fix(ddx-ad): refuse a plan whose producer dropped a column beneath its root - #245
On DuckDB, a union branch that selects one column twice panicked or gave an unclear refusal:
index out of bounds: the len is 2 but the index is 2 (opt/prune.rs)
invalid Substrait plan: field 1 is referenced, but the input has only 1 columns
In Python the panic is a PanicException, which except Exception doesn't catch.
The cause is DuckDB's Substrait producer. It writes a projection of plain columns as its read's column mask, so SELECT i AS k, x AS v, x AS v2 FROM a becomes a read of (i, x), under three names. Nothing in the plan says which column was repeated, so ddx can't rebuild it. Disabling each of DuckDB's optimizer rules in turn doesn't change this.
At the root, ddx already refused such a plan with a reason. Beneath a union, the dropped column leaves the union's inputs unequal, or an emit naming a column that isn't there. ddx copies the relations it doesn't differentiate into its steps as they are, and pruning one panicked on the emit.
How
checked_root now checks every relation of the plan, bottom up, in one pass (checked_width):
each emit names only its relation's columns;
a set operation's inputs have one width.
Either failure is refused as the root's mismatch was, with the reason:
invalid Substrait plan: a relation's emit names its column 2, past its 2: the producer dropped a column (DuckDB's drops one that repeats another; write each column once)
width and the new pass share read_width and join_width.
Edge cases
A relation whose width ddx can't tell (an extension, a reference, a grouping set), and everything above it, isn't checked, as before.
Subqueries aren't checked.
A repeated column that no later relation reads is pruned by DuckDB before it writes the plan, so it still works.
Tests
forward.rs: unequal union inputs, and an emit past its relation, beneath the root, are refused; an equal union isn't.
test_duckdb.py: the issue's three queries are refused with the reason, and leave no tables. On main the first panics.
The full Rust suite, on Substrait and with steps as SQL, and ddxdb's tests.
Improved validation of query plans to detect when columns are dropped or referenced beyond a relation’s available columns, including in nested set operations. These cases now report an error instead of proceeding with an invalid plan.

Walkthrough
The forward plan now checks known relation widths and reports dropped columns. Rust and DuckDB tests cover unequal set widths, out-of-range emit mappings, and nested unions.
checked_root now checks known widths across the plan. The new bottom-up checked_width handles supported relation types, checks set-input widths and emit mappings, and uses shared read and join width helpers.
Rust tests cover unequal set widths, out-of-range emit mappings, and a valid set. Parametrized DuckDB tests cover three nested unions, expect a dropped-column error, and verify that no __ddx_ tables remain.
xqlsystems/ddx#192: Adds the checked_root width check that this change extends to relations across the plan.
xqlsystems/ddx#207: Changes window projection widths that the checks in this PR measure.

The validation improves dropped-column errors, but malformed plans can still trigger a panic or escape early rejection. These are bounded input-validation issues; address them before merge or explicitly accept follow-up fixes.

Explanation
Issue #237 requires the three reported DuckDB queries to avoid the panic or refusal and produce correct gradients. The new checked_width logic prevents the panic and gives a clearer dropped a column error, but it still refuses the affected plans. The added tests expect that refusal. The PR does not reconstruct the repeated column or verify gradients for these queries.
Resolution
Make the affected plans execute with correct gradients, or implement equivalent reconstruction of the producer-dropped repeated columns. Add tests that assert successful results for the three #237 queries.

…s root
DuckDB's Substrait producer writes a projection of plain columns as its
read's columns, so it drops a column that repeats another, leaving
nothing to tell which. At the root ddx refused that with a reason;
beneath a union it left the union's inputs unequal, or an emit naming a
column that isn't there (#237). ddx copies the relations it doesn't
differentiate into its steps as they are, and pruning one panicked on
the emit.
Every relation of the plan is now checked bottom up, in one pass: each
emit names only its relation's columns, and a set operation's inputs
have one width. Either failing is refused as the root's was, as are
a negative emit index and a join without two inputs, which panicked.
