Check tuple conversion analyzer policy against runtime binding - #7559
Tuple-element analyzer rules and runtime binding previously had separate regression lists, so changes could diverge without a shared check. Add one 29-case conversion matrix that drives analyzer expectations, compiled method-source fixtures, and engine result assertions.
The matrix covers numeric and nullable conversions, signed/unsigned native integers, nested reference/value tuples, and exact, explicit, and composed operators. Each case supplies non-null direct and enumerable rows and checks the final typed value or a binding exception. Reflection-only conversions, conservative analyzer policy, and source-only operator limitations in AOT (#7511) have explicit expectations. A distinct source type isolates manual AOT registration from default behavior.
A fixture synchronization test emits an updated .received.txt when the checked-in runtime fixtures differ from the matrix. Engine coverage runs the entire matrix in one child process per mode.
Validation on macOS arm64, SDK 10.0.403:
Analyzer matrix and fixture synchronization: 30 passed.
Targeted runtime matrix: all 58 outcomes match expectations in each of generated JIT, reflection, and Native AOT. Intentional binding failures are checked individually against the matrix, including exception type; successful rows assert the bound type/value.
Engine test project builds. Per repository instructions, its tests were not run locally; CI runs the wrapper in reflection and AOT modes, with an additional generated JIT child run in the reflection pipeline.
The PR adds a shared tuple-conversion matrix and generated runtime fixtures. Analyzer tests check diagnostics for each case. Engine tests check binding outcomes across execution modes, including reflection and generated-JIT runs.

Summary
Conversion matrix and generated fixtures tests/SharedTestHelpers/TupleConversionMatrix.cs, tests/TUnit.TestProject/TupleConversions/ConversionFixtures.cs
The shared matrix defines conversion cases, expected values, and mode-specific binding expectations. It generates direct and enumerable runtime fixtures for those cases.
thomhurst/TUnit#7510: The matrix tests analyzer acceptance for conversions within reference-tuple parameters.
thomhurst/TUnit#7515: The runtime matrix checks generated-JIT binding for nested tuple conversions.
thomhurst/TUnit#7547: The matrix distinguishes explicit AOT converter registration from default conversion behavior.

Explanation
Issue #7530 is the only directly linked active issue. Its coding requirements are met by the reviewed head, as follows.
One shared case set: tests/SharedTestHelpers/TupleConversionMatrix.cs defines 29 TupleConversionCase rows. The analyzer test (TupleConversionMatrixTests.AnalyzerPolicy), the fixture generator (Fixture/RuntimeSource), and the engine test (Binding) all read this one list.
Analyzer acceptance: AnalyzerPolicy checks TUnit0001 acceptance per row. Rejected rows expect WrongArgumentTypeTestData at both data-source locations. Accepted rows expect no diagnostics.
Runtime binding for non-null values: each row emits _Direct and _Enumerable tests. The typed body calls Check, which compares the bound value with the expected value and throws InvalidOperationException on mismatch. Engine Binding requires the expected Passed or Failed count per row. Failed rows must show InvalidCastException or ArgumentException and must not show Wrong bound value. The final bound value is therefore asserted, not only CastHelper.Cast success.
Coverage: numeric and nullable conversions (Widen, NullableWiden, Lift, Decimal, CharacterDecimal, CharacterFloat, NullableCharacterDouble); native integers (NativeSigned, NativeUnsigned, SmallNative, NativeFloating, NativeDecimal, and the nullable forms); nested reference and value tuples (NestedValue, NullableValueIdentity, NullableValueWiden, NestedReferenceIdentity, NestedReferenceWiden); exact operators (ExactOperator, TupleOperator, NullableTupleOperator); explicit and composed operators (ExplicitOperator, ComposedOperator).
AOT registration and deliberate differences: RegisteredOperator uses a distinct RegisteredSource type and an explicit AotConverterRegistry.Register call. Source-only operator rows set BindsAot: false, which matches the #7511 limitation. Rows with Accepted: false or Binds: false state the analyzer or runtime difference explicitly, as the issue allows.
Limits of this review: I did not run the tests. The expected per-row outcomes are checked against the author's reported local results and the code. I did not read the checked-in ConversionFixtures.cs body or the csproj copy rules; the sync test RuntimeFixturesStayInSync covers that drift. The engine tests are not run locally per repository instructions, so CI results remain the runtime evidence.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
All changed files support the matrix or its verification:
tests/SharedTestHelpers/TupleConversionMatrix.cs: the shared case list, declarations, fixture generator, and runtime source assembly.
tests/TUnit.Analyzers.Tests/TupleConversionMatrixTests.cs and TUnit.Analyzers.Tests.csproj: analyzer policy checks, fixture synchronization, and the compile and copy items for the shared helper and fixture text.
tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/TupleConversionMatrixTests.cs, InvokableTestBase.cs, and TUnit.Engine.Tests.csproj: one-child-process binding checks per mode. RunTestsWithSourceGeneration provides the generated JIT run that the issue requires.
tests/TUnit.TestProject/TupleConversions/ConversionFixtures.cs: the checked-in generated runtime fixtures that the matrix produces.
No change targets unrelated runtime product code. The reviewed summary shows no changes under src/. The PR description's NU1902 and warning notes describe build output, not code changes, so they are not out-of-scope changes. I found no unrelated change. This verdict relies on the change summary and the three inspected test files. I did not inspect every changed hunk.

A rabbit checks each tuple row, Through widening, nesting, operators’ flow. Direct and enumerable paths align, Analyzer and runtime compare each sign. The fixtures hop through every case, Then settle softly into place.
A single 29-case matrix now drives analyzer expectations, the compiled fixtures and the engine assertions, so they can't drift apart silently.
RuntimeFixturesStayInSync writes a .received.txt and fails if the checked-in fixture differs from the matrix. That follows the repo's snapshot convention.
The engine test checks that rejected rows fail with InvalidCastException or ArgumentException, and not with the typed body's Wrong bound value error. That keeps it from passing for the wrong reason.
One child process per mode keeps the expensive engine test cheap.
Suggestions (non-blocking)
Positional flags on TupleConversionCase:Accepted, Binds, BindsAot and BindsReflection are mostly set by position, for example false, false, false. That is easy to get wrong when adding a row. Consider an explicit outcome type, such as Analyzer.Rejected plus per-mode Binding.Fails or Binding.Works, or at least named arguments on every non-default row.
Intentional failures in TUnit.TestProject: the new fixtures add about 20 deliberately failing tests under TupleConversions. Please confirm that no CI job runs TUnit.TestProject unfiltered and counts failures. If one does, a dedicated category or exclusion would be safer.
Fixture class names: the fixtures include Decimal and Identity. Decimal shadows System.Decimal inside that namespace. It works today, but a Case suffix would avoid surprises if someone later uses the type there.
Review dispositions for Claude’s non-blocking suggestions:
Keep the compact positional matrix for now: its shared analyzer/runtime checks and fixture synchronization guard the current rows; an outcome-type redesign is unnecessary for this coverage fix.
Confirmed CI runs the engine wrapper, whose broad success test in tests/TUnit.Engine.Tests/ExpectedStateTests.cs uses /**[EngineTest=Pass]. The tuple fixtures do not carry that property. Their intentional failures are selected separately and checked against the matrix, so they do not enter the broad success run.
Keep Decimal and Identity as matrix-aligned fixture identifiers. They compile within the isolated tuple fixture namespace, and renaming the generated fixtures is unnecessary for this fix.
The generated JIT coverage finding is fixed in cb0e2e8. Release engine-project build succeeded; engine execution remains with CI as required by AGENTS.md.
Test-only change. One matrix now drives the analyzer expectations, the compiled runtime fixtures and the engine result assertions, so the two sides can no longer drift apart silently. I found nothing blocking.
Suggestions
Where the .received.txt goes.RuntimeFixturesStayInSync writes it to AppContext.BaseDirectory, which is under bin/. The fixture header and the test failure tell the developer to copy it, but the location is hard to find, and in CI the file is thrown away. Consider writing it next to the source file, as the Verify snapshot tests do. At minimum, put the full path in the failure message.
Checked-in fixture vs. generation.ConversionFixtures.cs is 566 generated lines, kept in sync by hand-copying. An alternative is a source generator or a build-time step, which would remove the manual copy. The current approach is acceptable because the sync test catches any drift.
Failure matching is string-based. Binding failures are detected by looking for InvalidCastException or ArgumentException in the message text, and the "Wrong bound value" sentinel is a string too. This works. Still, a dedicated exception type in the fixture's Check method would be less brittle than string matching, if you ever need to harden it.
Type names that shadow BCL types. Fixture classes named Decimal and Identity live in the TUnit.TestProject.TupleConversions namespace. They don't collide today because the fixtures use the decimal keyword. A prefix such as Case_ would guard against a future clash.
Hard-coded filter and namespace. The engine test uses the string /*/TUnit.TestProject.TupleConversions/*/*, and the fixture header repeats the namespace. Keep these two in sync, for example through a shared constant in the matrix.
The per-mode expectations are documented (BindsAot, BindsReflection, #7511). The 29 cases cover both direct and enumerable rows. Running the whole matrix in one child process per mode is a sensible cost trade-off. The engine tests were not run locally, per repo policy, so I haven't seen them pass. Please confirm that CI is green on them before merge.
Reviewed all review surfaces for cb0e2e8. Claude and Codex both report no blocking findings; the generated-JIT thread is fixed and resolved.
Disposition of Claude's latest non-blocking suggestions:
Keep the existing output-directory snapshot artifact convention for this PR. The test computes a deterministic AppContext.BaseDirectory/ConversionFixtures.received.txt path; changing artifact reporting is optional polish.
Keep checked-in compiled fixtures with the synchronization test. This is the deliberate approach for compiling the same matrix into the runtime test assembly without adding build-generation machinery.
Keep the current exception-message checks: they require a binding exception and explicitly exclude the typed-value assertion sentinel. Structured exception reporting would be a separate enhancement.
Keep the matrix-aligned fixture names and namespace filter. The fixtures use the decimal keyword, and the complete-count assertions guard against a filter selecting no fixtures. No current collision or drift was found.
CI must pass before merge, including the engine wrapper. No engine tests were run locally in this unit, per repository instructions.
Promoting the reviewed head to ready starts CI and a fresh Claude review. Auto-merge must wait until that new Claude run succeeds and its comment has been read.
This is test-only, and the design is sound. One matrix drives the analyzer expectations, the runtime fixtures and the engine assertions. The sync test stops them drifting apart. Nothing here touches product code, so there is no AOT or trimming risk.
I reviewed the diff only. I did not build it or run any tests.
Points worth considering, none blocking:
Intentionally failing tests live in TUnit.TestProject. The rows with Binds=false (about 10 cases, 20 tests) fail by design. They are safe only because every consumer filters by namespace. Any unfiltered or broad run of that project, whether a local run, a CI job or another engine test using a wide filter, will now show new failures. Other intentionally failing tests in that project are conventionally marked for this, so consider the same marking here (for example a shared category or namespace convention that broad filters exclude). A short comment at the top of ConversionFixtures.cs saying "filtered by namespace only" would also help.
The sync workflow is manual.RuntimeFixturesStayInSync writes .received.txt to AppContext.BaseDirectory (the bin folder). The header comment says to "copy the emitted .received.txt", but a contributor has to find it in the output directory. Writing it next to the checked-in fixture, or including the path in the failure message, would make the fix obvious.
The pass/fail check is coarse. The engine test treats a failure as legitimate if its message contains InvalidCastException or ArgumentException, and asserts only that it does not contain Wrong bound value. An unrelated ArgumentException (for example from a bad data source) would pass as an expected binding failure. Consider matching the exception type from the TRX error info, or recording the expected exception type per row in the matrix, since the PR description says the exception type is checked per row.
Binds, BindsAot and BindsReflection are positional booleans. Rows like false, false, false are hard to read and easy to get wrong. A small Expect record or enum per mode (Bind / Fail) would make the matrix easier to review.
Overall this is a useful regression guard, and I'm happy with it once the first point is checked.

Claude dispositions:
Intentional failures are safe under the existing namespace convention. The engine broad success run selects /**[EngineTest=Pass], which these fixtures do not carry. The matrix explicitly selects its namespace and asserts expected failures. AGENTS.md already prohibits unfiltered local TestProject runs. Current CI Engine tests passed on all three platforms.
Retain the existing synchronization workflow for this PR; the deterministic artifact is AppContext.BaseDirectory/ConversionFixtures.received.txt. Improving its failure-path reporting is optional polish, already dispositioned in the earlier review.
Retain the present binding-exception checks: they reject the typed-value assertion sentinel and require a binding exception. Structured error matching is a possible enhancement, not a demonstrated failure of this test-only change. The PR description refers to each row being checked for the allowed binding exception types.
Retain the compact matrix representation; an outcome-type redesign is unnecessary for this regression coverage and was already dispositioned in the earlier review.
CodeRabbit's registered-converter finding is contradicted by the shared engine unwrapping code and targeted generated/reflection runs (2/2 passed in each mode); detailed evidence is in the thread reply. No code changes are needed. Both required reviewers have positive verdicts for this head. Remaining gates are CI; attempting to arm auto-merge without waiting.
Auto-merge is now armed for cb0e2e8 after resolving all review findings. The earlier Claude run 41781718284 succeeded. Remaining wait: .NET CI run 41781717746 (with other platform checks still completing). No code changes were needed; targeted RegisteredOperator tests passed 2/2 in generated JIT and 2/2 in reflection. No local engine test execution. Revisit when CI completes; do not park this PR on hold.
