[Doc] Document pip installation on AMD GPUs (ROCm) - #3168
Conversation
The Linux wheels have been fat CUDA+ROCm builds since #2195, but the installation guide never said so: the pip section listed CUDA-only prerequisites, and ROCm users were funneled to the docker/source-build sections even though `pip install tilelang` works out of the box on AMD hosts. Add an "Installing on AMD GPUs (ROCm)" section to the pip chapter covering the two things that differ from the CUDA flow (a host ROCm install is required for runtime hipcc JIT, and a ROCm build of torch must be installed from the matching pytorch.org channel so pip does not pull the default CUDA torch), a copy-paste verify command that prints the detected hip target, and the ROCM_PATH override for hosts with non-standard or multiple HIP toolchains. Cross-link it from the prerequisites list and from the ROCm container-build section, and add a short AMD note to the README installation section. All commands were verified on an MI350X (gfx950, ROCm 7.0.2) host with the PyPI 0.1.14 wheel.

TileLang 0.1.14 PyPI torch-c-dlpack-ext ROCm official instructions CUDA libraries skip
💡 Result:
TileLang officially supports installation via pip [1][2][3]. For standard environments, the recommended installation is simply: pip install tilelang [1][4] Regarding the specific package torch-c-dlpack-ext and its handling in non-CUDA environments (like ROCm): 1. What is torch-c-dlpack-ext? This package provides an Ahead-Of-Time (AOT) compiled module to support faster DLPack conversion [5]. By default, TileLang includes this as a dependency to avoid JIT compilation overhead and to ensure functionality in environments lacking a compiler toolchain [6][7][5]. 2. Why skip it for ROCm? The official documentation for building TileLang from source for ROCm explicitly advises skipping torch-c-dlpack-ext [8][9][10]. This is because the prebuilt wheel for torch-c-dlpack-ext expects CUDA libraries to be present on the system; attempting to install it in a pure ROCm environment may cause issues or unnecessary dependency resolution [8][9][10]. 3. How to skip it? When installing TileLang in an environment where you are managing dependencies manually—typically using --no-deps to avoid automatic installation of unwanted CUDA-related wheels—you should omit torch-c-dlpack-ext and instead manually install only the required runtime dependencies [8][9][10]. Example command for ROCm builds: pip install -e. -v --no-build-isolation --no-deps [8][9] pip install "apache-tvm-ffi>=0.1.6" "z3-solver>=4.13.0" [8][9][10] Always ensure that other critical runtime dependencies (such as apache-tvm-ffi and z3-solver) are installed manually if you use the --no-deps flag to bypass the default installation process [8][9][10].

💡 Result:
When working with software packages that include torch-c-dlpack-ext in a ROCm environment, it is necessary to skip or uninstall this package because its pre-built wheel is typically configured to depend on NVIDIA CUDA libraries [1][2]. If you attempt to use this package in a ROCm-based environment, you may encounter runtime errors such as libtorch_cuda.so missing or not found [1][2]. To resolve this, you should avoid installing the package during your dependency resolution process (e.g., using --no-deps during a pip install) [1][2]. If the package is already present, it should be removed using the command: pip uninstall -y torch-c-dlpack-ext This advice is specifically documented in environments like TileLang, where maintaining a clean ROCm stack is required to prevent pip from automatically pulling in conflicting CUDA-based dependencies [1][2].

Fix the shared ROCm pip dependency flow.
For Python 3.10–3.13, pip install tilelang installs torch-c-dlpack-ext, whose CUDA-dependent wheel may cause libtorch_cuda.so errors on ROCm. Document a complete ROCm flow that uses --no-deps and installs the required non-Torch dependencies explicitly. Apply it to both docs/get_started/Installation.md and README.md.
