Avoid mock predicate conversion local name collisions - #7655
Predicate setup overloads failed to compile when a parameter such as __fa_value collided with the conversion local for value. Reserve all parameter identifiers and each allocated local, adding an invariant numeric suffix when needed, and use the chosen name in matcher construction.
Adds a generator snapshot covering chained collisions and escaped identifiers, plus a runtime regression verifying compilation and argument matching. Existing generator snapshots remain unchanged.
Validation: all 233 mock source-generator tests passed on net10.0; the targeted PredicateLocalCollisionTests runtime test passed. The regression reproduced CS0136 before the fix. Runtime compilation coverage uses the SDK compiler because the generator test harness's Roslyn predates extension blocks.
Fixed mock generation when method parameter names conflict with names used for predicate matching. Predicate-based setups now match the intended arguments, including when identifiers are escaped, methods are generic, or parameters are passed by reference.
Tests
Added coverage for matching and nonmatching arguments in methods with colliding parameter names, including escaped identifiers and generic methods with output parameters.
The mock source generator now allocates predicate-conversion locals that do not collide with method parameter or type-parameter names. Generator snapshots and runtime tests cover colliding and escaped identifiers.
Predicate conversion locals use unique names that account for method parameter and type-parameter names. Matcher arrays reference the allocated names.

A rabbit checks each name in line No local shadows another sign Escaped names keep their place Predicates match at the right pace The mock now hops through tests just fine
The fix is correct and I found no blocking issues.
Fix: Every parameter name (with the @ prefix stripped) is reserved up front in usedNames. Each predicate local then gets a numeric suffix until HashSet.Add succeeds. The chosen name is stored in predicateLocals and reused when the matchers array is built, so the declaration and the use can't drift apart.
Culture: The suffix is formatted with CultureInfo.InvariantCulture, and the System.Globalization using already exists.
Tests: The snapshot covers chained collisions (__fa_value, __fa_value_1, and the resulting __fa_value_2) and escaped identifiers. The runtime test checks that each predicate is matched against the right argument.
Existing snapshots: They are unchanged, so output only changes when there is a collision.
Nit, non-blocking: The locals still share a scope with other generated names such as matchers and mock. A parameter named matchers would already collide, which was the case before this PR. You could seed usedNames with those fixed names so the whole scope is covered. This isn't needed for this PR.
Both Claude and Codex approved head 07f7cd9, with no inline threads or blocking findings. The pre-existing fixed-name collision noted by Claude is tracked separately in #7657.
Marked ready with the head unchanged. Waiting for the promotion-triggered Claude review run 42056883143 and CI; auto-merge must be armed through Enable-AutoMerge.ps1 after that review passes and its comment is read.
The fix is correct and well scoped. I found no blocking issues.
All parameter names are reserved first, with the leading @ stripped. Each __fa_ local is then allocated against that set, with an invariant-culture numeric suffix when it collides. This removes the CS0136 collision.
The chosen name is recorded in predicateLocals and reused when building the matcher array, so the declaration and the use can't drift apart. That is better than recomputing __fa_{rawName} in two places, as the old code did.
Allocation is deterministic, so the snapshot output is stable. CultureInfo is already imported.
The snapshot covers chained collisions (__fa_value, __fa_value_1) and an escaped @__fa_event. The runtime test checks that each predicate matches the right argument.
Non-blocking suggestions
If more generated locals are added to this method later, a small shared "unique identifier allocator" helper would stop each builder from re-implementing this loop. That isn't needed now.
The snapshot is large (about 320 lines) for a naming fix. It's fine, but a narrower assertion on the setup extension class would be easier to review.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Reserve in-scope type parameter names.
For void Send<__fa_value_1>(__fa_value_1 value, out int __fa_value), the out parameter is omitted from the setup signature, but this set still reserves its name. The allocator therefore selects __fa_value_1, which conflicts with the method type parameter and causes CS0412. The previous local, __fa_value, did not conflict in this case. (learn.microsoft.com)
Reserve the in-scope type parameter names before allocating predicate locals.

Fixed CodeRabbit's generic type parameter collision in 0df5978: predicate locals now reserve both method and mocked-type generic parameter names. Added the reported out-parameter/generic regression to the generator snapshot and runtime matching test. All 234 generator tests and the targeted PredicateLocalCollisionTests runtime test passed on net10.0. Rebased onto current main, including #7658, and returned to draft for fresh reviews.
The prior waiting run 42056883143 passed with a positive Claude review. The Apple smoke job subsequently timed out during the tvOS build; diagnostics and reproduction are tracked in #7664. This push starts fresh checks; no rerun was requested.
Review dispositions: Claude's optional allocator-helper and narrower-snapshot suggestions are deferred as non-blocking refactoring; the explicit snapshot covers all generated references. CodeRabbit's docstring-coverage warning does not require public documentation for this private emission implementation; the allocation comment now explicitly describes the parameter and type-parameter reservation. The earlier fixed-name collision is delivered by merged #7658.
The fix looks correct and well-scoped. I only read the diff. I didn't build the PR or run its tests.
What I checked
Parameter names and class and method type-parameter names are reserved before any __fa_* local is allocated. @ is trimmed first, so escaped identifiers such as @__fa_event collide correctly.
Suffixing with _N in a loop over HashSet.Add also handles chained collisions: __fa_value, then __fa_value_1, then __fa_value_2. Each allocated local is reserved too, so locals can't collide with each other.
predicateLocals[idx] is keyed by parameter index. The matcher loop reads the same name the declaration emitted, so the two can't drift apart.
CultureInfo.InvariantCulture keeps the output deterministic.
The snapshot covers chained collisions, escaped names, a generic type parameter and an out parameter. The runtime test checks that the generated code compiles and matches arguments.
Minor suggestions, non-blocking
Other code in the generator may build __-prefixed locals with the same pattern. If so, pull the "reserve names, then allocate a unique suffix" logic into a small shared helper, for example UniqueNameAllocator. A one-off fix here would otherwise leave the same bug latent elsewhere. A quick grep for other __\{rawName\} interpolations is worth doing.
Locals like __fa_value could also collide with generated locals in the enclosing scope, such as matchers or setup. If those are fixed names, seed usedNames with them too.
The previous waiting run 42056883143 completed successfully. Current head 0df5978 has positive Claude and Codex verdicts, no inline threads, and no blocking findings. CodeRabbit's type-parameter finding is fixed in this head. Claude's optional shared allocator suggestion remains a non-blocking refactoring; fixed scope identifiers are already handled by merged #7658 and cannot collide with the __fa_ prefix used here.
Marked ready with the head unchanged, starting CI and the promotion-triggered Claude review. Auto-merge must be armed with Enable-AutoMerge.ps1 after that new Claude run passes and its comment is read. No code changes or test reruns were needed in this unit.
Review: Avoid mock predicate conversion local name collisions
The fix is correct and well scoped. I found no blocking issues.
Reservation set:usedNames is seeded with all parameter names, with @ trimmed. It also includes class-level and method-level type parameters. Each allocated local is added through usedNames.Add, so chained collisions such as __fa_value, __fa_value_1 and the generated __fa___fa_value resolve without duplicates.
Matcher construction: the predicateLocals[idx] map ensures the matcher array uses the name that was actually chosen. The old code recomputed __fa_{rawName}, which is what let the name drift.
Determinism: the OrderBy ordering and CultureInfo.InvariantCulture formatting keep the snapshots stable.
Tests: the snapshot covers chained collisions, an escaped identifier, and a generic method with an out parameter. The runtime regression guards compilation and argument matching. The PR description says existing snapshots are unchanged.
Optional follow-ups:
The generated local is declared in the same scope as the extension method's own identifiers, such as mock, matchers and _. A parameter named matchers would still collide in the emitted var matchers = .... That predates this PR, but seeding usedNames with those fixed identifiers (or extracting a small shared "unique local name" helper) would close the whole class of bug. Other emitters might benefit from the same helper.
Consider adding a parameter named matchers or mock to the snapshot test to confirm how that case behaves.
Add a generic mocked-type collision case to the snapshot fixture.
The current fixture covers a method type parameter, but not a mocked-type parameter. Add a generic interface whose parameter is named __fa_value and call Mock.Of<IRepo<int>>(). The generated snapshot should contain __fa_value_1 for the predicate local. Removing the model.TypeParameters reservation would then change the snapshot and expose the collision.

Run 42069400826 completed successfully on current head 0df5978, so the earlier wait has ended. Read all conversation comments, reviews, and inline surfaces; there are no review threads. Claude's promotion review explicitly reports no blockers, and Codex's current-head summary is completed with no findings. All current CI checks have passed or are intentionally skipped.
Review dispositions: Claude's fixed-name concern is already addressed by merged #7658: GetSetupIdentifier checks method/type parameters before choosing mock, matchers, and other fixed identifiers, and its suffixes cannot overlap the __fa_ prefix. That PR also adds fixed-identifier snapshot and runtime coverage, so duplicating those cases here is unnecessary. The shared allocator and narrower-snapshot suggestions remain optional refactoring. CodeRabbit's additional mocked-type generic snapshot case is a non-blocking coverage suggestion; the implementation explicitly reserves model.TypeParameters alongside the method parameters, and this PR already covers the reported method-generic regression. Keeping the focused, approved fix avoids changing the head solely for optional coverage. The private-emitter docstring warning was dispositioned earlier and is not a repository requirement.
Proceeding through the repository merge wrapper with the unchanged approved head. No code changes or local test reruns were needed; generator/runtime validation from the previous unit and the now-green hosted CI cover this head.
