Run EinFoldExec where there is no Tokio runtime - #57
Stacked on #56. Found by spike S29, which runs einfold inside xarray-sql through the FFI query planner of datafusion-python (Apache DataFusion's Python bindings). xarray-sql is an XQL Systems project for querying xarray Datasets with SQL.
The problem. A host in another library polls an FFI planner's operators through DataFusion's FFI, on the host's own threads. einfold's library has its own copy of Tokio, the async runtime DataFusion runs on, and on those threads that copy sees no runtime. EinFoldExec spawned work in three places:
reading its inputs' partitions (collect_partitioned);
running its kernel on a blocking thread;
running the host's plan as its fallback.
With no runtime, each of those panics inside an FFI function that can't unwind. That aborts the whole Python process.
The change. Where no runtime is current, EinFoldExec:
reads its inputs' partitions concurrently, as futures on the polling thread;
runs its kernel on that thread;
runs the host's plan, whose operators spawn, on a runtime of its own, made the first time it's needed.
Where a runtime is current, which is every case in plain DataFusion, nothing changes.
About 60 non-test lines.
Tests (hand tests). Each one runs the operator once with a runtime, then executes a freshly planned copy outside any runtime, and checks the two give the same rows. Each fails without the change.
runs_where_there_is_no_tokio_runtime: inputs of several partitions, on the dense path.
host_plan_runs_where_there_is_no_tokio_runtime: text keys, so the host's plan runs.

Walkthrough
EinFoldExec now collects partitions and host-plan fallback results through runtime-aware helpers. It runs fold kernels on a blocking task when a Tokio runtime is current and inline otherwise. Tests compare execution results with and without a current runtime.
Adds Tokio runtime support. Collection uses the current runtime or a lazily initialized library-owned runtime. Kernel execution uses a blocking task when a runtime is current and runs inline otherwise. Tests compare results across runtime conditions.

The reviewed changes support execution without a current Tokio runtime, with no actionable merge-blocking risk identified.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to ad37b
The change enables execution without a current runtime, but fallback query work can outlive cancellation of its result stream. Repeated cancellations could consume shared process resources. The exposure depends on how the embedding application admits and limits queries; no privilege expansion or cross-tenant data access is established.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: When no Tokio runtime is current, host-plan collection is spawned on a shared library-owned runtime and awaited through an unguarded JoinHandle. Dropping the output stream after spawning detaches rather than aborts that task. A caller able to submit and cancel eligible queries could leave fallback work consuming CPU, memory, or input resources after cancellation, weakening failure containment in the embedding process. Independent host limits may bound this exposure but were not established.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated exposure is resource consumption within the embedding query process. Impact on other tenants or services requires shared deployment resources and query access that are not established by the supplied relationships.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A caller able to submit eligible queries could select a host-fallback case, poll it without a current runtime until collection is spawned, then drop its result stream. Repetition can overlap abandoned work unless independent cancellation or admission controls stop it. The text-key test demonstrates fallback eligibility, not exploitation or production reachability.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The changed boundary is execution ownership between the host-polled stream and the library-owned runtime. The same fallback plan and TaskContext cross that boundary; no new identity or authorization decision appears in this path.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — No-runtime input reads remain owned by the outer future, and fallback state has an explicit reset path. The existing blocking-kernel path also retains its input reservation during continued execution after cancellation. These controls do not provide an abort owner for the newly spawned host collection.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Tie the spawned fallback task to the output stream through cancellation-aware ownership, such as an abort-on-drop task wrapper. Validate cancellation after spawning, including repeated cancellation and subsequent execution, so abandoned query work cannot silently accumulate.

Where no Tokio runtime was current, EinFoldExec polled its inputs' streams
on the calling thread, so an input operator that spawns tasks, such as a
repartition, panicked. Inputs now run as the host's plan does, on the
library's runtime. Work spawned there is a SpawnedTask, which aborts when
dropped, so a cancelled query stops it.
