Accept convertible typed rows before optional test parameters - #7619
A typed method-source row that converts implicitly to the first test parameter now passes TUnit0001 when the remaining test parameters are optional. For example, IEnumerable<Row> can supply a (int, int) parameter through an implicit operator while a trailing int extra = 5 keeps its default.
The analyzer checks the supplied scalar against the first parameter and omits only an optional tail from conversion validation. Required trailing parameters remain rejected, and typed tuple rows retain the binding rules merged in #7608.
Added analyzer regressions and enumerable, direct, and factory execution fixtures, with an engine regression that exercises generated JIT, reflection, and Native AOT modes in CI.
Rebase validation (2026-11-05): 148 focused analyzer tests passed; all 3 convertible-row cases passed in generated mode and all 3 passed in reflection mode. Native AOT was not repeated for this rebase; prior AOT validation is recorded above, with engine/AOT CI pending.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Single-value data-source rows that convert to a test’s first parameter are accepted when remaining parameters are optional, have defaults, or use params. Their default values are preserved.
Rows with additional required parameters continue to be rejected. Tuple rows retain their existing parameter-matching rules.
Tests
Added coverage for convertible rows with optional or params parameters, required-parameter rejection, tuple-row behavior, and enumerable, direct-value, and factory data sources.
The analyzer now checks a single non-tuple row against the first test parameter when every remaining parameter is optional, has an explicit default, or is params. Analyzer and runtime tests cover accepted conversions and cases that must still produce a mismatch diagnostic.
The analyzer validates qualifying non-tuple rows against the first test parameter. Tests cover optional and params tails, tuple-row mismatch diagnostics, and rejection when a trailing parameter is required.
Runtime tests exercise enumerable, direct-value, and factory data sources. They check the converted tuple and optional defaults, and expect three tests to pass.
thomhurst/TUnit#7587: The issue concerns scalar method-data-source binding in the same analyzer path. This change does not cover omission of a plain trailing array parameter.
thomhurst/TUnit#7465: The issue concerns the same row-to-parameter calculation. This change adds an inline check but does not extract a shared helper.
thomhurst/TUnit#7340: The issue concerns tuple rows with optional trailing parameters. This change excludes tuple rows.

A rabbit checks each row with care, A converted tuple finds its place. Optional defaults stay in view, While required tails still must match through. Three source paths pass the test, Then hops away to nibble greens.
The change is small and targeted. When a non-tuple, single-type row feeds a test method whose remaining parameters are all optional, the analyzer now validates only the first parameter. It still rejects required trailing parameters, and typed tuple rows keep their existing spreading rules. The analyzer tests cover both the accepted case ((int, int) and int) and the rejected required-tail case. The engine regression covers the enumerable, direct and factory sources in both modes.
I only read the diff and haven't run the tests. Two minor points, neither blocking:
The new condition re-queries context.Symbol and recomputes WithoutTestMethodCancellationTokens(). If the surrounding method already has the filtered parameter list, reusing it would avoid the duplicated filtering and keep the logic in one place.
p.IsOptional || p.HasExplicitDefaultValue is redundant in practice, because an explicit default implies the parameter is optional. It's harmless.
Rebased onto #7608, retaining both sets of analyzer regressions and updating the comment to match whole-tuple binding. Validation: 148 analyzer tests, 3 generated-mode cases, and 3 reflection-mode cases passed. Engine tests remain for CI per repository instructions.
Disposition of the prior Claude nits: retaining the local parameter filtering and explicit-default check keeps this scoped fix consistent with the existing optional-binding helper; neither was blocking.
The change is small and targeted. When a non-tuple row supplies a single value and every remaining test parameter is optional (cancellation tokens excluded), the analyzer now validates only the first parameter. Required trailing parameters are still rejected, and the typed-tuple path is untouched.
Tests cover the accepted case, the rejected case, and an engine regression across the generated and reflection modes. I found no blocking issues.
Two non-blocking notes:
p.IsOptional || p.HasExplicitDefaultValue is redundant, since HasExplicitDefaultValue implies IsOptional. Using only IsOptional would be simpler. [Optional] parameters without a default value are also covered by IsOptional, so check that this is intended.
The Take(1) rewrite mutates testParameterTypes before the later checks. A short comment saying that the later checks should only see the bound prefix would help future readers.
Approving in spirit; the engine and AOT CI results are still pending.
Current head 7f288252af8b3bc69a30603efa63fcac8cb4d554 has positive Claude and Codex verdicts and no review threads. Disposition of Claude's non-blocking notes: retain the explicit-default check for consistency with the existing optional-binding helper; the comment immediately above the prefix rewrite already explains that the remaining optional parameters keep their defaults. No code change is needed for either note.
Marking ready to run engine, AOT, and other CI. Auto-merge must wait for the fresh ready-for-review Claude run to pass and its findings to be read.
The change is small and correct for the case it targets. The analyzer now checks a scalar row only against the first test parameter when every remaining parameter is optional.
The new test Convertible_Row_Rejects_Required_Test_Parameters confirms a required trailing parameter still raises TUnit0001.
The runtime fixtures cover the enumerable, direct and factory sources. The engine test runs them in both generated and reflection modes.
Minor, non-blocking points:
The condition uses IsOptional || HasExplicitDefaultValue. HasExplicitDefaultValue already implies IsOptional in Roslyn, so the first check is enough. This is cosmetic.
params parameters count as optional here. Because params int[] rest is not required, a convertible row should be accepted with it. The existing params test near this one seems to cover that, so I did not look further.
Truncating testParameterTypes for the whole remaining check is simple. It does mean later diagnostics on that path, such as the argument text in the message, will show only the first parameter. That is fine for now.
I did not run the tests. No blocking issues found. LGTM.

Run 41950619581 completed successfully; that earlier wait is cleared. Addressed the new CodeRabbit finding in 03838f6 and resolved its thread.
Validation: four new params-tail cases failed before the fix; all 152 focused MethodDataSourceAnalyzerTests passed afterward. This is an analyzer-only change; existing runtime coverage remains in place and engine/AOT validation stays with CI.
Disposition of remaining feedback: retain the explicit-default check for consistency with the surrounding optional-binding helper. The prefix rewrite intentionally limits conversion diagnostics to the supplied parameter. Claude's assumption that the existing tuple test covered convertible params rows was incorrect; the new regressions cover that separate branch. CodeRabbit's generic docstring percentage is not a repository requirement; the binding rule has an inline explanation, so no broad documentation edits are warranted.
The PR remains ready for review. Fresh CI and automatic reviews must complete for the new head before auto-merge can be armed.
The change is small and correct. When the data source yields a single non-tuple value, the analyzer now checks only the first test parameter. It does this only if every later parameter (cancellation tokens excluded) is optional, has a default, or is params. Otherwise it behaves as before. The tail is excluded from conversion validation, and the later type-compatibility check still compares the row against parameter 1. I read the diff and did not run the tests, so I'm relying on your reported results and CI.
What's covered
The analyzer tests include a required-tail rejection case, so the relaxation can't silently widen.
The params and optional combinations are covered.
The engine fixture exercises the enumerable, direct and factory sources.
The Issue7617Tests regression runs in both source-generated and reflection modes.
Minor suggestions (non-blocking)
The .Skip(1).All(...) predicate (IsOptional || HasExplicitDefaultValue || IsParams) is likely duplicated in the tuple-row logic from Support typed tuple rows before optional parameters #7608. Pulling it into one helper, such as AreRemainingParametersOptional(method), would keep the two rules from drifting apart.
Reassigning testParameterTypes with Take(1).ToImmutableArray() allocates in an analyzer path. That is negligible here, but testParameterTypes.RemoveRange(1, n-1) or a slice avoids the extra enumerator.
No test covers a row that is not convertible to the first parameter but has an optional tail. It should still report, and a one-line negative case would lock that in.

Reviewing files that changed from the base of the PR and between 7f28825 and 03838f6.
Included review availability: This review used your included allowance. Your plan provides up to 8 included reviews per hour; 3 remain after this review.
The earlier blocker is cleared: run 41950619581 succeeded. Fixed the new custom-ITuple finding in 4ee4ea5; its review thread is dispositioned. Both new analyzer regressions failed before the fix, and all 154 focused MethodDataSourceAnalyzerTests passed afterward. This changes only analyzer validation; engine and AOT execution remain for CI.
Disposition of Claude's remaining non-blocking suggestions: keep the local optional-tail predicate and prefix rewrite to avoid broadening this focused fix. The allocation is negligible as the review notes. A row without a conversion is still rejected by the unchanged CanBindToTestParameter conversion check after the prefix rewrite; additional negative coverage is optional, not a merge blocker. CodeRabbit's generic docstring percentage is not a repository requirement; the rule has an inline explanation.
The PR remains ready for review. Fresh checks and automatic review verdicts are needed on the new head before auto-merge can be armed.
The change is small and targeted. When a single non-tuple row type converts to the first test parameter, the analyzer now validates only that parameter, provided every remaining parameter is optional, has a default, or is params. It excludes ITuple rows, which are expanded at runtime, and it still rejects required trailing parameters. The analyzer tests cover all three cases: accepting optional tails, rejecting an ITuple row with an omitted tail, and rejecting required tails. The engine regression covers the enumerable, direct and factory sources.
Two minor, non-blocking suggestions:
The AllInterfaces.Any(...) ITuple check and the Skip(1).All(...) scan run inside the per-attribute analysis path. They are cheap, but you could move them into a small helper such as CanOmitTrailingParameters(method). That would document the rule in one place and keep CheckMethodDataSource readable.
The comment says tuple rows have separate binding rules. A short pointer to the code that implements those rules would help the next reader keep the two paths in sync.
I found no correctness problems, and there were no earlier review comments to address. LGTM.
Run 41950619581 completed successfully; the earlier wait is cleared. Current head 0241b06e26f0ebc0201957f666bb7d9f0bba5fcc has positive Claude and Codex verdicts, passing engine/AOT and other CI checks, and no unresolved findings. All review surfaces have been checked, including the later CodeRabbit confirmations.
Disposition of Claude's latest non-blocking suggestions: retain the local binding condition and existing optional-tail predicate for this focused fix. The adjacent comment explains scalar versus runtime tuple binding, and the whole-binding helper and execution regressions cover the distinction; a runtime-code pointer is optional documentation polish. Keep the small analyzer allocations unless profiling justifies changing them, as the review recommends. No further code changes are needed.
