Preserve keyword escapes in generated type expressions - #7675
Generated expressions such as typeof(global::event.Payload) fail to compile when a namespace or type is a C# keyword. Use dedicated escaped C# display formats for shared type-expression generation, including open generic types and concrete metadata types, while retaining the raw formats used for runtime names and identity comparisons.
Also sanitize keyword escape characters in generated test and hook source names, which otherwise fail Roslyn's hint-name validation. Compilation regressions cover metadata-backed attribute type values, arrays, open and closed generics, test registration, instance construction, and hooks in keyword namespaces and types.
Validation: SDK 10.0.403; single-node net10.0 build and the full core source-generator suite passed (375 passed, 1 skipped). Existing snapshots are unchanged. The initial parallel build hit the macOS MSB4166 failure tracked in #7468; the restore also reported the existing Pkcs advisory tracked in #7412. Other target frameworks remain for CI.
Generated code now correctly formats type names that use C# keywords as identifiers, helping ensure emitted expressions compile while runtime type names remain unchanged.
Generated test sources now distinguish escaped keyword namespaces from similarly named underscore namespaces, preventing them from sharing a source name.
The source generators now use keyword-escaped formats for generated C# type expressions. Filename sanitization replaces @ with _, and generated test-source names include a stable hash when the type’s C# display identity contains @.

A rabbit checks each type name bright, And keeps the keyword escapes right. @event gets a safer sign, While hashes help each hint align. The source compiles; the paths look clear, A happy hop for names this year.
The change looks correct and well-scoped. Adding dedicated CSharpType and CSharpNonGenericType formats that include EscapeKeywordIdentifiers fixes typeof(global::event.Payload), and the raw formats stay in place for runtime names and identity comparisons. PropertyInjectionSourceGenerator now reuses the shared format instead of keeping its own copy, which removes a duplicate. The regression tests cover metadata-backed attributes, arrays, open and closed generics, and hooks, and they check that the generated code compiles.
Non-blocking observations:
HookMetadataGenerator.SanitizeForFileName and FileNameHelper.SanitizeForFileName now both strip @, but they are still two separate sanitizers. Consolidating them would stop them drifting apart again. This is a small follow-up, not a blocker.
GloballyQualified() now returns escaped output. I checked that its output goes into generated code, not into hint names or comparison keys. A future caller that uses it as a dictionary key or a hint name would pick up the @. The new XML doc comment helps, but a name like ToCSharpTypeExpression would make the intent clearer.
DynamicTestsGenerator builds its hint name from className. I did not check that this value is free of @, so it is worth a quick look.
I did not run the tests locally. The PR description reports the core source-generator suite passing and the existing snapshots unchanged.
Disposition of Claude’s non-blocking observations: retain the separate sanitizers because hook filenames and test-source identifiers have different formatting needs; hooks already hash the original identity. Keep GloballyQualified’s existing name for this focused fix; its XML documentation now states that it emits C# expressions. DynamicTestsGenerator takes className from INamedTypeSymbol.Name, which does not contain keyword escape markers, so this change does not introduce @ into its hint names.
Validation of a461d7e: net10.0 core source-generator suite passed (376 passed, 1 skipped), including snapshots with no changes. Other target frameworks remain for CI.
I found no blocking issues. The fix addresses the root cause and is well covered by tests.
What I checked
DisplayFormats.CSharpType and CSharpNonGenericType add EscapeKeywordIdentifiers in one place. GloballyQualified, GetTypeOfExpression and the property-injection format now share them. This removes the duplicated ad-hoc format in PropertyInjectionSourceGenerator.
The raw formats are kept for runtime names and identity comparisons. A test asserts that these stay unescaped (event.class, global::event.class).
Hint names:
FileNameHelper.GetSafeTestSourceName now hashes the escaped identity when it contains @. That stops @event.Subject and _event.Subject from colliding, and a test covers it.
The hook SanitizeForFileName replaces @ without a hash, which is safe. Hook names already append a stable hash of the full identity in GetUniqueName.
The tests are good. They compile generated output for attribute type values, arrays, open and closed generics, test registration and hooks.
Minor suggestions (non-blocking)
GetSafeTestSourceName hashes only when identity.Contains('@'). This keeps existing snapshots unchanged, which is a sensible trade-off. A comment saying that is the reason would help, so nobody later "simplifies" it into always hashing.
SanitizeForFileName is duplicated between FileNameHelper and HookMetadataGenerator, and the two copies have already drifted (a char-based version and a Replace chain). Sharing one helper would keep future fixes like this one in a single place.
Other generators may still format types for generated code with the raw FullyQualified* formats. A grep for remaining FullyQualifiedGenericWithGlobalPrefix usages in code-emitting paths could catch similar keyword failures. A follow-up issue would be enough.
CI on the other target frameworks is still pending. Otherwise this looks good to merge.
Both Claude and Codex have positive verdicts for a461d7e, and the collision thread is resolved.
Disposition of the latest non-blocking suggestions: the existing comment explains that hashing the original escaped identity prevents sanitization collisions; retain the conditional hashing to preserve ordinary generated names and snapshots. Keep the separate sanitizers for this focused fix, as already dispositioned above. I checked all FullyQualifiedGenericWithGlobalPrefix references in src/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator at this head: only its declaration and the CSharpType definition remain, so there are no remaining direct code-emitting callers of that raw format in this generator.
Marking ready to start CI and the ready-for-review Claude run. Auto-merge must wait for that fresh Claude run and its review disposition.

The change is focused and correct. Two small notes follow.
Fix:CSharpType and CSharpNonGenericType are new escaped formats, and GloballyQualified and GetTypeOfExpression now use them. The raw formats stay in place for runtime names and identity comparisons. PropertyInjectionSourceGenerator now reuses the shared format instead of keeping its own copy.
Hint names:FileNameHelper.GetSafeTestSourceName adds a stable hash when the identity contains @. That keeps @event.Subject and _event.Subject from colliding. Hook names already append a hash of their identity, so the @ to _ replacement there is enough.
Tests: they compile the generated expressions. They cover metadata attributes, arrays, open and closed generics, test and hook generation, and distinct source names. The snapshots are unchanged, which fits the hash being added only when @ is present.
Two points to consider:
Sanitizer coverage.@ is now handled in two separate sanitizers, FileNameHelper.SanitizeForFileName and HookMetadataGenerator.SanitizeForFileName. Other hint-name paths, such as the property-injection and other generators' file names, may still pass raw @ through. Consider a single shared sanitizer so future generators get this behaviour by default.
Hash scope. The hash is only added when @ appears in the display string. That is fine, but the check reads the same string the hash is computed from, so a short comment saying the condition is deliberately narrow, to keep existing snapshot names stable, would help.
Neither point blocks the merge. I did not run the tests myself. The PR description reports the core source-generator suite passing.
The earlier waiting blocker is cleared: Claude run 42099967806 completed successfully. I handled the new CodeRabbit finding in 39aad11; the inline reply has reproduction and validation evidence.
Disposition of the ready-for-review Claude observations: retain the separate sanitizers for this focused fix, as explained previously; property injection now explicitly uses raw names for identifier fragments and escaped names for type expressions. Retain the narrow hash condition and existing collision explanation to keep ordinary generated names and snapshots stable. Neither suggestion requires a further change for this PR. The new head requires fresh automated review and CI before auto-merge can be armed.
The change is sound and well targeted. It adds dedicated escaped formats (CSharpType, CSharpNonGenericType), routes GloballyQualified() and GetTypeOfExpression through them, and keeps the raw formats for runtime names and identity. I grepped the generator for GloballyQualified() feeding Replace, hashing or splitting, and found no other identifier or identity consumers that the @ would now leak into. I did not build or run the tests.
What looks good:
GetSafeClassName in the property injection generator now uses the raw format, so @ does not end up in identifier fragments.
FileNameHelper appends a stable hash of the escaped identity when it contains @. This stops @event.X and _event.X from colliding after sanitization. Types without keywords keep their existing hint names, which is why the snapshots are unchanged.
The tests cover real compilation of the emitted code, including metadata-backed attributes, arrays, open generics, test and hook registration, and property injection. They also include the collision case.
Minor suggestions, none blocking:
identity.Contains('@') only detects keyword escapes in the full display string. That is correct today, because @ is not otherwise valid in a type name. A short comment saying so would help. Please also confirm that GetStableHashCode is deterministic across runs, so that hint names do not churn.
HookMetadataGenerator.SanitizeForFileName replaces @ with _, so it has the same collision as the test source names (@event vs _event hooks in the same assembly). Both are unlikely, but this is the one place the collision fix was not applied. The two SanitizeForFileName implementations could share one helper that does the hashing, so that fixes do not need to be made twice.
GlobalTypeNameFormat in PropertyInjectionSourceGenerator is now a pure alias of DisplayFormats.CSharpType. Using DisplayFormats.CSharpType directly would remove an indirection.
Overall this is a good fix and I would approve it.
Run 42099967806 completed successfully; the earlier waiting blocker no longer holds. The current head is 39aad11, with completed positive Claude and Codex reviews, resolved review threads, and all CI green.
Disposition of the latest Claude suggestions:
FileNameHelper.GetStableHashCode (lines 160–172) implements FNV-1a with fixed constants and unchecked arithmetic, so its output is deterministic across processes and platforms. Its existing XML documentation explicitly describes that guarantee. Retain the narrow escape check and existing collision comment to preserve ordinary hint names and snapshots.
Hook names already hash the original identity: HookMetadataGenerator.GetUniqueName (lines 578–580) appends FileNameHelper.GetStableHashCode(identity) after sanitization. Both class source hints (line 225) and hook member names (lines 566–571) use it. Consequently @event and _event hook identities remain distinct; no additional collision fix is needed. Retain the separate sanitizers for their different output formats in this focused PR.
Retain the private GlobalTypeNameFormat alias as a non-blocking style choice; it points at the shared escaped format and introduces no behavior difference.
