Fixes #7260

Problem

The session keeps every TestContext alive until it ends (TestSessionContext → AssemblyHookContext → ClassHookContext → TestContext). A finished test's context still pointed at its disposed class instance, so everything the test kept in instance fields stayed on the heap. Per-test injected objects were held the same way.

Fix

  • TestContext.ReleaseFinishedTestState(), called at the very end of TestCoordinator.ExecuteTestAsync, after disposal, After hooks, Last-in-scope receivers and result reporting. It:
    • swaps TestDetails.ClassInstance for PlaceholderInstance.Instance (the SkippedTestInstance sentinel is left alone)
    • clears the event-receiver caches, which can hold the instance
    • drops the tracked-object sets, which were already untracked and disposed during cleanup
    • drops the injected-property cache in TestDetails, which only registration and execution read
  • ObjectLifecycleService._initializationTasks is now a ConditionalWeakTable instead of a ConcurrentDictionary. It keeps reference-equality keys, but it no longer roots every object it initialized (including per-test ClassDataSource objects) for the whole session. A heap dump showed it was the other path keeping injected objects alive.

Results

Issue repro (20 × 50 MB instance fields), RETAINED_MB at After(TestSession):

before after
source-gen 1002 2
reflection – 13 (metadata baseline, no payloads)

Behaviour change

After a test finishes, context.Metadata.TestDetails.ClassInstance no longer returns the test object. This applies from After(Class), After(Assembly) and After(TestSession) hooks, from dependent tests, and from anything else that reads it later; it now returns an internal placeholder. Some TUnit.TestProject tests read finished instances through ClassHookContext.Tests and filtered them with .OfType<T>(), so they would have passed without checking anything. These now keep their own static references instead: DisposableTests, DisposalRegressionTests, Bugs/2867, Bugs/3219.

Tests

  • New Bugs/_7260 TestProject tests, with Issue7260Tests in Engine.Tests. They use a WeakReference and [DependsOn] to check that a finished test's instance and its per-test injected object can be collected before the session ends. Both fail on main and pass with the fix, in source-gen and reflection modes.
  • TUnit.UnitTests: 617 passed, 4 skipped. The affected disposal tests (DisposableTests, DisposalRegressionTests, Bugs/2867, Bugs/3219, SharedDisposalTest) pass in both modes. The one exception is the intentionally failing Issue3219ReproTest.Basic.
  • The full TUnit.Engine.Tests run was still going locally when this PR was opened, so CI is the authoritative result for it.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Completed tests now release references to per-test instances and injected objects, allowing them to be collected before the test session ends.
    • Fixed object-lifecycle tracking so it no longer keeps completed test objects alive.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified that completed test instances are no longer available through test metadata; retain a separate reference if you need to inspect one after execution.
  • Tests
    • Added regression coverage for object collection and verified disposal checks across test instances and injected data.

…ion end (#7260)

Finished TestContexts are kept by the session, so their class instance,
tracked objects and injected-property cache kept per-test state alive.
Release them once the test has fully finished, and make the
ObjectLifecycleService initialization cache weak so it no longer roots
every initialized object for the session.

Explanation

Issue #7260 requires release of disposed test instances and a regression test for collection before session end. TestContext.ReleaseFinishedTestState() replaces finished instances with PlaceholderInstance.Instance, clears receiver caches and tracked-object references, and releases injected-property arguments. TestCoordinator.ExecuteTestAsync calls it after cleanup and result reporting. ConditionalWeakTable removes the initialization cache's strong roots. The new _7260 tests use WeakReference and dependent tests for both the test instance and an injected object. The reported memory result is near the issue target.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed production files implement issue #7260. The ObjectLifecycleService cache change removes another session-lifetime root for per-test objects. The new regression tests verify the required collection behavior. Documentation records the intentional post-completion ClassInstance behavior. Updates to disposal tests retain explicit references because finished contexts now contain a placeholder. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Review: release finished-test state (#7260)

The approach is sound and well scoped. Releasing in the finally after reporting, After hooks and Last-in-scope receivers means no later phase of the same test sees the placeholder. Keeping SkippedTestInstance untouched is correct. The new WeakReference + [DependsOn] tests check the actual symptom in both modes, and the PR description documents the behaviour change and updates the tests that depended on it.

I couldn't run the full skill-based review or the tests here, so this is based on reading the diff and the surrounding TestCoordinator code.

Points to consider

  1. Public contract change. TestDetails.ClassInstance returning an internal PlaceholderInstance after a test finishes is observable by users (After(Class)/After(Assembly)/After(TestSession) hooks and the reporting extensions). Silently returning a placeholder object is easy to misuse, for example a cast with as T yields null and is T filters pass vacuously. This is the exact vacuous-pass trap that hit the existing tests. Please add a release note or docs entry. Also consider a debugger/ToString message on the placeholder saying the instance was released.
  2. Retries and other consumers. Please confirm that ExecuteTestAsync only reaches this finally after the final retry attempt. Also confirm that no other consumer of the instance runs afterwards, such as the FsCheck, Playwright and OpenTelemetry/reporting paths that read ClassInstance (TestContextExtensions.cs:29,184,217). CI on Engine.Tests is the real check here, since the description says the full run hadn't finished.
  3. Minor, in ObjectLifecycleService. GetValue(obj, _ => tcs) is fine because the lambda captures tcs, but it allocates a closure on every slow-path call. TryGetValue followed by GetValue/Add would avoid that. ClearCache swaps the field without volatile, so a concurrent initializer could keep using the old table. That only matters if ClearCache can race with execution, so a short comment saying it can't would help.
  4. Assert.That(_instances).IsNotEmpty() in the updated tests is a good guard against the vacuous-pass problem. Consider doing the same wherever other tests still filter ClassHookContext.Tests with .OfType<T>(). A quick grep for that pattern would catch any I haven't seen.

No blocking issues found. The memory fix looks right and the tests demonstrate it. I'd merge once the Engine.Tests CI run is green.

Thanks for the review. Fixes for points 1, 3 and 4 are in 38d2d85.

  1. Public contract change. Added a note to docs/writing-tests/lifecycle.md under "Disposal by Sharing Type". Also gave PlaceholderInstance a ToString() that says the instance hasn't been created yet or was released after the test finished.
  2. Retries and other consumers. I checked both:
    • The release call is in the outermost finally of TestCoordinator.ExecuteTestAsync. The retry path (RetryHelper.ExecuteWithRetry) runs every attempt inside the try block, so the release only happens after the last attempt.
    • The TestContextExtensions reads you listed (BuildEligibleEventObjects, the receiver caches) only run during registration and execution. The release also clears those caches, so a late rebuild would just see the placeholder.
    • Integrations such as Playwright, FsCheck and OTel read ClassInstance while the test is running, which is before the release.
  3. ObjectLifecycleService. The slow path now does TryGetValue/Add under a lock, so there's no closure. ClearCache turned out to have no callers anywhere, so I removed it and the field is readonly again. That removes the race question too.
  4. Other .OfType<T>() filters. I grepped for them. SharedDisposalTest was the remaining one that reads finished instances, and it now keeps its own references. Bugs/3992 reads ClassInstance only from [Before(Class)] and [After(TestDiscovery)], which run before any test executes, so it isn't affected.

Review

Solid, well-scoped fix for #7260. The release point (end of ExecuteTestAsync, after disposal, After hooks, and reporting) is the right place. Swapping in PlaceholderInstance instead of null keeps the non-null contract. Leaving the SkippedTestInstance sentinel alone is sensible. The ConditionalWeakTable change also fixes the second retention path. The WeakReference tests run in both modes, and the existing tests that depended on reading finished instances were migrated.

Observations (none blocking):

  1. Locking on the CWT. lock (_initializationTasks) is correct. The TryGetValue fast path stays lock-free, and the lock only guards add-or-get. GetValue with a static lambda would remove the lock, but then you'd need to pass the TCS through some other way, so the lock is a fine trade-off. Locking on a field that is also the data structure is slightly unusual, so a dedicated lock object would be clearer.
  2. Behaviour change surface. ClassInstance now silently returns a placeholder after a test finishes. Code that casts it with as/OfType gets nulls or empty results rather than a failure. The docs note and ToString text help, but it's a visible breaking change for users who inspect ClassHookContext.Tests in After hooks. Consider calling it out in release notes. Longer term, a separate IsReleased flag or a documented API would be more discoverable than a sentinel.
  3. Removed ClearCache(). In the PR head, ObjectLifecycleService.ClearCache() has no remaining callers under src (the other ClearCache matches are different classes). Removal looks safe, and _spannedObjects is a CWT so it doesn't need clearing. Please confirm CI is green on all target frameworks, since nothing external implements an interface member that was removed.
  4. Retries and DependsOn. The release runs only at the end of the final attempt, which is what you want. Dependent tests that read a parent's ClassInstance now get the placeholder, which the PR description already documents.
  5. Test flakiness risk. The GC-based assertions (GC.Collect then IsAlive == false) can be fragile in Debug builds, where JIT may extend local lifetimes. The reference lives in a static WeakReference and the instances are created in separate test methods, so the risk is low. Keep an eye on CI across configurations.

The Engine.Tests run was still pending when the PR was opened, so CI is the authoritative result there. Otherwise LGTM.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Make ObjectInitializer.InitializationTasks weak-keyed.

ObjectLifecycleService now uses weak keys, but ObjectInitializer.InitializationTasks remains a static ConcurrentDictionary<object, Task>. Test instances and injected objects that implement IAsyncInitializer enter this cache through ObjectInitializer.InitializeAsync. ReleaseFinishedTestState() clears the context references and argument arrays, but it does not remove the dictionary entries. These objects can therefore remain alive until the initializer cache is cleared.

Move this cache to ObjectInitializer's weak-keyed implementation, or clear it at the appropriate session boundary while preserving the existing initialization deduplication and ClearCache() contract. Clearing TestDetails argument arrays alone does not fix this retention path.
