fix(ddx-ad): a union's gradient reads each input once - #242
On DuckDB, a union's gradient failed from 16 inputs on (8 when the union is read twice):
Binder Error: Max expression depth limit of 1000 exceeded.
DuckDB counts each CTE of a WITH clause toward that limit, whether or not one reads another; to_sql writes a CTE per relation. Reverse mode wrote a union of n inputs as about 4n² relations.
How
Reverse mode rebuilds a UNION ALL as one relation that holds every input's columns (#229): each input's rows carry their own columns, and NULL in every other input's. ddx doesn't know column types, so those NULLs came from FULL JOINing each input ON TRUE to LIMIT 0 copies of every other input, which the engine types. That's n inputs × n copies.
Now each input's rows carry the other inputs' columns as NULLs of no type: a projection of the input alone. Both engines type them as they type a union's columns. DataFusion's analyzer coerces each union column to its inputs' common type (coerce_union_schema), and DuckDB's union does the same with a bare NULL.
A NULL of no type needs a type in Substrait. Every plan ddx writes now declares DataFusion's own: a user-defined type named null, as DataFusion's producer declares it. Its consumer reads it as DataType::Null, and to_sql already reads it as a bare NULL. A plan that declares null keeps its own anchor (Functions::null_type).
Measured
On DuckDB, the gradient step of a union of SELECT i, c * x FROM a:
inputs
CTEs before
after
4
81
33
8
281
57
16
1,052
105
64
refused
347 + 31 + 11 (split into three)
So the limit now sits at about 150 inputs, not 16. Plans without a union change only in declaring null.
Edge cases
A column real in no input: none. Each union column comes from exactly one input's rows, so every column has a typed value in some input.
A plan with its own null declaration (DataFusion's, for a query with an untyped NULL): reused, not declared twice.
FULL JOIN ... ON FALSE would also read each input once, but both engines run it as a nested loop: 28.7 s on DuckDB for 200k × 200k rows, against 0.001 s for a union.
Tests
union_all.rs: a union of 32 inputs, checked against finite differences. Its steps read the table 65 times; on main, 2,049. The test asserts at most 3n.
test_duckdb.py: a union of 24 inputs on DuckDB, against the closed form.
functions.rs: the null declaration is added once, or reused.
The full Rust suite, on Substrait and with steps as SQL, and ddxdb's tests.

Walkthrough
The PR adds Substrait null type handling and changes UNION ALL construction to project each input once, pad other input blocks with untyped NULLs, and combine the projections. New tests check gradients for unions with many inputs.

Summary
Null type and literal support crates/ddx-ad/src/functions.rs, crates/ddx-ad/src/expr.rs
Functions reuses an existing null extension type or declares one and exposes its anchor. untyped_null builds a nullable NULL literal using that anchor. Tests check anchor selection and reuse.
Project and combine UNION ALL inputs crates/ddx-ad/src/forward.rs, crates/ddx-datafusion/tests/union_all.rs, python/ddxdb/tests/test_duckdb.py
Builder::union_all projects each input’s columns into its own block and pads other blocks with untyped NULLs before combining the projections. Tests check gradients for 32-input and 24-input unions; the DataFusion test also checks input-read counts.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#238] requires reducing the generated SQL growth for gradients through wide or reused DuckDB unions. Builder::union_all now projects each input once and fills other input columns with untyped NULLs instead of joining each input to empty copies of the other inputs. The 32-input Rust regression test checks finite-difference gradients and limits table reads to 3 * n. The DuckDB test covers a 24-input union. The null extension declaration support makes the new projections valid in Substrait and tests declaration reuse.

Reverse mode rebuilds a UNION ALL as one relation that holds every
input's columns, each input's rows with NULL in the others'. The NULLs
came from FULL JOINing each input to empty copies of every other, so a
union of n inputs was n² relations: DuckDB refused its SQL from 16
inputs on (8 when read twice), past 1,000 CTEs (#238).
Each input's rows now carry the other inputs' columns as NULLs of no
type, which both engines type as they type the union's columns. Every
plan ddx writes declares the type of such NULLs: DataFusion's
user-defined type `null`, which its consumer reads as DataType::Null and
to_sql as a bare NULL. A union of 32 inputs reads its table 65 times
rather than 2,049.
