Fix xUnit proper-set migration operands and strictness - #7653
The xUnit migration code fix lost strictness for ProperSubset and ProperSuperset. Both conversions now capture the arguments once in source order, then assert the strict relation using the actual set's comparer.
For example, ProperSubset(expected, actual) captures the arguments as ISet<T> tuple elements, then checks setArguments.Item2 != null && setArguments.Item2.IsProperSubsetOf(setArguments.Item1) with Satisfies. ProperSuperset uses IsProperSupersetOf. A tuple preserves evaluation order, including out var declarations, without changing which set supplies the comparer. Reversed named arguments retain their source order, null/default literals retain their contextual types, and generated lambda names avoid source identifiers. Capturing the converted parameter types also preserves explicit interface implementations and contextual typing for conditional and switch expressions.
Tests cover generated output, out-variable scope, named arguments, null/default arguments, and runtime parity with xUnit when comparers differ. Four compilation-checked regressions cover custom sets with explicit interface implementations for both relations and both argument orders. Both differing-comparer regressions fail as xUnit does and check each argument evaluates once in source order. Existing set assertion tests cover strictness for equal and unequal sets.
The xUnit migration now converts proper-subset and proper-superset assertions to strict TUnit assertions with corrected operand direction. It captures arguments in source order and handles named arguments, null and default values, and set comparers.
Both conversions use a shared implementation. It captures arguments in source order, uses a named actual argument when present, and emits a null-guarded strict relation.
Tests check strict assertion output, out-variable evaluation order, named and positional arguments, null and default values, and comparer behavior, including runtime cases.
The named-argument tests use valid xUnit calls. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue [#7431] requires correct operand direction and strictness for ProperSubset and ProperSuperset. ConvertProperSet captures both arguments once in source order, identifies the xUnit actual argument, and applies IsProperSubsetOf or IsProperSupersetOf to that argument. The obsolete TODO output is removed. Tests cover generated output, named and null/default arguments, out var scope, comparer behavior, explicit interface implementations, runtime parity, and strict unequal/equal set behavior. The reported analyzer test run passed.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The production change is limited to the two proper-set migration methods and their shared conversion helper. The test changes directly validate the requirements in [#7431], including operand order, strictness, evaluation order, contextual types, comparer behavior, and compilation. No unrelated production behavior or unrelated test area is demonstrated.

A rabbit checks each set with care, And keeps the strict relation there. The operands follow their source order, Named arguments stay in their border. The tests now hop through each case, While comparers keep their place.
The fix is correct. xUnit's Assert.ProperSubset(expectedSuperset, actual) asserts that actual is a proper subset of the first argument. The old code used the expected set as the subject, so the operands were swapped, and it used the non-strict IsSubsetOf/IsSupersetOf, so equal sets passed. The new output, Assert.That(actual).IsProperSubsetOf(expectedSuperset), fixes both problems. The superset case mirrors it.
IsProperSubsetOf and IsProperSupersetOf exist on SetAssertionBase and are in the public API snapshots, so the generated code will compile.
The fixtures now check both the operand order and the strict method.
Dropping the TODO comments is right, because the conversion is now exact.
One minor point, not blocking. SetAssertionBase only covers set types. If xUnit lets a non-set IEnumerable through, the migrated code would not compile. The old IsSubsetOf had the same limitation, so this isn't a regression.
I did not build or run the tests. The PR description reports the analyzer tests and SetAssertionTests passing.
Fixed the evaluation-order finding in fdf9c85 using the inverse strict relation. Both arguments now evaluate once in their original order; new out-variable regressions cover both conversions. Migration tests: 120 passed, 1 skipped.
Claude's non-blocking set-type concern does not require a change here: the xUnit proper-set signatures take sets, and these conversions retain strict set assertions.
Semantics check out. xUnit ProperSubset(expectedSuperset, actual) asserts that actual is a proper subset of expectedSuperset. Assert.That(expectedSuperset).IsProperSupersetOf(actual) is the same relation, and ProperSuperset maps to IsProperSubsetOf the same way.
Using the inverse relation keeps the original argument evaluation order. The new out var regression tests cover this case, and the old IsSubsetOf/IsSupersetOf conversions did not.
Both assertions exist in TUnit.Assertions (CollectionChecks.CheckIsProperSubsetOf and CheckIsProperSupersetOf). Strictness is now enforced, so the TODO comments are rightly gone.
The tests are updated and the new tests are focused.
I found no issues. I read the diff and the assertion definitions and did not run the tests.
Both Claude and Codex approved head fdf9c85, and all review threads are resolved. Marked ready with the head unchanged. Promotion started CI and Claude review run 42048366644; auto-merge must wait for that review to pass and its findings to be read.
xUnit ProperSubset(expectedSuperset, actual) becomes Assert.That(expectedSuperset).IsProperSupersetOf(actual). This is the exact inverse strict relation.
xUnit ProperSuperset(expectedSubset, actual) becomes Assert.That(expectedSubset).IsProperSubsetOf(actual). This is also correct.
Keeping the original argument order preserves evaluation order, including the out var case. The IsProperSubsetOf and IsProperSupersetOf assertions exist in CollectionChecks, so the generated code compiles. Dropping the TODO comments is right because strictness is now preserved. The updated fixtures and the two out var regression tests cover the change. I didn't run the tests.
No blocking issues. Optionally, ConvertProperSubset and ConvertProperSuperset are now near-identical and could share a helper, but that isn't needed.

The earlier blocker is cleared: Claude review run 42048366644 completed successfully and its review has no blocking findings. CodeRabbit's subsequent comparer finding was valid and is fixed in fa0b681 (see the resolved inline thread). The PR description now explains the final tuple capture approach; it preserves the issue's intended actual/expected relation, strictness, and evaluation order without requiring a literal spelling of the assertion.
The optional helper suggestion is addressed by sharing ConvertProperSet. The docstring coverage suggestion is dispositioned without adding XML comments to migration test methods or private converters: the repository does not require that coverage threshold, and the semantic requirements are documented in the converter comments and regression tests.
The new head needs fresh automated review and CI. Auto-merge remains disabled until those review verdicts and findings are checked.
The change looks correct. The old conversion silently weakened ProperSubset and ProperSuperset to the non-strict relation and left a TODO. The new conversion asserts IsProperSubsetOf and IsProperSupersetOf and removes the TODO.
Evaluation order: capturing both arguments in a tuple evaluates each once, in source order. That keeps out var scoping working.
Comparer: the actual set's comparer is used, which matches xUnit. The runtime-parity test covers the case where the two sets have different comparers.
Name collisions: the lambda parameter name is picked to avoid existing source identifiers. _sourceIdentifiers is the cache already used at line 373, so sharing it is fine.
Literals: null, default and target-typed new arguments get an explicit cast, because a tuple element has no target type to infer from.
Named arguments: reversed order is handled.
Minor, non-blocking points:
The Capture helper only casts null, default and new() when the converted type is known. Other target-typed expressions, such as a conditional expression or a switch expression with no natural type, could still fail to compile after conversion. Those are rare for set arguments.
Only args[0] is checked for the actual: name. That is enough in practice, since a named argument at position 0 means they were reordered.
ConvertProperSubset and ConvertProperSuperset now each just call ConvertProperSet, so the code is DRY. The TwoPhase file may be mirrored elsewhere, for example for NUnit or MSTest. If an equivalent conversion exists there, it may need the same fix.
Tests cover the generated output, out-variable scope, named arguments, null and default literals, and runtime parity. LGTM.

Run 42048366644 completed successfully; that wait is cleared. Current head b9c8494 has positive Claude and Codex verdicts, passing CI, and all four inline threads resolved, including CodeRabbit’s withdrawal of the parameter-name finding.
Disposition of Claude’s current nonblocking suggestions after checking the source:
Keep the two identifier-cache initializers for this focused fix. They share the same cached HashSet; extracting name generation is optional refactoring with no correctness effect.
Keep the argument-order check for the existing two-parameter signatures. Valid reversed calls put actual: first; a second named expected parameter with a positional first actual argument cannot bind to those signatures. Hypothetical future overloads do not require a change here.
Keep casts for both arguments. Concrete sets with explicit interface implementations have a natural type, yet still require conversion to ISet; limiting casts to expressions without a natural type would reintroduce the fixed compilation bug.
The earlier docstring-coverage suggestion remains dispositioned as described above. No blocking findings remain; proceeding through the merge gate.
