fix(terminal): paint a new WebGL canvas through an open synchronized frame instead of flashing blank - #37604
When you switch back to a worktree whose terminal is running Codex on a remote host, the terminal could flash blank and back for most of a second. Orca built a fresh GPU drawing surface for the terminal, but Codex was sending tiny screen updates about 30 times a second, each marked "don't draw until I'm done". The fresh surface waited for the "done" signal before drawing anything, so it showed blank in the gaps. Now a fresh surface draws what the terminal already holds straight away.

What Changed
Before: with GPU acceleration on, revealing a terminal whose program uses synchronized output (DEC 2026, as Codex does for every spinner tick) could show a blank pane, alternating with content, until a frame happened to close. Turning GPU acceleration off hid the problem.
After: a WebGL canvas that is new, resized (DPR repair), or was emptied while paused paints the current screen once, even inside an open synchronized frame. After that first paint it goes back to honoring DEC 2026 like any other renderer, so later frames still wait for the program to finish.
The "never painted yet" mark is cleared as soon as that forced paint succeeds, so only that one paint can land mid-frame.
Removed the WebGL rebuild that ran after every replay parse (rebuildPaneWebgl in replay-data-drain.ts). Together with the attach repaint, a reveal replaced the renderer twice, and each new canvas started blank while Codex had a frame open.
Why
Root cause: when a WebGL renderer is replaced or revealed while a program holds a DEC 2026 frame open, xterm defers the repaint until the frame closes (ESU). A brand-new canvas has no old frame to keep, so "defer" means "blank". Codex keeps a frame open most of the time (about 30 BSU/ESU spinner frames per second, even when idle), and reveal replaced the renderer twice, so the pane flickered.
Tradeoff: an emptied canvas may show at most one partially updated frame instead of blank frames. That is the only paint allowed through an open frame; an already painted renderer still keeps its coherent frame until ESU (#32198 behavior is unchanged).
This is not a host problem. On the reporter's SSH host we watched the Codex pane's durable history log (which records every PTY resize and all output) across two reproductions. There were no resizes, no clears and no repaints from Codex. The host answered the reveal snapshot with a real image and stayed passive, and downgrading the desktop app alone did not change the symptom.
Linked Issue
No issue: internal report. Supersedes #37440 (same fix, rebased onto main, plus the e2e proof and review follow-ups).
Visual Proof
The new e2e captures the first frame after the renderer swap. On origin/main it is fully blank (diffRatio 0.92 against the pane's content); with this change it matches the pane. The user also confirmed the flicker is gone on an adhoc build of this fix (v1.4.247-adhoc.20261102221225).
Testing
I manually tested these changes locally (verified by the reporter on macOS against a Linux SSH host running Codex 0.160)
Automated tests added/updated, or explained why not below
New headless e2e in tests/e2e/terminal-reveal-paused-render-repro.spec.ts: 12 Codex-like spinner frames at 30 Hz, the last left open, then a WebGL renderer swap. It asserts the swapped canvas shows the pane rather than blank, then that the now-painted canvas keeps its frame while the next sync frame is open and presents it after release. It fails on origin/main (blank first frame) and passes with this change.
Unit tests in pane-webgl-renderer.test.ts: a new canvas paints inside a synchronized frame; an already painted one stays tear-free; a canvas attached while paused paints once on its reveal present, and later presents wait for the frame to close.
Risk
Level: Low
Only renderer paint timing changes, and only for a WebGL canvas that has never painted. The worst case is one torn frame in a TUI right after a renderer swap. No wire, settings or saved-data changes, so mixed client/host versions and mobile are unaffected. Revert is a plain revert.

The change adds emptied-canvas presentation handling to WebGL attach and resize paths, including tracking for canvases emptied while rendering is paused. New tests cover synchronized output, paused rendering, and renderer replacement. Replay completion no longer triggers a pane WebGL rebuild, and PaneManager no longer exposes the rebuild method.

Make the spinner frames change visible cells so the swap check can detect stale content.
The spinner frames change only the window title and the cursor position. No cell text or background changes. The swap assertion compares the replaced canvas with coherent, the frame captured before the spinner frames. Because coherent matches the current visible cells, a canvas that paints stale content passes the same check as a canvas that paints the current screen. The test still catches a blank canvas, which is its stated purpose.
The held check detects a painted canvas that ignores DEC 2026, because PENDING_FRAME changes the full background. The swap path has no equivalent visible change.
Have writeSpinnerFrame also write a changing marker into a fixed visible cell. Then assert that the swapped canvas shows the marker from the last spinner frame, not only the earlier coherent capture.

Keep hidden marked canvases paused during desktop-fit fallback.
When a non-intersecting pane has a nonzero rectangle, hidden-time canvas repair can mark its resized canvas as unpainted. The desktop-fit fallback then force-presents that marker and leaves xterm’s terminal-local pause cleared. Later hidden output can render in the background.
Do not defer every marked present. Keep the forced present for the visible-reveal path, but skip it or preserve the pause when the desktop-fit pane is still non-intersecting.
…nstead of leaving it blank
A replaced WebGL renderer's first paint went through terminal.refresh(), which
xterm buffers while DEC 2026 synchronized output is held. The old canvas is
already gone, so the pane showed an empty canvas until the program closed its
frame. Over a remote link Codex's frames often span packets, so revealing a
remote worktree flashed blank/content for under a second, only with WebGL.
Paint a just-attached or just-resized canvas at once. A canvas created while
its renderer is paused (hidden worktree) is remembered until its first paint,
so the reveal present paints it through the open frame instead of waiting.
Also drop the WebGL rebuild after every reattach replay: it worked around an
atlas problem that no longer exists and replaced the renderer on every reveal.
Rename the test after removing the WebGL rebuild assertion.
The test name says it rebuilds WebGL, but the test now checks only the replay write and terminal refresh. Rename the test so its name matches the behavior it verifies.
