  • Rust codebases picking between `tracing` and the `opentelemetry` API on their own end up with broken traces, since the two keep separate ideas of the current span.
  • `tracing` is already unavoidable through the async ecosystem and is far more stable than the `opentelemetry` crates, so keeping OpenTelemetry churn confined to one place limits how often application code has to change.
  • `tracing` still cannot express parts of the OpenTelemetry data model, so the known gaps and how to handle each need to be written down rather than rediscovered.

PR Summary

Low Risk
Documentation-only ADR and reference pages; no runtime or application code changes.

Overview
Adds draft ADR#5736580914, which standardizes Rust observability: application code uses tracing for logs and internal spans, while a single workspace telemetry crate owns OpenTelemetry (OTLP export, edge spans, metrics, and gaps tracing cannot cover).

The ADR defines MUST/SHOULD rules for app code (semantic conventions, no log/println!, no OpenTelemetry deps outside the telemetry crate) and for the telemetry crate (provider setup from OTEL_*, W3C propagation, boundary middleware, bounded shutdown). Enforcement is documented via cargo-deny bans and Clippy disallowed-macros / await-holding-invalid-types.

New reference docs catalog tracing ↔ OpenTelemetry limitations with workarounds and upstream issues, and describe startup/shutdown, HTTP/gRPC/NATS boundaries, tests, and example deny.toml / clippy.toml.

The OpenTelemetry tech radar entry now points Rust teams at this ADR for the tracing + single-crate OpenTelemetry split.

Walkthrough

The pull request adds an ADR that defines how Rust applications use tracing and OpenTelemetry. It also adds reference guidance on API limitations and setup, and updates the OpenTelemetry radar entry to link to the ADR.

This documentation-only ADR can be merged after small fixes. The sample dependency-ban configuration would not enforce the intended OpenTelemetry boundary, baggage is not propagated by the described setup, and a few factual statements need correcting. None of these affect running code.

Explanation

The title names the main change: an ADR that chooses tracing for Rust application telemetry and routes export through OpenTelemetry. The raw summary confirms the ADR (src/adrs/5736580914/README.md) defines this split, so the title is fully related to the changeset. It is a single, specific sentence with no file lists or vague terms.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description gives three concrete reasons for the decision: broken traces when tracing and the OpenTelemetry API are used separately, tracing's ecosystem presence and stability, and the need to document data model gaps. These match the ADR, its limitations.md reference, and the PR objectives. The description is specific and on-topic.

Remove the incorrect 0.33.1 breaking-change claim.

The linked opentelemetry/CHANGELOG.md records 0.33.1 as fixes and documentation changes. It does not list a breaking API change. Correct this statement or cite the exact change because it supports the release-stability decision. (github.com)

- Recorded spans with explicit timestamps, array attributes, structured log

Describe Baggage as context propagation.

Baggage is stored in Context. It is not recorded span data. The telemetry crate must create, attach, extract, and inject baggage at service boundaries. The current setup documents only traceparent, so the stated rule does not preserve baggage across boundaries. (github.com)

Links are added after the span starts, so the sampler never sees them.
`follows_from` becomes a link only while both spans are alive, and has
panicked on multithreaded runtimes. Batch and fan-in consumers, where links
are the model, get sampling decisions that ignore them.

Scope the follows_from panic to older releases.

This document lists tracing-opentelemetry 0.34.0, but release 0.32.1 states that the multithreaded follows_from panic was fixed. As written, readers may treat the resolved bug as a current limitation. Qualify it as affecting versions before 0.32.1. (github.com)

`#[instrument(err)]` records the error as a string, so `exception.type` and
`exception.stacktrace` are missing. Backends that key error views on
`exception.type`, such as Datadog, show broken errors.

- **Handle with:** tracing, by recording `error = &err as &dyn Error` on an
event; or the telemetry crate, with `record_error` on the span's context.

Describe error recording as a partial workaround.

The current record_error implementation adds exception.message and a source chain under exception.stacktrace. It does not add exception.type, and the source chain is not a call-site stacktrace. Recording error = &err as &(dyn Error + 'static) therefore does not fully repair the gap described here. Document explicit type recording and call the chain a source chain. (docs.rs)

`u64`, `i128` and `u128` fields fall back to `Debug` and export as strings,
which breaks numeric queries on them. `tracing` fields cannot carry arrays.

- **Handle with:** tracing, by converting to `i64` before recording. Arrays go
through the telemetry crate with `set_attribute` and `Value::Array`.

Use a checked conversion for large integer fields.

Values outside the i64 range cannot be converted without loss. An unchecked Rust cast changes the value. The bridge does not implement a record_u64 visitor, while OpenTelemetry trace attributes expose only I64 for integer values. Document try_from with a string or omission fallback, or state the supported range. (docs.rs)

Events inside a span become span events with no cap, and the span layer drops
events outside any span. Long-lived spans grow without bound, and
OpenTelemetry is moving from span events to log-based events.

spans off the layer.

Account for OpenTelemetry SDK event limits.

The bridge may not impose an event cap, but the OpenTelemetry SDK limits events per span to 128 by default and supports configuration. Replace “with no cap” and “grow without bound” with the bridge behavior and SDK limit. Mention that events can be dropped when the limit is reached. (docs.rs)

Limit the mixing warning to unsynchronized context.

with_context_activation(true) makes a tracing span's OpenTelemetry context available to other instrumentation. The layer also derives contextual tracing parents from the current OpenTelemetry context. Using both APIs can therefore work when the telemetry crate manages activation and parenting. State that independent context stacks cause broken traces, rather than claiming that mixing APIs itself does. (docs.rs)

Ban the wrapper packages themselves.

This configuration bans only opentelemetry, opentelemetry_sdk, and tracing-opentelemetry. A non-telemetry crate can still add opentelemetry-otlp, opentelemetry-appender-tracing, opentelemetry-http, or opentelemetry-proto directly. wrappers permits a listed crate to depend on a banned crate; it does not ban that wrapper package. Add deny entries for every OpenTelemetry package that the ADR restricts. (embarkstudios.github.io)

Set the Clippy lint levels explicitly.

This file only configures disallowed paths. It does not enable clippy::disallowed_macros or deny clippy::await_holding_invalid_type. disallowed_macros is allow-by-default, so the listed log::*, print, and debug macros remain permitted unless the workspace or CI enables the lint.
