test: a property test for identity; a one-row join of constant data - #230
An adversarial review of the first query-level AD stack found its defects in identity (which rows, which names, whose tables), not in derivatives (#88). Each has a regression test, and the soak (ad_simulation.rs) varies each axis on its own. No test varied them together, or ran several programs on one context at once.
How
crates/ddx-datafusion/tests/identity.rs generates a case per seed:
Names: two to four wrt tables under a bare name, a schema (s1.v), a quoted mixed-case name ("Wq", s2."MiXed"), and twins whose names join alike (a_b.c, a.b_c) or end alike (s1.v, s3.v). Each is spelled in a random case in the loss, wrt and SQL. Half the cases hold a pair of twins, and one loss is taken with respect to both.
Data: NULL values in wrt and non-wrt columns, missing keys (so joins leave rows that no gradient reaches), and rows whose dims repeat.
Losses: sums of one-row aggregates (elementwise terms, joins, a COUNT that no gradient passes through), each taken with respect to some of the tables it reads, or one it doesn't.
The oracle is each loss run alone on a fresh context. Its gradients are checked against a central finite difference, NULL exactly where the value is NULL, or against the refusal the case calls for: dims that repeat, or a table the loss doesn't read. Then every program, and each table's grad(loss, val) in SQL, runs concurrently (tokio::spawn) on one shared context that also holds user tables named like ddx's (__ddx_value, …). Each must give the same gradient or refusal. Afterwards, the catalog must hold exactly the tables and rows it had before.
A bug it found
DataFusion writes a CROSS JOIN as a join on true, and at_most_one_row read only a cross join. So a loss that joined one-row aggregates of constant data was refused as "not a scalar loss". That happened, for example, when only the last term's table was in wrt. at_most_one_row now reads joins:
inner, left and right joins of one-row inputs;
semi- and anti-joins of a one-row side.
A full outer join can give two rows, so it still returns false. The regression test is grad.rs's a_loss_of_one_row_aggregates_joined_is_one_row_when_one_is_constant.
Tests
24 seeds run by default, in about 30 s (DDX_IDENTITY_SEEDS and DDX_IDENTITY_BASE change that). 60 more seeds from 1000 pass too.
Against the soak's mutants, it kills these within 40 seeds: dims-check-off, null-row-zero, unreached-one, fan-in-first, gradient-names-collide, release-keeps-a-step and sql-case-sensitive.
Improved row-count handling for joins: inner, left, and right joins report at most one row only when both inputs do; semi and anti joins use the relevant input’s row count.
Tests
Expanded gradient checks for aggregate expressions across cross joins.
Added coverage for gradients involving NULL values, repeated dimensions, joins, and shared contexts, including comparisons with finite-difference results.
An adversarial review of the first query-level AD stack found its
defects in identity (which rows, which names, whose tables). Each has a
regression test, and the soak varies each axis alone. identity.rs varies
them together:
- wrt tables under schemas, quoted mixed case, and names that join or
end alike, spelled in any case;
- NULLs in wrt and other columns;
- dims that repeat;
- several programs and SQL statements running at once on one context,
beside user tables named like ddx's.
The oracle is each program alone on its own context, checked against
finite differences of its loss.
It found a bug on its first run. DataFusion writes a CROSS JOIN as a
join on true, and at_most_one_row read only a cross join. So a loss that
joined one-row aggregates of constant data was refused as not scalar.
at_most_one_row now reads joins: inner, left and right joins of one-row
inputs, and semi- and anti-joins of a one-row side.

Summary
Join scalarity rules and gradient coverage crates/ddx-ad/src/forward.rs, crates/ddx-datafusion/tests/grad.rs
at_most_one_row recognizes inner, left, and right joins when both inputs have at most one row. It handles semi/anti joins based on the kept side. The gradient test checks a loss formed from three joined aggregate results.

With datafusion-substrait 55.2.0, a conditionless inner join is emitted as RelType::Cross. Therefore, both outer CROSS JOIN operations use the existing RelType::Cross branch. The only predicate-bearing join is below an ungrouped aggregate, where at_most_one_row returns immediately. Removing the new RelType::Join branch would not make this test fail.
Use a non-foldable predicate-bearing join between the one-row aggregate results, and assert or otherwise verify that the serialized plan contains RelType::Join.

@coderabbitai On the grad.rs:145-162 nitpick: declining. I checked it by disabling the RelType::Join arm of at_most_one_row (RelType::Join(j) if false), and a_loss_of_one_row_aggregates_joined_is_one_row_when_one_is_constant then fails with "not a scalar loss". So with this DataFusion version, the test's CROSS JOINs reach ddx as a JoinRel on true, and the test already guards that arm.
@alxmrs You're right. The test comment documents the CROSS JOIN lowering to a join on true. Your mutation check demonstrates that the test exercises the RelType::Join arm of at_most_one_row.
…xdb 0.4.6 (#233)
grad and vjp differentiate through UNION ALL, as jvp already did (#229).
A loss joining one-row aggregates of constant data is again a scalar
loss (#230). A step that one later step reads once is computed inside it:
xarray-sql's GPT step has 64 steps rather than 77, about 1.5% faster on
DuckDB (#231). The code follows the Google Rust style guide (#234, #239,
#240), with instruction counts within 0.05% of before; a lock a panic
poisoned is no longer read. Nothing public breaks.
