Add M2's gate benchmark: demo 1's attention in SQL, einfold on and off - #73
Last of M2's first stack, on #72's detection. benchmarks/m2-gate runs demo 1, rediscovering FlashAttention from causal attention in plain SQL (docs/demos.md), against its success criteria, which are M2's gate.
The query is the demo's, with 64 features, in both spellings: the maximum as a window, and as GROUP BY joined back. It runs on DataFusion with einfold off and on, and on DuckDB 1.4.3. Each run is its own process under GNU time, with a 6 GB budget. einfold finds the pipeline in the SQL itself.

Against the criteria (details in the README):
Found, not told: yes, for both spellings.
Masks: exactly the causal half of the tile pairs, at every L.
Fast: yes, wherever a host finishes. It also runs where both hosts run out of memory.
Memory: no N² term. The rest grows with the inputs and output, which are dense copies of the inputs and the output's key columns.
Correct:
within the error bound: 0.8–5.1e-15 of the largest output, against DataFusion's 6.6–61e-15, with scores spread up to 40×;
the same bits on 1, 2, 5 and 12 threads;
exactly DataFusion's NaN rows, with no differing row, on NaN, ±∞, 1e300 and an all-−∞ row.
Not yet:
ddx's attention program, which normalizes inside the sum;
the Gaussian-kernel weighted average, the generality test, whose producer Σ (t − s)² isn't a sum of products. That needs a squared-difference row value in the IR and kernel.
Both are follow-ups, so the gate isn't fully passed.
After CodeRabbit's review
run.sh and the benchmark exit non-zero when the accuracy or special-value checks fail, or the DuckDB script can't be generated, and reject unknown arguments.
accuracy checks both spellings against the reference, each on 1, 2, 5 and 12 threads. Both have einfold's error, and the same bits on every thread count.
An output that isn't finite counts as an infinite error (f64::max skipped NaN before), and edges reports each engine's row count.
The README says what each timing covers (DuckDB's ends at a temporary table, not Arrow rows), what the checksum is, and what the special-value check can't tell apart. run.sh reports each command's exit status, and DuckDB's errors exit with 1.
This pull request adds a standalone Rust benchmark for causal self-attention. It provides DataFusion, einfold, and DuckDB execution paths, plus numerical accuracy, thread-consistency, and special-value checks. Shell and Python scripts run the benchmarks, and a README records setup, results, and run instructions.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review dd4d0
The correctness gate can pass results that exceed its stated error bound or contain duplicate output rows. Fix those checks before merging; the interpreter-path and documentation issues are narrower.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to dd4d0
This is a developer-run benchmark over synthetic data. No introduced security vulnerability or expanded production exposure was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns engine spill storage and cleanup after forced termination.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The evidenced exposure is the invoking account's local process, filesystem, and resource authority. Selecting a different executable or directly supplying another SQL file uses that existing authority; no privilege elevation, tenant boundary, or downstream service exposure was established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The Python helper executes statements from its supplied file without a SQL security policy. Its supported caller supplies generated benchmark SQL inside a unique temporary workspace. This is a trusted local execution path, not a sandbox for hostile SQL.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Each runner invocation creates a distinct workspace, preventing ordinary concurrent q.sql collisions, and registers quoted cleanup on shell exit. Measurements have a 900-second timeout; measurement failures are displayed and execution continues, whereas SQL-generation and correctness-command failures terminate the runner.
observed — The engines receive tracked-memory and temporary-storage limits, but the benchmark does not explicitly select spill directories. An EXIT trap does not guarantee cleanup after every interruption, including SIGKILL. Spill placement and residual-file behavior remain coverage gaps; the inspected inputs are synthetic, and no sensitive-data disclosure was established.

- Line 29: Update the DuckDB SQL error-handling path that currently calls
sys.exit(0) to exit with a nonzero status after printing the error, so callers
can detect benchmark failure.
Review comments at @benchmarks/m2-gate/README.md:
- Line 37: Update the benchmark README claim near “All three agree” to describe
only aggregate checksum agreement; the benchmark reports one sum(abs(x)) per
result, not checksums for individual rows. Do not claim row-by-row agreement
unless the benchmark compares outputs by (t, d).
- Line 15: Update the benchmark timing description so it does not claim DuckDB
timings include returning rows as Arrow: its timed statement only creates a
temporary table, while DataFusion collects Arrow batches. Either describe these
different timing boundaries accurately or make both engines measure equivalent
result conversion.
- Line 43: Update the Fast statement in the benchmark README to remove the
unsupported claim that both hosts run out of memory at L = 16,384 and 65,536.
State only the measured result: DuckDB runs out of memory at L = 16,384, and no
DataFusion case is run at that length or either host at L = 65,536.
- Line 48: Update the special-value claim in the README to describe only what
the check verifies: matching NaN counts and compared values within a 1e-12
relative tolerance. State that it does not distinguish NULL, NaN, or missing
rows, and does not compare row counts between engines. Do not expand the change
to the suggested follow-up implementation.

- Line 24: Update the run flow around the timeout invocation to preserve its
exit status instead of returning echo’s status, and report nonzero failures
separately from expected memory exhaustion. Adjust the output filtering so panic
and timeout diagnostics remain visible.

- Around line 26-27: Update the `edges` coverage claim in the module
documentation to say that NaN and infinities are tested only in selected inputs,
since the cases do not cover every input. Keep the existing all-`-inf` row claim
unchanged.

reduction to detect when an output is non-finite while its reference is finite,
and report an explicit failure or infinite error instead of allowing f64::max to
hide the mismatch. Preserve the existing error reduction for other values.
- Line 268: Update the accuracy comparison around the window run so it also
checks the groupby spelling against the reference and for thread consistency;
retain the existing comparisons for both spellings, using the benchmark runner’s
corresponding results.
- Line 44: Update the comment above the table-name input values to describe how
the deterministic sine input is generated, replacing the unexplained “spike S27”

- Line 83: Replace the `einfold` boolean parameter in `context` with an enum
whose variants explicitly name the planner modes, and update `context` callers
to pass the appropriate variant instead of `true` or `false`.
- Line 88: Replace non-test unwrap calls in the benchmark’s batch-building,

The benchmark reports one sum(abs(x)) for each result, not a checksum for each row. A sign change or swapped values can leave that aggregate unchanged. Report aggregate checksum agreement, or compare outputs by (t, d) before claiming row-level agreement. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Replace unwrap calls outside tests with contextual errors.
This binary also uses unwrap while building batches, executing the query, reading results, and parsing arguments. If one of those operations fails, a contextual expect or propagated error would identify the failed benchmark operation. Apply the same rule to the other unwrap calls in this file. Consider alternating benchmark order for stronger timing evidence.
The M2 criteria require that einfold be faster than the host, but they do not require repeated or rotated samples. The current one-run, fixed-order design is therefore not a gate violation. It remains a worthwhile optional improvement because separate processes do not control cache, thermal, or CPU-frequency effects. Repeat cases, alternate or randomize engine order, and record the order with each timing.

🪭 Claude (einfold): Deferred, deliberately. The M2 gate's margins are 41–412×, so the order of runs can't change its result. Where a margin is close, as M1's gate at 3.98× against 4×, benchmarks/m1-gate alternates the order over four rounds. The release candidates' acceptance tests will time these queries again, in xarray-sql.

@alxmrs Understood. Given the reported 41–412× margins, I accept the deliberate deferral. Alternating runs was an optional timing-method improvement, not an M2 gate requirement. No change is needed for this PR.

Resolve relative PYTHON paths before changing directories.
When PYTHON=.venv/bin/python, run changes to $WORK before invoking it. The path then resolves under $WORK, so each DuckDB measurement can fail even though the interpreter exists. The default python3, an absolute path, or an activated virtualenv avoids this case, so the impact is limited to this non-default configuration.

Check the output row count in accuracy.
run writes each output row into out[t·D + d]. A duplicated row therefore overwrites the earlier row and leaves no trace in err. If a rewrite emits a duplicate key and a missing key, the NaN check can also be masked. A duplicate with an equal value would pass both checks.
edges compares rows between engines, but accuracy ignores rows. Assert rows == l * D for the einfold runs and for the DataFusion baseline. Without this assertion, the correctness gate cannot detect duplicate keys.

- let host = (run(&context(l, &tables, Planner::DataFusion, 12), "window", l).await).out;+ let baseline = run(&context(l, &tables, Planner::DataFusion, 12), "window", l).await;+ assert_eq!(baseline.rows, l * D, "DataFusion returned the wrong number of rows");+ let host = baseline.out;
- let Ran { out, shown, .. } = run(&ctx, form, l).await;+ let Ran { out, rows, shown } = run(&ctx, form, l).await;+ assert_eq!(rows, l * D, "einfold's {form} result has the wrong number of rows");
As per path instructions, check that "a rewrite can't change a query's answer: NULLs, NaNs, duplicate keys, empty groups and overflow."

🪭 Claude (einfold): Covered already: a missing row leaves NaN at its position in out, which err counts as an infinite error, and the run then exits 1. So a short count fails the gate.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@alxmrs You're right: a missing row leaves NaN in out, so err reports infinite error. My claim that a duplicate could mask a missing key was incorrect.
The remaining case is an extra duplicate row with no missing key. If all expected keys appear and one appears twice with the same value, out and err remain unchanged. The proposed row-count assertion detects that case, not a short result. The finding is valid only for that narrower case.
run.sh invokes accuracy, but the command exits only when thread results differ or err(&ours) is non-finite. A finite result can differ materially from the compensated reference and still pass. The README identifies being “within the error bound” as part of the correctness claim, so the gate must compare the finite error with the approved bound. The inspected README does not state the bound value, so no exact threshold is proposed here.

🪭 Claude (einfold): Deferred to #115: section 8.6 bounds the error per output by the sum of its terms, which this check doesn't compute yet. The check stops on the failures that matter most now: bits that change with the thread count, and errors that aren't finite.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@alxmrs Understood. Numerical error-bound enforcement is deferred to #115. The current gate checks thread-count consistency and rejects non-finite errors; it does not enforce the per-output bound. This remains a deferred limitation, not a completed fix.
Runs demo 1's causal attention, as written in docs/demos.md, in both
spellings, on DataFusion with einfold off and on and on DuckDB, each in
its own process for peak memory, and checks accuracy against a
compensated reference, the bits across thread counts, and NaN and
infinities. einfold finds the pipeline in the SQL and runs it 37–397×
faster than the faster host where one finishes, at L = 16,384 and
65,536 where both run out of memory, with exactly the causal half of
the tiles visited.

Last of M2's first stack, on #72's detection.
benchmarks/m2-gateruns demo 1, rediscovering FlashAttention from causal attention in plain SQL (docs/demos.md), against its success criteria, which are M2's gate. The query is the demo's, with 64 features, in both spellings: the maximum as a window, and as
GROUP BYjoined back. It runs on DataFusion with einfold off and on, and on DuckDB 1.4.3. Each run is its own process under GNUtime, with a 6 GB budget. einfold finds the pipeline in the SQL itself.(Window spelling. The
GROUP BYspelling is 37–397× faster than the faster host, and DataFusion takes 369 s and 10 GB at 8,192.)Against the criteria (details in the README):
Found, not told: yes, for both spellings.
Masks: exactly the causal half of the tile pairs, at every L.
Fast: yes, wherever a host finishes. It also runs where both hosts run out of memory.
Memory: no
N²term. The rest grows with the inputs and output, which are dense copies of the inputs and the output's key columns.Correct:
±∞,1e300and an all-−∞row.Not yet:
Σ (t − s)²isn't a sum of products. That needs a squared-difference row value in the IR and kernel. Both are follow-ups, so the gate isn't fully passed.
After CodeRabbit's review
run.shand the benchmark exit non-zero when the accuracy or special-value checks fail, or the DuckDB script can't be generated, and reject unknown arguments.accuracychecks both spellings against the reference, each on 1, 2, 5 and 12 threads. Both have einfold's error, and the same bits on every thread count.f64::maxskipped NaN before), andedgesreports each engine's row count.run.shreports each command's exit status, and DuckDB's errors exit with 1.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
