Diagnose unsupported span params on test methods - #7679
Test methods using C# 13 params ReadOnlySpan<T> or params Span<T> currently reach data conversion or invocation failures. Add error TUnit0077 at the parameter with guidance to use a params array, plus diagnostic documentation.
This implements the explicit unsupported-parameter diagnostic alternative in #7462. Spans cannot be boxed for reflection invocation, so rejecting these declarations for both execution modes keeps the contract consistent. Array and collection-interface params remain accepted, and helper methods are unaffected.
Validation:
Targeted TestMethodParametersAnalyzerTests on net10.0: 7 passed, including typed rows with generic methods and both span types.
Separate SDK Roslyn validation: valid C# 13 typed-row declarations compile without compiler errors and produce exactly TUnit0077 for both span types. The repository verifier uses Roslyn 4.8, so regression tests explicitly expect its CS0225 compiler errors as well.
TUnit.PublicAPI on net10.0: 20 passed.
git diff --check passed.
Existing restore/build warnings were reported on their tracking issues #7410, #7585 and #7412. No generator output or runtime reflection paths changed.
Added a diagnostic that flags test methods using params Span<T> or params ReadOnlySpan<T>, which are unsupported during test execution. Use params arrays instead.
Documentation
Added a reference page explaining the diagnostic and its recommended alternative. Ordinary helper methods can still use span parameters.
The analyzer now reports TUnit0077 for test methods with params Span<T> or params ReadOnlySpan<T>. The change adds analyzer tests and a reference page linked from the Reference sidebar.

Explanation
The title "Diagnose unsupported span params on test methods" matches the main change. The PR adds diagnostic TUnit0077, which reports test-method parameters declared as params ReadOnlySpan<T> or params Span<T> as unsupported. The title names the diagnostic action, the unsupported span params, and the test-method scope. It is specific and concise, and it does not contain vague terms. The changeset also adds docs, a resource string, a descriptor, and tests, which support the same change.

Explanation
The directly linked issue #7462 allows a specific unsupported-parameter diagnostic as an alternative to span packing. The analyzer adds error TUnit0077 for params Span<T> and params ReadOnlySpan<T> on test methods, reports it at the parameter, and recommends a params array. The tests cover both span types, typed rows, generic test methods, accepted array and interface params, and unaffected helper methods. Documentation explains the restriction for both execution modes.

I’m a rabbit with notes in my paws, I hop through the analyzer’s new clauses. Span params raise a clear signal, Array params fit the example, And docs show the rule without pause.
Review of the TUnit0077 span params diagnostic. This is a small, focused change that follows analyzer conventions, with rule, resources, docs, sidebar, release tracking and tests all included. No blocking issues. Suggestions: (1) GetTypeByMetadataName runs up to twice per parameter of every test method. Cache the Span and ReadOnlySpan symbols once per compilation in a CompilationStartAction, and check IsParams first. (2) Extract an IsSpanType helper in place of the nested boolean expression. (3) The BOM on line 1 of TestMethodParametersAnalyzer.cs was removed, which is unrelated noise. (4) Nit: in DiagnosticIds.cs, 0077 is placed before 0076. In AnalyzerReleases.Unshipped.md, the blank line before the 0077 row may break the table, so keep the rows contiguous. Tests cover both span types, the generic typed-row case, and the negatives (array, interface, non-test helper). Expecting CS0225 because the verifier uses Roslyn 4.8 is a reasonable workaround. Overall this is a good, low-risk change once the symbol lookup is cached.
Cache Span and ReadOnlySpan symbols once per compilation, preserve the IsParams guard, and extract IsSpanType.
Restore the analyzer file BOM, order diagnostic IDs, and keep the release-notes rows contiguous.
Validation: all 7 TestMethodParametersAnalyzerTests passed on net10.0; git diff --check passed. Existing restore/build warnings remain tracked as noted in the PR body. The release-notes review thread is resolved. The PR remains draft pending fresh reviews of this head.
Looks good. This is a small, focused change that does what the description says.
The descriptor, diagnostic ID, resources, release notes, docs page and sidebar entry are all wired up consistently.
Resolving Span<T> and ReadOnlySpan<T> once in RegisterCompilationStartAction is the right pattern. It avoids a metadata lookup per symbol. IsSpanType uses OriginalDefinition with SymbolEqualityComparer, and null types are handled safely.
The check runs only after the early return for non-test methods. Helper methods are unaffected, and the second test covers that.
Tests cover both span types and confirm that array and IEnumerable<T> params are still accepted.
Minor, non-blocking:
The test expectations rely on the Roslyn 4.8 CS0225 compiler errors. They will break when the verifier moves to a newer Roslyn. A comment already notes this, which is enough for now.
parameter.Locations.FirstOrDefault() can be null. Diagnostic.Create accepts that, so it is fine. Falling back to the method location, as the neighbouring diagnostic does, would be slightly more consistent.
Current-head review disposition: Claude and Codex approve 56c4f7e with no blocking findings. The Roslyn 4.8 expectation is documented next to the test and can be updated when that verifier is upgraded. The nullable diagnostic location is accepted by Diagnostic.Create and the test parameters have source locations, so the optional method-location fallback needs no change. All review threads are resolved. Marking ready to start CI and the ready-for-review Claude run.
This is a small, focused PR and I found no blocking issues.
What I checked
The analyzer resolves Span<T> and ReadOnlySpan<T> once per compilation in RegisterCompilationStartAction, and the per-symbol check is cheap. It uses OriginalDefinition with SymbolEqualityComparer, so it handles generic instantiations correctly. If the types don't exist in the target framework, the comparison against null is harmless.
The check runs after the existing test-method guard, so helper methods are unaffected. The tests cover this.
It reports at the parameter name, which is the right place for a fix.
The descriptor, DiagnosticIds, Resources.resx, AnalyzerReleases.Unshipped.md, the docs page and the sidebar entry are all consistent.
Rejecting span params in both modes fits the AOT and trimming constraints, because spans can't be boxed for reflection invocation.
Minor suggestions (non-blocking)
The tests hard-code CS0225 compiler errors because the verifier uses Roslyn 4.8. Add a comment, or a tracked issue, to remove these expectations when the verifier is upgraded. Otherwise the tests will break at that point.
Consider a code fix that rewrites params ReadOnlySpan<T> to params T[]. The message already tells users to do this, and it would make the diagnostic actionable. It can be a follow-up.

Add valid C# 13 coverage for TUnit0077.
The changed analyzer cases expect CS0225, so they do not test the valid compiler path. The existing Roslyn 4.14 span fixture does not invoke TestMethodParametersAnalyzer. Add a committed analyzer validation case that compiles both span forms without compiler errors and asserts exactly TUnit0077.

Add coverage for non-params span parameters on test methods.
The current tests do not protect the analyzer's explicit params-only scope. Add ordinary Span<T> and ReadOnlySpan<T> test-method parameters and expect NoDataSourceProvided only. The test will catch removal of the IsParams guard without identifying a production failure in the current code.
