Treat null method data sources as empty in both execution modes - #7652
A null method data source now follows the empty-source rule in both reflection and source-generated modes: run once with no arguments, or skip when SkipIfEmpty is set. Apply the same rule to null scalar values, null collections, null tasks/async enumerables, and null results from Task<T>/ValueTask<T>, including instance and runtime-value factories.
Keep null elements inside collections as real rows, resultless tasks as null-valued rows, and generic class-row filtering intact. Add engine fixtures covering static methods, an instance property, instance methods, and fields, plus direct factory unit coverage.
Null results from method-based data sources now produce no rows, including scalar, collection, task, value-task, and async-enumerable sources, for both static and instance methods.
Empty sources run tests without arguments by default and are skipped when SkipIfEmpty is enabled. Tests requiring arguments still fail argument binding.
Explicit null elements in a non-null data source remain available as rows.
Documentation
Clarified how null and empty method data sources affect test execution.
Null data-source results now produce no rows in factory and reflection paths. Reflection-based method sources apply the empty-source fallback unless skipping or class-row filtering is enabled. Tests cover static and instance sources, skip behavior, and null elements.
Factory helpers now yield no rows when a source value or task result is null. Tests verify empty results, including instance-based helpers, and confirm that a null element from a non-null source remains a row.
Reflection-based method sources now apply the empty-source fallback to null results unless SkipIfEmpty or FilterClassRows is enabled. Tests cover static and instance sources, return shapes, skip behavior, and engine test outcomes. Documentation describes the empty-source behavior and the treatment of null elements.
thomhurst/TUnit#7453: Both PRs change null handling in DataSourceFactories.cs and MethodDataSourceAttribute.GetDataRowsAsync. They differ on whether a null scalar from FromTask produces a row.

Explanation
Direct issue #7388 requires consistent null-source handling in reflection and source-generated modes, including static and instance value, enumerable, task, ValueTask, IAsyncEnumerable, and runtime-value sources. The reviewed changes remove null-row generation and route null sources and awaited null results through the empty-source rule. The rule runs once without arguments unless SkipIfEmpty is set, which skips the test. The regression fixtures cover the listed source kinds in both modes, and Issue7388Tests checks the 33-test outcome for each TestMode. Unit tests cover factory and resultless-task behavior. Null collection elements remain rows. The latest incremental change only adds documentation for this behavior.

A rabbit checks the source at dawn, No null-filled row hops out upon the lawn. An empty source may run once, or skip, While null inside a row keeps its trip. Tests watch each path from start to end, And document the rules they send.
I read the diff. The change is coherent: reflection (MethodDataSourceAttribute) and source-generated (DataSourceFactories) paths now apply one rule, where a null source is an empty source. Removing IsDeclaredCollection and NullValueRow leaves less special-casing, and the new unit and engine fixtures cover both modes. I did not build or run anything, so I can't confirm the test counts in the description.
Points to check:
Behaviour change for scalar nulls. Before, Task<string?> or object? returning null produced one row [null]. Now it produces an empty source. The test then runs with no arguments, or is skipped under SkipIfEmpty. A user whose test takes string? and relied on a null scalar row will now get a missing-argument failure. Null-valued MethodDataSource/InstanceMethodDataSource member gives different tests in reflection and source-gen modes #7388 asks for this rule, so it is probably intended, but call it out in the release notes.
Reflection uses resultType.FullName != "System.Threading.Tasks.VoidTaskResult". Comparing a type name as a string is brittle. Resultless-Task detection is already in GetTaskResultType, so returning a flag from there, or comparing against a cached Type looked up once, is cleaner and stays trim-safe.
Fixtures are heavily duplicated across the static and instance classes. A shared base or source-generated variants would cut maintenance, but this is minor.
No blocking issues. The first point is the main thing to confirm with the maintainer.
The VoidTaskResult name check matches the existing GetTaskResult implementation in this same file. GetTaskResultType returns the generic type, including VoidTaskResult; it does not currently classify resultless tasks. Retain the consistent existing convention rather than introduce a reflection refactor here.
tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7445/NullCollectionTests.cs already has generic SyncNullCollection, TaskNullCollection, ValueTaskNullCollection, and AsyncNullCollection fixtures with null sources and the default SkipIfEmpty=false. Each asserts the seed is the only row. The PR validation records these fixtures in both execution modes.
Keep the explicit static and instance fixtures: their different attributes and source member kinds make parity coverage easy to inspect. Duplication is a nonblocking style suggestion.
Promoting the reviewed head to ready; CI and the ready-for-review Claude run will provide the next gate.
Ready promotion verified: draft=false, head unchanged at 1ccb5e8. Waiting for the promotion-triggered Claude review run 42041154078 and CI. Auto-merge remains unarmed until that Claude run completes positively and its comment is read, per the loop merge gate. No source changes were needed in this unit.
The change is consistent. The reflection path in MethodDataSourceAttribute and the source-generated factories in DataSourceFactories now both treat a null source or a null awaited result as empty. The empty-source rule then decides what happens: one no-argument run, or a skip when SkipIfEmpty is set. Removing IsDeclaredCollection and NullValueRow simplifies the code, and the resultless-task check (VoidTaskResult) keeps null-valued rows for plain Task.
Test coverage: the fixtures are thorough, including the null-element-stays-a-row case and the direct factory unit tests. CI will have to confirm the engine tests, since they aren't run locally.
Assert the expected result count for the null-source fixture in both execution modes.
The fixture assertions run only after discovery creates an invocation. The global EngineTest=Pass sweep checks only Completed, so a zero-invocation regression can pass without executing those assertions. Add a focused harness check, matching the _7092 coverage, for 33 total results: 17 passed and 16 skipped.

The earlier blocker is cleared: Claude run 42041154078 completed successfully. The subsequent .NET failures on Ubuntu, Windows, and macOS identify the stale Null_Scalar_Remains_A_Row assertion, rather than an infrastructure failure; no rerun was used.
Address CodeRabbit’s coverage suggestion with Issue7388Tests, asserting 33 total / 17 passed / 16 skipped / 0 failed in both inherited TestMode values. This prevents missing discovery invocations from silently passing the fixture sweep.
Validation: targeted collection suite 17 passed; full net10.0 unit suite 929 passed, 3 skipped, 0 failed. The new engine harness is left to CI per AGENTS.md. No production code or public API changed. CodeRabbit’s docstring coverage warning is nonblocking; this patch changes test expectations and uses the existing harness conventions. Claude’s earlier nonblocking observations retain the dispositions recorded above.
GitHub head verified at the pushed commit. The PR remains ready, so automatic reviews apply; auto-merge remains unarmed until the new head’s reviews and CI satisfy the merge gate.
The change is consistent and well covered. Source-generated and reflection paths now follow the same rule, the factory unit tests exercise the null cases directly, and the engine fixtures cover static, instance, runtime-value and SkipIfEmpty variants. Null elements inside a collection stay as rows, which is the right boundary. I did not run the tests.
Points to consider:
Behaviour change for scalar nullable sources. Previously static string? Data() => null (or Task<string?> returning null) gave one row [null] for a test taking string? x. It now yields no rows, so the test runs with zero arguments and fails on the missing parameter. This follows the issue's chosen rule, but it will break existing users who rely on a single nullable value. It deserves a release-notes or migration mention, and ideally a docs note that a nullable scalar source cannot express "one null row". The workaround is to return [null] or a one-element collection.
Fragile type check.resultType.FullName != "System.Threading.Tasks.VoidTaskResult" in MethodDataSourceAttribute.cs compares a string name. VoidTaskResult is internal, so there is no direct typeof, but this is the only place that relies on the string. Add a short comment saying why, and cache the comparison if the path is hot.
Possible duplication. The reflection path and the DataSourceFactories paths now each implement "null means an empty source" by hand. A single shared helper (for example one that normalises a null result to an empty sequence) would make future parity drift less likely.
Extra !FilterClassRows condition. The empty-row fallback is now skipped when FilterClassRows is set. The PR description mentions it, but a one-line comment at that site explaining why a generic class-row source must not fall back to an empty row would help.
None of these block the merge, apart from the release-notes point in item 1.

Included review availability: This review used your included allowance. Your plan provides up to 8 included reviews per hour; 5 remain after this review.
The earlier wait is cleared: run 42041154078 succeeded. The latest pre-push head also has a completed clean Codex verdict, a passing Claude run, no unresolved threads, and passing engine/AOT checks.
Pushed e64a164 addressing Claude’s release-note/migration finding: the method-data-source guide now explicitly documents scalar nulls becoming empty sources, the default no-argument invocation, SkipIfEmpty, and returning a collection containing null to retain one null argument. Validation: git diff --check passed; this prose-only change adds no C# fences and needs no runtime tests. GitHub head matches the pushed commit.
Remaining nonblocking review suggestions retain the earlier dispositions: VoidTaskResult uses the existing reflection convention (including the existing explanatory comment at GetTaskResult), the #7445 fixtures cover class-row filtering, and a shared normalization refactor/fixture deduplication would expand scope without changing this fix. CodeRabbit’s docstring warning is a nonblocking test-documentation suggestion; its functional finding is fixed and resolved, including the reviewer’s confirming reply.
The Apple smoke failure is deterministic simulator setup, not a demonstrated transient failure: no rerun spent. Fresh origin/main b9d47de has the same pinned simulator lookup, so a rebase cannot repair it. Filed #7656 with the failed step, reproduction, runner environment, and the subsequent empty-device execution defect. That CI issue needs a code fix; neither supersession nor issue closure applies. Auto-merge remains unarmed because CI is failing and the documentation push needs fresh reviews. This unit pushed review fixes rather than deferring the unchanged wait.
I read the diff but did not build it or run any tests.
Overall: The change is consistent. The reflection path in MethodDataSourceAttribute and the source-generated factories in DataSourceFactories now apply the same rule: a null source is an empty source. Removing IsDeclaredCollection<T> and NullValueRow leaves one rule where there were two. The tests cover static and instance members, the SkipIfEmpty variants, null elements staying as rows, and direct factory calls.
Points to consider:
Breaking change.Task<int?> or Task<string?> returning null, and a nullable scalar returning null, used to supply one null argument. They now run with no arguments. A test with a required parameter will fail argument binding. The migration note in the docs covers this. It should also go in the release notes, and it would help if the failure message for missing arguments said the source returned null.
Fragile string comparison. The reflection path checks resultType.FullName != "System.Threading.Tasks.VoidTaskResult". Comparing a type's name as a string is fragile. A cached Type constant resolved once would be more robust and cheaper.
Asymmetric guard.!FilterClassRows is added to the empty-row fallback. That is sensible for generic class-row filtering, but it applies to the null case as well as the empty case. I would add a short fixture for a generic class with a null source to pin that behaviour in both modes.
Engine test count.Issue7388Tests hard-codes 33, 17 and 16 for the counters. These are brittle when a case is added. This is acceptable for a fixture, but derive the counts or add a comment on how they are built.
I found no correctness blockers. Thanks for the thorough validation across source-generated, reflection and AOT modes.

The earlier wait on run 42041154078 is cleared (success). Rechecked all review surfaces on e64a164: Claude passed with no correctness blockers and Codex reports completed/no findings for this exact head. CodeRabbit's new async-enumerable wording suggestion was dispositioned with documentation and fixture evidence; the reviewer agreed and withdrew it. Both threads are resolved.
Latest Claude suggestions: the migration note and PR summary already record the scalar-null change for release preparation; improving argument-binding diagnostics is optional additional scope. The existing VoidTaskResult convention and #7445 fixture evidence retain their previous dispositions. Keep explicit engine counts: they intentionally detect missing discovery invocations, which deriving counts from discovered tests would weaken; update expected totals when adding cases. No code change or new validation run was required.
Enable-AutoMerge.ps1 passed and armed squash auto-merge on the unchanged head. No failed current checks; .NET run 42053320534, AOT run 42053320512 and remaining checks are still running. No rerun used. The old Apple failure is not a failure on this head, so no action on linked #7656 is needed to advance this PR now. No prerequisite, supersession, stale issue, or parent-completion route applies: #7388 is delivered by this PR and its body retains Closes #7388. Only current CI remains; this is a workflow wait, not a deferral.
