Struct arguments now retain injected properties when generated metadata is used. Generated setters unbox by reference, and init-only accessors receive structs by reference. Older targets cache a reflection setter that writes to the original box.

Adds regressions for ordinary arguments, value and reference tuple elements, generic structs, and init-only properties, plus reviewed property-generator snapshots.

Closes #7609

Validation (SDK 10.0.403):

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed dependency injection for properties on value-type test arguments, including mutable, init-only, and generic properties. Injected dependencies are now available across supported runtime versions.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for property injection into structs used directly and within value tuples, reference tuples, and generic test arguments.

Review fix validation (SDK 10.0.403): internal struct properties are included in the legacy reflection lookup, with assertions in ordinary and tuple regressions. Generator suite: 340 passed, 1 existing skip. All 5 regressions passed in each metadata mode. Actual emitted pre-.NET 8 setter source also passed managed execution and macOS arm64 Native AOT publish/execution in a focused harness.

Walkthrough

Property injection generation now detects value-type property owners and emits setters that mutate the original boxed struct. Tests cover mutable and init-only properties on ordinary, tuple, and generic struct arguments, including runtime-specific generated paths.

Explanation

The title "Fix generated property injection into boxed structs" matches the main change. The raw summary and PR objectives show the generator now mutates the original boxed struct for struct property injection, with regression tests for struct arguments, tuples, generic structs, and init-only properties. The title is specific and does not cover every detail, which is acceptable.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#7609] requires generated property setters to mutate the original boxed struct for ordinary arguments and tuple elements. The supplied whole-PR evidence shows ref-based unboxing with Unsafe.Unbox<T> on supported targets and reflection setters that write to the original box on older targets. It also covers init-only and generic struct properties. Regression tests cover ordinary arguments, value tuples, reference tuples, init-only properties, and generic structs. The reported validation passes in generated and reflection modes, including the focused Native AOT run.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within [#7609]. Generator changes implement boxed-struct mutation and legacy property lookup. Model changes carry the value-type information required by the generator. Snapshot updates verify emitted code. The added regressions verify the issue cases. The supplied evidence identifies no unrelated production changes, public API changes, or unrelated tests.

Review

The fix is correct and well scoped. Struct property injection previously mutated an unboxed copy. It now uses Unsafe.Unbox<T> with ref var typedInstance, so the write lands in the original box.

  • UnsafeAccessor: the ref receiver is needed for struct instance fields, and it is applied in both the generic and non-generic paths.
  • Pre-.NET 8 fallback: the GetProperty(...).SetValue(instance, value) fallback and backingField.SetValue(instance, value) both write through the box. Resolving the PropertyInfo once per metadata collection is good for the hot path.
  • Incremental caching: IsContainingTypeValueType is added to the model's Equals and GetHashCode.
  • Tests: the regressions cover ordinary arguments, value and reference tuples, generic structs and init-only properties. Generator snapshots are included.

Minor, non-blocking points:

  1. The generated code has a redundant nested #if NET8_0_OR_GREATER inside the outer one, visible in the init-only snapshot. It is harmless. If you want tidier output, skip the inner guard when the outer one is already open.
  2. In the prop.IsContainingTypeValueType ? "ref " : "" expressions, the ref is not conditioned on !IsStatic. The accessor declarations are only emitted for instance backing fields, so this is probably fine, but a small RefModifier helper would make the intent explicit and remove the repeated ternaries.

LGTM.

Dispositioned the tuple finding with the existing flatten-and-reconstruct path and a fresh run of all 5 regressions (passed). Claude’s two optional cleanup suggestions are deferred: the nested preprocessor guard is harmless, and the ref receiver is emitted only for instance backing-field accessors. Neither changes behavior or blocks this fix. The current head has positive Claude and Codex verdicts.

Marked ready with head unchanged at 7c0d629. All review findings now have dispositions and the inline thread is resolved. Waiting for the promotion-triggered Claude review run 41925995318 before arming auto-merge; CI has also started. Fresh targeted validation: 5 passed, 0 failed. Evidence: pr-7612/regressions.log.

Review: struct property injection (#7609)

The fix is correct and targeted. I found no blocking issues.

  • Boxed mutation: Unsafe.Unbox<T>(instance) returns a ref into the original box. Both the normal setter and the init-only backing-field path now write to that box instead of a copy.
  • UnsafeAccessor: passing ref for the instance parameter is what UnsafeAccessorKind.Field requires on value types. It is applied consistently in the non-generic accessor, the NET9 generic accessor and the generic-source variants.
  • Older targets: the reflection setters are resolved once per metadata enumeration and call SetValue(instance, …) on the box. The backing-field fallback also switches from typedInstance (a copy) to instance.
  • Source generator model: IsContainingTypeValueType is added to Equals and GetHashCode, so incremental caching stays correct.
  • Tests: they cover ordinary arguments, value and reference tuples, init-only properties and generic structs. The reviewed snapshot is included.

Minor suggestions, not blocking:

  1. In the generated code, GetProperty("X") for the pre-NET8 path is public-only. That matches how property injection is discovered elsewhere, but if non-public injectable properties are ever allowed, add BindingFlags there.
  2. The (prop.IsContainingTypeValueType ? "ref " : "") expression is repeated about eight times. A small local such as var refMod = ... would reduce drift between the two generator methods. GenerateGenericPropertyInjectionSource and GeneratePropertyInjectionSource duplicate a lot of this code.
  3. The nested #if NET8_0_OR_GREATER inside another #if NET8_0_OR_GREATER in the init-only output is redundant. It is harmless, but the snapshot would read more clearly without it.

Looks good to merge once CI is green.

The earlier blocker, Claude review run 41925995318, completed successfully. Addressed the new non-public lookup finding in e7777cc; see its inline reply for validation. The tuple finding remains withdrawn and resolved.

Claude's optional ref-modifier helper and redundant-guard cleanup remain non-blocking: the receiver is only emitted for instance accessors and the nested guard does not affect behavior. Its suggested non-public lookup improvement is now implemented. CodeRabbit's docstring-coverage warning does not identify a missing API contract or a required repository check; adding unrelated documentation to existing generator internals is outside this focused behavior fix.

All local validation passed (340 generator tests, 1 existing skip; 5 generated-mode and 5 reflection-mode regressions; actual generated legacy setter harness in managed and Native AOT execution). Review and CI for the new head must complete before merge. Engine integration tests are left to CI per repository instructions. Existing build/restore warnings remain tracked in #7410 and #7412.

Review

The fix is sound. I found no blocking issues.

  • Root cause: the old code unboxed with (T)instance, which writes to a copy of the struct. Using Unsafe.Unbox<T> and passing the result ref to the UnsafeAccessor getters mutates the original box.
  • Pre-.NET 8: PropertyInfo.SetValue(instance, value) on the boxed object works there. The PropertyInfo is resolved once per metadata collection, not per injection.
  • Coverage: IsContainingTypeValueType is wired into the model's Equals and GetHashCode, so incremental caching stays correct. Tests cover plain structs, value and reference tuples, generic structs and init-only properties. The snapshots are reviewed.

Minor, non-blocking suggestions:

  1. The snapshot for init-only structs has a redundant nested #if NET8_0_OR_GREATER inside another #if NET8_0_OR_GREATER. It is harmless, but the generator could skip the inner guard when the outer one is already emitted. That would make the output easier to read.
  2. The legacy reflection lookup uses GetProperty(name, Public|NonPublic|Instance), which is fine for structs, since they have no inheritance and so no new-hiding ambiguity. A short comment saying so would help the next reader.
  3. The ref "" and instance/typedInstance ternaries are repeated at many call sites. Pulling them into a small helper, or a precomputed refModifier local, would reduce the risk of the sites drifting apart.

Approving in spirit; CI engine tests will confirm the rest.

The earlier waiting run 41925995318 succeeded. The current head e7777cc has positive Claude and Codex verdicts, and both review threads are resolved with reviewer confirmation. Claude's remaining optional generator cleanup suggestions have the same non-blocking disposition as above.

The only failed check is Ubuntu .NET run 41928218765, attempt 1. Its shared Aspire integration fixture times out after 120 seconds before resources start; dependent tests fail during initialization. Windows and macOS pass on the same head, while other Aspire application instances start successfully in the Ubuntu process. Tracked the distinct shared-startup stall in #7616 (the crashed-process probes from #7555 pass). Main has no newer Aspire changes to pick up; this PR is not superseded and #7609 is not implemented on main.

Started the single allowed failed-job rerun for this diagnosed startup flake, run 41928218765. Do not rerun this unchanged head again if it fails; investigate #7616 or rebase onto fresh main as the skill directs. No tests were skipped or assertions relaxed.
