Explain the plan einfold runs, through datafusion-python's FFI - #92
Fixes#84, and #81's third ask: seeing which parts of a plan einfold runs, and what they cost.
Why. In a datafusion-python session with einfold installed, EXPLAIN showed only the initial logical plan. The cause is in datafusion-proto, DataFusion's protobuf encoding of plans. The session hands the Explain node to einfold's planner across DataFusion's FFI as protobuf, and the decoder rebuilds it with LogicalPlanBuilder::explain. That keeps only the initial plan's text, and marks the plan as not optimized. DataFusion's physical planner then shows that one plan and stops.
What changed. einfold's planner marks the decoded Explain as optimized, after detecting folds in the plan within. The session did optimize the plan, and the plan within is the one that runs. DataFusion's planner then explains it as it does its own plans:
EXPLAIN gives a logical plan, with einfold's Fold nodes, and a physical plan, with its EinFoldExec operators;
EXPLAIN VERBOSE gives the physical planner's steps;
EXPLAIN ANALYZE runs the plan, and shows EinFoldExec's metrics: which algorithm ran, the host's plans it ran, its time and its rows.
Tests.test_explains_the_plan_einfold_runs checks three things on a matrix product:
EXPLAIN gives the same kinds of rows with einfold as without, and they show the fold and its operator;
EXPLAIN VERBOSE gives more than two rows, the physical plan among them;
EXPLAIN ANALYZE reports that the dense algorithm ran.
The bridge marks EXPLAIN plans as successfully optimized after fold detection. Tests check logical and physical plan output, verbose output, and the reported fold metric.
Changes: EXPLAIN plan handling
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Mark EXPLAIN plans as optimized python/src/bridge.rs
A new helper marks LogicalPlan::Explain as successfully optimized and leaves other plan variants unchanged.
Apply EXPLAIN handling and verify output python/src/bridge.rs, python/tests/test_einfold.py
Bridge::create_physical_plan applies the helper after fold detection. The new test checks plan types, einfold plans, verbose output, and dense_folds=1 in analyzed output.

Possibly related issues
xqlsystems/einfold#115 — The test checks for physical-plan output in EXPLAIN VERBOSE; the issue asks for checks that distinguish the final physical plan from an intermediate physical plan.
xqlsystems/einfold#81 — This PR exposes einfold plan nodes and a fold metric in explain output. It does not address the issue’s request for planning-time or slowdown information.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review af3e6
Failed EXPLAIN statements can now return misleading output or a physical-planning error; preserve the original failure state before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to af3e6
The change is narrowly scoped to query-plan explanation and adds no demonstrated access-control bypass. Uncertainty remains around how genuinely unsuccessful optimization is distinguished from status lost during plan serialization.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated changed exposure is EXPLAIN handling within sessions already using the bridge. The test function does not establish a new externally callable production route, and the production diff adds no identity, credential, or tenant-selection mechanism.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The bridge continues using the supplied session for localization and session-backed physical planning. The status assignment does not replace the session, catalogs, task context, or table providers.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Execution reset and stream polling remain unchanged. Planning-time reads performed by table localization also predate this PR; they are not evidence that the new status assignment introduced query execution during plain EXPLAIN.

Explanation
Issue #84 requires EXPLAIN to show the plan that einfold runs in a datafusion-python session. python/src/bridge.rs now marks decoded LogicalPlan::Explain plans as optimized after fold detection. The focused test checks logical and physical output, Fold, EinFoldExec, verbose physical-plan output, and EXPLAIN ANALYZE dense-fold metrics.

The changes are limited to Explain handling in python/src/bridge.rs and a regression test in python/tests/test_einfold.py. The verbose and analyze checks support the reported plan-visibility objective. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

An EXPLAIN reached einfold's planner rebuilt from protobuf, with only its
initial plan's text and marked as not optimized, so DataFusion's planner
showed only that one plan (#84). The session did optimize it, and einfold
has detected its folds, so the planner now marks it optimized: EXPLAIN
shows the plan that runs, with its Fold nodes and EinFoldExec operators,
EXPLAIN VERBOSE its steps, and EXPLAIN ANALYZE which algorithm ran.
