feat(playwright): honor HEADED and BROWSER environment variables - #7395
Adds run-level switches to TUnit.Playwright, matching the Microsoft Playwright NUnit and MSTest adapters:
HEADED=1 (or true) launches visible browsers when the launch options leave Headless unset. Applied at launch time in BrowserTest.BrowserSetup and BrowserFixture.InitializeAsync, so it covers BrowserTest/ContextTest/PageTest and BrowserFixture/ContextFixture/PageFixture, including GetLaunchOptions() overrides and constructor-passed options. Options are copied before Headless is set, so the shared DefaultBrowserTypeLaunchOptions object is never mutated.
BROWSER=chromium|firefox|webkit becomes the default of PlaywrightTest.BrowserName and BrowserFixture.BrowserName (case-insensitive). An unknown value throws an InvalidOperationException naming the variable rather than silently falling back. Overriding BrowserName still pins the browser.
Variables are read at launch, not cached, so a [Before(TestSession)] hook can still set them (as the template already does with PWDEBUG).
Precedence for headless mode, documented in docs/docs/examples/playwright.md: explicit BrowserTypeLaunchOptions.Headless, then HEADED, then Playwright's default (headless). Playwright's own PWDEBUG=1 always opens a visible browser, even with Headless = true. HEADED has no effect when the remote Playwright service is configured.
Decision: I did not add a --playwright-headed command-line option. The issue lists it as an alternative; environment variables cover the use case, match the Microsoft adapters, and add no public API surface.
PlaywrightTest.BrowserName changes from a get-only auto-property with an initializer to an expression-bodied virtual getter. The signature is unchanged, and the PublicAPI snapshots pass without changes.
Validation
tests/TUnit.UnitTests/*/*/Playwright*/*: 354 passed across all TFMs. This includes the new PlaywrightEnvironmentTests, which drive BrowserFixture.InitializeAsync (substituted IPlaywright) and BrowserTest.ResolveLaunchOptions() with BROWSER/HEADED set after construction.
Mutation check: removing ApplyHeaded from BrowserFixture.InitializeAsync fails BrowserFixtureLaunchReadsBrowserAndHeadedAtLaunch.
tests/TUnit.PublicAPI: 74 passed, no snapshot changes.
Not run locally: launching a real headed browser, which needs a display.
Select Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit with the BROWSER environment variable; Chromium remains the default, and unsupported values produce an error.
Set HEADED=1 or HEADED=true to launch a visible browser when headless mode is not explicitly configured. Explicit headless settings take precedence, and PWDEBUG behavior is documented.
Environment settings apply to browser tests and fixtures when queried; explicit browser overrides can pin a selection.

Walkthrough
The change adds BROWSER browser selection and HEADED launch behavior to TUnit.Playwright. Browser consumers apply these settings during launch. Documentation and tests cover supported values, precedence, and environment-variable timing.
BrowserFixture and BrowserTest use environment settings when launching browsers. Documentation describes browser selection and launch-option precedence. PlaywrightFixture.Playwright now has an internal setter.

Explanation

The new tests cover the implementation and use the internal PlaywrightFixture setter to isolate launch behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #7285 requirements are mostly implemented. HEADED and BROWSER are read at launch time. ApplyHeaded preserves explicit Headless and copies options. BrowserTest and BrowserFixture apply the settings, which covers their derived test and fixture types. Tests cover browser selection, precedence, launch wiring, and option non-mutation. However, #7285 requires documentation that explicit Headless overrides PWDEBUG=1. docs/docs/examples/playwright.md states the opposite: PWDEBUG=1 opens a visible browser even when Headless is true. The current PR description makes the same claim.
Resolution

A rabbit checks the browser name, Then sets the launch options just the same. With HEADED, screens can glow, While explicit settings take control. Chromium, Firefox, WebKit appear, And tests hop onward, clear and near.
BrowserService.Register caches by the "Browser" service name, not by the options reference. Passing a fresh copy of the options from ApplyHeaded therefore doesn't break worker-level browser sharing.
ApplyHeaded copies the options with the BrowserTypeLaunchOptions(options) copy constructor before setting Headless. The shared DefaultBrowserTypeLaunchOptions object is never mutated.
An explicit Headless value wins over HEADED. The precedence is documented and tested.
The environment variables are read at launch rather than cached, so a [Before(TestSession)] hook can still set them. An invalid BROWSER value fails with a clear message that names the variable.
Changing PlaywrightTest.BrowserName to an expression-bodied virtual getter keeps the public signature. The PR description says the PublicAPI snapshots pass unchanged, but I didn't re-run them.
Minor suggestions (non-blocking)
BrowserName re-reads and re-parses the environment variable on every access. BrowserType and InitializeAsync each call it a few times. That is cheap, but you could resolve it once per launch if it ever shows up in profiles.
HEADED accepts only 1 or true. That matches the Microsoft adapters, and the docs say so.
The tests cover the pure helpers well. Nothing covers the integration points (BrowserSetup and BrowserFixture.InitializeAsync), but that would need a real browser, so skipping it is reasonable.
Overall this is a clean, small, well-documented change. LGTM.
Dispositions for the non-blocking notes in the Claude review of 7a2d947:
BrowserName re-parses BROWSER on each access: not changing it. Reading at launch time is deliberate, so a [Before(TestSession)] hook can still set the variable. The handful of reads per browser launch is negligible next to launching the browser.
HEADED accepts only 1/true: intended. It matches the Microsoft NUnit and MSTest adapters, and the docs say so.
No integration test of BrowserSetup/BrowserFixture.InitializeAsync: accepted. Those paths need a real browser, and the pure helpers they call are covered.
Both Claude and Codex approved this head, so I'm marking the PR ready.
Review: HEADED / BROWSER env switches for TUnit.Playwright
Looks good overall. I read the full diff and checked how BrowserService.Register uses the options.
What I checked
BrowserService.Register shares the browser per worker under the key "Browser", not by options reference. Copying the options in ApplyHeaded therefore doesn't break browser sharing.
The shared DefaultBrowserTypeLaunchOptions object is never mutated, because the new BrowserTypeLaunchOptions(options) copy happens before Headless is set.
Precedence is explicit Headless, then HEADED, then Playwright default/PWDEBUG. The code, the XML docs, the docs page and the tests all agree.
Reading the variables at launch rather than caching them keeps [Before(TestSession)] hooks working.
Turning PlaywrightTest.BrowserName into an expression-bodied virtual getter keeps the public signature, and the PR reports that the PublicAPI snapshots are unchanged.
The unit tests cover the pure helpers well (normalization, unset/disabled, explicit-wins, no mutation).
Minor suggestions (non-blocking)
BrowserName is now evaluated on every access, and BrowserType (Playwright[BrowserName]) and BrowserFixture.InitializeAsync read it several times. If the env var changes mid-run, one launch could see inconsistent values, for example in the error message versus the lookup. Reading BrowserName once into a local in InitializeAsync would remove that.
An invalid BROWSER value throws from a property getter, so the failure surfaces wherever the property is first touched. The message names the variable, which helps. Consider also covering this end to end, for example with a test on the BrowserName default, though the helper test is probably enough.
HEADED accepts only 1 and true. That matches the Microsoft adapters and is documented, so I'd leave it.
BrowserService.Register keys the worker service by the fixed name "Browser", not by the options object. The per-call copy in ApplyHeaded therefore doesn't cause extra browser launches.
ApplyHeaded copies the options before setting Headless, so the shared DefaultBrowserTypeLaunchOptions is never mutated. An explicit Headless wins, and the copy only happens when HEADED is set.
Reading the environment variables at launch rather than caching them keeps [Before(TestSession)] hooks working.
BrowserName is now an expression-bodied getter. The signature is unchanged and no public API change is needed.
Throwing InvalidOperationException on an unknown BROWSER value beats silently falling back.
The tests cover precedence, no mutation, and read-at-launch. [NotInParallel] and EnvironmentScope isolate the environment variables properly.
Minor suggestions (non-blocking)
PlaywrightFixture.Playwright is now internal set, which exists only for tests. That's acceptable, but InternalsVisibleTo plus a test-only seam would avoid widening the setter if one already exists.
BrowserName re-parses the environment variable on every access. BrowserType and the InitializeAsync error path call it repeatedly, so the cost is trivial. Capturing it once per launch, as BrowserFixture already does, keeps the name consistent within a single launch if the variable changes mid-run.
129-156: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Heavy lift
Cover BrowserSetup() with a substitute launch path.
The current tests call ResolveLaunchOptions() directly. They do not cover the BrowserSetup() call that passes options to BrowserService.Register, so a wiring regression can remain undetected.
A real browser is not required. The test can use the existing IPlaywright and IBrowserType substitutes. However, it must replace the private static PlaywrightTest.Playwright, initialize the worker before calling BrowserSetup(), and clean up the registered service. This is a moderate test refactor, not a real-browser integration test.

…G docs (#7285)
- Cover BrowserFixture.InitializeAsync and BrowserTest launch options with
environment variables set after construction, plus explicit overrides.
- PWDEBUG=1 forces a visible browser even with Headless=true (Playwright
_validateLaunchOptions); correct the remarks and docs.
- Document that HEADED has no effect on the remote Playwright service, and
use the .NET playwright.ps1 install command.
- Read BrowserName once per BrowserFixture launch.
Rebased onto ca4437c718 and pushed 9c92ee871b60. Both Playwright commits replay unchanged. The previous Ubuntu failure in run 41421678003 is the existing #7282 cancellation race: EveryExit_CancelsAndJoinsPendingWaits(cancellation, True) expected cancellation but received the losing wait cleanup fault. No CI rerun was requested.
Validation after rebase: targeted TUnit.UnitTests Playwright tests on net10.0: 118 passed, zero failures.
Review dispositions: retain the existing internal setter to test fixture launch behavior without a browser; repeated browser-name reads are negligible and preserve launch-time configuration. The suggested full BrowserSetup substitute test is a non-blocking follow-up: the current tests cover resolved options, and code inspection confirms BrowserSetup passes them directly to BrowserService.Register. Private static and worker-state replacement would add global-state test complexity. CodeRabbit's docstring threshold is advisory. Its PWDEBUG precedence warning conflicts with verified Playwright behavior; the corrected documentation deliberately describes that behavior rather than promising an override Playwright does not honor.
Keeping the PR draft for fresh reviews on the rebased head.
Review: HEADED / BROWSER env vars for TUnit.Playwright
This is a clean, well-scoped change. I found no blocking issues.
What I checked
ApplyHeaded copies via new BrowserTypeLaunchOptions(options) before setting Headless. The shared DefaultBrowserTypeLaunchOptions is never mutated, and an explicit Headless wins. That matches the documented precedence.
BrowserService.Register shares the browser per worker under the fixed key "Browser", not by options reference. Creating a fresh options copy on each BrowserSetup therefore does not break browser reuse.
Reading the variables at launch rather than caching them keeps [Before(TestSession)] hooks working.
Turning BrowserName into an expression-bodied virtual getter keeps the signature. The PR reports unchanged PublicAPI snapshots.
An unknown BROWSER value throws a clear InvalidOperationException naming the variable instead of silently falling back.
The tests drive the real launch paths (BrowserFixture.InitializeAsync, ResolveLaunchOptions) with env vars set after construction. They use [NotInParallel] and restore the environment, which is good hygiene.
Minor, non-blocking notes
PlaywrightFixture.Playwright setter went from private to internal only for test injection. That is acceptable. Check that InternalsVisibleTo is already scoped to the test assemblies, and keep the setter internal.
BrowserName now re-reads the environment on every access, and PlaywrightTest.BrowserType calls it on each use. The cost is trivial, but a bad BROWSER value will throw from several places, such as property access and PlaywrightSkipAttribute, if that attribute reads it. The message is clear, so this is fine.
HEADED=true is parsed case-insensitively, but yes or on is silently ignored. This matches the Microsoft adapters and is documented, so no change is needed.
The docs section on precedence and the PWDEBUG and remote-service caveats is thorough. LGTM.

Summary
Adds run-level switches to TUnit.Playwright, matching the Microsoft Playwright NUnit and MSTest adapters:
HEADED=1(ortrue) launches visible browsers when the launch options leaveHeadlessunset. Applied at launch time inBrowserTest.BrowserSetupandBrowserFixture.InitializeAsync, so it coversBrowserTest/ContextTest/PageTestandBrowserFixture/ContextFixture/PageFixture, includingGetLaunchOptions()overrides and constructor-passed options. Options are copied beforeHeadlessis set, so the sharedDefaultBrowserTypeLaunchOptionsobject is never mutated.BROWSER=chromium|firefox|webkitbecomes the default ofPlaywrightTest.BrowserNameandBrowserFixture.BrowserName(case-insensitive). An unknown value throws anInvalidOperationExceptionnaming the variable rather than silently falling back.
