Explanation of Change

Resizing a column now takes the width out of the resizable columns to its right instead of growing the row, so the table keeps its width. Absorbing columns shrink equally, never below their content width. Past that, the table scrolls. The drag and the stored widths go through the same resolver (resolveOverriddenColumnWidths), so columns don't jump on release.

Fixed Issues

$ #101331
PROPOSAL:

Tests

Important

Please clear onyx cache if you tested resizableTableColumns before, because the data structure changed

Preconditions: web, wide layout, resizableTableColumns beta enabled.

  1. Go to Workspaces > pick a workspace > Members
  2. Drag the right edge of the "Member" column to the right by ~100px, then release
  3. Verify that the "Role" column narrows by the same amount while dragging, the row keeps the table's width, and no horizontal scrollbar appears
  4. Keep dragging the "Member" edge to the right until "Role" reaches its content width
  5. Verify that "Role" stops shrinking without truncating its text, and that the table starts scrolling horizontally from that point on
  6. Release, then refresh the page
  7. Verify that the column widths after the refresh match the ones at release, with no jump

  1. Go to Workspaces > pick a workspace > Members
  2. Drag the right edge of the "Member" column to the left by ~100px, then release
  3. Verify that the "Role" column widens by the same amount while dragging, the row still fills the table width, and the caret column stays pinned to the right edge

  1. Go to Workspaces > pick a workspace with taxes enabled and the "Tax code" column visible > Taxes
  2. Drag the right edge of the "Name" column to the right by ~100px, then release
  3. Verify that "Tax rate" and "Tax code" each narrow by about half of the drag
  4. Drag the right edge of the "Tax rate" column to the right
  5. Verify that "Name" keeps its width and only "Tax code" absorbs the change
  • Verify that no errors appear in the JS console

Offline tests

  1. Go offline
  2. Repeat the first test
  3. Verify that resizing behaves the same, and the widths persist after refreshing the page (stored locally in Onyx, no API call)

QA Steps

Same as tests

  • Verify that no errors appear in the JS console

PR Author Checklist

  • I linked the correct issue in the ### Fixed Issues section above
  • I wrote clear testing steps that cover the changes made in this PR
    • I added steps for local testing in the Tests section
    • I added steps for the expected offline behavior in the Offline steps section
    • I added steps for Staging and/or Production testing in the QA steps section
    • I added steps to cover failure scenarios (i.e. verify an input displays the correct error message if the entered data is not correct)
    • I turned off my network connection and tested it while offline to ensure it matches the expected behavior (i.e. verify the default avatar icon is displayed if app is offline)
    • I tested this PR with a High Traffic account against the staging or production API to ensure there are no regressions (e.g. long loading states that impact usability).
  • I included screenshots or videos for tests on all platforms
  • I ran the tests on all platforms & verified they passed on:
    • Android: Native
    • Android: mWeb Chrome
    • iOS: Native
    • iOS: mWeb Safari
    • MacOS: Chrome / Safari
  • I verified there are no console errors (if there's a console error not related to the PR, report it or open an issue for it to be fixed)
  • I followed proper code patterns (see Reviewing the code)
    • I verified that comments were added to code that is not self explanatory
    • I verified that any new or modified comments were clear, correct English, and explained "why" the code was doing something instead of only explaining "what" the code was doing.
    • I verified any copy / text that was added to the app is grammatically correct in English. It adheres to proper capitalization guidelines (note: only the first word of header/labels should be capitalized), and is either coming verbatim from figma or has been approved by marketing (in order to get marketing approval, ask the Bug Zero team member to add the Waiting for copy label to the issue)
  • If a new code pattern is added I verified it was agreed to be used by multiple Expensify engineers
  • I followed the guidelines as stated in the Review Guidelines
  • I tested other components that can be impacted by my changes (i.e. if the PR modifies a shared library or component like Avatar, I verified the components using Avatar are working as expected)
  • If a new CSS style is added I verified that:
    • A similar style doesn't already exist
    • The style can't be created with an existing StyleUtils function (i.e. StyleUtils.getBackgroundAndBorderStyle(theme.componentBG))
  • If new assets were added or existing ones were modified, I verified that:
    • The assets are optimized and compressed (for SVG files, run npm run compress-svg)
    • The assets load correctly across all supported platforms.
  • If the PR modifies code that runs when editing or sending messages, I tested and verified there is no unexpected behavior for all supported markdown - URLs, single line code, code blocks, quotes, headings, bold, strikethrough, and italic.
  • If the PR modifies a generic component, I tested and verified that those changes do not break usages of that component in the rest of the App (i.e. if a shared library or component like Avatar is modified, I verified that Avatar is working as expected in all cases)
  • If the PR modifies a component related to any of the existing Storybook stories, I tested and verified all stories for that component are still working as expected.
  • If the PR modifies a component or page that can be accessed by a direct deeplink, I verified that the code functions as expected when the deeplink is used - from a logged in and logged out account.
  • If the PR modifies the UI (e.g. new buttons, new UI components, changing the padding/spacing/sizing, moving components, etc) or modifies the form input styles:
    • I verified that all the inputs inside a form are aligned with each other.
    • I added Design label and/or tagged @Expensify/design so the design team can review the changes.
  • If the PR adds or modifies the UI:
    • I asked an AI agent to review the changes for accessibility issues and addressed its findings.
    • I tested with a screen reader (VoiceOver on macOS) and verified all new/changed elements are reachable with a logical focus order.
    • I verified all new/changed elements have meaningful accessible names and roles.
    • I verified state changes are announced (e.g. checked/unchecked, expanded/collapsed, selected).
  • I added unit tests for any new feature or bug fix in this PR to help automatically prevent regressions in this user flow.
  • If the main branch was merged into this PR after a review, I tested again and verified the outcome was still expected according to the Test steps.

Review

I found one bug. When an earlier column has a stored width, starting a drag on a later column makes columns to its left jump.

Cause: resolveOverriddenColumnWidths.ts:57 excludes every overridden column from absorbing. Mid-drag, useColumnResize/index.ts:114 adds the dragged column to the overrides. That column stops absorbing the earlier override, so the earlier override's resize is redistributed among the remaining columns, including ones to the left of the dragged column.

Example: You have four 200px columns, a to d, in an 800px row, and a is stored at 260.

  • At rest, the columns are 260 / 180 / 180 / 180.
  • You start dragging c without moving it, which resolves {a: 260, c: 180}.
  • The columns become 260 / 170 / 180 / 190.

b shrinks 10px, so c's edge moves 10px away from the pointer on the first move. The release matches the drag, but the grab doesn't match the rest state. The test doesn't move anything when a column is stored at the width it's already painted at misses this because its third column has no room left.

Suggested fix: Drop columnWidthOverrides?.[column.key] === undefined from canColumnAbsorb. A later stored column still absorbs earlier overrides, then gets pinned to its stored width, and only its own delta moves on to the columns after it. Columns left of the dragged column then never depend on its width. By hand, the existing resolveOverriddenColumnWidths cases give the same results, including leaves a user-sized column alone ({260, 200, 140}). Please confirm by running the suite. A four-column regression test like the example above would cover this case.

Also checked, no issues
  • getAbsorbedColumnWidths: shares are whole px, they sum exactly, and an absorber that hits its minimum passes its share to the others.
  • The growable column's base includes floored leftover, so it absorbs from leftover first, and dragMinWidths still applies.
  • When you release, only the dragged column is stored, and clearLiveWidths clears every absorber's live width because they're all in liveWidthsRef.
  • The non-resizable fallback getResizedColumnWidths in useDynamicColumnWidths only returns the dragged column, which is fine.

    • Any internal methods bound to this are necessary to be bound (i.e. avoid this.submit = this.submit.bind(this); if this.submit is never passed to a component event handler like onClick)
    • All JSX used for rendering exists in the render method
    • The component has the minimum amount of code necessary for its purpose, and it is broken down into smaller components in order to separate concerns and functions

No help site update is needed: column resizing is still behind the resizableTableColumns beta, and this PR doesn't remove that beta or change anything a help article describes.
