Attribute factories for attributes in keyword namespaces emitted invalid C# such as global::event.class.MarkerAttribute. Preserve keyword escaping in both syntax-backed and metadata-backed attribute constructor names, including generic type arguments, using a dedicated C# display format. Runtime reflection name formatting is unchanged.

Added regression tests for both writer paths that verify escaped names and compile the generated initializers. Both tests failed before the fix.

Validation: core-generator suite on SDK 10.0.403 / net10.0: 374 passed, 1 skipped, including snapshot tests; no snapshot changes. Existing restore/build warnings are tracked by #7412 and #7410. Other target frameworks remain for CI.

Closes #7668

Summary by CodeRabbit

Walkthrough

Attribute initializer generation now formats attribute type names with keyword escaping and fully qualified generic names. A regression test covers syntax-backed and syntax-free generation and checks that the generated code has no compilation errors.

Changes: Keyword-safe attribute type formatting

Explanation

Directly linked issue #7668 has one coding requirement: keep keyword escaping in generated attribute factory class names for both AttributeWriter.GetAttributeObjectInitializer (syntax-backed) and WriteAttributeWithoutSyntax (syntax-free), and keep runtime reflection names unescaped. The diff at head, compared with merge base 6bc28cd, meets this. Both paths now call attributeData.AttributeClass!.ToDisplayString(AttributeTypeFormat) in place of GloballyQualified(). AttributeTypeFormat is DisplayFormats.FullyQualifiedGenericWithGlobalPrefix plus SymbolDisplayMiscellaneousOptions.EscapeKeywordIdentifiers. I confirmed in DisplayFormats.cs that the base format includes the global prefix, qualifies by namespace and containing type, and includes type parameters. So namespace parts, the class name, and generic type arguments are emitted as global::@event.@class.MarkerAttribute<global::@event.@class.@struct>. DisplayFormats.cs and the reflection-facing paths are not changed. The new test KeywordNamespacesCompileInAttributeInitializers covers both paths (parameterized with [Arguments]). It asserts the escaped expected string and parses and compiles the generated initializer with no error diagnostics. The PR reports that both tests failed before the fix and that the core-generator suite passed. I did not run the tests. The result rests on source inspection and the reported validation. Issue #7666 (inaccessible type values in attribute arguments) is excluded, and no change for it appears in the diff.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole-PR diff against merge base 6bc28cd touches two files. src/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator/CodeGenerators/Writers/AttributeWriter.cs adds AttributeTypeFormat and replaces the two GloballyQualified() calls with it. This change directly implements #7668. tests/TUnit.Core.SourceGenerator.Tests/AttributeInitializerCacheTests.cs adds a regression test for the same two paths. Supporting tests are in scope. The comment in the code states the reason for the separate format: reflection names must keep raw identifiers. No other behavior change appears in the diff. The PR description also reports no snapshot changes. No unrelated change was found.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 2 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Review: looks good.

The fix is small and targeted. A dedicated AttributeTypeFormat adds EscapeKeywordIdentifiers to the existing fully-qualified format. It is applied at both attribute-name sites (syntax-backed and WriteAttributeWithoutSyntax), so generic type arguments are escaped too. Runtime reflection name formatting is untouched, which avoids the risk of putting @ into strings used for reflection.

The regression test covers both writer paths. It asserts the exact output and compiles the generated initializer. That is stronger than a string check alone.

Minor, non-blocking notes:

  • Other GloballyQualified() uses elsewhere in the generators that emit C# for user types may have the same keyword-namespace problem. It would be worth a follow-up audit, or a shared GloballyQualifiedForCode helper, so the escaping isn't fixed one call site at a time.
  • Attribute named argument values that are types (typeof(...)) go through different code, so I didn't check them here. If they use GloballyQualified, they would have the same issue.

I didn't run the tests. I only read the diff, and the PR reports that the core-generator suite passes with no snapshot changes. No blocking issues.

The previous blocker is cleared: ready-for-review Claude run 42095582565 succeeded on head 7e8655a. Re-read every review surface: Claude and Codex approve this head, there are no inline comments or review threads, and the optional escaping audit remains tracked in #7674. CodeRabbit's generic docstring coverage warning is non-blocking; this small formatting fix already has a rationale comment and compilation regression tests.

The only failing checks were Windows AOT and Engine tests in run 42095581427, attempt 1. Both failed during restore, before testing, with nuget.org transport connections forcibly closed (Microsoft.CodeAnalysis.Common 4.7.0, Microsoft.NET.ILLink.Tasks 10.0.14, and EmptyFiles 4.4.0). Ubuntu counterparts passed. Reran only failed jobs once for this demonstrated infrastructure failure; attempt 2 is queued. No test failures were bypassed and no source change is needed on this evidence.

The current-head auto-merge gate passed and squash auto-merge is armed. Waiting for run 42095581427; if the infrastructure failure repeats, do not rerun again: inspect fresh main and follow the skill's stale-CI/rebase route. No on-hold label is needed for this self-ending wait.

Review

Small, focused fix. Both attribute-name paths (GetAttributeObjectInitializerInner and WriteAttributeWithoutSyntax) now use a dedicated display format with EscapeKeywordIdentifiers. This is the right approach: it leaves the shared GloballyQualified() and the reflection-name formatting untouched, so the blast radius is limited to attribute constructor expressions. No remaining GloballyQualified calls in AttributeWriter.cs for attribute type names.

The regression test covers both writer paths, including a generic attribute with a keyword-named type argument. It also compiles the generated initializer instead of only string-matching it, which is the check that matters here. The PR says no snapshots changed.

Optional follow-up: other generator writers may build C# expressions from GloballyQualified() for types in keyword namespaces. If you want to prevent this bug class, consider making the escaped format the default for expression-context naming, with a separate explicit one for reflection names. That is not needed for this PR.

LGTM.
