Adds untyped generic-class source scenarios for a leading null followed by an int, all-null rows with both AllRows and NoClassRow fallback, and a null leading value on a two-parameter class. Extends Issue7210Tests to check counts, outcomes, and the unmatched-instantiation diagnostic in reflection and source-generated AOT CI modes.

The leading-null case uses a typed constructor row to seed the AOT instantiation and disable AllRows fallback. It requires two passing tests, so dropping the inferred source row fails the regression check. Diagnostic assertions require Output and ErrorInfo, and the reviewed generator snapshot includes all four new fixtures.

Closes #7360

Validation: net10.0 test-project build passed. The revised leading-null filter passes separately in source-generated and reflection modes (two tests each). The affected Tests7210 generator snapshot test passes after reviewing and accepting the added metadata. Earlier validation ran each remaining new class filter separately in both modes with matching results. Engine tests were not run locally per repository instructions; CI covers engine assertions and AOT. No engine implementation or public API changes. Existing build warnings are tracked in #7410 and #7412.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved generic type inference for test data rows containing leading or all-null values.
    • Tests now correctly use available row data to infer types, apply fallback inference when possible, and report a clear failure when no class-level data rows can infer a required type.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Cover null rows in generic class type inference" matches the main change. The PR adds test fixtures and engine tests for null-leading rows, all-null rows, and a two-parameter class with a null leading value. The raw summary and objectives confirm that these changes cover generic class type inference from class-level data rows. The title is short, specific, and free of noise, so a teammate scanning history can understand the primary change.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Directly linked issue #7360 has three coding requirements. All three are covered by test code added at head 8ac9937.

  1. Leading null, infers from first non-null value [#7360]: NullLeadingRowInfersFirstNonNull<T>(T? value, T number) in tests/TUnit.TestProject/Bugs/_7210/MixedClassSourceRowTests.cs uses the untyped NullLeadingRowAttribute row [null, 5] and the typed row [null, 7]. Rows_Run_On_The_Instantiation_They_Infer in tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/Issue7210Tests.cs expects 2 tests. The issue signature is Class<T>(T? a, int b). The PR uses T number for the second parameter. Under the stated rule (skip leading nulls, use the first non-null run-time type), int b would not map the value to T, so the PR form is a reasonable reading of the requirement. This deviation does not leave the requirement unmet.

  2. All-null row, AllRows and NoClassRow fallback [#7360]: AllNullRowsUseAllRowsFallback<T> covers the AllRows case (expects 1 test, typeof(T) is string). AllNullRowsUseNoClassRowFallback<T> covers the NoClassRow case. The new test All_Null_Rows_Do_Not_Infer_An_Unmatched_Instantiation expects Total 2, Passed 1, Failed 1, and an error containing "none of the class-level data rows infer".

  3. Two-parameter class with null leading value [#7360]: NullLeadingTwoParameterRowUsesFallback<TFirst, TSecond> uses [null, 5] and expects 1 test on <string, int> through AllRows fallback (asserts second equals 5).

The test classes run in both modes through Issue7210Tests(TestMode) and InvokableTestBase, which meets the identical-discovery requirement. Pass or fail results depend on CI. The local run results in the PR description are not independently verified here.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changes support the #7360 test scenarios. Issue7210Tests.cs adds engine assertions. MixedClassSourceRowTests.cs adds the fixtures they run. The Tests7210 generator snapshot records the metadata for the new fixtures (+393 lines, test entries and registration fields). The PR adds no engine implementation or public API changes. The build-warning references (#7410, #7412) describe existing tracked issues and do not add code. The changed-file list was taken from the supplied summaries and the two inspected files, not from a full file list diff. No unrelated change was found.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 2 files. Review

Test-only PR. It adds null-row scenarios for generic class inference (#7210/#7360) and matching engine assertions. The diff is small, the comments explain each scenario's intent, and the PR description says both source-generated and reflection modes gave identical counts locally.

Minor points, none blocking:

  • NullLeadingRowInfersFirstNonNull<T>(T? value, int number): the 5 binds to the non-generic int number, so it can't infer T. T comes from the method's [Arguments(1)]. The scenario is still useful, since it checks that a leading null doesn't break the row. But the name and the "InfersFirstNonNull" wording suggest the null row drives inference, which could mislead a later reader. Consider renaming it (for example NullLeadingRowDoesNotBlockMethodInference) or changing the constructor so a later non-null value really is the generic one.
  • AllNullRowsUseNoClassRowFallback is checked only by the count, the outcome and the "none of the class-level data rows infer" message. Asserting that the failing test is the int instantiation would pin the diagnostic to the right case. This is optional.
  • The three new passing classes sit in the parametrized Rows_Run_On_The_Instantiation_They_Infer. That fits the existing pattern.

Looks good overall, and CI will confirm the engine tests and AOT modes.

[Low impact] The PR appears safe to merge; both previous findings are addressed and no new actionable issues were found.

Summary

Adds tests for null values when choosing generic class types.

  • Generic class tests now cover null rows that still infer their types.
  • All-null class rows now have a test for unmatched generic types.

Addressed review feedback in 8ac9937. The leading-null fixture now actually infers T from the later constructor value and cannot pass through AllRows fallback; this also addresses Claude’s naming concern. The snapshot is updated and missing diagnostic objects now fail the engine assertion.

The optional suggestion to identify the failing int instantiation is left unchanged: the fixture has only the string and int instantiations, the string constructor values are explicitly asserted, and the test requires exactly one pass and one unmatched-row failure. The new snapshot also pins the NoClassRow partition to int.

Validation: targeted Tests7210 snapshot test passes on net10.0; the revised leading-null fixture passes with two tests separately in source-generated and reflection modes. Engine tests were not run locally per repository instructions; CI covers engine assertions and AOT. Existing build warnings are tracked by #7410 and #7412.

Review

Test-only PR. It adds four fixtures to MixedClassSourceRowTests.cs, matching cases in Issue7210Tests, and the regenerated Tests7210 snapshot. I found no blocking issues.

What looks good

  • The fixtures cover the gaps the PR describes: a leading null followed by a value, all-null rows with the AllRows fallback, all-null rows with the NoClassRow fallback, and a two-parameter class.
  • NullLeadingRowInfersFirstNonNull pairs the typed [Arguments(null, 7)] row with the untyped source row. Dropping the inferred [null, 5] row would leave one passing test instead of two, so the count of 2 catches that regression. IsIn(5, 7) is also deliberate.
  • The unmatched-instantiation test asserts Output and ErrorInfo as non-null before reading Message, so it fails clearly instead of throwing a null reference.
  • The new tests run through InvokableTestBase, so they cover both reflection and source-generated modes.
  • The snapshot was reviewed and committed as .verified.txt. The generated GenericClassRowFallback.None / AllRows partitions and the ParameterMetadata nullability flags are consistent with the fixture semantics.

Minor suggestions (non-blocking)

  • NullLeadingTwoParameterRowUsesFallback and AllNullRowsUseAllRowsFallback assert the type arguments inside the test bodies. A wrong fallback would show up as a failure there, but the engine-side assertion only reports Passed == 1. That's enough, but a short comment tying each expected count to the fallback it exercises would help the next reader. The Arguments list in Rows_Run_On_The_Instantiation_They_Infer is the natural place.
  • AllNullRowsUseNoClassRowFallback relies on the [Arguments(1)] method row failing and the "method" row passing. Its message check, none of the class-level data rows infer, is the right one. If that message is ever reworded, a shared constant would stop the two failure tests drifting apart. Both tests currently hard-code the string.

I didn't run the tests. Per AGENTS.md, engine tests are left to CI. Please confirm the CI AOT and reflection jobs are green before merging.

Current head 8ac9937 has positive Claude and Codex verdicts and all review threads are resolved. Reviewed the latest optional Claude suggestions: the fixture comments already explain the fallback and expected rows, so additional count comments are unnecessary; keeping the diagnostic text explicit in these two regression assertions is reasonable without introducing a shared constant. No blocking changes remain. Promoting to ready; CI and the promotion-triggered Claude review must pass before merge.

Review

This PR only adds tests, and I found nothing blocking. It adds four fixtures to MixedClassSourceRowTests.cs, extends Issue7210Tests, and updates the generator snapshot. I read the fixtures and the test assertions. I did not run the tests.

Good

  • The fixtures cover distinct edge cases: a leading null with a later int, all-null rows with the AllRows fallback, all-null rows with the NoClassRow fallback, and a leading null on a two-type-parameter class.
  • NullLeadingRowInfersFirstNonNull pairs a typed [Arguments(null, 7)] row with the untyped source. The test requires two passing tests, so it fails if the inferred source row is dropped.
  • The NoClassRow test checks the diagnostic through Output and ErrorInfo. It asserts the diagnostic message, not just the failure count.
  • The tests use targeted filters and run in both reflection and source-generated modes, as AGENTS.md asks. The snapshot is a .verified.txt.

Suggestions (non-blocking)

  1. AllNullRowsUseNoClassRowFallback has the same name prefix as the other fixtures. The filter AllNullRowsUseNoClassRowFallback* is specific enough today. Still, Rows_Run_On_The_Instantiation_They_Infer uses a trailing wildcard on class names, so a future fixture whose name starts with an existing one would be matched by both filters. Keeping the names non-prefixing avoids that.
  2. In NullLeadingTwoParameterRowUsesFallback, (int)(object)second! assumes the [null, 5] row reaches the second parameter. That is the intent, and the assertion would catch a regression. A short comment on why the cast is needed (TSecond is unconstrained) would help later readers.
  3. Right now Rows_Run_On_The_Instantiation_They_Infer only checks Total == Passed. Expected counts are the strong signal here, and they are already there, so this is fine.

Approving from a test-quality standpoint.

229-233: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Assert the constructor value that each invocation receives.

NullLeadingRowInfersFirstNonNull<T> accepts number as either 5 or 7. Both invocations receive null for value and the same int type. The test cannot tell which invocation received the untyped [null, 5] row.

Issue7210Tests checks only the total, passed, and failed counts for this filter (2, 2, 0). If the typed seed (null, 7) were bound to the untyped row, both invocations would receive 7. All current checks would still pass in both modes. The regression that the fixture is meant to catch would go undetected.

Keep the count checks. Add a check that observes the number value for each invocation. The check should require one invocation with 5 and one with 7. Once that check is in place, the fixture's permissive IsIn(5, 7) assertion no longer needs to carry that verification.

Run 41953280025 completed successfully for head 8ac9937; its Claude verdict is positive, as is Codex's current-head verdict. All CI jobs are green.

Reviewed the remaining non-blocking suggestions. Keeping the leading-null signature for the shared row-only inference rule, as explained in the inline reply. The proposed distinct 5/7 observation would add coverage for duplicated row binding, but the regression here is loss of null-leading inference: fallback None and the required count of two already detect it. Accepting that bounded coverage rather than adding cross-invocation state to this fixture. Claude's optional naming-prefix and unconstrained-cast comments need no change: the current filters are specific, and the cast directly asserts the expected runtime value. No blocking findings remain.
