Stacked on #1635.

Deploys now create Maple's own AWS identity for the AWS integration, instead of someone creating an IAM user by hand and copying its key into the secret store.

  • packages/infra/src/aws/integration-principal.ts declares an IAM user (maple-integrations, -eu, -pr-<n>) whose only permission is sts:AssumeRole on arn:aws:iam::*:role/MapleIntegration-*, and an access key for it.
  • The user's ARN, key id and secret go straight into the env of api and alerting (MapleStackContext.awsPrincipal), the same way api's VCS_SYNC_HOP_SECRET is bound today. Nobody handles the key.
  • New profile flag deploys.awsIntegrationPrincipal: on for prd, prd-eu and every PR preview (preview:web included, so AWS connections can be tested there), off for dev, which keeps the shared dev user from .env.local.
  • The role name prefix is now AWS_ROLE_NAME_PREFIX in @maple/domain/aws, shared by the connection names and this policy.

Each instance trusts its own user, so a customer stack set up on a preview only works with that preview, and US and EU stay separate.

Things to know

  • The secret is kept in alchemy state, like the VCS hop secret. Anyone who can read deploy state can read it.
  • To rotate the key, rename the AccessKey resource and deploy. Alchemy creates the new key and deletes the old one.
  • If alchemy ever holds the key without its secret (AWS returns it only on create), the secret is bound blank. A blank secret reads as unset, so AWS shows as unavailable instead of failing every check.

Verification

  • Deployed the two resources for real as a throwaway alchemy stack in Maple's AWS account (465760687006):
    • the user and key were created, and the key signs in (sts get-caller-identity);
    • the key gets AccessDenied on anything else (iam:ListUsers);
    • simulate-principal-policy allows sts:AssumeRole on MapleIntegration-abc and denies it on any other role;
    • a second deploy planned no changes and kept the secret;
    • alchemy destroy deleted the key and the user, and AWS no longer has the user.
  • tsrs -p tsconfig.alchemy.json, typecheck of infra, api, alerting and domain, lint with .oxlintrc.effect.json, infra tests (profile snapshot updated for the new flag), AWS connection service tests.
  • On this PR's preview (preview:web):
    • the deploy created maple-integrations-pr-1646 with its policy and one active key;
    • api and alerting both have the key ID, the principal ARN and the secret bound;
    • connecting account 465760687006 worked end to end: the CloudShell script named maple-integrations-pr-1646 as the trusted principal, the stack deployed, and Check connection showed Connected;
    • CloudTrail shows the role assumed by maple-integrations-pr-1646 with the external ID;
    • afterwards I disconnected, deleted the stack, and no MapleIntegration-* role is left.
  • The CI deploy role (maple-prod-deploy) has AdministratorAccess, so it can create IAM users and keys.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Each prd instance and PR preview declares an IAM user that can only
sts:AssumeRole into MapleIntegration-* roles, plus its access key, and binds
both into api and alerting. Dev keeps the shared dev user from .env.local.

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 8/10 · likely safe to merge
No defect found in the new IAM principal; the prd identity cutover and the deploy role's IAM permissions are unverified outside the diff.
no findings · tests partial −1 · risk high −1

Every deploy but dev now declares its own AWS integration IAM user plus access key and binds them into api and alerting, replacing the shared env identity. Contained and in the existing alchemy idiom; safe to merge once the prd identity cutover is checked.

  • createMapleAwsPrincipal declares an IAM user allowed only sts:AssumeRole on MapleIntegration-*, plus its key
  • prd, prd-eu and both preview profiles bind that identity into api and alerting; dev keeps .env.local
  • AWS_ROLE_NAME_PREFIX now names both the assume policy's resource and every connection's role

Before merge

  • Infra · Check every environment has what this config now expects · alchemy.run.ts
  • Manual · Confirm the deploy role for prd and previews may create IAM users, inline policies and access keys (iam:CreateUser, iam:CreateAccessKey, iam:PutUserPolicy)
  • Manual · Check no live prd AWS connection trusts the old MAPLE_AWS_PRINCIPAL_ARN; a changed ARN needs its customer stacks regenerated
  • Manual · Check an IAM user named maple-integrations / maple-integrations-eu does not already exist in the AWS account, or the create fails
  • Manual · Drop MAPLE_AWS_* from the prd Infisical env once the deploy's own user is live

  • Blank secret key stays safe: optionalRedacted drops blanks (packages/infra/src/config-helpers.ts:18), so a lost key disables AWS rather than signing with ""
  • awsPrincipal spreads after configuredEnv in api and alerting, so a stray deploy-time MAPLE_AWS_* cannot override it
  • Policy resource and role name both derive from AWS_ROLE_NAME_PREFIX (packages/domain/src/aws.ts:88), so they cannot drift

📝 Walkthrough

Enabled deployment profiles provision an AWS integration IAM user with restricted role-assumption permissions. The resulting principal environment values are added to API and alerting workers. Development profiles leave the deployment principal undefined.

Changes: AWS integration identity

Layer / File(s) Summary
Principal permissions and provisioning
packages/domain/src/aws.ts, packages/infra/src/aws/*
A shared role-name prefix is used in the customer-role name and IAM policy. The new principal provisioning function creates a tagged user and access key, then returns the principal ARN and key values.
Profile and stack principal binding
packages/infra/src/profile.ts, packages/infra/src/cloudflare/stack.ts, alchemy.run.ts, .env.example, docs/pr-previews.md
Profiles now control principal provisioning. US production and PR preview enable it; dev disables it. The stack context exposes the principal when enabled. The example environment and preview documentation describe the deployment behavior.
Worker environment binding
apps/api/src/worker.ts, apps/api/src/resources/env.ts, apps/alerting/src/worker.ts
API and alerting workers add deployment principal values after configured values and before devEnv. Comments distinguish local development credentials from deployment-bound credentials.

Checked the review's manual list:

  • Deploy role can create IAM users and keys: maple-prod-deploy (prd and previews) has AdministratorAccess. This PR's preview deploy created maple-integrations-pr-1646, its inline policy and its key.
  • No prd connection trusts an old ARN: the AWS integration (feat(integrations): connect an AWS account as a source #1635) hasn't shipped yet, so no prd connection or customer stack exists. The first stack anyone deploys will name the deploy's own user.
  • No name collision: maple-integrations and maple-integrations-eu don't exist in 465760687006 (NoSuchEntity).
  • Infisical: prod has no MAPLE_AWS_* secrets, so there is nothing to drop.
  • Environments: the new code needs no new variables. Dev reads MAPLE_AWS_* from .env.local, as before.

I also ran a full connect on the preview: the stack trusted maple-integrations-pr-1646, the check showed Connected, and everything was cleaned up afterwards.

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 9/10 · safe to merge
Deploy-only infra with no runtime path changed; the profile flag is pinned by a test, the api/alerting env wiring is not tested anywhere in this repository.
no findings · tests partial −1 · risk medium

Deploys now create Maple's own AWS integration IAM user, its assume-role-only policy and an access key, and bind the ARN, key id and secret into api and alerting. A new profile flag keeps it on for prd, EU and every preview and off for dev. Contained infra change, safe to merge.

  • createMapleAwsPrincipal declares the IAM user, its assume-role policy and an access key
  • api and alerting bind the identity over any configured MAPLE_AWS_* entry
  • deploys.awsIntegrationPrincipal is on for prd, EU and previews, off for dev

  • A blank secret really reads as unset: optionalRedacted maps a blank value to None (config-helpers.ts:18), so the failure mode described in the PR holds

  • Preview teardown deletes the IAM user: closed-PR stages go through alchemy destroy (cleanup-preview-orphans.yml:72)

Deploys now create and bind Maple's own AWS integration IAM user and key instead of a hand-made one from the secret store. The principal is scoped to sts:AssumeRole on MapleIntegration-* only and the env plumbing is ordered correctly; safe to merge.

Deploys now declare Maple's AWS integration IAM user, its assume-role policy and access key, and bind the three MAPLE_AWS_* values into api and alerting. The wiring matches the existing secret-binding pattern and is safe to merge.

On the EU deploy role: production-eu sets no AWS_DEPLOY_ROLE_ARN of its own. It falls back to the repository variable, the same arn:aws:iam::465760687006:role/maple-prod-deploy the US deploy uses, which has AdministratorAccess. So both instances deploy into the same AWS account with the same role, which can create IAM users and keys. That account has no maple-integrations-eu user yet (NoSuchEntity), and its name doesn't clash with the US user's.

Contained deploy-time change; the new profile flag is pinned by a test and the blank-secret path resolves to unset at runtime.
no findings · tests partial −1 · risk medium

Deploys now create Maple's own IAM user and access key for the AWS integration and bind them to api and alerting, behind a new per-profile flag that stays off on dev. The wiring and the extracted role-name prefix are consistent with the existing env and connection code; safe to merge.

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 9/10 · safe to merge
Least-privilege policy and env ordering check out; the only untested path is the blank-secret fallback, exercised by no test.
no findings · tests partial −1 · risk medium

Deploys now provision Maple's own AWS integration IAM user and access key and bind them into api and alerting, replacing the hand-made key. The policy is least-privilege, dev keeps .env.local, and nothing in the running code changes shape; safe to merge.

  • createMapleAwsPrincipal declares the maple-integrations IAM user (only sts:AssumeRole on MapleIntegration-*) and its key
  • api and alerting spread MapleStackContext.awsPrincipal after their configured env, before devEnv
  • AWS_ROLE_NAME_PREFIX in @maple/domain/aws now spells both connection role names and the policy resource
  • New deploys.awsIntegrationPrincipal flag: on for prd, prd-eu and previews, off for dev

Before merge

  • Infra · Check every environment has what this config now expects · alchemy.run.ts
  • Manual · Deploy prd and prd-eu so maple-integrations / maple-integrations-eu exist before anyone connects an account in those instances
  • Manual · On prd the deploy now overrides any MAPLE_AWS_* still in the Infisical stores; retire the hand-made user's key there once the deploy has bound the new one

Maple review

🟢 Confidence 9/10 · safe to merge
Small, contained infra change with the flag matrix pinned by profile.test.ts; only the IAM resource itself rests on the author's real deploy, not a test.
no findings · tests partial −1 · risk medium

Deploys now declare Maple's AWS integration IAM user and access key in alchemy and bind the ARN, key id and secret into api and alerting, gated by a new deploys.awsIntegrationPrincipal profile flag. The change is contained to infra and its tests and is safe to merge.

  • createMapleAwsPrincipal declares the IAM user, its assume-only policy and an access key
  • MapleStackContext.awsPrincipal is spread into api's and alerting's env
  • New deploys.awsIntegrationPrincipal flag on for prd, prd-eu and previews, off for dev
  • AWS_ROLE_NAME_PREFIX moves to @maple/domain/aws, shared with connection role names

Before merge

  • Infra · Check every environment has what this config now expects · alchemy.run.ts
  • Manual · Keep the prd deploy state store intact: a lost state re-plans the key without its secret, which binds blank and turns the AWS integration off

Production impact

What was checked
  • Blank bound secret reads as absent: optionalRedacted maps blank to None (packages/infra/src/config-helpers.ts:18), so Redacted.make("") leaves AWS unavailable, not broken
  • EU_PRD inherits the flag from US_PRD (profile.ts:124) and DEV overrides it false (profile.ts:181), matching the new flag test
  • The policy's role ARN prefix matches the names awsConnectionResourceNames builds (packages/domain/src/aws.ts:88)
