Summary

WebApplicationTest.HttpCapture never contained any exchanges.

  • Disconnected instance: the property returned its own new HttpExchangeCapture(). AddHttpExchangeCapture registers a different singleton, and HttpExchangeCaptureMiddleware records into that one. The property now resolves the capture from the per-test factory's services.
  • Duplicate registration: the docs ("Capture Options") show enabling capture and also calling services.AddHttpExchangeCapture(...) in ConfigureTestServices to set body limits. TUnit then registered a second capture after the user's, which shadowed the configured one and added the capture middleware a second time. GetIsolatedFactory now skips its default registration when a capture is already registered.
  • Fixed the stale Options override in the HttpCapture XML example; it now uses ConfigureTestOptions.

Behaviour change: with capture enabled, reading HttpCapture before the factory is initialized now throws the same InvalidOperationException as Factory. Before, it silently returned an empty store. The existing analyzer already flags access in constructors and SetupAsync.

No runtime test covered HttpCapture before; only the analyzer tests referenced it.

Note: #7047 moves HttpCapture within WebApplicationTest.cs. Whichever PR merges second needs a small rebase.

Test plan

  • New HttpCaptureTests.cs. Before the fix: the requests-are-recorded test failed (Expected to be 1 but found 0), the same-reference test failed, and the custom-registration test failed (Expected to be 4 but found 1048576). All 4 tests pass after the fix on net8.0 and net10.0.
  • Full TUnit.AspNetCore.Tests on net10.0: 112 passed.
  • TUnit.AspNetCore.Analyzers.Tests: 90 passed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • HTTP exchange capture now honors custom registrations, including those configured for the test web host, and avoids recording the same request more than once.
    • When enabled, the test factory exposes its registered capture service. Keyed registrations do not replace the unkeyed capture service.
    • When disabled, HttpCapture remains null.

…tered capture

HttpCapture returned its own `new HttpExchangeCapture()`, unrelated to the
singleton that AddHttpExchangeCapture registers and the capture middleware
records into, so it never contained any exchanges. It now resolves the
capture from the per-test factory's services.

When a test enabled capture and also registered a configured capture in
ConfigureTestServices (the documented way to set body limits), TUnit
registered a second capture that shadowed the user's and added the
middleware twice. The default registration is now skipped when a capture
is already registered.

Also fix the stale `Options` override in the HttpCapture XML example.

📝 Walkthrough

The factory preserves existing unkeyed HTTP capture registrations and registers a startup filter when needed. When capture is enabled, HttpCapture resolves the registered service. Tests cover default and custom registrations, request recording, keyed registrations, and disabled capture.

Review

The fix looks correct and well-scoped.

  • HttpCapture resolution: resolving from Services fixes the disconnected-instance bug. The old lazy field ??= new() was never the instance the middleware wrote to.
  • Duplicate registration guard: this relies on callback ordering, which holds. The user's ConfigureTestServices runs inside the first ConfigureTestServices callback via configureIsolatedServices. The default-registration callback is added after it, so the services.Any(...) check sees the user's registration.
  • Tests: the new tests cover recording, same reference, custom registration (user options win and requests are recorded once) and the disabled case. They failed before the fix and pass after it.
  • Behaviour change: throwing before the factory is initialized, instead of silently returning an empty store, is the right call. It is documented in the XML docs.

Optional suggestions, none blocking:

  1. The ordering dependency is implicit. A short comment at the guard saying user services are registered earlier in the same pipeline would protect against a later reorder. A regression test already guards it.
  2. A user could register HttpExchangeCapture via TryAdd or a factory descriptor. The ServiceType check handles both, so that is fine.

LGTM.

RetriggerConfidence Score: 5/5

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no actionable new issues remain.

Summary

HttpCapture now returns the registered store that records requests.

  • HttpCapture now shows the exchanges recorded by the test server.

Both previous unnumbered findings are fixed: direct singleton registration now installs the middleware, and registration through ConfigureWebHostBuilder no longer adds a second capture filter.

…e capture is registered

A capture registered directly as a singleton no longer suppresses the
capture middleware, and AddHttpExchangeCapture no longer adds a second
startup filter when one exists, so a capture added in ConfigureWebHostBuilder
(after TUnit's default) wins without recording each request twice.

Review

The fix is correct and well scoped.

  • HttpCapture now resolves the singleton from the per-test factory's services. That is the instance the middleware writes to, so it fixes the disconnected-instance bug.
  • GetIsolatedFactory skips the default registration when a capture is already registered, which avoids the shadowing and double-middleware problem.
  • TryAddHttpExchangeCaptureStartupFilter makes the startup filter idempotent. That also covers the case where a capture is added later via ConfigureWebHostBuilder.
  • The tests cover the main registration orders (default, user ConfigureTestServices, direct singleton, ConfigureWebHostBuilder) and the disabled case. They check that requests are recorded once.

Minor, non-blocking notes:

  1. The dedupe only recognises a HttpExchangeCaptureStartupFilter registered by instance (ImplementationInstance). That matches how it is registered today. If registration ever changes to a type or factory, the check will silently stop working. A short comment, or a marker-based check, would guard against that.
  2. HttpCapture now throws before the factory is initialized when capture is enabled. The PR description calls this out, and the analyzer already flags the early-access cases. A release note would be worth adding.

Looks good to merge. I did not run the tests myself.

Review

The fix is correct and well scoped.

  • HttpCapture now resolves the same singleton the middleware records into, so the disconnected-instance bug is gone.
  • GetIsolatedFactory no longer registers a second capture or a second startup filter when the test already registered a capture. The TryAddHttpExchangeCaptureStartupFilter dedupe stops requests being recorded twice.
  • Keyed registrations are handled correctly, and the tests cover the direct, ConfigureTestServices, ConfigureWebHostBuilder, keyed and disabled cases. The XML doc example is also fixed.

Minor, non-blocking points:

  • The dedupe in TryAddHttpExchangeCaptureStartupFilter only recognises ImplementationInstance is HttpExchangeCaptureStartupFilter. That is fine while the filter is only registered this way. If it is ever registered by type or factory, the check would silently stop deduplicating, so a short comment saying so would help.
  • HttpCapture now throws before the factory is initialized when capture is enabled. The PR description and XML docs both call this out, and it matches Factory, so I think it is the right call.
  • feat(aspnetcore): add PerTestWebApplicationTest with per-test CreateFactoryAsync #7047 touches the same region of WebApplicationTest.cs, so whichever merges second needs a small rebase. The description already notes this.

I did not run the tests myself. Approve from my side.

Review

This fixes the root cause. HttpCapture now resolves the same singleton the middleware writes to, and the duplicate registration and duplicate middleware are gone.

What I checked

  • TryAddHttpExchangeCaptureStartupFilter dedupes on ImplementationInstance is HttpExchangeCaptureStartupFilter. That is correct for the only registration path in this codebase, which always uses an instance.
  • GetIsolatedFactory skips the default only when an unkeyed HttpExchangeCapture is already registered. It still makes sure the middleware is installed. Keyed registrations are correctly ignored.
  • The HttpCapture getter now throws before the factory is initialized, instead of silently returning an empty store. This is a deliberate behaviour change, and the PR description documents it.
  • The new tests cover these cases:
    • recording through the factory
    • same reference as the service
    • custom registration and a single recording
    • direct singleton registration
    • registration in ConfigureWebHostBuilder
    • a keyed registration
    • capture disabled

Suggestions (non-blocking)

  • The "last registration wins" rule depends on DI ordering across ConfigureTestServices and ConfigureWebHostBuilder. The tests pin this, which is good. A short comment in the docs that the capture middleware is always installed once would help users who register a capture manually.
  • The ImplementationInstance check would silently stop deduping if the filter were ever registered as a type or through a factory. A sentinel marker, or checking ImplementationType as well, would be more robust.
  • HttpCapture calls GetRequiredService on every access. This is cheap for a singleton, but caching it would make the property cheaper if tests read it in loops.

Overall this looks good to merge.
