encrypted, private S3 bucket for failed batches, expiring after 7 days.
  3. Secret: each connection has its own stream secret. Like the GCP connector secret, it is stored encrypted and looked up by its HMAC hash. Connections made before streams get one on their next setup. The template takes it as a NoEcho parameter, so it is never written into the template; the script passes it.

  4. Ingest: POST /v1/firehose/aws/{connection_id} (new aws_metric_stream.rs plus the handler in main.rs) mirrors the GCP push path:

    • Auth: the X-Amz-Firehose-Access-Key header is checked against the stored hash, with positive and negative caches.
    • Order: paused source, per-org limit, entitlement check, then decoding the gzip, JSON, base64 and length-delimited ExportMetricsServiceRequest messages.
    • Responses: Firehose's {requestId, timestamp} JSON. Undecodable data gets a 200 and is counted as data loss, because a retry would never succeed. Data that decodes past the size limit gets a 413, the one status Firehose doesn't retry.
    • Health: written to the connection at most once a minute.
  5. Conversion: the native metrics pipeline drops Summary metrics, which is all CloudWatch sends. So each point becomes aws.<namespace>.<metric>:

    • aws.<namespace>.<metric> as an average gauge (sum ÷ count);
    • .min and .max gauges;
    • .sum and .count delta sums.

    Dimensions become aws.dimension.<Name>. service.name comes from ServiceName, FunctionName, DBInstanceIdentifier, LoadBalancer, QueueName or InstanceId, and cloud.platform is set for ECS, Lambda and EC2. For example, AWS/ECS CPUUtilization becomes aws.ecs.cpu_utilization.

The web UI for choosing regions and namespaces, and the /infra/aws page, come in the next PR. The designs are in Wonder.

Verification

  • Ingest: 10 converter tests, covering name rules, summary expansion, attributes, grouping and envelope decoding. 3 handler tests: a malformed ID is refused before Postgres; a gzipped body with two records of two messages each lands as rows in the gauge and sum tables, with an unreadable record acked; and the decoded-size limit returns 413. Existing GCP logpush tests still pass.
  • Backend:
    • the stream secret matches the stored hash, and stays the same across setups;
    • a connection without a secret gets one, once;
    • the template's filters, endpoint and NoEcho parameter are correct;
    • turning the stream off leaves a setup that only removes the stacks.
  • API: a bad region and an empty namespace list are both 400.
  • CloudFormation: the metrics template passes cfn-lint for us-east-1 and eu-central-1.
  • Scripts: the rendered setup, setup-without-stream and cleanup scripts pass bash -n and shellcheck.
  • End to end on this PR's preview (full preview label, ingest deployed):
    • Created a connection with metric_stream {us-east-1, AWS/ECS} over the v2 API. The setup's template points its Firehose at https://ingest-pr-1680.maple.dev/v1/firehose/aws/<uuid>, and the script carries the 42-character maple_aws_… secret.
    • Posted a gzipped Firehose body with one record holding two length-delimited OpenTelemetry 1.0 ExportMetricsServiceRequests: amazonaws.com/AWS/ECS/CPUUtilization summaries for two ECS services (count 4, sum 172, min 31, max 55). The response was 200 {requestId, timestamp}; a wrong key got 401 with errorMessage.
    • Seconds later the connection showed metrics_last_received_at set and no error. /v2/metrics listed aws.ecs.cpu_utilization (43), .min (31), .max (55), .sum (172) and .count (4) for both e2e-payments-api and e2e-checkout-api.
    • The connection was then deleted.
  • Real AWS (account 465760687006, against this PR's preview):
    • The setup script from GET /setup deployed both stacks in us-east-1 with no errors; all five metrics-stack resources reached CREATE_COMPLETE.
    • check verified the role, which trusts only maple-integrations-pr-1680.
    • About 5 minutes after the stack was created: metric stream running; Firehose DeliveryToHttpEndpoint.Success and DeliveryToHttpEndpoint.Records were 2, then 3 per minute; 0 objects in the failed-deliveries bucket; metrics_last_received_at set with no error.
    • Maple showed aws.ecs.{cpu,memory}_utilization, {cpu,memory}_reservation and live_task_count (each with .min/.max/.sum/.count) for the account's real ECS services: maple-ingest-ec2 12.2% CPU, maple-scraper 41.2% memory, maple-electric, maple-otel-collector and the preview services.
    • The cleanup script deleted both stacks, emptying the bucket first. No stack, role, metric stream or delivery stream is left.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Connect AWS CloudWatch metrics to Maple by selecting regions and metric namespaces. Setup guidance and delivery status are available for configured streams.
    • AWS setup now provides the regional configuration needed to deploy metric streams, and disconnecting stops Maple from accepting their metrics.
    • Investigation and pull request review sessions can use code execution to make batches of permitted, read-only tool calls. Local reviews and evaluation runs support code-mode options.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the AWS integration guide with metric-stream setup, cost estimates, and instructions for stopping streams.

A connection can ask for a metric stream: regions and CloudWatch namespaces.
The setup deploys a maple-metrics stack per region (metric stream in the
OpenTelemetry 1.0 format, a Firehose posting to ingest, its roles, and a
bucket for failed batches) and removes it from every other region.

Ingest gets POST /v1/firehose/aws/{connection_id}, authenticated by a
per-connection stream secret (stored encrypted, looked up by its hash). It
turns each CloudWatch summary into an average, min and max gauge and delta
sum and count rows, since the native pipeline drops summaries, and records
the stream's health on the connection.

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 8/10 · likely safe to merge
One real defect in the metrics CloudFormation template; the new ingest route, its auth lookup, metering and the additive migration all checked out.
1 warning −1 · tests covered · risk high −1 · 3/3 new units observable

Adds CloudWatch metric streams as an AWS ingest path: a Firehose receiver that converts OTLP summary points, a per-connection encrypted stream secret, and a per-region metric stream stack. Safe to merge once the metrics stack's S3 bucket can actually be deleted.

  • POST /v1/firehose/aws/{connection_id} receives Firehose deliveries and stores CloudWatch summaries as gauges and delta sums
  • AwsConnectionService mints an encrypted stream secret and renders a metric stream stack per region
  • metric_stream (regions, namespaces) joins the v2 connection schema and the aws_connections row
  • Setup and cleanup scripts deploy and remove the per-region metric stream stacks

The template's bucket has no DeletionPolicy, and CloudFormation cannot delete a stack whose S3 bucket holds objects; with S3BackupMode: FailedDataOnly any failed Firehose batch puts one there. aws cloudformation wait stack-delete-complete (setup.ts:245, and :317 for cleanup) then exits non-zero, so under set -euo pipefail a cleanup leaves the role that trusts Maple in place and a dropped region leaves the remaining streams running and billing.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds AWS CloudWatch metric-stream configuration, regional stack setup, and a Firehose ingestion endpoint. The endpoint authenticates deliveries, converts CloudWatch Summary points into metrics, stores accepted metrics, and records delivery status.

Changes: AWS Metric Stream

Layer / File(s) Summary
Metric-stream contracts and persistence
packages/primitives/src/index.ts, packages/domain/src/aws.ts, packages/domain/src/http/v2/integrations-aws.ts, packages/db/drizzle/..., packages/db/src/tables/aws-connections.ts
Adds schemas for supported regions and metric namespaces, stream settings and status fields, deterministic metric-stack names, and database columns for stream configuration, encrypted credentials, and delivery status.
Stream credentials and regional stack setup
packages/backend/src/services/integrations/AwsConnectionService.ts, packages/backend/src/services/integrations/aws/setup.ts, packages/backend/src/services/integrations/AwsConnectionService.test.ts, packages/backend/src/services/integrations/aws/setup.test.ts
The connection service creates, encrypts, stores, and retrieves stream secrets. Setup generates regional CloudFormation templates and scripts to deploy configured stream stacks and remove stacks from other enabled regions. Tests cover secret handling and stack cleanup behavior.
Firehose parsing and metric conversion
apps/ingest/src/aws_metric_stream.rs, apps/ingest/src/lib.rs
Adds bounded Firehose delivery parsing and OTLP conversion for CloudWatch Summary points. The output includes average, min, and max gauges when available, plus delta sum and count metrics. Tests cover parsing, metric attributes, grouping, and size limits.
Firehose endpoint and connection resolution
apps/ingest/src/main.rs
Adds a Firehose route that validates connection IDs and credentials, resolves connection routing and source state, checks entitlements, and stores converted metrics. It records delivery health and covers accepted, unreadable, and oversized deliveries.
API integration and stream documentation
apps/api/src/routes/v2/integrations-aws.http.ts, apps/api/src/routes/v2/integrations-aws.http.test.ts, apps/web/src/page/integrations/aws.scene.test.ts, apps/web/src/page/sources/detail/detail.scene.test.ts, apps/web/src/page/sources/kit/integration.ts, apps/landing/src/content/docs/integrations/aws.md
The API accepts metric-stream settings and returns stream configuration, delivery status, and setup templates. Tests cover response fields and invalid settings. AWS documentation describes stream deployment and cleanup, and web fixtures include the added response fields.

… stream stack

CloudFormation cannot delete a bucket that holds objects, and failed Firehose
batches land in it, so removing a region or cleaning up would stop with the
stack half deleted. The scripts empty it first, and once more on a retry.

🟢 Confidence 9/10 · safe to merge
The bucket-emptying helper covers every delete path and is safe, but the fix's shell logic rests only on an untested script assertion.
1 note · tests partial −1 · risk medium

The fix commit makes delete_metrics_stack empty each stack's failed-delivery bucket before deleting it, and routes region removal, failed-deploy recovery and cleanup through that one helper. F1 is resolved and the rest of setup.ts is sound.

  • delete_metrics_stack empties the FailedDeliveries bucket, then deletes the stack, retrying twice
  • removeMetricsStacks uses that helper for region removal and cleanup

🔵 Note · F2 · Bucket emptying in delete_metrics_stack has no test

tests · packages/backend/src/services/integrations/aws/setup.ts:248

Nothing pins the aws s3 rm that makes stack deletion work: AwsConnectionService.test.ts asserts the region loop and the describe-regions removal, but not that the scripts empty FailedDeliveries before delete-stack. A later edit to this helper silently brings back the stuck-stack bug, so add the same kind of script assertion the file already uses, e.g. assert.include(deleted.cleanupScript, "s3 rm").

Pins that a metric stream's bucket is emptied before every stack delete, that
a failed delete is retried, and that a cleanup stops before the role's stack
when a stream's stack cannot be deleted.

F2: added in 62955b6 as behavior tests, not a string check. aws/setup.test.ts feeds the rendered scripts to bash against a fake aws CLI that logs every call, following the pattern of the GCP setup-script tests. It checks three cases:

  • A cleanup where the first stack delete fails empties the bucket, deletes, waits, then does all three again, and removes the role's stack last.
  • A cleanup that can't delete a stream's stack exits non-zero before touching the role's stack.
  • A setup without a stream removes it from every region that still has it, and leaves the other regions alone.

With the s3 rm line removed, two of the three fail.

The only change since the last review folds delete-stack into the retry condition, and the new script test runs the rendered cleanup against a fake aws to pin it.
no findings · tests covered · risk low

Puts cloudformation delete-stack inside the metric-stack retry condition so a refused request re-empties the bucket and retries, with a new bash-level test covering it. Nothing in the change breaks the setup or cleanup scripts.

  • deleteMetricsStackFunction retries when delete-stack itself fails, not only when the waiter does
  • New test runs the rendered cleanup against a fake aws that refuses the first delete

Auth, secret hashing, shell quoting and the Summary expansion are pinned by behavioural tests; only the dimension-key casing is off.

Adds CloudWatch metric streaming: a per-region Firehose stack in the customer account posts OTLP metrics to a new HMAC-authenticated ingest endpoint that expands Summary points into gauges and delta sums. Careful and well tested; one attribute-naming inconsistency.

  • metric_stream regions/namespaces on AWS connections, validated against a fixed namespace list
  • Setup deploys a per-region Firehose stack carrying a per-connection stream secret
  • New POST /v1/firehose/aws/{id} ingest endpoint authenticating on the hashed access key
  • Summary points expand into aws.<ns>.<metric> gauges and delta sums

Every CloudWatch dimension becomes an attribute key with a CamelCase last segment (aws.dimension.ServiceName, aws.dimension.ClusterName), while the neighbouring keys this converter emits are snake_case (aws.metric_name, aws.metric_namespace) and so are the org's other attribute keys. Dashboards and saved filters then have to spell mixed case for CloudWatch while using snake_case for everything else.

Snake-case the dimension name before building the key, e.g. `attribute(&format!("aws.dimension.{}", snake_case(name)), value)`, and update the two assertions in `aws_metric_stream.rs` that expect `aws.dimension.ClusterName` / `aws.dimension.ServiceName`.

The new Firehose auth path is exercised by handler and service tests; the one gap is that a disabled stream's secret keeps authenticating.
1 warning −1 · tests covered · risk high −1 · 2/2 new units observable

Adds a per-connection CloudWatch metric stream: a per-region CloudFormation stack feeding /v1/firehose/aws/{id} through Firehose, a converter that expands Summary points into gauges and delta sums, and a stored stream secret. Safe to merge apart from one gap where a turned-off stream keeps ingesting.

  • metric_stream on create/update mints and stores an encrypted stream secret plus its HMAC hash
  • renderAwsSetupScript deploys one metric-stack per region and deletes stacks elsewhere

Clear streamSecretHash in the same update (a re-enable mints a fresh secret) or add c.metric_stream IS NOT NULL to the receiver's lookup.

Add `...(patch.metricStream === null && { streamSecretHash: null })` to `changes` so a disabled stream's stored hash stops matching, and let `withStreamSecret` mint a new one when the stream is turned back on.

past 20,000 points the delivery is refused as too large (413).

Adds a per-delivery point cap and drops empty resources before decoding is stored, plus an org-isolation test for the v2 AWS routes. The cap is sound, but the empty-resource filter leaves one amplification path open.

correctness · apps/ingest/src/aws_metric_stream.rs:129-138

The retain only drops resources whose scope_metrics list is empty, so a resource padding itself with ScopeMetrics::default() (0x0a 0x02 0x0a 0x00, 4 input bytes) is kept: it has no metrics, so point_count adds 0 and the MAX_POINTS_PER_DELIVERY cap never fires, yet every one of those 4 bytes is retained as a ResourceMetrics plus a ScopeMetrics struct and held in requests until build_metrics_request returns. A 20 MiB gzip body of them decompresses to ~120 MiB of records, which is tens of millions of retained structs and gigabytes of memory per request — the same amplification the zero-length-request fix closed, left open one nesting level deeper. Filter empty scope metrics too, so a delivery keeps only what carries a metric.

Retain only resources that carry at least one metric, and drop the empty `ScopeMetrics` inside them first:
```rust
for resource in &mut request.resource_metrics {
    resource.scope_metrics.retain(|scope| !scope.metrics.is_empty());
}
request
    .resource_metrics
    .retain(|resource| !resource.scope_metrics.is_empty());
